Why did the United Arab Republic and United Arab States fail?

The United Arab Republic was a union between Egypt and Syria that existed from 1958 to 1971, although Syria had left in 1961. The United Arab States was a confederation established between this state and Yemen, lasting from 1958-1961. Both were intended to be vehicles of pan-Arabism, but both failed. Considering that pan-Arabism has been (and continues to be) a driving force in Middle Eastern politics, why did a state that was intended to fulfil the dream of a united Arab world fail so quickly? Also, why isn't this talked about or studied in more detail than it is? It seems like it should be an important step in middle eastern history.

[EVENT] The Birth of the United Arab Republic.

>It seems that we have finally reached the point of no return, where Arabs finally start to meet without borders, without repression, without divisions. Today is when Algeria and Tunisia meet into one, but it will certainly not stop here. I believe that this is the first step of many in the great unification of the Arab world, an unification which I hope to be alive to see.

Khaleil Tarik fervently spoke on top of the podium, addressing the masses of Tunis, of which there was a massive mixture between Algerians and Tunisians, a never-seen before feat.

>I’m proud to see so many Arabs together at once to witness this historic event. It sincerely brings a tear to my eye. I wish legendary heroes of our Arabic world could be here to see this today, such as the one and only, Gamal Abdel Nasser, or Muammar Qaddafi. But we carry that legacy now, we carry the torch of Pan-Arabism and only us, the Arab people, can bring unification forward!

Khaleil soon stepped back from the podium, after being applauded and cheered on by hundreds of thousands of people, before going inside the Presidential Palace of Tunisia to meet with the Tunisian president and sign the treaty, which was:

Treaty on the formation of the United Arab Republic

  • Art. 1: The formal name of the Republic is the United Arab Republic (Ψ§Ω„Ψ¬Ω…Ω‡ΩˆΨ±ΩŠΨ© Ψ§Ω„ΨΉΨ±Ψ¨ΩŠΨ© Ψ§Ω„Ω…ΨͺΨΨ―Ψ©).

  • Art.2: The national flag of the United Arab Republic is a national flag based on the Arab Liberation Flag, with two stars representing the two countries of the union and the Shahada, an Islamic creed.

  • Art. 3: The United Arab Republic is a sovereign, Arab state whose sworn duty as a legitimate government is to protect the safety and well-being of Arabs all over the world.

  • Art. 4: The United Arab Republic is a confederation of Arab nations.

  • Art. 5: The official language of the United Arab Republic is Arabic.

  • Art. 6: Algiers is the de facto capital of the United Arab Republic.

  • Art. 7: The United Arab Republic is a pan-arabist Arab state.

  • Art. 8: The United Arab Republic recognizes and respects human rights as stipulated in the United Nations charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the covenants and conventions related to human rights, women’s rights and children’s rights. [EVENT] United Arab Republic - 2026 Elections.
  • It’s time for the first elections of the United Arab Republic after the merge between Algeria and Tunisia, the order of elections is the voting for the vice-presidents of the Arab Republics before going into the election for the president of the United Arab Republic.

  • The forecast is that it is very likely that current incumbent Khaleil Tarik will be moving into his third term as President, although it counts as his first term as president of the United Arab Republic.

  • It seems Zakyah Zerhouni, the Prime-Minister of Khaleil Tarik, will most likely take the post of Vice-President of the Arab Republic of Algeria while Salah Adoud is going to conquer the post of Vice-President of the Arab Republic of Tunisia.

  • Salah Adoud is a rising star in Tunisian politics by being a staunch supporter of Khaleil Tarik and his pan-arabist policies, which originated friction between the Tunisian party and the Algerian officials currently living in Tunisia. Many claim Salah is a puppet of Khaleil.

Vice-Presidential Elections of 2026

  • In the Arab Republic of Algeria, the candidates are Zakyah Zerhuoni, of the β€˜ National Liberation Front’, Mohammad Allouache of the β€˜Worker’s Party’, Suleiman Hannachi of the β€˜Algerian Popular Movement’ and Rashaad Amrouche of the β€˜El-Infitah Movement’.

  • The main criticisms against Zakyah as Vice-President was his commitment to Khaleil Tarik, which once again, many people saw as a puppet to the incumbent president. Statements were also made of his careerism and a few corruption claims.

  • In the end, the final results were:

Candidate Party Vote
Zakyah Zerhouni National Liberation Front 55.1%
Mohammad Allouache Worker’s Party 4.9%
Suleiman Hannachi Algerian Popular Movement 19.9%
Rashaad Amrouche El-Infitah Movement 20.1%

Presidential Elections of 2026

  • The elections started strong with Khaleil Tarik doing speeches all over both Arab Republics, especially in Tunisia which made some Algerians unhappy, although not severely.

  • Khaleil’s competitors were Nadir Fahas, the candidate for the β€˜National Rally for Democracy’ originated in Algeria, Bahir Gamouh of the β€˜Movement of National Understanding’ also originated in Algeria, Yazid Seghir of the β€˜Tunisian Ba’ath Movement’ and Faruq Zidane, of the β€˜Congress

[EVENT]Senate declares Republic of Matrouh and United Arab Republic Partnership

#The Matrouh Daily Tribune

12 January 2167

The Senate of the Republic of Matrouh has today unveiled new plans for a strategic partnership with the United Arab Republic that will see the Republic of Matrouh obtaining a 99 year lease on a portion of territory in northern Iraq. The new territory will be established as a transnational city and economic zone within the UAR, allowing it to manage its own laws and state governance while formally remaining territory of the UAR, but under administrative control of the Republic of Matrouh. In return for the land lease, the Republic of Matrouh is to approve significant funding for the region that will see massive creation of jobs for all those in central UAR. The Republic of Matrouh will also see a portion of the goods created diverted to the UAR, totalling 150 units per year upon the beginning of production. The name of this region has been decided upon as NEOM, constructed from two words. The first three letters form the Greek prefix neo- meaning β€œnew”. The fourth letter is from the abbreviation of β€œMostaqbal”, an Arabic word meaning β€œfuture.

Senator Ahmed Al-Qaddafi said on the deal that β€œit is a win-win for both states, Matrouhi businesses will now have an unprecedented opportunity to invest in the central UAR, providing goods for both states and creating many jobs for those throughout the region. This deal is indicative of the Republics commitment to its neighbour and key ally.”

With the creation of the NEOM, the Senate of the Republic of Matrouh has approved the creation of a large number of factories, drawing on reserves to complete the orders, expected to be operational in a number of months.

[DIPLOMACY] (Draft) Constitution of the United Arab Republic

Following initial discussions with the Syrian government on a union between both countries, Egyptian officials have prepared a new draft constitution:

>* The United Arab Republic is proclaimed, successor of the Republic of Egypt and the Syrian Arab Socialist Republic. The UAR inherits the territories and territorial claims of its predecessors, and all previous Egyptian/Syrian citizens become citizens of the UAR.

> * Any other Arab nation may join the UAR in union if so desired by the people.

>* Adoption of a new flag, coat of arms and anthem.

>* Arabic is the official language, Cairo the national capital of the UAR. No formal state religion is specified.

>* The President is the head of state and highest executive official of the UAR, and the commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The President appoints the Prime Minister as head of government and leader of the cabinet, as well as two Vice Presidents of whom one must be from Egypt and one from Syria.

>* The unicameral National Assembly is the highest legislative body of the UAR. It will have 600 seats, with 400 members from Egypt and 200 from Syria. The first National Assembly will be composed of members nominated by the preexisting national parliaments, later elections shall be held.

>* The judicial systems of Egypt and Syria are to be consolidated into the judiciary of the UAR. Its independence is guaranteed by the constitution.

>* The UAR is at its core a unitary state, which can devolve power to its sub-national administrative units. Egypt and Syria are to become regions with a degree of autonomy over internal affairs. Each of the regions is divided into governorates.

>* Universal suffrage is implemented for all elections.

>* Creation of political parties and organisations requires government approval.

>* Private ownership is protected in cases where national and public interests don't prevail. Feudalism is prohibited. Natural wealth and resources are property of the state.

If this draft is supported by the Syrians, it shal

[EXPANSION] The United Libyan Arab Republic!

A few months ago, AMCO has announced that they will begin extracting oil from Southern Libya. They have managed to secure much of the southeast and installed their extraction equipment to prepare for drilling. Unfortunately, the mass industrialization campaign initiated by the Libyan Arab Government requires an enormous amount of power and fuel, forcing the LAR to import fuel from the UAR.

AMCO seeing the potential for enormous profits has therefore invested heavily in prospecting for oil in Western Libya, hoping to find more fuel to fuel the economy (and their pockets). The native Libyan population, much like their eastern Libyan counterparts received the members of the AMCO expedition with open arms, agreeing to join the Libyan Arab Republic and allowing AMCO to extract oil in exchange for a share of the profits. Speaking the same language, having the same culture, and practicing the same religion has allowed the Libyans to accept the growing presence of AMCO, its employees, and Libyans from other parts of Libya.

Back in the heartland of the United Arab Republic, this expansion in AMCO's capabilities in such a brief period of time is being hailed as a testament to the UAR's technological prowess and know-how when it comes to the extraction of fuel.

Long live the Libyan Arab Republic! Long live the United Arab Republic! Long live President Aflaq!

Abstract

Official Language: Levantine Arabic

Official Religions: Islam, Christianity, Judaism

Capital: Al Quds/Jerusalem

The events following the great flood and nuclear Armageddon have been chaotic for the middle east. First, there was the great Israeli genocide which saw millions of people flee their homes as the Palestinians finally rose up against their oppressors, next the Palestinian state collapsed after constant war with Orthodox nations to the West. A Crusader kingdom, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, was propped up in Palestine. The crusader state eventually collapsed upon itself, succumbing to both internal issues and an invasion from neighboring Egypt. Egypt then allowed for the creation of a new United Arab Republic in the Levant. Unfortunately, political issues between the elected party in the Levant, the Baath Party, and the ruling Nasserist Party in Egypt have prevented a union from taking place. Nonetheless, the United Arab Republic led by President Aflaq has promised to stay true to the principles of Pan-Arabism and to work towards a free united independent Arab State.

Meanwhile, a second major political party has emerged in the Republic and gained significant traction. The SSNP has made great strides in recent years as their dream of creating a Greater Syria is shared by Pan-Arabists and Syrian nationalists alike. Only time will tell how the political scene in the Republic will evolve.

The United Arab Republic, with a capital currently in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) controls all of Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, and Southern Syria (Damascus) with ambitions to unite the Arabs across the Suez Canal as well as expand towards Iraq.

For those who are unaware, the United Arab Republic was the unification between Syria and Egypt formed in 1958 and was dissolved in 1961 after a coup in Syria. How would this alliance effect the events in these two countries, all the way up to the modern era?

Why do so many of you feel so optimistic about an "United Arab Republic"?

I am a Diplomat for Palestine based at the UN in New York, and I couldnt help but see how we are moving further and further away from a UAR.

The Arabs are most divided now. The only issue that remotely resembles Arab unity is the issue of Palestine, and its not perfect either.

Just curious were a lot of you are getting this idealist optimism.

[EVENT] United Arab Republic Reacts to Death of Emirs

On March 9th 2031, the Great Council of Emirs for the United Arab Republic was attacked by separatist forces, upset with the Presidents recent pledge of loyalty to the KSA. These forces attacked the council when they were in session inside the Emir of Abu Dhabi's palace. Despite their palace guards and local police fighting back, three Emirs were killed. The Emir of Dubai,Emir Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was killed while trying to fight off the separatists. The Emirs of Abu Dhabi and Fujairah were killed as they fled the palace, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, respectively. The remaining Emirs escaped the palace in an armored vehicle that Al Maktoum kept in his garage. National guard forces moved in and were met with fierce gunfire and heavy resistance from the forces inside the palace. After a 7 hours standoff for the release of the Al Maktoums wife, the forces escaped through the sewer main and disappeared before police had a chance to apprehend them. A nation wide manhunt is taking place in an attempt to locate the men who carried out the attack. All international flights have been cancelled, the local army mobilized, and the borders closed. After the government caught wind of these attacks the president, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, called Al Saud in the KSA and told him that he would do everything in his power to keep the Royal house protected. Simultaneously the leader of the National Socialist Workers Front, third most leading party in congress, Admiral Gial Ackbar announced that he supported the attacks and would do everything in his power to support the continuation of the separatist power from the KSA.

What if the United Arab Republic worked?

In 1958 Egypt and Syria united to form the United Arab Republic, with the goal of a unified Pan-Arab state. This attempt failed horribly and Syria became independent in 1961 after a coup.

But what if this attempt worked? Syria and Egypt successfully start a Pan-Arab stable union, encouraging any other Arab state to join.

Which countries would have been likely to join this union and how powerful would it have been? What would it mean for the future of the middle east in terms of the future of Israel, the Arab Spring, the rise of ISIS, and so on?

[EVENT] Creation of the United Arab Republic

[M] I posted an offer to the presumably inactive Syrian player (who hasn't posted anything for weeks), and got no reply from the player or mods. If this isn't allowed I guess it can be invalidated, but since the government is dominated by Nasserists, Syria was extremely pan-Arab, and the United Arab Republic actually existed around this time, with no other input, I'd say it's safe to assume I can go ahead unless told otherwise.

Also, I'll need a new flair with this flag.

In 1967, Nasser's dream of a united Arab nation, free of foreign domination, had finally begun to be realised. With the war over, the long-held promises of a political union between Egypt and Syria could finally be realised. The treaty of union between the Egyptian and Syrian governments had finally been signed, bringing about the founding of the the new nation. This is a new dawn for the Arab people, Nasser announced in one of his first public speeches since the end of the war. Starting immediately, Egypt and Syria will be part of the same nation, and the two governments will slowly work to intertwine our two nations into one. The start of a new age in the middle-east is here!

[DIPLOMACY] Israel offers to sign new treaty with the United Arab Republic

The fracturing and massive changes in government have lead the Israelis to believe that the treaty previously signed with the UAR is invalid due to the change in government of both nations.

In order to continue the increasingly positive relations with the United Arab Republic, we offer to sign a new treaty, hoping to normalize relations and provide security for both nations from their neighbours (each other included). The Israeli offer of a treaty follows:

  1. Israel is to recognise the lands of Egypt, Somaliland, Sudan and Western Africa as both the lands of the UAR and as being under the control of the Egyptian government.

  2. Israel asks that a referendum be held within the Lebanon, in order to ascertain that population's willingness and desire to remain a part of the United Arab Republic. Their isolated nature both religiously, ethnically and geographically does not lend them to being a part of the United Arab Republic and Israel believes their right to self-determination remains regardless of the time frame that they have been within the United Arab Republic. We are willing to negotiate in this regard.

  3. The United Arab Republic and her subsequent individual states are to recognize the lands of the State of Israel as being Israel's and only Israel's. This includes the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

  4. A year-long non-aggression pact, with the large possibility of an extension is offered between the two nations.

  5. Egypt's concerns of human rights violations within the Gaza Strip are to be alleviated by allowing members of the Red Crescent organisation from Egypt into Gaza with humanitarian aid, as un-needed as it is. These trucks are to be searched by the Israeli government before entering.

We hope this treaty will provide a neccessary boost to positive relations between the UAR and the State of Israel.

Signed, Daniel Dekel, Prime Minister of Israel.
