I am(30f) a musician, playing gigs and at an orchestra as a violinist. Rehearsals just resumed so orchestra is my main source of income atm.
My sister(26f) is a social worker, working 3days a week so minimal income but she adores her job.
I live in a small 2 bedroom apartment (both rooms around 9-10sqr meters), using the second room as a practice room/storage for my instruments (3violins, 2 guitars, a digital piano, a small drum kit), and other stuff.
4 months ago my sister broke up with her bf and I offered her my spare room, temporarily. I moved most of my stuff to the living room so I could fit a small bed in there. Sis moved in, but she asked me to move more stuff to the living room. I moved pretty much everything sans the piano, to the point where the living room became uninhabitable.
Then she started complaining about my violin playing, saying it gave her headaches. I told her I couldn't stop the daily practice without risking my only steady income. The arguments got worse. She told me to play only when she wasn't home, but with her work schedule I couldn't afford that. I tried switching to the electric violin, but even that can be pretty loud so it didn't help.
Several times I reminded her this was only a temporary arragement, but she didn't seem to hear me.
Two weeks ago I arrived home to finding my piano in the bathroom (near water and humidity!), because my sis needed the space for her new double bed. When I told her she can't srsly expect me to store my piano there, she said "yeah, you will just have to sell it I guess". I got so mad I told her she has 7 days to leave, but she didn't take me seriously. For a week I only talked to her to remind her how much time she has left, but she always laughed it off, told me to "stop acting like a crazy person".
When the deadline came I boxed up all her stuff while she was at work, booked an rbnb bedsit close by and drove her stuff there. She was livid but couldn't do anything but take her new keys and stay there.
The following week she kept calling me with an increasingly apologetic tone, saying she shouldn't have moved my piano or bought a bed. She promised she would put more effort into finding a new place, and by the end of the week I considered most of our issues at least addressed, so I drove to help her move back.
But when I was carrying the first box down, she went "I do hope you will at least stop with the violin this time. I absolutely refuse to take more of that f***ing violin."... keep reading on reddit ➡
It splintered and broke into unfixable pieces and he laughed at me for crying. I loved my violin and was soo good at it and he took that joy away. 20 years later and I haven't been able to pick up one since. I found an old one at a thrift store last year and bought it. I am ready to play again but now I seem to not be able to read the music anymore and have absolutely no money for lessons. But I'm trying to get back into it!
Edit: Man I have never received such support and encouragement before in my life, you guys are amazing! I'm working toward replying to everyone but you have all been so helpful that I have so many responses but I promise I will get to you all!
Also thank everyone who gave me an award! :)
I've got my violin tuned and am going to search tutorials tonight!
I've been playing violin for over 8 years now, but lately I've been slipping. School has gotten in the way and I haven't been practicing as much as I would like. So, I need some motivation.
Edit 1: We just hit 60 upvotes which means 1 hour of violin. I'm still in school right now but when I get home I'll make sure to update you on how it goes.
Edit 2: Still not done with school but I am really surprised by the amount of support this got, y'all are amazing! I got an idea from a redditor in the comments and I think I'll cap the amount of minutes off after 40 hours of the original post time. I'll start practicing some of the minutes today and keep all of you updated. I'll also let you all know how I will spread it out depending on how much upvotes this gets.
Edit 3: I'm a man of my word. I just got back from school and now I'm going to set up my violin. (You know, rosin my bow and tune. That sort of thing.) Then I'll practice 1 hour for now. I'm not sure if I'll practice additional hours today or spread it out more across this week. I still have to decide on it. After an hour of practicing I'll write down what I did in another edit. Also, btw thanks for the rewards. That wasn't really necessary but I still appreciate it! I'll throw in another 20 minutes for those 2 awards. For those reading this in the future we are at 452 min or around 7.5 hours.
Edit 4: Hopefully y'all don't mind all these edits. If you have a better suggestion on like how to update all of y'all just let me know in the comments. First off, I'm so thankful for all of y'all support and kind words. I went straight to playing the violin and I felt so happy. I haven't played since last Saturday since I've had a lot of work. I loved playing so much again that I went on for 75 min. Then my pointer finger on my left hand started to hurt, too much vibrato I guess. Of course, you amazing people added another 248 upvotes while I was gone. So we are at like 700 min or 11.6 hours. I wasn't even able to catch up lol. Well I'm thinking of spreading the minutes of practice throughout the week. More or less than an hour a day? I didn't expect this much support and I have a lot more practicing to do! :D I've got a lot of homework though, so I'll finish all of that first and if I have extra time I'll do some more practice today.
Edit 5: We just hit 1k. Wow, thank y'all so much. You didn't have to, I mean you really didn't. (Imma cry thats 16.67 hours)
Final Edit: It's been... keep reading on reddit ➡
