Recently Doug Ford has been abusing his power in order to push through a development for protected wetlands that also are home to the nesting area of migratory birds.
The reason he is in such a rush, is the birds are due to arrive by the end of March and therefore the land would be protected until August or so assuming they are able to nest and raise their young as they are protected by federal legislation opposed to provincial (the EXTENT of Doug’s power)
This isn’t the first, nor will it be the last.
Petition to preserve conservation authority (the only defence for the wetlands)
Petition for the case outlined in the post
Doug Ford is also attacking the Green Belt, Ontario’s Fertile Crescent. This is part of a long history Doug has of abusing his power for the benefit of himself and developers at the cost of the environment and the economy. He is lining developers pockets with taxpayer money while simultaneously destroying our unique sensitive environment.
Why are wetlands significant? People often compare the rainforest to be the “lungs” of the planet, and while this has been proven mostly false, wetlands actually provide an extremely important process. It acts as the liver and kidneys for our planet, scrubbing water clean before it enters our Great Lakes. The most common pollutants are agricultural runoff, extremely nutrient dense and the main cause for algae blooms which are detrimental to aquatic life as nothing can survive. These wetlands provide a free service and the true cost is immeasurable.
