Halcyon = "14 days of calm weather at the winter solstice"

https://www.etymonline.com/word/halcyon

halcyon (adj.)

"calm, quiet, peaceful," 1540s, in halcyon dayes (translating Latin alcyonei dies, Greek alkyonides hemerai), 14 days of calm weather at the winter solstice, when a mythical bird (also identified with the kingfisher) was said to breed in a nest floating on calm seas. The name of this fabulous bird is attested in Middle English as alcioun (late 14c.).

The name is from Latin halcyon, alcyon, from Greek halkyon, variant (perhaps a misspelling) of alkyon "kingfisher," a word of unknown origin. The explanation that this is from hals "sea; salt" (see halo-) + kyon "conceiving," present participle of kyein "to conceive," literally "to swell" (see cumulus) probably is ancient folk-etymology to explain a loan-word from a non-Indo-European language. Identified in mythology with Halcyone, daughter of Aeolus, who when widowed threw herself into the sea and became a kingfisher.

Jupiter and Saturn forming "double planet" coincides with the Winter Solstice

Hi all! I'm hoping some of you who are far more versed in astrology and planetary energies can help me figure out what this means, as in how it will affect our energies and what would be some good spells/rituals to pull out.

As the title says, Jupiter and Saturn will be forming a rare visible "Double Planet" effect as they pass within 0.1 degrees of each other, which is the first time since 1225. (Their orbits align every 20 years but the closeness is what's unique). What's more, it falls smack on the solstice - December 21.

So, any thoughts on this? I don't really know jack about diddles when it comes to astrology, so I'm super curious! Thank you :)

[Offer] Winter Solstice and Yule Cards [US to US]

EDIT: Sorry any newcomers... I have to close this now. Merry Winter to one and all!

Hey everyone! It’s one of your subreddit’s friendly Witches! I’m trying out a Google doc (and I am not a tech savvy Witch, so bear with me!) for the sending of Solstice and Yule cards. If you’d like one, please fill out this form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1GTRhACXfSDs8pH0GyjgBc1SypdmFtETnmqkz8ZTID8E/edit

I do have a few happy things of a non-religious nature for Christmas celebrating folk, so if you’d like that, you are welcome to add yourself to my list as well. Sorry, this offer is only for US folk at this time.

Please know that these won’t get mailed until after Thanksgiving. Cheers!! πŸŽ„β„οΈβ›„οΈβœ¨

Satanic winter solstice traditions?

There was a brief comment in TSB mentioning Satanists celebrate the solstices and equinoxes, so I thought I'd bring this up here. I don't remember reading about any standard Satanic solstice traditions though.

I was thinking of doing something this solstice to commemorate certain things in my life that seem to be getting better, because that seems to mesh well with the "return of the light" symbolism of the winter solstice (for the northern hemisphere).

Do you have any solstice traditions or rituals that you like to do, or know of any (Satanic or otherwise) that you like?

Organising a Winter Solstice celebration for a five year old aspiring witch

Hello. Firstly I'd like to apologise in advance, very sincerely, for anything I post that displays any ignorance. I mean no disrespect to Paganism.

Onwards. My 5.5 year old is taught about Christianity at school. My husband and I are atheists so we like to provide and encourage debate around what she is taught. That has recently included a discussion about how Christmas actually has roots in global celebrations surrounding the winter solstice.

My daughter was appalled by this perceived injustice, as she has heard family stories about witchcraft and magic in previous generations of our women. My maternal grandmother was believed by many in her village to have control over the weather, and there are more stories along a similar vein. We also attended a beautiful Pagan hand-fastening ceremony last year, which she was absolutely fascinated by.

After further discussion and much negotiation we have agreed to hold a small celebration of the winter solstice in our home, in a similar fashion

Reflections on the Practice of Meditation on the Winter Solstice

The experience of being β€œblissed-out” while in the deepest states of meditation is not so unusual. This particular subjective impression can be explained away by scientific jargon, such as β€œhemispheric synchronization,” β€œtheta state,” or even β€œneural entrainment.” Rationalizations are irrelevant. The meditator simply knows that something significant and transformative occurs – It’s very real.

Winter solstice meditations, especially those on a planetary scale, are hyper transformative. They are near-mystical celebrations. It is akin to arriving at a class reunion. Inexplicably, every best friend you’ve ever had – They are there too. They all want to communicate with you, simultaneously. You embrace everybody and later, hold hands. Eyes are closed. In utter amazement, the group feels the essence of classmates who have passed on as well. There you are, together. Then, the big finale. Intense, palpable colors permeate your spirit. Yule or winter solstice card greetings. Need your help

Hi all,

Every year I design my holiday cards (I do professional and custom commissions for all sorts of stuff).

This year, I'm coming a smidge out of the broom closet and doing Yule and/or Winter Solstice cards that include a picture of my family.

I'm looking for help with blessings/greetings to include on the card. I want something that isn't "in your face" to those who aren't "appreciative" of witchcraft, but it's certainly not going to look like your standard Christian holiday card, either.

Any thoughts? I'm happy for imagery suggestions as well.

Thanks!!
