Weighted blankets are horrible

I know a lot of people who love their weighted blankets, and I don’t understand it. They’re advertised as being good for anxiety and difficulty sleeping, but my nighttime anxiety and insomnia were only worsened by a weighted blanket. First off, they’re insanely overpriced. I only had one because my grandma got it as a gift and didn’t want it. I can’t fathom spending $50–100 on a blanket. As for comfort, they pin you down and restrict your movement. I had to lift the thing off my body just to roll over. I had a 15lb blanket, which is pretty light compared to other blankets. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest. Lastly, I can’t think of how you would wash a weighted blanket. My washing machine violently shakes with a regular comforter. I feel like a 20lb blanket would break the average washing machine. Weighted blankets suck.

AITA For Refusing Service To An Over-weighted Individual?

I, [16F] had recently applied for a summer job at a waterpark 2 months ago. It was quick cash and I needed the money to begin paying my car loans.

I got the job and started immediately, yet a week into my work i’ve gotten myself into a tough situation. A friend of mine, who also worked at this waterpark, had asked me to fill in her role as a water slide attendant because she needed to stay home and care for her sick sibling.

Of course I said yes and picked up her job, a few hours into handling her shift a group of young girls and their parents came to ride on the slide. I noticed that one of the girls were larger than the others.

I used basic protocol and told everyone there to step onto the scale, and of course the girl exceeded the weight limit. I politely explained that because she didn’t meet the requirements that she couldn’t ride on the slide as it could lead to injuries to others or damage to equipment.

The girl began crying and her mother started to yell at me, stating how vile I was, that my rude behavior would not be tolerated and that I shouldn’t not allow someone to not ride due to their weight.

She explained, quite loudly, that I don’t understand what it’s like to be the bigger girl, how I should be supporting body positivity and allow her daughter to go on the slide.

Still I refused any services.

The lady stormed off shouting that she was going to tell my manger and corporate of my awful assistance.

So AITA?

Weighted rows vs band-resisted rows

I've been training inverted rows for some time now, in combination with weighted pull-ups. Now I can perform sets of elevated inverted (completely horizontal) rows for sets of 30 reps. I've progressed to so many reps because I still found it useful for squeezing a little more horizontal pulling strength & overall hypertrophy, but beyond this (>30 reps) it's mostly endurance. I want to increase intensity, and possible next progressions are:

- Front lever row variations

- Arched rows --> one arm rows

- Weighted rows

- Band-resisted rows

My goal for rows is emphasizing upper back (rhomboids, mid traps, rear delts, etc) hypertrophy as much as possible, while de-emphasizing the lats, because weighted pull-ups are a superior exercise for that.

The problem with front lever rows, archer/one arm rows and weighted rows progressions is that I feel my lats are the primary muscle being targeted. I mean: it's mostly a lat exercise, instead an upper back exercise. In other words: shoulder extension (lat function) dominate over scapular retraction (upper back function). Also, if I do intense low reps (5-12 RM), the initial lats explosive contraction at the bottom dominates the movement and there's barely any upper back muscle contraction at the top.

This doesn't happen with band-resisted rows. It seems the perfect upper back exercise, superior to front levers, one arm rows and weighted rows, because now lats can pull explosively at the bottom, but also, shoulder&scapular retractors have to work extra hard to complete a full ROM rep.

The only problem is that the band-resisted row is a very rare exercise, hardly seen or recommended by experts, and I wonder why. Is its lack of popularity explained by its lack of effectiveness, or due to lack of knowledge/ignorance by most (>99%) coaches about this exercise?

Stuck with my weighted pull up

Hi, Im 21M, 168cm (5’ 6 i think) @ 65 kg (145lbs). Ive been doing calisthenics consistently for about 3 years now. My goal has always been strength rather than mass so about 2 years ago I started doing weighted calisthenics. Around that time i also started doing complementary work with free weights and machines.

I had worked my way up to a +35kg weighted pull up (1RM) about 4 months ago. Since then, I haven’t progressed at all. Here is my routine on pull day, which is twice a week:

Warm up: push ups 3x1 Slow pull ups 3x3 Explosive pull up 1x5 +10kg weighted pull ups

Main sets:

5x3 +30kg pull ups (On the first sets i will instantly drop the weight to 25kg and do 2 or 3 more reps)

3x15 Dropset pull ups (5 with 20kg, 5 with 10kg, and 5 with bw)

5x8-10 cable rows with bw

5 sets front lever holds/ ice cream makers

I will also do ring curls and cable/barbell curls on a separate day as complementary work. But never to the point where i will be even close to fatigue for pull day.

I once saw a video where it said a deload phase was necessary. So 3 months ago for 3 weeks i switched the 5x3 with 30 kg sets for 5x6-8 with 20 kg and no dropsets. When i switched back i noticed no difference on my 1 rep max or on my regular workout getting easier.

The only thing i have noticed since then, is that mostly after the dropsets, i have a huge bicep pump, but my back feels completely fine. I have tried practicing the technique with bw, pulling my shoulderblades down and then trying to pull my chest to the bar, but i still feel like i engage my arms a lot more than my back. Could this be the problem?

Also, when trying a heavier pull up(40kg, 45kg even 50kg) i have now trouble pulling until my arms are at 90 degrees. But from then im just stuck. Just wanted to leave it out there, dont know if it means something.

Im open to suggestions to improve my workout routine, which is the same I’ve been using the last 2 months. My goal is to hit a +50kg pull up or the one arm pull, whatever happens first.

[52 F] Weighted Overhead Barbell Squats = Fall, go boom

I'm 52F and just started lifting. I have been attending a group strength class 3x p/ week for the past six weeks. Total beginner. Today I was doing overhead squats with a 35# bar 8x 4 sets. On the last set, I pushed myself to go faster, and I fell over on the last rep. I landed on a rubber carpet. No injuries, just wounded my pride.

But I had the sobering realization that my overhead strength and stability are pretty shitty. I'm the only woman in a class of predominantly 30-40 yo M. And I hate to poorly represent older women in such a setting. It's also a bit lonely. I do love the coaches, but they are also 30-40 yo M.

  • I'm wondering what you would do in a similar situation.
Would you work on overhead strength and stability at home? If so, what would you do?
Or, would you drop the group class and work out on your own until you could get into the shape you needed to get up to speed in a group class?
Or, would you get a private lifting coach? Even online?
Or, would you work harder to try and find a group class with people of a similar demographic?

I'm so new to lifting, I hate to feel discouraged from the start, but I do also need to be realistic about my age and fitness level.

Your thoughts and experienced feedback appreciated.

Opinion: PVP weighted too heavily in Gambit.

Too many invasions, and too high a penalty for death while the Primeval is up reduces Gambit to β€œwho has the better PVP player”.

I appreciate the hybrid nature of Gambit, but instead of a team having to work together to achieve an efficient victory, it becomes the last two minutes of a basketball game, where everything the mode is about becomes meaningless as long as you can finagle the PVP mechanic.

It has completely warped strategies and stifles the improv team building that lies at the heart of the mode - instead of finding out quickly what your teammates are best suited to and the roles everyone plays, you can just keep the other team suppressed through PVP.

And yes, either team can do this so git gud scrub, but this isn’t the Crucible. It’s competitive PVE. It’s supposed to be about which team can work together better - lone wolfing should be discouraged, not incentivized. A team full of chest thumping pew pew jocks SHOULD lose to a competent Chess Club.

But as long as you have one Deadeye McHeadshot on your team, returning the other team’s Primeval to full health is a snap. And that’s really the rub - it’s not that invasions are a pain in the nethers, it’s that the penalty and frequency are way too high, making any other strategy meaningless.

Instead of an occasional pulse-raiser, it becomes this griefer nonsense where a team gets deathlocked regardless of how good they are at the actual PVE and teamwork aspect of the mode.

And no shade to great players - sometimes they’re on your side, sometimes they’re not, but ya do your best, and if it isn’t enough, well, GG, chum.

But being able to full reset the Primeval based on one person’s skill completely ruins the point of co-op, and makes those of us who are NOT PVP focused (or new players, or players new to Gambit) functionally a liability - it’s literally more advantageous to hide, as there’s more of a penalty for dying than the damage you’d do in the same time frame. It’s absurd.

I love Gambit. I love sussing out each new team, working together or dying alone, getting to play a competitive mode that doesn’t require 360 no scope l33tness. Hey, I love that brilliant solo players have to figure out that greedy stat-padding doesn’t win matches.

And watching a team on either side chew through the match with flawless cooperation is a thing of beauty, even when it’s you getting pwned.

But it’s now a PVP mode full of soft targets distracted by what is supposed to be the real mission. And it

[Offer] Weighted Blanket

Hey there. I posted an offer a little while ago to buy someone with depression and/or anxiety a weighted blanket. The offer got quite a few responses. I'm not feeling well at all myself lately and am self-isolating because of it, and I've got a little extra money this month again, so I thought I'd send the offer out once more. I'd like to buy someone who has depression and/or anxiety, someone who cannot at the moment afford to buy one, a weighted blanket. If the offer receives more than one response, I'll just pick someone randomly. I hope everyone out there is having a good day.

Edit: Apologies, offer is limited to U.S. I'm afraid I can't afford international shipping.

Edit: I'll keep the offer open for another day, and do the random drawing tomorrow. Very best wishes to everyone.

Edit: Hi there everyone. I'm going to go ahead and close the offer. I wish I could do more for all of you. I went ahead and gave everyone a number based on the order in which everyone posted and used a random number generator to select a number. It selected u/RubIll6548. I wish everyone only the best.

Does practicing weighted carries (e.g pinch blocks) help with climbing?

First off, apologies if this has been asked before - I tried searching several times here and in r/griptraining but couldn't find what I was looking for.

For training grip strength, especially pinches it seems, people recommend building weighted blocks for you to lifted off the ground, like tying weights to a 2x4 block and pinching that off the ground.

My question is, how much does this translate to above-head holds? I think I've read in a few different places (including "Training for Climbing") that grip strength is very positionally specific. Not just pinch width, but also wrist orientation and shoulder angle (directly overhead vs angled away from body). Given how sensitive strengths seem to be to these positions, I'm curious how much / what exactly pinch blocks help with. Is holding a pinch block off the ground the functionally same thing as hanging off pinch blocks hanging from a bar? If I try doing straight arm lifts while pinching the blocks does that simulate pinching holds at different angles on the wall?

If pinch blocks are effective, could you use a similar idea for crimps?

This one blog was helpful / inspired this question.

I think a 19 team competition with a reverse fixture and weighted return matchups could work.

So, hear me out.

You bring in Tassie by 2028. That gives every party involved time to get them up and going and hopefully competitive from day dot.

Nine games per round, but add an extra round to get nine games added to the media broadcasting deal. The bye will allow players to stay fresher and reduce the risk of injury. It will make it easier to do a rolling fixture because the bye team could play on a Thursday or Friday night against a team that played on Saturday if they're travelling well enough. I'd include Thursday nights as a permanent addition to the fixture.

Every team would play each other once in the first 18 rounds, reversing the fixture every year, and doing so in a balanced way. For example, if Essendon plays Adelaide at home, they play Port away; if Sydney plays Brisbane at home, they play Gold Coast away; interstate teams play five Victorian teams at home, five away, and all these fixtures are flipped the following year.

For rounds 19-23, break the 19 teams into three groups: 1-7, 8-13, and 14-19. The top 7 don't play more than one team from the bottom 6, but you double up against two teams from your bracket and two in the one above or below you. You'd still get 2x western derbies etc, and the AFL could schedule some other big blockbuster return games with some creativity.

There is no need for team 20 to come into the competition until it's economically and financially feasible. They should be patient on team 20 and not use it as an excuse to keep Tassie out of the AFL.

Edit: As pointed out in the thread, one big problem is what happens to the 5 teams that get a bye in the last 5 rounds. This is a good point and I don't know how difficult it'd be but perhaps you could give those byes to the bottom five teams because the return fixture is supposed to be harder for the top sides. But that would be a challenge.

Recently saw a physio for my wrist, and while I was there I asked about training, and he recommended not doing weighted pull ups as it will damage my growth plates. I was planning on doing them as I am 16 and want to take full advantage of the testosterone in my body so it is easier to become stronger. Anyone know anything about this?

I just came back from my vacation and I weighted myself, went from 112 lbs to 120. I tried to workout everyday while I was there and got my steps in. and tried to eat let’s carbs. And apparently I’m get a head cold as well. You think I should up my workout routine or will to come off on it’s own?
