Whiplash (2014) and the meaning of numbers

Don't know what to flair this as.

I'm currently rewatching the movie "Whiplash" and I've noticed a couple of numbers that made me think.

Spoilers!!

When Fletcher first recruits Andrew into the Studio Band, he tells him to come at 6 o'clock. Andrew oversleeps and rushes to the school only to then find out that rehearsal only starts nine. In the bible, 6 stands for the incomplete man. The man who's still tethered to his inner animal, and Andrew feels as if he is incomplete, wich becomes appearant during his convo with a parent.

6 is also a number of hard work as "man should work 6 days a week". In this context, Andrew has to work hard to please Fletcher

Fletcher shows up at exactly 9. I mean, 9'clock to the second. In the bible again, 9 symbolizes god and his purity. And if you've seen Fletcher teach, you know that he thinks of himself as a god.

Back to Andrews recruitment. Fletcher tells him, that the Band room is B16. Here are two meanings packed into one. The letter 'B' is often equal to the number 8. 8 is a biblical number that stands for rebirth. In this context, Andrew is "reborn" into the studio band.

For 16 I found two meanings that can fit for this context. For the german philosopher Jakob BΓΆhme, 16 represented hell and the abyss as an opposite to nirvana. But to stay with biblical meanings, 16 is a number of pure love and devotion to god, wich we see happening in the Studio Band. As much as the students are afraid of him, they idolize Fletcher and treat him like a deity

But to get out of the negatives, we have Nicole, the girl who works at the cinema. Andrew builds up the courage to ask her out after Fletcher recruits him. She asks him to pick her up at 7. Another number, another biblical meaning.

7 stands for perfection. Simple as that. God rested on the seventh day when everything was done. And Nicole gave Andrew the opportunity to rest and achieve personal perfection, but we know what he did with that.

What do you think of that?

Whiplash (2014) and the meaning of numbers part 2

This is a part 2 because I didn't expect there to be much more when making the first one. I'll link it in the comments.

All the meanings are either biblical or spiritual

17, 18 and 4: the first time Andrew plays for the studio band he plays 'Whiplash'. Fletcher gets caught up on his tempo and demands he repeats a short clip of the song over and over again until it's beyond perfect. In perticular, the bars 17, 18 and seventeen on the 'and' of 4. These three numbers all have a special meaning that represent Fletchers plan for Andrew.

17 stands for perfection, wich in this context is quite simple, Fletcher demands perfection. And even more, as he says, "let's pick it up at 17". In the context of this number meaning perfection, Fletcher says "let's pick it up at perfection" meaning that 'perfection' is only his start.

  1. In the bible, 18 is the symbol of slavery and bondage. Fletcher wants Andrew to be his perfect slave. (Just a side note, I think it's funny that in the jewish gematria, 18 means 'alive' but the bible saw that and thought of slaves)

4 has a special connection to the creation of the world in the bible. As the fourth day saw the completion of the material universe. In this scene, the 4 finds itself in Fletchers last wish for a repeat. The last time Andrew got a chance to play before he finds out who the 'real' Fletcher is. Andrew was destroyed and Fletcher can now begin creating the drummer he always wanted.

125: After shitting on Andrews happiness and hope, Fletcher tells his band to continue playing Whiplash. This time from bar 125. 125 is a spiritual number representing a new start. After this crushing incident, Andrew starts anew. Broken, but hell-bent on being better.

  1. Shortly thereafter, Andrew moves his mattres to his practice room, so he can sleep under a picture of his drumming idol, he falls asleep to drumming and practices nonestop. During a small "moving stuff around"- montage, we can see Andrew grabbing his clock. It shows the digital time 4:08. Woah, that sounds like a bible passage, just like in 'Evan Almighty'. And there is one. Psalm 4:08: [I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou,Β Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.] Wich can be interpreted as Andrew finding comfort and rest, only in his music. And it fits this whole 'sleeping under a picture of my idol" thing

1:06. Before Andrews first Jazz Competition, Fletcher has a short meeting with his band, in wich he tells the brass players to not fuck up b

What does Whiplash mean here?

I saw it in the latest the Economist. It is part of the title of a chart in which it says:

>Whiplash
>
>Covid-19, at March 18th 2020

For the chart,

the X-axis is Days since 100th case

the Y-axis is Confirmed cases, selected countries.

I should have posted the image, but it is not allowed.

I have checked many dictionaries end up finding proper definition for the word.

Please help me with this! What does it mean and by which word it can be replaced?

Thanks for your attention and comments.

Literary Chicken: The Player of Games (Review) (Spoilers)

First, an explanation of the title.

There are times when there is a series I'm interested in that has a significant amount of things I don't like as well as things that I do like. In cases like this I tend to stick with the books until the things I don't like overwhelm the things that do.

The best example of this was the Anita Blake series. See, the thing about the Anita Blake series is that after a certain point it more or less turned into a buffet of monster porn, but the first few books were monster porn free. So I kept reading until the monster porn overwhelmed the interesting plot, good setting, etc.

That said, on with the review.

On par, I liked The Player of Games a lot. I think that Banks was really smart in this book to set the expectations of the main character, Gurgeh, where he did. Other than being super amazing at game playing, he struck me as a sort of "Culture Everyman". He didn't seem(outside of his specialty) particularly smart, charismatic, agile, etc. He reminded me a bit of Sherlock Holmes as he was originally written, very good in his area of expertise but either average or below average in the rest right down to the fact that he got "friendzoned" by Yay before he left.

The book was a very quick read, almost as quick as Neuromancer. This was a welcome surprise.

I liked how the Empire of Azad was portrayed, but I think that Banks went a little overboard on their dark side, it made the empire feel a little "Snidely Whiplash", meaning so over the top villainous that it made it a little hard to believe. It reminds me a little bit of the violence in the TV presentation of "American Gods" in that it produces more an eyeroll than a sense of horror.

One thing that was most interesting to me was how Banks made the concept of "The Great Game" quite literal. I would imagine this point would be lost on anyone who isn't a pre WWI European history nerd but it does bear mentioning, at least.

About the ending.

One of the things that is a truism in governments for as far back as I can find is that, past a certain point, covert operations and diplomacy are about shitty people doing shitty things to each other and occasionally being shitty to a guest star that is outside of the system usually for a shitty reason. The innovation of Special Circumstances is that they(at least in the case of this book) were shitty people doing shitty thi

I'm only just starting to realize my mother is a narcissist.

She doesn't have the "textbook" signs of how I pictured narcissists. She isn't outwardly obsessed with herself, she doesn't have a huge ego, nothing like that. It manifests more like a martyr complex. Everything revolves around her in some way, shape, or form. She's suspicious and controlling. If you bring attention to her behaviour, no matter how respectfully and well-meaning, she shuts down and says things like, "Yeah, I know, I'm the worst. Everything is my fault." It's impossible to have a reasonable conversation with her that leads to any change.

She can't say "sorry." Rather than admit she was wrong, she pretends nothing happened. Emotional whiplash means nothing to me anymore after years of going from 100 to zero within a span of hours. She gaslights and reverses situations on the people around her to make them seem like the villain. Talking to someone in private? Must be about her. Don't answer your phone? Must be ignoring her. She'll leave an angry voicemail about it. Call drops? She'll send berating text messages about hanging up on her.

My mom is controlling in small ways. It always starts with little questions--"what did you have for lunch?" And then it inevitably leads to comments about my weight, my appearance, my health, all while painting a picture of concern. I've learned to just lie to get her to leave me alone for my own mental health. She treats me like I'm helpless, doing every little thing for me (without my knowledge or permission), and then one of two things happens: she tells me how lazy I am for not doing anything, or she brags about how good of a mother she is and uses her deeds against me later.

She has babied and controlled me my entire life. She did things for me instead of teaching me how to do them, and framed it as her being a good mother, until she was displeased with me, and then suddenly I was mocked for not knowing anything. She forced me into dependancy and then berated me for it. Today, when I ask her not to do certain things for me because I can do them myself, she gets offended. She says she's only trying to help. I apologize.

When I make decisions she doesn't like, we get into fights. Something as simple as choosing to go drive somewhere in "bad" (read: rainy) weather puts her into a panic. We argue. She tells me I'm stupid, that I'm making her worry. I tell her to stop, I'm fine, it's just rain (or whatever it is). She tells me how terrible I am for making her feel this way, for not making the choice she wante

First Contact - Disaster - 477

[first] [prev] [next]

It is rare for an entire Dinochrome Brigade to be deployed. Over a thousand of us, each of us capable of defending or assaulting an entire continent, it seems almost as if it is a waste of firepower. Standard doctrine is to deploy ten to fifteen to assault a world, five to ten to defend a world.

But the new enemy, they use tactics beyond normal scope of the modern battlefield. Temporal distortions flicker and blossom across the planet, bringing in more foes or perhaps just rewinding our foes to before they had been engaged and destroyed.

The Brigade had been in for refit, Service Life Extension Program mandatory upgrades to software, hardware, and a new armor laminate, meaning the entire Brigade, which was being deployed across the entire Unified Council War Zone, was being serviced by V Corps maintenance and service shops.

But then the humans, almost entirely, died within a single hour.

Which left us without human commanders.

The Dinochrome Division can fight, and prevail, without a human operator, but it degrades our performance by 42.284572%. Some strange quirk of the human mind, of naturally evolving neural tissue, enhances the combat abilities of a Mark XXIX-D9A above and beyond what mere mechanical engineering, computer programming, and weapons development can account for.

However, humans often prepare for a worst case scenario that often appears to only be possible if everything goes right for the enemy, or drastically wrong for humanity.

BOLO know of these preparations and counter-measures. While we often war-game them, it is more to indulge in the exotic than out of any real computation that such a thing would come to pass.

That every BOLO commander of the entire Dinochrome Division would fall down and die within an hour is something covered only in a few scenarios, and one we have never taken seriously.

Our makers, however, foresaw such a thing, and prepared for it.

*Which is why I, and all of my Brigade mates, were now commanded by what appeared to be an adolescent female Terran Descent Human dressed in a school girl uniform. Cloned by the medical systems in the command couch, fed knowledge from my database, and implanted with neural engrams to be able to uti

By songs that you can't take seriously, I mean songs that are too funny for you (or the MVs are too funny) to focus on how good the song, K-pop songs that are memes, or Kpop songs that give you second-hand embarrassment.

For examples:

Because of you - Taeil (NCT); When I first searched up the lyrics to it I was so shocked when I realised that it's a sad love song and not the meme that NCT made it to be.

Whiplash - NCT 127; Once you get past Taeyong saying it's about his sister then you truly realise that it's a good song.

N/S - Stray Kids

Daddy - Psy

Expensive Girl - BTS (RM)

Trouble - BTS (RM)

I Wanna Be A Celeb - Celeb Five

How the ending contradicts multiple interviews of Yams:

> "Someone who does not lie.” From the story's circumstances, to β€œlie” means the character twisted his or her original will/resolve. I find the most appealing are those who operate according to their resolve, as well as those who, as metafiction would say, rise up against the entire world.

Here, Isayama is describing that a well written character in his book is someone who operates according to their original resolve and innate nature, the one that has been established since the start, and stay consistent. In chapter 139, however, Eren has twisted his original resolve of complete freedom and destruction of his enemies, which was originally established for entirety of the timeskip and aligned with Eren's fundamental values/nature, and so Isayama has effectively betrayed his vision of what he called an appealing and well-written character.

>Mikasa’s growth probably involves separation from Eren. By separation, I mean she might be able to return to that ordinary girl that she used to be in childhood…… I read some interesting thoughts from readers on the internet. People would say male mangaka have a tendency to reject the notion of β€œfate.β€œ On the contrary, female mangaka draw works that approve β€œfate.” You meet your Mr./Ms. Right, you say β€œThis is fate!”, and you accept that the trajectory of your life is already predestined. People who interfere with that and seem to affect your serene life are portrayed as villains. Of course, I am not speaking of all mangaka, but with my mentality as a male mangaka, I think it is pitiful if Mikasa’s life is only about staying together with Eren. However to Mikasa, it is a wonderful thing to be with Eren forever. Combining what I’ve said, if I were to draw the separation of Eren and Mikasa, I feel like my portrayal likely won’t be satisfactory for readers, because Mikasa would have to endure the strain of being stuck between Eren and Armin. Even though she can sympathize with Armin, who considers things from a β€œglobalism” perspective, it’s possible that she can’t just let the more self-focused Eren go. [Note: Isayama uses the katakana of β€œGlobalism” in Japanese to describe Armin. He probably means Armin embraces the world and is curious about everything in the universe, while Eren is rather β€œself-focused” compared to him.]

So here, Isayama is directly addressing that Mikasa's character arc revolves around her abiding, strong fear of loss of loved ones that stems from her early trauma, which is

Doom Eternal's difficult playthrough helped me get over writer's block and reminded me what I truly crave for in videogame

Despite being only in mid-20s and have no family to take care of, I empathize a lot with busy people with many things going on in their life which results in limited time for video games. I think I'm an enthusiast. I enjoy a wide variety of video games, but these days I found myself gravitating towards the one that has short playtime and tends to be narrative-focused. I backed Solasta and bought Colony Ship RPG at EA launch because CRPG has always been my biggest love in gaming, but the last RPG that I delved into - Wasteland 3, took me nearly 2 months to complete, and I'm not sure if both of these can hold my enthusiasm even if they turn out to be excellent. I feel like I'm running out of time for my passion for gaming.

Until Doom Eternal.

I loved Doom 2016 and I pre-ordered Eternal last year. But you probably already know how the game turned out to be quite divisive for the general audience and way different from Doom 2016. It was fast and methodical and... really maximalist, which is a complete 180 degree from 2016. The lack of ammunition, the weird "light demons on fire so they drop ammo" thingy was utterly weird and contextually nonsense to me, the in-your-face tutorial pop-ups. It felt off, it wasn't what I expected and I wasn't sure I was ready for those changes. So giving it a refund after 4 hours wasn't an easy decision, because half of me was wanting to like it, but the other half was whispering "if you're not comfortable with how it is, then why continue?" to me. I mean, it makes sense right? When you don't have that much time in your life then it's not worth keep chasing games that don't give you entertainment in the beginning hours.

One year later, I gave it a try, for no reason at all, because IndieGala was having a sale. Eh, it's cheap, why not.

I went in with completely fresh mind, knowing the game is really difficult, set it on Nightmare which is the highest among the four standard difficulties. It was grueling in the first few levels, I was familiar with how the game plays generally and enemies' placement in those levels since I played them before, but they were still hell to get through. The lack of powerful weapons and mods, the lack of runes that give you an easier time to survive, the fact that I'm still not used to pressing G then CTRL to switch between grenades and R to flame belch because I was still occupied with switching weapons. It was exhausting in the first 4 or 5 hours, and not until completing Super Gore Nest, it finall

I recently reviewed La La Land and I'm interested in how Damien Chazelle uses it and Whiplash to analyze what it means to be great.

http://www.popcornflicks.ca/wp/2016/12/26/la-la-land/

To summarize my views on the film:

I think beyond focusing on committed jazz players, what Whiplash and La La Land really have in common is how they portray the pursuit of greatness. From Chazelle's perspective, it's not difficult to achieve success in that most people don't have the capacity for the talent or the work. Those with the force of will are eventually able to push the society around them to bend to their will and accept their work.

It's true with Andrew Neiman, it's true with Mia Dolan and Sebastian Wilder. The hardship they face isn't their lack of ability or skill, it's what they sacrifice in that pursuit. What is common is the toxicity of their pursuit towards those around them. Andrew becomes arrogant and throws away his girlfriend because of his goals. He literally bleeds for his work.

Mia and Sebastian can either both follow their dreams, or one has to give partway so they can be together. What's illuminating is that it is never a discussion that both might compromise on their goals; both are so dedicated on their paths they would never be willing to concede any ground. They do damage to their partners because they romanticize success more than they do their romance.

La La Land perfectly deconstructs the entire concept of "I'll always love you* with it's ending. They will always love each other, and they both know it. They're not Rick and Ilsa; they do have the choice to be together, but they didn't.

I think what Damien Chazelle says about how you get a sort of tunnel vision in your pursuit of greatness, where you forget about the people you care about, is something powerful. How his protagonists push themselves past their limitations to sometimes dangerous degrees is a testament to how toxic their lives can be. It's fascinating.

Critical Race Theory and Conservative Moral Panic in Education

INTRO/ABSTRACT

The pastime of dunking on leftists is something that brings various factions of the political spectrum together. Liberals -- neo, classical, or otherwise -- find great joy in discussing the new, silly fad ideologies imported from the humanities departments of private universities. Governor Ron DeSantis has made waves over the past week by going further than dunking on leftists; he announced that the Florida Department of Education would ban β€œCritical Race Theory” from its curriculum, characterizing the theory as β€œteaching kids to hate their country and to hate each other.”

The rhetoric of the right on Critical Race Theory is admittedly appealing. In a universe where subversive liberal arts majors are entering into the workforce as teachers in public schools and are indoctrinating children into neo-Marxist ideologies, fighting subversion using whatever policy levers are available seems justified. And, admittedly, β€œcritical theory” can be applied in a less-than-rigorous manner by academics attempting to push their pet narratives of the root of the ills of modern society. To some extent, their rhetoric has affected popular conception of race and its relation to political and economic institutions. The re-evaluation of systemic racism that exploded into our collective consciousness after the murder of George Floyd is embedded in ideas of critical theory.

But if the concept of lefty teachers radicalising middle schoolers to hate white people seems absurd and McCarthyesque, that’s probably because it is. DeSantis can get away with this type of incendiary rhetoric and make it seem like our public schools are a battleground between America-loving conservatives and neo-Marxist liberals because no one actually knows what Critical Race Theory is, and his statement can be contextualized in a long history of conservative moral panic surrounding education.

So, in this effortpost, I will

  1. discuss the role of education policy in the history of moral panic and culture war
  2. explain what critical theory, in general, is
  3. explain how CRT manifests itself in school curriculums
  4. rationalize the conservative backlash to CRT and other similar ideological frameworks
  5. ponder liberal policy solutions to educational warfare

Thank you everyone for the good discussion last week and over the weekend. As I'm running short on time, rather than a recap I'd direct people to the weekend post and the Friday daily post, where good discussions including recaps occurred.

My last remaining AMC position is gone because it was a set of options that expired at the end of last week. Songs that share the same title but gives me emotional whiplash

A more appropriate title would defo be

"Songs that share the same title but gives me the biggest emotional whiplash (no nct not THAT whiplash"

but we ain't going isekai visual novel title here - also this feels both like shitpost and discussion but anyways.

So I was chilling and listening to music as always and I was just listening to my japanese music cos I'm a sucker for those and I found songs that share the same title as kpop songs and I couldn't stop laughing at how different the songs are in terms of theme and meaning. Here are just some that I found haha!

  1. Cherry Bomb

Ah cherry bomb... Beautiful song. There's a jp song called Cherry Bomb done by a band called Silent Siren.. 10/10 recommend it is cute wholesome.. But then comparing it to NCT's Cherry Bomb made me burst out laugh cos.. one is abt a cute innocent song abt overwhelming (exploding) love for someone... and the other is just.... them being the biggest hit on the stage.. I'll let you choose which is which

  1. Nectar

Again another NCT (WayV) song.. you can clearly tell that I'm a NCT lover by this point haha sorry.. So there's a song called Nectar done by ma bois Mafumafu ft. Nqrse- pls give utaites a chance haha anyways.. After listening to both again... mega shookt... wayv's one is abt them wanting nectar and dancing in the moonlight while the other is abt... ehmm.. okay how do i put this..

Basically take WayV's Nectar... combine it with Love Talk but make it Domino. That's how I describe it.. If I'm not wrong.. it's abt the depressing aftermath of a one night stand

Bonus: Gimme Gimme

So this one doesn't give me that big of an emotional whiplash - in fact I find both the NCT and the Vocaloid (Hachiouji and Giga collab - but yes pls give vocaloid a listen as well haha sorry) ver.. to be almost identical in terms of meaning..

Yet there's some difference I guess in vibe wise?

Like the hachiouji x giga one gave me like club vibes? Like from a 10 pm - 12 am vibe.. Whereas the nct one gave me 12 am - 2 am vibes.. not sure why I went there.. but I did..

On an unrelated note - lemme just like be amused cos everytime i listen to nct's gimme gimme i get the biggest otome game vibes like y'all.. I got reminded of freaking Diabolik Lovers for goodness sake.. and almost.. Dramatical Murder.. but you did not here that from me..

Anyways - I wonder if you guys have similar experiences xD

Don't forget to Prep for Coronal Mass Ejection

Every year there's about a 1.2% chance of a particularly large Coronal mass ejection (solar flare, extreme geomagnetic storm, etc) occuring. The last couple massive ones set telegraph offices on fire, and more recently a smaller (of the massive ones) one knocked out power across the entire province of Quebec.

Basically the sun is farting on us all the time. https://scx2.b-cdn.net/gfx/news/hires/2012/atasteofsola.gif this is how close we came to getting slammed by a carrington-event level CME back in July 2012.

If this had actually hit the planet, you'd be seeing a nuclear-blast-in-the-atmosphere-type EMP that could range from a country-sized blackout to giving half the planet electronic whiplash that would very quickly lead to basically no electricity in vehicles and lots of fried electronics, many electrical fires could occur in vulnerable areas, and it would be a massive event that an entire continent could have to deal with. You'd be looking at months and months before aid from other countries finally came in, and local EMP-protected tech was available to fix everything and get the whole system back up and running.

Throw this on top of a COVID-19 pandemic and you're looking at a huge mess. Remember - vaccines have to be refrigerated.

Just sharing this information so you guys are aware - it doesn't take the unlikely occurrence of an actual nuclear bomb going off in the atmosphere, the sun just literally just has to fart (it does this several times a year, sometimes really big ones, just not too many pointed at earth) in our general direction unexpectedly (though it has to be in the wake of a sunspot - these sunspots can fling shit in all directions).

That being said, it's almost guaranteed that this is going to happen in the next fifty years, somewhere (could be down in south america, australia, asia, europe, or it could just smack the pacific ocean and not really do anything but cause a big radio blackout).

The next (very small) solar flare is predicted to happen around May 1st: https://iswa.gsfc.nasa.gov/IswaSystemWebApp/iSWACygnetStreamer?timestamp=2038-01-23+00%3A44%3A00&window=-1&cygnetId=261

some examples over the last few years of slightly larger ones, and a few major events (there are others, but this was just a quick google search):

Summary thread for reviews? (Review Megathread + Discussion)

For the sake of convenience, perhaps we could use this post as a megathread for summary of reviews and consensus as they come in throughout the day?

I'm going to list reviews from publishers/reputable critics here. For reviews from a more casual audience/informal viewer, please see my post in the comments down below (and upvote for visibility!)

Current Rating: 93% Rotten Tomatoes from 29 Reviews

Empire (3/5), lots of comparisons to previous material

>Some elements are overly familiar and others overly confusing, but Shadow And Bone will draw you into the Fold with its absorbing world-building and engaging lead duo.

Den of Geek: Netflix adaptation brings the magic, positive (book fan)

>It’s true, Shadow and Bone is not a perfect adaptation of Bardugo’s novels. Several important secondary characters barely seem to merit a mention onscreen here, and the rushed sequences at the Little Palace generally leave most of the secondary Grisha and their abilities feeling sadly interchangeable. And the series doesn’t always do the greatest job explaining the basics of Grisha life for casual viewers. Yet, as a whole, the series feels often feels downright magical, a thrilling adventure that always remains firmly anchored in the story of the complex heroine at its center.

Digital Spy, 4/5, Netflix's best fantasy show since The Witcher

>Although an official renewal hasn't been announced just yet, Shadow and Bone is clearly in it for the long haul. Without spoiling anything, it's safe to say that Netflix will be throwing plenty more coins at this show for a while to come, and that's something to be celebrated, not least because of how wonderfully diverse this story is too.

Screenrant: Netflix's Fantasy Show Is A Thrilling Journey, positive

>All told, Shadow and Bone is a thrillingly exciting fantasy drama, with some moments of levity weaved in to create an all around entertaining season of television. Th

Spanish movie title translations: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love always having to check a title twice

I was surprised how well received was the post: "In the Spanish dub of Terminator he doesn't say "Hasta la vista, baby" but "sayonara baby", so here is my post about the madness and ridiculousness of the Spanish translations of movie titles and dubbing.

Being raised in Spain means that the first time I heard someone talking about DIE HARD, I thought....WHAT IS THIS MOVIE? Moments later a quick google search revealed that in fact they were talking about LA JUNGLA DE CRISTAL (the Glass Jungle‘‘). OH yeah, Bruce Willis indeed!

And this madness happens every single day.

Spain and latam

Despite Spain and Latin America share the same language, they have different dubs and they may have different translation for movie titles!

This post will be around Spain's translation. So, my LATAM friends, lo siento.

If you ever go to youtube's comments section in any The Simpsons clip they will be an absolute war going on between defenders of Latam dub and Spain's dub. It's a good way of learning Spanish swearing styles and insults.

Just leave the title as it is

Lots of movie titles are not translated, usually because they are names:

Iron man, Wonder Woman, Forrest Gump, Gladiator, Casablanca...

Sometimes they cannot find the words for it and just leave it in English:

Pulp fiction, Reservoir dogs, Whiplash, Toy Story....

Sometimes they create absolute confusion or laughs:

They didn't change Thor 2, but in Spanish it is pronounced "Tor Dos", whit means TURDS.

A great case was the movie 'Once', they didn't change the English title and left it as "ONCE" but "Once" in Spanish means ELEVEN. So, the movie poster said: How often do you find the right person?

Spanish answer: 'ONCE' = Eleven!

The translator is just a prick

There are cases that just create confusion....

'The good, the bad and the ugly' changes to 'The good, the ugly and the bad'. (el bueno, el feo y el malo).

'A fistfull a dollars', changed to 'FOR a fistful of dollars' and therefore, For a Few Dollars More was changed to 'The death had a price', which is ludicrous.

'Superbad' to 'Superhorny' and therefore "pineapple express" to " Superstoned" (superfumados).

They also thought BettleJuice was too complicated for a Spanish pronunciation so they went for the PHONETICAL TRANSCRIPTION and it was changed to "BitelchΓΊs", although it sounds like Bee-Tell-Choose.

"The breakfast club" = "the club of the five" w

When your mom is the mean girl in your life

I feel like I’m going crazy about this and I would really appreciate any words of advice or encouragement. My mom (45) has always been such a mean girl to me (24.) it doesn’t matter what I do she always has a comment. And it’s like whiplash because she’ll be like I’m so proud of you but then will turn around and put me down. During high school it was really bad. My dad isn’t in the picture and whenever I would misbehave it was always stuff like β€œyou know if I didn’t care about you, you would be all alone.” But then the next day it was fine.

Well this weekend my family had a small get together in a park so it was a wide space and we were all spread out bc of covid. I haven’t seen my mom since last year because of it and I was really excited to see her. Well her sisters (my aunts) were there and some of their daughters have lost a bunch of weight during lockdown.

My mom came up to me and was like β€œare you jealous? Because they’re skinny and you’re the fattest one here now.” Like I’m not skinny that’s fine I get that but it’s still a hard blow to your self esteem to have your own mom ridicule you in front of people. We’re Hispanic and my boyfriend isn’t so she was speaking in Spanish so he wouldn’t understand and I was so embarrassed. At first I played it off and just nodded and tried to move on from it but she wouldn’t stop. She was like β€œwell you look really fat! Sorry I was the one who has to point it out.” And I was like mom okay I get it. But she kept pushing and was like β€œyou look so bad today too! That shirt makes you look even bigger.” So I started getting tears in my eyes because it hurt my feelings and she’s like β€œthis is why I CANT SAY ANYTHING TO YOU, crybaby.” I was so embarrassed. One of my cousins came over and asked me what was wrong and my mom goes β€œshe’s crying because she’s so fat.” She just wouldn’t stop so I put my hands on her wrists to get her attention and she got angry and was like β€œyou DONT EVER talk to me or touch me like that in front of family again.”

She ended up leaving early and she’s considered one of the nice and cool aunts so everyone was asking her why she was all upset. I’m so upset with her she embarrassed me and now is acting like it’s my fault. I thought our relationship was getting better like I’ve chosen to over look so many things shes said and done to me.

Winners and Losers from Week 2

Week 2 of OWL is in the books and the fans were treated to the first sightings of a few teams. The Justice looked great in their debut while the same can’t be said for London, Boston or Hangzhou. The teams that played in both weeks gave the fans a better sense of who they will be this year. Houston continued its strong start, Chengdu is definitely good but not unstoppable, and the Titans are indeed in for a long season. Let’s take a look at a few specific highlights and lowlights of the weekend.

Winner: The Toilette Bol

Last week opened with the Battle for Texas. This week opened with the Battle for Last. What a mess. But like a good B-movie, it was an entertaining mess. Vancouver vs Paris was truly a treat if you love yelling β€œOh god what are they doing” incredulously at your screen. Bren and Sideshow were the perfect duo to walk us through the chaos, often left to just cackle in laughter at the scene before them. On Gibraltar, both teams trickled into the server room like a free for all deathmatch. Reinhardts trading huge shatters that somehow lost fights. My favorite quote was from Sideshow stating, β€œIt took an entire minute to do that rotation!” The rotation he is speaking of is going top right on Hanamura point A. Uncontested. With Lucio.

Loser: The Comms Listen In

Overall production has been great, fewer pauses that go by faster, the face cams, the desk, there is lots to be proud of. However the comms check in after a round has not been a successful experiment. I remember it was tested out for the Talent Takedown of all things last year and in that case I loved it. But that is because we heard familiar casters joke around. In this case they have to cut it off when teams discuss strategy which is what they most likely will do between rounds. Or the other likely outcome that KSF treated us to is that young gamers tend to swear. I know Blizzard has slightly de-Disneyfied but that still isn’t ideal. I just don’t understand what could be good here? What are we even hoping to hear? I think the best option is to treat it like when players are β€œmic-ed up” in the NBA or NFL. Clip a few quick bursts and put them together for later in the match. β€œHere is what Jake had to say to the team after Round 2…” And then play it back instead of a totally random live listen in.

Winner: Hotba/Tobi

Philly fans must be feeling whiplash. Going from bad scrimbux rumors to the reveal multiple players won’t be able to join the team because of visa issues to the

FAQ: Resident Evil Game Order

This question has been asked in this sub 49 times in the last week, and yes, I counted. I'm going to breakdown just about every way you can play through this series and hope that this question can stop cluttering the sub! Here we go!

I have never played Resident Evil before, but want to get into the series, where should I start?

The answer on this can vary, but if you are going to jump into the series for the first time, start with one of the following:

  1. Resident Evil 2 Remake: The number one answer I've seen is that this title is a perfect starting point to anyone new to the series. And it's easy to see why! It looks and runs beautifully in the RE Engine, has a more "palatable" 3rd person camera, introduces you to some of the most iconic characters in the franchise, and is critically acclaimed basically on every front. It's also a great segue into the older titles if you plan to play them as it introduces you to inventory/enemy management and map design.
  2. Resident Evil 7: This one takes priority of the other two if you plan on playing RE8 as soon as you can. RE8 is a direct sequel and you will miss vital story beats and character motivations if you skip this one. Even if that weren't the case however, RE7 is another great starting point for the franchise. It is the first game in the series to use a first person perspective, which can be a hinderance and even controversial to some. If it doesn't bother you, this can be incredibly immersive and add to the intensity of the experience.* It's the game that brought the series back to its roots with an iconic mansion to explore, inventory management, and an intense atmosphere throughout. If you want to be a part of the new direction Resident Evil is going, this is where to start. This entry is also available to play in VR for those who have the option, and is often cited as one of the best games to play in VR! So definitely give that a try if you're up for it. *(Extra personal opinion about the FPS) It removes a layer between yourself and the horror, while also limiting the motion of the camera. In Third Person, you can safely swing a camera around a corner and peak at what may be around it. This perspective is closer to the fixed camera angle experience as there is no way to "cheat" the camera so to speak.
  3. Resident Evil 1 Remake: Many consider this the height of what Resident Evil is, the definitive experience and a bridge between the PS1 Classics and modern era. It is absolute

We got wrecked [vent]

UPDATE:

We began having pain day two which got steadily worse, so by 3pm went to Urgent Care to be checked out. We also hired a lawyer.

I have a mild concussion and whiplash. He has a musculoskeletal back injury, and muscle injuries to his left side and around his ribs. His gym obsession is the only reason he didn't suffer organ damage from the impact. He may also be concussed, and is having severe headaches.

The car can't be saved or repaired. According to the shop, we should have died. The engine was pushed through the firewall and broken. If either car was going even 5mph faster, it would have crushed us.

I've started having some psych symptoms too. Weird stuff. Anyways.

The current estimate is $32,000 for the car plus $50,000 for pain and suffering, and all medical bills paid. Thank you everyone who has been supportive.

ORIGINAL: I'm jittery with rage now that things have settled.

Background: my best friend owns a 1979 corvette. It got original laquer. He bought it at sixteen, paid it off at eighteen, and has spent the last ten years slowly restoring it.

He replaced the engine, pipes, wiring, AC, t tops, wipers, stereo, seats, guages, interior and exterior lights, wheels, and even redid the frame. There is not a single bolt or fiber he hasn't done work on. He took it from a barely running but decent looking, rusted and moth eaten barn find into a truly mean machine.

It's a resto mod, so most of it is classic, and some is retrofuturistic - LEDs, stuff like that.

It's one of a kind and truly a fabulous car.

He also bought it to work on with his day, who recently died. And after a series of familial conflicts and financial struggles, including two rounds of chemo, this car is the last thing he had left to remember his dad by.

Well, today we decided since it's a sunny, clear day we would take this beauty to the gym. What was meant to be a short, 10 minute drive turned into a nightmare.

We were the second car coming through a light when some asshole going 60 (in a 35) runs into us.

He his us so hard he tore all the fiberglass (fenders, hood, nose) of the front end off, bent the wheel, and broke just about everything in between, car puking fluids.

He bounces off us still not hitting his brakes and hits another car which is parked at the red so hard he forces them into a third car and still doesn't hit his brakes.

He continues pushing the gas and drives those two cars into a fourth car. By this point his car finally had enough and

Captain Amazing

---The perfect 135 Charter Captain---

The following is 100% true & may contain material that is shockingly relatable.

As a private jet pilot, it is common knowledge that you are indeed blessed with the most amazing job of all time.

You fly the rich and famous around the world. You only dare to venture to the most exotic and beautiful locations. What comes to mind? TEB HPN PBI BCT VNY ASE, right? Right.

Billionaires, movie stars, musicians, professional athletes, and politicians step aboard your aircraft and are treated with the sight of you - a glistening charter pilot, wearing a wrinkled polo, worn down shoes, and your one pair of slacks that the company couldn’t simply tack on to your salary to spare you the expense for.

As you greet them, covered in sweat and blood from loading their luggage into the poorly designed and unnecessarily sharp baggage compartment - you scramble to remember what time it is at their destination, in the time-zone that you forgot existed, while attempting to do the calculus required to convert from Greenwich Mean Time, plus or minus daylight savings/standard time, to their estimated time of arrival.

The dreaded question is asked, and you ever-so-confidently tell them the essentially made up arrival time that you figured in your head, which doesn’t quite add up to them, since you didn’t factor in that they were an hour late.

After you hop in the cockpit, your hot-shot PIC reminds you that you need to ask what kind of transportation they have set up at their destination - which of course, you already did.

While calling for the β€œbefore start checklist” - your amazing captain types away to refresh the performance numbers and re-send everything to the company with the current weather. Having half-payed attention during the checklist procedure, and mistakenly reported back to you that he’s ready to start the engines, while still trying to finish his paperwork, you sit back and try to give him a minute to finish his failed multi-tasking.

Realizing that he forgot to pull the throttle out of cutoff during the start sequence, he looks at you, longing for it to be your fault, yet you remind him that he should not have called for a checklist if he wasn’t ready for it.

Captain Amazing starts taxiing to the runway after getting a runway change from the updated ATIS. He’s trying to reprogram the FMS while simultaneously using the tiller. It’s like he wants to see how well the jet goes off-roading.

Isn't it strange that the main thematic push of the story in Cyberpunk and RDR2 is undermined by the gameplay?

WARNING: Major Spoilers for Red Dead Redemption 2 and Cyberpunk 2077!!

If you've finished either RDR2 or Cyberpunk, it's easy to see that mortality is a central theme in both games.

By a certain point in the story, both Arthur and V are dying and aware of it. Both games dedicate time to examine the characters' fears, regrets, and search for meaning with this knowledge. There's consideration of the fragility of life, the value of living, and the benefits of using one's limited time alive to make a difference in the world.

Yet, in both games, the gameplay surrounding this examination of mortality involves Arthur and V killing endless amounts of disposable people without an afterthought. Sometimes the killing is justified in the story, but sometimes the killing is just the next bit of action to keep the game exciting.

I found this gameplay represented almost a completely opposite point to the main story: that life is disposable, not worth valuing too much, and ultimately worth ending for the fun of shooting or stabbing someone.

There's some serious whiplash between a cutscene dedicated to the main character lamenting the tragedy of death and gameplay immediately afterwards of the main character shooting ten people in the head with a shotgun without a second thought. If the main character does not respect the value of the lives around them, why should I care about the main character's value of their own life?

Now, I'm not criticizing the violence in either game. I just think it's weird to make the story in your game about killing people about the tragedy of the killer dying and not the tragedy of the people being killed by the killer.

Such a consistent undermining of the main theme made it hard for me to care much about the story, because I felt like the game itself was not taking its own story and themes seriously. I also do not play very many AAA games, so I found it strange that both Cyberpunk and RDR2 did this.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

2 Plays

CloudAge is not great with first impressions and it struggles to stay engaging after the honeymoon phase. It was a bit of a hassle to grok the rules after my initial read through. I believe more images and examples could have made things much clearer. Honestly, the core gameplay is quite simple once you get into the groove of playing it, so the rulebook does feel unnecessarily difficult.

Additionally, I had heard from multiple people that Chapter 1 of the campaign isn’t even worth playing because it cuts out too much juicy goodness for relatively little improvement in accessibility. I can fully appreciate the intention of improving accessibility and easing gamers into the full experience. Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, The Crew, and Undaunted are just a few recent designs that have successfully accomplished this. But it sounds like the creators of CloudAge took things too far as some players are coming away from barebones Chapter 1 with a bland taste in their mouths.

Thus, we skipped Chapter 1 and dove straight into Chapter 2. The main changes from Chapter 1 to 2 that I noticed include the opportunity for players to choose some of their starting cards (instead of a completely random deal), players receive private objectives to pursue, and the game is longer in both board length and round count for an even bigger finish. If you’re the type of gamer who wants a big payoff for your custom-built airship, or who shuns designs that don’t provide an excellent first play, or who can handle any medium-weight game with general ease, then I too advise that you skip Chapter 1.

During our first play, my skepticism with the game started to fade as I taught the game to my wife and we made it through the initial rounds. While a session starts out with a feeling of aimless wandering, things become more tight and intentional as participants

Spoilers: Changes really lives up to its title

So much changed for Harry in this book.

Lost his car Lost his house Lost his office Lost his dusters Became the Winter Knight Lost the love of his life Gained a family Lost his life?!? (I assume he didn’t, knowing there are many more books.)

The last few paragraphs gave me whiplash.

Thinking Murphy and Dresden are finally gonna get together than nope, Dresden is β€˜dead.’

Changes were plentiful for the supporting cast too.

Plus the Reds are destroyed, meaning the war is over? I doubt it.

This feels like the end of the first act of this story.

Can’t wait to see where we go from here!

Next stop Ghost Story!

Masks & covid | splitting | uBPD mother | vent/rant | DAE?

So my uBPD mother (along with my uBPD father... my father is more overtly narcissistic and sadistic than my mother who is more clingy and dependent but both definitely have BPD patterns just different forms) is trying to convince me that wearing a mask is "illogical". uBPD mother emails me a link to an opinion piece article that tries to make it seem like masks don't matter but the author (and my mother) obviously misunderstood what scientists/researchers are trying to say. I explain this to uBPD mother. I even ask for help on how to word it and explain it from my partner who went to school for biology and has a bio job in a lab so he understands this even more than me. I was very fair and reasonable with my email to her. I wasn't mean nor was I condescending.

At the end of the email I then explain my boundaries. Both of my parents have been bringing this shit up over and over and over and over again since the beginning of the year. I explained that I would just prefer her to not email me anymore with stuff like this because A, I've already had this conversation a million times with both of them so I'm exhausted and annoyed and B, it's upsetting to me because it triggers an emotional wound (I have C-PTSD). I explained that it upset me that I have to educate and teach these things to my mother... especially because I've been doing this sort of thing since I was a child. I've been my parents caretakers as well as my own since I was very young. They didn't do much to help me with my personal struggles (they would do a lot to work against me and I not only had to deal with my struggles alone but I had to deal with them working against me as well) and I've had to figure it all out on my own.

I expressed in a moment of weakness that I deeply desire parents who teach me, who guide me, who protect me from the crazy things out in the world, who I can go to for wisdom and for help and guidance. I expressed that I deeply wish I could have a healthy childhood to look back to, to find hope, strength, wisdom, positive lessons, purpose, and meaning in. Instead I've basically been their parents as well as my own ever since I was a literal child and I have nothing to fall back on (a healthy foundation) in times of need. Emails from her and conversations with her like this trigger that feeling of instability and fear. I want my parents to be parents. I want them to take the responsibility of being parents instead of being so immature and neglectful.

I know this was pr

Why I think healing should be it's own item stat and how it would positively change the game.

So healers have been a big talking point in Smite for... well they have always been a big talking point in Smite. Anyways you've seen all these discussions in the past months, so let's just get into it.

Why should healing power be it's own stat?

  • Healers in Smite are liked by a vocal group of people, and disliked by a very vocal group of people. The main issue I see with healing is that it is tied to damage. Healers then do a lot of damage while healing a lot. Or they are tanks, and are now very hard to kill because they not only have strong base heals but tank a large amount of damage. There are very few items for healers to itemize into for their healing. There is Lotus Crown, for tanky healers, and Asclepius for damage healers (but that item isn't always very popular.) Of course there is Caduceus as a catch all for physical healers. The biggest issue with healers in Smite I can see is that they don't really need to build any specific thing to better their healing... not that they really can anyway. Making healing power it's own stat will decouple healing and damage, meaning people need to make a choice to deal damage, tank, or heal.

Why would that be better for healers?

  • Healers accomplish many things at once with the builds they have access to in Smite. Or they suck at everything. If healers had their own items that gave them stats and effects focusing on their healing and utility, they could actually build their god to play as a dedicated "enchanter" who focuses on providing direct empowerment, utility, healing and/or shielding to their allies. When choosing to build in this way you will sacrifice items otherwise used on damage or tankiness. There is no reason you couldn't still play your favorite healer as a damager or as a tank, just with this change when you do, your healing is going to be weaker. Healers go through a constant cycle of being very strong or very weak. Hi-Rez has tried many different things over the years, but never making healing into it's own stat to build for uniquely and independently of damage. If it was, high healing could find it's own independent niche, instead of also being tied to high damage or extreme tankiness. Yes, I'm sure there will be ways to hybridize heal/tank/damage items, but doing a hybridized build means you sacrifice an extreme.

Healing as a +1

  • Hi-Rez have stated that they believe healing is a additive to a gods kit, and should not define a gods kit. While I see this being the case on som

Tracy's Backstory + Some Analysis

Another bit I already brought up in my Main Storyline Analysis post (https://www.reddit.com/r/IdentityV/comments/l2yr50/main_storyline_analysis/). This one’s going to be about Tracy’s backstory. The reason I wanted to bring her up is because I’ve seen a number of people that think she was the one to cause her dad’s death or was behind the explosion that led to his death. I don’t believe this is true, and I think her extended backstory helps prove this. You can find it here: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/7LiK70P2lhURO3kTBHijnA. As I am no translator, I have to use other places to understand it (including Google Translate), so feel free to correct me.

Tracy Reznik lost her mother soon after she was born. Her father Mark Reznik decided to raise his daughter by running a watch shop alone, so Tracy stayed in Mark's watch studio for a long time since she was a baby. This gentle and honest watchmaker likes to talk to his babbling daughter at work, even if she doesn't understand anything. "The oscillating movement is the beating heart of the clock." He often said that, perhaps it was this habit that made Tracy become more fascinated with machinery when she grew up.

When Tracey was ten years old, Mark found that there were always broken pendulum clocks in the studio that would return to normal the next day. After a specially guarded night, he discovered that Tracy, his own daughter, turned out to be a mechanical genius. The proud father was so elated that his wife had left him the most precious gift of all.

Tracy's talents were brought into full play in the next few years. She combined a mechanical watch with electricity, and used electromagnetic fluctuations to reduce the error of the clock. The Reznik watch studio became famous for this product that does not require frequent time adjustments. Mark opened an independent studio for Tracy and encouraged her to conduct more in-depth research on electricity and machinery. Tracy quickly created some rough robotic figures, which she used to sneak into her father's studio for pranks, trying to hide one or two parts while he was concentrating on work, but Mark would always catch her immediately. Even if the two are not in the same room, the hearts of the father and daughter have never been separated.

*The strong performance of the new-style watches quickly aroused the jealousy of th

Soulless Victories - End

Remembered Recompense

The end was very fucking nigh.

Oscar was reduced from managing ongoing drone attrition to taking active part in it, shoulder to exhausted shoulder with the rest of the whittled group. No more relief or replacements, even the injured reserve sent over to backstop the Center lines. He'd sent the rest packing twenty minutes ago with clear instructions to meet up with the refugees and head out. Where? "South side of town, draw the line at Admin. Grab anything you can swing or chop along the way but get moving; we'll hold as long as we can."

No arguments there-- Dale was managing support for Oscar's side of the fight and knew how to get a group directed. Short, heavy through the chest, with an oddly bowed right knee and an oral fixation for chewing toothpicks. But the man gave directions like a champion and saw things through: Oscar recognized the subtle touch of a Coordinator there, making sure his reserves had leadership. Not bad in a fight either, but very passive about jumping in unless someone literally had a drone wrapped on their face. He took Oscar's shouted instructions with a grim look, spit out a chewed toothpick and left to start everyone moving.

That was fifteen minutes and two casualties ago. Now they were stumbling left to right across the wall trying to cover for missing people, knocking drones and smashing cables with reckless abandon.

Oscar heard a scream and lurched leftward without looking, swinging overhead to crush a trio of straining cables trying to drag a man over their wall. He took a drone to the back for the trouble, feeling malicious weight coming down on his shoulder until the rescued man sent it flying with a hammer strike. They shared momentary eye contact, too breathless to give thanks, then got back to work. The line was holding for now, mostly due to the purge pumps knocking drones about with jets of water. But the flow was slackening now, barely enough to be a nuisance.

Still nothing on the radio from Tinker. It was way past time; Aldi should have called in. Something was terribly wrong.

He swung, connected with another triangular hull and blasted it out over the churning water. Then use the gap to look outwards, over the embattled lines. It was maddening-- he could see the end of the incoming attackers, less than a quarter mile out. A spot where the black surge of writhing cables and flipping triangular death just stopped, leaving behind nothing but thrashed dirt in a straight line to
