Holland, Michigan's Downtown has heated streets and sidewalks that melt snow and ice. The system utilizes wastewater from a nearby power plant which circulates through 120 miles of plastic piping underneath the pavement. It can melt an inch of snow an hour even at 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

[QLD] More wastewater samples test positive to COVID-19

19 January 2021

Fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in sewerage at three more sites in Queensland.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said viral fragments of SARS-CoV-2 had been detected at wastewater treatment plants at Merrimac (Gold Coast), Cairns North and Cannonvale (Airlie Beach area).

β€œWhile this does not mean we have new cases of COVID-19 in these communities, we are treating these detections seriously,” Dr Young said.

β€œA positive sewage result means that someone who has been infected was shedding the virus. Infected people can shed viral fragments and that shedding can happen for several weeks after the person is no longer infectious.”

The samples were collected from the wastewater treatment plants last week.

β€œI continue to urge anyone who feels unwell in these communities to get tested and isolate,” Dr Young said.

β€œSymptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, and loss of taste or smell.

β€œIf there is a case we are not yet aware of, it is critical we detect it through our testing mechanisms as quickly as possible to contain any potential spread.”

[VIC] Coronavirus fragments detected in Lakes Entrance wastewater

1 January 2021

Viral fragments have been detected in a sample of wastewater taken from the inlet to the Lakes Entrance wastewater treatment plant on 29 December.

The Department of Health and Human Services is urging anyone in the Lakes Entrance area with any coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms, no matter how mild, to get tested and stay home until they receive their result.

Bairnsdale Regional Health Services drive-through testing site is open from 9am to 5pm on New Year’s Day and over the weekend.

There will be an increase in wastewater samples taken from Lakes Entrance following the unexpected result.

Wastewater monitoring is continuing at more than 60 locations across Victoria. Further information about the wastewater testing program can be found on the Wastewater monitoring web page.

A full list of all Victorian testing sites, including operating hours, can be found at our Where to get tested page.

Information regarding COVID-19 is available at the Department of Health and Human Services website or by calling 1800 675 398.

I'm thinking of applying to the wastewater program at my local community college. I have a few questions about the job
  1. First off How do you like it?
  2. Is there more jobs in wastewater as opposed to water treatment
  3. Is it hard to find a job in it? I live in southern nevada
  4. Do you go home smelling? I don't mind a bad smell at work but I worry about smelling bad outside of work
  5. What are the cons of the job? I see alot of people complaining about shift work. I currently work security in a casino so I'm use to nights weekends holidays all that jazz.
  6. If there's anything else you want to add please let me know the program is about year and a half http://catalog.csn.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=3&poid=742.

I work at a wastewater treatment plant

I’m clean now for a few years, but today at work I saw a full bottle of percs come through the head works (yes you’d be surprised how much stuff and how big of stuff can make it through there) I had so many thoughts at once. My first thought was, grab it!! Then I remembered I’m clean. It’s true, once an addict always an addict.

Would I actually grab those and eat them back in the day? Probably yes, gladly. I also wonder how it got there. Did someone just have a β€œmoment” and say FUCK THIS junkie life and flush their stash? Did they actually stay clean? Are they in WD right now as we speak? Or did they go and get well 2 hours later and feel like a fuckin moron for flushing their shit to begin with? Was that the 100th time they’ve tried to quit and failed? Or was it a teenager junkies mom throwing the bottle down the toilet? Yelling and screaming at him and never having an ounce of empathy for what it’s like to be an addict to begin with? Was it some old granny who thinks that’s the best way to dispose of old pills? Did a dope head on the street fumble with his bottle in the rain and accidentally drop it down the storm drain? Did he try desperately to reach it by opening the manhole with all his strength only to realize they were washed away forever?

How did that glorious, delicious, completely full bottle of joy and warmth and happiness and ruin and despair and loss and sickness join the flow of the city’s shit and piss all the way to where it is now, right in front of an old junkie like me?

Fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in sewage at four more sites in Queensland.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said viral fragments of SARS-CoV-2 had been detected at wastewater treatment plants at Mackay South, Goodna, Wacol and Carole Park.
