Verisign won a US patent for blockchain-powered domain names. What are the implications?

It happened July 21, 2020. Have there been any implications since then? What might happen in the future because of this? Does it mean Verisign and therefore all the standard registrars can sell blockchain domains (if they do the work to integrate the technology)? Does it mean Verisign can stop blockchain registrars from operating?

Verisign sells off DNS to Neustar.

This landed in my mailbox today. Management has recommended shopping around. Anyone have a recommendation for external DNS host provider?

-=-

As you may have heard, it was recently announced that Verisign has entered into an Agreement to sell its Security Services business unit to Neustar, a critical infrastructure provider and a leader in the security services business. Additional information related to the transaction is available at https://www.home.neustar/about-us/news-room/press-releases/2018/VerisignSecurityServices

We’re excited about the transaction for the following reasons:

  • Security services and DNS are a critical component of Neustar’s core mission and essential to their long-term growth strategy.
  • Neustar continues to make significant investments into what is now one of the world’s leading dedicated DDoS scrubbing networks with:
    • 14 scrubbing centers strategically positioned across the globe
    • 10+ terabytes of network capacity
  • Neustar is the established market leader in cloud-based DNS services
  • Neustar has a broad security portfolio of products and services including WAF, BOTnet detection, IP reputation and Always-On
  • Neustar is well suited to deliver the most innovative solutions to Verisign’s enterprise customers, who will benefit from the continuous development and enhancement of security offerings that are closely aligned with their business needs

Please find the attached a copy of the consent letter that will enable this assignment to Neustar. We request the appropriate person returns a signed copy of the consent letter via email to me with a copy to [email protected]. Please note that a hard copy of this consent letter has been sent via Fedex, per the applicable notice requirements in your contract with Verisign. If you would prefer, we could also send this to you via e-signature. Please let us know who you would like us to send the assignment to if this is your preference.

We will remain in close contact throughout this transition. Should you have any immediate questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly or your Account Team here at Verisign at 703-948-4640 or [email protected]

Verisign partners with Armory to propose a new resource record in the DNS

Neat to see Verisign working with a bitcoin security startup. Here is the Verisign Blog link: http://blogs.verisigninc.com/blog/entry/what_s_in_a_name

"One of the innovative uses of DANE and DNSSEC is to offer a way for users to deliver payment instructions via the DNS. Verisign has worked with the team behind the Armory Bitcoin Secure Wallet (one of the most trusted open-source Bitcoin security providers of cold storage and multi-sig) to propose a new resource record in the DNS. Because this record is delivered via a secured chain of trust anchored in the DNS, users can rely on the authenticity of the payment instructions."

IETF Draft Proposal: https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-wiley-paymentassoc-00

Edit 1: Here is the DRAFT Armory-VeriSign Spec just posted by the Armory CEO. https://s3.amazonaws.com/bitcoinarmory-media/Armory+-+Wallet+Identity+Verification+Specification+v0.85.1.pdf

Edit 2: The draft spec made a lot more sense after reading Alan's post: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/30m1p6/verisign_partners_with_armory_to_propose_a_new/cpu318u

namecheap can't register boring domain because Verisign says there's a court order prohibiting it

Hey reddit-- I've registered dozens of domains over the years and never had anything like this happen. I'm working on my PhD and decided to do a little site to collect all of my research, so I went to Namecheap to register a very, very boring-sounding domain. The domain didn't activate, so I assumed I messed up the advanced dns settings some way. Namecheap looked into it, saw a serverhold and received this message back from Verisign:

> Thank you for contacting Verisign Support. The action taken on your domain name, blahblahboring.com, is the result of court order received by Verisign. Should you have any questions, please contact: Special Agent NAME, Federal Bureau of Investigation, [email protected], PHONE NUMBER.

This is the Whois status:

  • Domain Status: serverDeleteProhibited https://icann.org/epp#serverDeleteProhibited
  • Domain Status: serverHold https://icann.org/epp#serverHold
  • Domain Status: serverTransferProhibited https://icann.org/epp#serverTransferProhibited
  • Domain Status: serverUpdateProhibited https://icann.org/epp#serverUpdateProhibited

WTF?? Has anyone ever encountered anything like this? Is this for real? I'm totally baffled... Is there anything I can do? Now the domain shows up as not available when I look at it though other registrars.
