Hello Reddit. I am a 31 year old in the United States. I recently resigned from my job in law enforcement (it just wasn't right for me) to pursue a career in web development. Originally, I thought that I could teach myself everything that I needed to know using tutorials. I started with the freecodecamp and codecademy to learn the HTML/CSS/JavaScript that I thought I needed. I started watching Udemy videos to learn more but I feel like I can't focus and learn what I need to learn. I quickly found out that I lack the discipline to teach myself. I've now wasted 5 months (I resigned on Jan. 1st) and know basic HTML/CSS(bootstrap/flexbox) and Javascript (for loops etc). I feel the structure of a bootcamp would be good for me. Has anyone attended a bootcamp, any feedback would be great! Looking at appAcademy or Thinkful. (Or if anyone wants to mentor me :)) Thanks for your time!
TL;DR: Tell me what to do with my life.
Hello r/Fantasy
When I was younger--and poorer--I had a hard time finding more stuff to read, and thatβs when I lucked out and fell down the webserial rabbit hole.
For those of you unaware, webserials (web-serials? webnovels?) are stories written and distributed online, usually entirely for free. For authors, that means no barriers to entry, and an opportunity to both put their work out there and maybe make a small pittance, and for readers it means free fiction, often with a community around it that allows them to talk and discuss the story they're reading.
Itβs very reminiscent of serialized fiction from way back when, what Dickens and Conan Doyle did, but with a more modern take.
I think the most famous example of a story that went from web-serial to fully published might be Weirβs The Martian, which was initially posted on his site, then added to Amazon Kindle and finally picked up by a publisher.
Basically, these are stories that are published online, for free, and that anyone can read.
Some of the bigger, more popular stories include:
>1.6 Million words (6,109 pages)
An introverted teenage girl with an unconventional superpower, Taylor goes out in costume to find escape from a deeply unhappy and frustrated civilian life. Her first attempt at taking down a supervillain sees her mistaken for one, thrusting her into the midst of the local βcapeβ sceneβs politics, unwritten rules, and ambiguous morals. As she risks life and limb, Taylor faces the dilemma of having to do the wrong things for the right reasons.
>800K words (2,930 pages)
Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems.

>As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of.
>
>*On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both with
Sorry for the long read..
tldr; Gemini is awesome, the web sucks
This post is kinda directed at those of us either approaching or past our 40's. If you are outside that bracket, awesome and hope this helps you discover another way to use the 'internet', not the 'WEB'; they are different.
Who of us remembers BBS's, America Online and CompuServe?
I was reading about the "Net" in a magazine called .Net in 1993 and couldn't wait to get surf'n (lol). It all sounded so exciting, a new world to explore ..... and it was ..... for a time .....
Skip forward 30+ years.
The web is broken, EVERYTHING tracks us, advertising is everywhere and data is collected and considered worth more than gold, but is it really?
Enter; Project GEMINI
Project Gemini aims to sit between GOPHER and the WEB; meaning a little more bells and whistles than GOPHER (which was more popular over http for some time, before the web kicked it's ass) far less (very intentionally) than the web.
Imagine a space that is internet connected with no advertising, no tracking, no hacking and in my opinion is quite beautiful in the sense that is resembles the very early and interesting stages of the internet back in the 90s.
Well, wish no more. Gemini is here and it is glorious.
I've spent many hours using command line interfaces and Graphical User Interfaces to narrow down my favorites to
CLI client: Amfora
GUI client: LaGrange
My experiences of using this 'Small web' have been amazing. Just opening a tab in firefox; you can feel the weight and difference, the web appears to me as vapid and heavy with so many dark patters aimed right at me to keep me addicted and doom scrolling.
Not any more, I actually enjoy reading about every person on the Gemini network and they all seem like friends that i haven't met yet; So much in common, such as all of us feeling utterly exhausted with the WWW and defeated with the over-commercialization of it.
Looking forward to seeing more of us on the Gemini Network.
I'm going through The Odin Project and I have looked around on Google as well and it says that Linux and MacOS is preferred over windows for web development. Why is this so?
So many times I've seen people asking how fast a certain car is or how does "stage 1" compare to "stage 2". I was also sick of going to YouTube to watch a drawn out 10 minute drag race that only takes 10 seconds to happen. So in my free time, I've been working on software to simulate straight line acceleration for a wide range of cars. I evolved this into a free website where you can add mods to cars and see how it affects their performance. You can modify torque curves, remove weight, and change wheels/tires. The website is Motor Matchup
If you have a chance, check it out and try to break things. I'm really looking for feedback from car people who know their stuff. Post any suggestions or just let me know if it's totally useless to you. Some things I plan to work on in the future:
Edit: Wow, thank you all for taking the time to check out the site and provide feedback! First thing on the todo list is add way more cars and verify a ton of specs (Seems there are some inconsistencies for various vehicles). I think I'll come up with a way to crowdsource this so the dataset can improve and expand over time. There are a ton of other great suggestions that I'm going to start thinking about as well.
I hope this is allowed but, if not, feel free to delete this, mods.
I donβt browse here but I know my husband does because he tells me about the posts. Heβs a self-taught developer (a little under one year of experience) and he just got a fantastic remote job and Iβm so proud of him! I love you, u/convsdude99 β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
Edit: thank you for the awards π You guys are too sweet!
If you really describe to your players how infested a room is, they will keep searching for a large spider. That is until they try to walk through the webs, and they all come to life as mimics. Any thoughts on similar mimic misdirects o could go for in the future?

I just canβt afford a bootcamp and I want to try to learn as much as I can online. I donβt mind paying for some courses here and there, especially courses that may have a mentor available. Is it possible to learn enough to land a job if I commit to a solid 5 months? I have the time and patience, but lacking all experience in this field.
Also, what are courses you would recommend besides Codecademy and freecodecamp(I only say that because I plan on taking their courses anyways.) Iβve researched so much and have read about so many different experiences people have had, just thought I would ask Reddit. Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated.
EDIT: I want to make it clear that I would be looking for a junior level position or freelance work, of course. I live about an hour and a half outside San Francisco, so I know thereβs a lot of competition. Also I really appreciate the insane amount of feedback, I am still getting through most of these comments and taking notes on all your suggestions. Thank you!!!
And much to my dismay I found that there isn't one. Not only that but the big gut punch is that I found this article on the topic: https://www.dailystartreknews.com/read/fan-petition-asks-for-star-trek-deep-space-nines-andrew-robinson-to-make-garak-biography-audiobook
The TLDR is Andrew Robinson said he would love to record the audiobook in character however he can't because Simon & Schuster own the book rights and they'd have to green light it, which it appears they have no interest in doing.
I know I'd personally pay top dollar for something like this. What about you folks?
I'm talking about AI comments, deepfakes (fake interviews, fake podcasts, fake streamers, etc. etc.) It strikes me as an unsustainable condition.
My prediction is basically that in the not too distant future people will be unable to consistently distinguish between real and fake content, so they'll begin to distrust all sources of information. On top of that, there will be so much fake content that the internet will lose the "authenticity" that's been driving engagement with the current model of youtubers, streamers, and podcasters. Without the lustre of "unfiltered truth" it will cease to have as much appeal.
We're already seeing trends in this direction where comment botting has become a problem and is beginning to be used to game the algorithms that determine what we see... which is essentially AI's manipulating AI's to manipulate humans.
Interested to see what this sub thinks about this prediction.
