Songs where the backing vocalist overshadows the lead vocals?

This is something I notice very clearly in songs written by Ed Sheeran. Namely Moves by Olly Murs, 2002 by Anne-Marie, Your Song by Rita Ora and Love Yourself by Justin Bieber.

You also tend to notice when he writes these songs as well judging by the lyrics. Moves, Strip It Down and Stack It Up really stick out lyrically for all the wrong reasons.

Ty Dolla Sign is also very loud on Kanye's Only One. You can tell Kanye was trying so hard that they had to turn up Ty to make up for Kanye's shortcomings.

Also Same Old Love has Charli all over the chorus.

Who is the best male vocalist today?

And by today, I mean someone who is still releasing music or is still somewhat relevant in 2021. Who do you think is the best? I’m a big vocals person, so I appreciate good vocals more than anything.

Two of the best In my opinion:

  • Brendon Urie. He has such great vocal range and a phenomenal falsetto.

  • Bruno Mars. His vocals are just always on point.

IIL older female vocalists, WEWIL?

I really like female singers with lower vocal ranges, and have recently noticed how little older women are represented in my music library (and in popular music in general sadly).

I really enjoy the voices of older singers in general, they often sound much more refined and personal to my ears.

I'll take suggestions for people more in the soprano range as well, but I especially love the lower (think contralto) ranges.

Thanks for reading my post!

Edit: Oh lawd that's a lot of suggestions, thanks, everyone, I'll start working my way through!

News that controversial As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis accidentally set himself on fire sparks heated discussion in r/Metalcore over his relevance.

Contextual article by Loudwire.

In perhaps r/nottheonion levels of irony, AILD's new album after Tim reformed the band upon his release from prison was called Shaped By Fire.

For many r/metalcore users, Tim can't shed the ashes of his past:

> "In May 2013, As I Lay Dying vocalist Tim Lambesis was arrested for attempting to hire a hitman to murder his estranged wife. He was sentenced to serve 6 years in prison but was released on parole in 2016. One year after his release posted an apology to his family." > > Why'd they have to sign the article off with this? Let the man get on with his life. > > > Right? I thought the same thing. Are they still going to be saying this 10 or 20 years from now? Leave it in the past.
>
> > > Do you think murder-for-hire is the same thing as stealing a candy bar or something? Imagine if your own father had tried to hire someone to kill your mom. Would you seriously be like "cmon dude, Dad did his time, it was like 5 years ago, whats the big deal?"

Fuck this guy

Recent songs with two vocalists harmonizing?

One of the key details that stood out for me during Lady Gaga's VMA performance was when she brought Ariana Grande on stage and they struck the hook of "Rain on Me."

Gaga belted, '"I'd rather be..." while Grande followed suit with a complimentary set of bars. Was that new? I don't know why I'd never noticed the harmony on the track before. I'd listened to it countless times. Maybe I was too deep into the drama of the song. But it was prominent in the performance.

It got me thinking that I don't recall many harmonies happening on current pop tracks. There are guest vocalists and featured performers, but not a lot of duets like in the 90s.

What are some more recent examples you know of? Those harmonies always hook me.

I prefer a vocalist with unique vocal color that doesn't do high notes, over a vocalist that does high notes but has a generic voice

Despite my love for high/long notes, if a vocalist has a superb sounding or unique voice and rarely does high notes, I would prefer that over a vocalist that does high notes but has a generic voice. People like to claim vocalists as bad vocalists just because they don't belt or sing high notes. While high notes are really impressive, if they have a generic voice, then they don't sound that special whenever they aren't belting out a note. Look at D.O. from EXO, he rarely sings high/long notes, but is still considered one of the best vocalists in Kpop. His vocal color is unique and he's more noticed for his runs and adlibs. Same with Joy from Red Velvet.

The pressure NingNing faces continuing the legacy of legendary SM main vocalists.

I'm worried about all the pressure NingNing will be facing continuing the legacy of all the legendary vocalists who came before her. SM's groups always have one of it not the best vocalist of their respective generations. They had SUJU KRY, Taeyeon, Jonghyun, Luna, ChenBaekSoo, Wendy, and 127 Trinity who were all considered to be top-tier vocalists during their careers/currently (We can include Bada, Lina, and Changmin but I'm not 100% sure about them). The female main vocalist that came right before her (Wendy) is widely considered the best 3rd gen female vocalist (yes, even over Wheein, Yuju, and Solar). All those names have set an incredibly high bar for her and I hope the pressure and hate doesn't get to her. People have already been saying that SM's main vocalists have been degrading ever since Wendy but I disagree since 127 Trinity, Xiaojun, and Renjun are all pretty amazing vocalists and are part of the best in the industry currently. I hope NingNing gets to showcase her talent in the future since she hasn't really gotten the opportunity to besides her SYNK vid which was amazing. In fact, Winter has shown more live vocals through the radio show, and damn she sounds great. She has some competition in this generation (IZ*ONE Yuri, Secret Number Denise, LOONA Chuu, etc.) and I'm rooting for her to blow everyone away. Her stage presence is amazing and I'm sure it'll get better once SM (hopefully) lets them sing live.

Chenle is a very underrated vocalist and in my opinion the most stable vocalist in whole NCT

I wanted to do a Chenle appreciation post for a long time and today is just the day. I had no idea where to post this I don't know if this is an unpopular or popular opinion and someone in my time line was just accused of being a Haechan anti just because they said this. So I also thought about going to the kpoprants. But in the end this post became a mix of an appreciation, rant and opinion so here you go.

It's no secret that Chenle started his career very early, held solo concerts and then joined SM. There is a tweet saying he is same ahe with 4th gen idols, debuting in 3rd gen with 2nd gen experience which is true. Chenle was also invited to sing a solo performance at golden hall of vienna which sets the record as the youngest to perform there. He was 9 years old when he did this!

Now in my opinion Chenle is a very underrated vocalist because I never see people talking about it. I don't claim he has the best technique in NCT per se but he is the most stable among them especially in Dream. I never heard his voice crack or sing out of tune and he manages to perform incredibly well without struggling with breathing. I think we should talk more about Chenle's vocals because I am sure most of non fans are not even aware of how amazing he is.

Back to my rant, someone said this on twitter and get accused of being a Haechan anti which is so weird to me. It's not the first time or the most ridiculous reason to be accused of being an anti. Haechan fans accused many people being anti for smallest reasons like sharing one picture Haechan wasn't in, not posting Markhyuck moments... but still it doesn't make it better. I genuinely think Chenle IS an underrated vocalist and THE MOST STABLE out of them and this shouldn't make me an anti. I know people in twitter are ridiculous and I shouldn't bring them here but today that upset me and I wanted to rant a little bit. This also made me realizes how underhyped Chenle is. If Nctzens paid attention to Chenle's abilities rather than his family wealth I think this situation would be better.

I hope we can get a Chenle cover or original music in NCT channels because right now he is the only main vocalist with no cover. Today in Kun's relay cam I saw him training with Kun which made me think he still tries his best to improve and I wish he could showcase that to everyone.

Kino, 22: main dancer, vocalist, occasional rapper, songwriter & producer, top 100 idol with most copyrights, choreographer, album cover artist, god tier visual, LGBT supporter, etc.

Look, I recently rediscovered Kino's self-produced song LONELY along with its cuteness overload MV, my life has been categorically ruined, and since his birthday's coming up I have gotta write an appreciation post for this extremely passionate and multi-talented guy.

Kino (Kang Hyunggu) was born January 27 1998. He attended Hanlim School of Performing Arts with friends Cho Seungyoun (WOODZ), GOT7 Yugyeom, AB6IX Woong, and TBZ Hyunjae (OnlyOneOf Yoojung too, he mentioned Kino & the others in his debut album), and was a JYP trainee for a while before moving to Cube and debuting in Pentagon on October 10th 2016 at the age of 18. By a pretty impressive coincidence he is only 4 days older than Pentagon's maknae Wooseok and only 4 days younger than another member Yuto, thus forming PTG's maknae trio.

Kino also has a Soundcloud under the name Knnovation, and he's a part of MOLA, a friend & music collaboration group also consisting of Park Jimin (Jamie), Cho Seungyoun (WOODZ), Seventeen's Vernon, and non-idols NATHAN (you might know him as a producer) and HOHO. There's even a song on Jamie's 2nd mini album largely dedicated to roasting Kino for not picking up the phone when they call.

#Dance/Performance Kino is an incredible dancer but I think what really elevates his skills is his charisma, expressions and presence on stage. I always get the sense he has an extremely deep passion for performing and I don't think I've ever seen a performance where he wasn't 100% engaged with every single thing he's doing, particularly his facial expressions. For some examples, try:

Does anyone else get agitated when fans say β€œ______ is technically a stronger vocalist than ______” in a group, when it clearly isn’t the case?

Maybe this is just me, but whenever people try and say their fave is the best technical singer amongst the group when they aren’t, I kinda get mad cause that’s doing an injustice to the member who actually deserves the credit...

For an example, (this is no hate at all) but I’ve seen this happen a lot with the group (G)I-DLE. I’ve seen a lot of people state Minnie is a better vocalist than Miyeon, and that’s just not true.(I’ve been a professional singer for a few years now)

I don’t wanna get into it too much cause I don’t wanna start any fights, but it’s clear Miyeon overall has the upper edge in supporting her notes, breath support, pitch, grounded tone, and she’s less shouty when reaching for notes just to name a few. Minnie for sure has a unique stylistic voice, but it’s technically wrong to say she is a stronger vocalist compared to Miyeon.

And no, this isn’t opinion based, it’s who is technically stronger at singing. It would be a different story if someone said β€œ____ is my favorite vocalist in ______.” because that is an opinion.

It just makes me annoyed when people put on this narrative, that could ultimately have many people(who aren’t educated in singing) believing in false information.

JYP should just stop debuting vocalists

At least in their girl groups, bc they clearly don’t know how to manage or promote them at all nor do they showcase them within the group so it’s just a waste of everyone’s time tbh. Ik people have complained here & there about how they do nothing for Lia or 3mix but this really puts things into perspective tbh. I already knew they weren’t even doing the bare minimum but when you say it like that it shows they’re doing below below the bare minimum. In general but especially when you think about the fact that both their ggs get dragged daily for their vocals so they should be promoting their most vocally talented idols more than any company out there. That’s a level of β€œI don’t care” &/or just straight incompetence that can’t be saved tbh so I think they should just flat out stop debuting vocalists altogether. The company hardly has any anyways, their vocal training sucks & the last exposure any of the possible main vocalists of the next group had was on kpop star 5 years ago. So the next group will probably be in the exact same boat as Twice & Itzy, dance heavy with most the songs not showcasing vocals. They could probably go without a true main vocalist so I really hope they just don’t choose one. That poor girl is gonna go to waste unfortunately.

While we’re on that note I also lowkey agree w the reasoning of people who say Lia should leave Itzy for her own benefit. I don’t think she actually should for obvious reasons but they do make a lot of really good points with the why. If it wouldn’t be such a messy + negative process w hate as a big factor then I’d probably say it too. But I do hope her & the whole of 3mix leave when the contract is up unless there is some serious change, sucks for the group but at some point they as individuals matter more.

I’ve never seen this opinion be said & I think most people just yell at jyp to get it together rather than telling them to give it up so I’m pretty sure this is unpopular. I hope they get it together for Jihyo & Lia & I’ll continue to yell for them too, but they should just save the future girls the trouble honestly.

Edit: I don’t mean the next group shouldn’t sing. I mean they should stop wasting their most vocally talented people since they’re not utilized & other less vocally talented people end up singing more anyways.

My Deathcore Vocalist Tier List

As a vocalist myself, I have the most appreciation for deathcore vocalists more than almost any genre. We're all familiar with the stereotype that it doesn't take much skill but anyone who has tried, will know that's not the case. I'm slightly bored so I thought I'd share where I think some of the vocalists of the top deathcore bands fall in terms of what I think of them.

For those wondering I will be basing my opinions off of a few things like variety of technique, enunciation, live performance etc. I will not be weighing vocal "power" as much as some people would. While loud and powerful screams are certainly impressive, there is pretty much no situation in a serious deathcore setting that a vocalist will not be using a mic which in my opinion, greatly reduces the impact that vocal power brings.

Disclaimer 1: I know I will forget some obvious people so instead of telling me how dumb I was to leave them off, let's further the discussion and tell me where you would put the person I forgot.

Disclaimer 2: For the purposes of this discussion, I only care about these people as vocalists. People like CJ McCreery and Greg Gilbert will still be included and be judged on vocal talent only. Some people don't like to separate the artist from the person, but I am not one of those people.

Disclaimer 3: Vocalists are not ranked within tiers. Whatever order someone is in a particular tier is completely arbitrary.

Final Disclaimer: Obviously these are my opinions. I know there will be disagreements about certain placings. Let's have some friendly discussion and tell me why you think I'm wrong.

S Tier:

Dickie Allen (Infant Annihilator, Scumfuck)- I don't think this will be at all controversial much like some of the others in this tier. The only disagreement I can see is that his most notable band is studio only. That being said, although you could say Travis Ryan invented the "tunnel throat", no one is more responsible for it's prevalence in deathcore today than Dickie. He has arguably the most recognizable voice in the genre and is doing techniques no one else has ever even considered.

Ben Duerr (Shadow of Intent, Hollow Prophet)- Ben has cemented himself as one of the premier vocalists in the genre with incredibly impressive studio work and live performances that sound just as good. I like to think of Ben as Phil Bozeman on steroids. He took Phil's signature delivery and dialed it up to 10. I've lost count of how many vocalists I've seen attempting to c

(G)I-DLE have some of the best vocalists of the current kpop generation.

Now I know a few people have some issues with the vocal skills of one member in particular but aside from that, 5/6 of g idle are very strong vocalists

I actually stumbled across a video of their concert performance and the vocal line, which I guess to be Minnie, Miyeon, and Yuqi blew me away. The harmonizations were absolutely beautiful. Naturally I looked for more performances and i think they have very strong vocal performances across the board.

Minnie and Miyeon in particular are very good. Minnie has a very unique voice which manages to give me chills all the time. Her vocal performance in Hwaa, with the high note, amazing. Miyeon, I’ve noted is very very stable on stage. Her vocals always shine through and she also has a very strong vocal color.

Yuqi is probably my favorite vocalist of the group tho, despite the deep voice, she can go very high and so imo she has a wide vocal range. Idk how stable she is during performances but her vocals shine through in like acoustic sort of performances.

Soojin is also very good, didn’t really go in think she would be but her vocal performance in Hwaa was surprisingly quite strong. She also seems quite stable. Honestly could rival some groups lead vocalists.

Soyeon...phew I was particularly blown away by her, did NOT at all expect her to be so good at singing. Her performance in Hwaa was super super good. Also has a very unique vocal color and seems to be very very stable on stage.

Overall I think g idle are quite stable during performances and they seem to be very comfortably in their own ranges which I guess is thanks to Soyeon being the producer and knowing the voices of her members. I’m just saying this as a comparison because I used to be a big fan of twice at one point but they’re too out of their vocal ranges to be able to give strong vocal performances which makes it seem like they cannot sing.

Encore stages really highlight the vocal strengths of the members and g idle sing really really well during those. In general when comparing them to their competitors right now, I think g idle are very strong vocalists.

Who is the weakest SM main vocalist?

Who's the weakest SM main vocalist in terms of technique (this isn't about if you prefer their timbre or not, just purely technique)

SM is known for its great main vocalists, so being called the weakest main vocalist in SM is not a diss to the idol; they would still be probably a notch above most vocalists in the industry lol.

Also I'm expecting a few Ningning replies here, but I wouldn't include here in the ranking because we haven't heard much of her singing yet.

Whether you like his music or not, what is your honest opinion of him as a vocalist as compared to other singers?

Opinion post: Both Scenes and The Astonishing would have been greatly improved if they had guest vocalists

Hey, y'all. You guys may know me as either the guy that posts the occasional DT chart for Clone Hero or, alternatively, the guy that has been very vocal about his hatred for Scenes.

Anyways, let's get to the topic at hand. My disdain for Scenes partially comes from the fact that James has never been able to play multiple characters all that well. This continues to be true in The Astonishing.

While the Astonishing is a bit of an improvement in my eyes, I can admit that it has its own issues in addition to the characters all being done by James. I enjoy a good concept album, but when I think of some of the best that have multiple characters, my thoughts tend to go towards Ayreon, whom utilize multiple vocalists, or to King Diamond, whom actually has the voice to do the multitude of characters in his albums.

So, I think if they choose to do a third story driven concept album, they should bring in guest vocalists to help them out. I think the album would be better as a whole in the long run.

[Discussion Thread] Evergloam - The Dark Is So Familiar EP (Elder Scrolls lore based side project of Before I Turn vocalist)

Spotify

Youtube Music

Apple Music

I somehow missed the release on the 23rd of January (really thought it was February for some reason), and I'm so thrilled that it was like an early gift for me.

The whole EP is great, but I'm especially a fan of Dominion. Maybe as a fan of both Before I Turn and the Elder Scrolls games, I might be a little biased. However, this might be the best music released this year, and I will take no further questions.

But seriously, as a 6 song EP, I enjoy the whole thing and highly recommend a listen for anytime interested.
