Fun Fact: The P verses NP problem can be summed up thus: "If the solution to a problem is easy to check for correctness, must the problem be easy to solve?" It is yet unsolved, though solving it and having your answer verified will net you a million dollars in prize money by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Either answer to the question will have implications on how one view's things: if an easily verifiable is not automatically an easily solvable problem, then research can be made more efficient by not focusing on completely answering problems from the get-go and instead focusing on how to solve problems partially (at first) and answering other problems before worrying about the full answer. If, however, it's true that an easily verifiable problem can automatically mean an easily solvable problem, it would mean that many once hard-to-solve computations can soo

Fun Fact: The Coca-Cola company once did an ad for Coke Zero in which people with Facebook accounts could have themselves matched with others who looked just like them, for the (admittedly not that strong) reason that Coke Zero is a lot like regular Coke. Note that this is not a recent thing thing: it happened in late 2009, more than a decade ago.
Optional Discussion Thread: Do you use social media (other than Reddit, of course!)? If you do, how's it going? If you don't, why?
Just as a warning: Be sure to meet people from the internet in a very public place. Verify that they are legitimate enough to meet with safely, otherwise do it at your own risk.
Are you looking to meet any ploungers in the real world? Well come on in! Chat with people, see if other users are near you, meet them in person and personally connect with them! This isn't for any specific meetup, I just want to make a chat to encourage meeting other users, because I will be meeting /u/bloons3 in a Dallas pony con.
Also, use this to look for ploungers near you, but make sure to offset your exact location.
What are your favorite books?
Whats your favorite Author?
Favorite Genre?
Do you prefer funny books or horror books?
Or serious books?
What about stories? Do you like long interesting and thought provoking stories?
Or do you like simple short humerus stories?
Fiction or non fiction?
Do you read to learn?
Or to enjoy?
I peronally like books that spin a long thought provoking tale that also teaches you lessons. But I also enjoy humor in my books. I guess I would prefer science fiction and fantasy to non fiction, but I do enjoy me some great history books! I think my favorite author has to be Michael Crichton. The writer of Jurassic Park (awesome book btw 10/10) and Andromeda Strain.
Here's the simple overview page that you've seen if you took the poll.
However, things are not so simple. Firstly, I had a bit of cleanup to do. There were a few joke entries, but not that many. It turns out that a lot of you are actually horses who are attracted to horses. Strangely, none of you are ponies and only 2 of you are attracted to ponies. This surely merits further research.
Secondly, did you notice how there are a lot more women than you'd think? Well, that's easily explained by the fact that over half of them are fake. After hours and hours of fewer than 1 in 10 respondents identifying as women, 37 women suddenly appeared out of nowhere and all responded within a 3 minute period. They then vanished back into the ether and reverted to showing up once for every 11 men or so.
After cleanup, here are my totals:

Male: 366

Hello everyone! I love reading and this fandom has produced some magnificent literature. For me, a crux of my love for both the show and fandom has been amazing fanfics over the years. I remember back in early summer of 2011 reading fanfics and being blown away at the quality the fandom could produce, so it holds a deep nostalgia for me and I'm always looking for that next big story to immerse myself into.
I'm totally open to random fanfic discussion and suggestions. I hope many of you will partake in this with me. Without further ado let me begin the thread by mentioning some of my favorites:
Good day, Plounge! The Random Number Gods have smiled upon me and I have been selected to be the Plounge Member of the Day. If you would like to be considered for this honor, an offering to said gods may be made in this thread.
To get everything started, /u/shellbullet17 graciously provided a few template questions to give you all an idea of just who they pulled out of that indistinct mass that is the Plounge lurkers. My answers are as follows:
First name: Ryan. I've learned over the past few months that this is an incredibly common name (and now I'm starting to wonder just where all these Ryans had been for so long), but I like it, near-ubiquity or not.
Age Sex and/or Gender: One of those things is not like the others. In any case: 18, β.

You may know me as the Rome fanatic. It is true, I am in love with that time period. but, I am seeking to gain new knowledge. I am going to start studying the Medieval Era after I learn more about ancient China. I have come to realize, that this era is rich with all sorts of diplomacy, Kingdoms rising and falling, religious conflict such as the Crusades and multiple Jihads. And multiple European nations fighting for the title of Rome. and that interests the fuck out of me greatly.
So, enough abut what I am going to do, what types of things do you like to study, plounge?
Does anybody else like to go to the library occasionally?
For the past few years I've lived in two places that were both within walking distance of a library. I'm not much of a reader but I sometimes would go there and read parts of random books. It's also fun just to wander around looking at the titles of books on the shelves, open one up to a random page and read a paragraph to see what it's like, then put it back and repeat.
Simple as that. I haven't subscribed to anything new in a long time, and I've just chopped some subs that I no longer have an interest in.
So I propose a thread wherein we can share our favourite subs and hopefully introduce each other to some new things.
That said, I'm not so good myself at making the subs I'm subscribed to sound enticing, so I'll just give a little summary of some of them:
Being a car person, I subscribe to /r/autos and /r/cars. I'm also an F1 fan, for /r/FormulaOne and /r/F1Porn are relevant to me.
I'm British. Therefore, /r/britishproblems is a must. Also a Doctor Who fan, so I ignore the main /r/DoctorWho sub because it sucks and go straight to /r/gallifrey for some good conversation instead of pictures of TARDIS cakes. Also a pony lover, so /r/gallopfrey is relevant, though it sees very little traffic nowadays. Likewise /r/Torchwood, though I guess that goes without saying given the lack of a TV series over the past

I have a question for you horsefuckers! Now, I love to write, in fact, I write horsewords every so often. And, speaking about horsewords (and words in general), I also love to read the shit out of stuff - Which comes to the question: What are your favorite horseword stories? Or, if you don't worship read fan fiction, what are your favorite stories in general? What books/tales do you like that seem unappreciated?
So, e-books, right? You've got them on your Nooks and your Kindles and your pad devices, but those are always becoming obsolete as newer models come out, and even then you've got to worry about battery life, adjusting the screen brightness, and a whole bunch of other stuff.
Now, instead of putting e-books on e-devices... why don't we put them on Ouija boards? No battery life or glare to worry about, just two blocks of wood. You can carry it wherever you want and read books on the go, one letter at a time!
You might be wondering how to get digital books into spirit form, but it's really not that hard. Just fill up a USB drive with e-books, burn it, and now you've got a whole selection of ghost books to read.
So, good idea or great idea?
I want you to recommend a must read book for me. I am adding shit to my kindle and I want some recommendations.
I will share some of my Kindle library with you:
Complete works of HP Lovecraft/the Cthulhu Mythos Mega pack
Percy Jackson series (Lightning Thief - The Last Olympian)
Heroes of Olympus (Percy Jackson sequel series, The Lost Hero - The blood of Olympus)
World War Z
George Orwell's 1984
The Dune series
Fallout Equestria (Any one know if Project Horizons is done yet?)
The Communist Manifesto (I suggest giving this a look through. Cool stuff.)
And the Starship Troopers book.
So yeah, anything within those lines would be great. I'll take anything (if I can find a PDF for it).
I should get the Kane Chronicles on here...
I'm sure a few of you are literate, what's your favorite novel? Favorite poem? Story? Favorite written work, basically.
Last read? Current book? Work you really want to read but haven't had the chance? Who am I? I don't know.
Currently I'm in the process of hacking away at War and Peace, with a side of Faust and Fungi From Yuggoth to pass the time. Finished reading Dracula recently. All damn fine word-stuff. A little too much prose I suppose, my mind is starting to think in(really weak) rhymes sometimes.
I'm one of those weird people who find actual books dull and boring. Don't get me wrong, I love reading, just not original stories. I often have a hard time getting into them and invested. I don't think I've read a book for fun in quite some time. And don't get me started on the books I have to read for class.
But for the past few days all I have been reading is fan fiction. I can't put it down (which I'm sure is driving /u/Xcelian crazy), but I'm just having so much fun. The plots are interesting, I already know I love the characters, and though I have mix feelings about this the intimate moments are often a lot of fun to read (I'm not reading MLP fan ficiton, just fan fiction in general).
Which got me thinking, is fan fiction the same as reading a book? I mean I'm still reading, I'm still learning new (sometimes disturbing) things, and I'm having a blast doing it. However, fan fiction has a well deserved prejudice against it. Often it's too sexual,

So after having trouble falling asleep I decided to finally reactivate my facebook account using the iPhone app at 1:00 am. But I've been away from it for so long that I'm basically starting fresh. So what do I post on there? I've added most of the information in the "personal" section already. Updated my profile picture.
Status updates, interests, groups... I feel like I'm playing a complicated RPG without a tutorial.
I know some people like to use music and others prefer silence, but I honestly do better with TV. The problem is that my go to tv shows I've seen a thousand times and can't bear to watch them again. And the shows I do want to watch are in a language that I barely understand so I need to actually pay attention.
So, Plounge, got any suggestions? It needs to be something light and humorous. Something I can have in the background but still have a grasp of what is going on.

Now obviously Twilight lives in Equestria which would have different literature than what we would have access to here on Earth. But for the sake of the question let's just assume that every book that has ever been printed here on Earth has some sort of equivalent in Equestria.
So, what are Twilight's favorite books? Based on her personality and personal interests, which books has she obviously taken to heart? 1) Her interest in friendship makes me believe that she is an avid reader of "pop psychology" books, seeing as the whole intent of that genre is to understand how humans (...ponies...) interact with one another. Maybe something along the lines of Malcolm Gladwell's work, or "Freakanomics". 2) She has also shown an interest in the canonical "Daring Do" series. Draconius Go has done a great job implementing suggestions and improving the formula introduced by its predecessor. Arenas are limited to 25 per player to limit overcrowding in high population areas. Libraries implement retraining but include a timed lockout. Obelisks bring quests and golden egg maps but those are daily or weekly.
So I'm not particularly accomplished at this point, mid silver league. I've still had time to notice something about all these features. You can run out. Capture 25 arenas and now all other arenas are useless. Complete a library research and you have a few days off from that. Get your egg map and your daily and all obelisks are useless. At best this is very fun and there are many points of interest. At worst it all devolves to the old walking eggs and spinning

The Bands of Mourning is a sequel to Shadows of Self.
So, today I got a package, I was so excited because I really wanted to start reading them as soon as possible. I like books. Turns out, it's only one book: The Bands of Mourning (the sequel). So I still can't read them.
Right afterwards I was told my grandfather had a stroke and is in ICU.
He's 93, and sharp, if a bit stuck in his ways. He listens to the radio and is constantly updated with current happenings and news.
After the stroke... My father stayed with him all day. He told us that my grandfather tried to clean his glasses with a piece of bread. After cleaning himself in the bathroom, he tried to wear the towel as pants, and I don't mean wrapping it around his waist, I mean trying to put his leg inside a "sleeve". He did this on two separate occasions.

Hey plounge, I've been on the fence on buying some cool technical books for a while.
You know the humble book bundle going on right now? These ones?
The majority (if not all) of those books look great to me, so I want to buy them. It's a fantastic deal for all of them. But I'm also stingy with money, and things have been kinda tight lately with buying "midnight food" (I don't have a kitchen or food storage area, so I have to go out and buy things often).
Additionally, I don't have time to read any of them until a school break in May. Not a chance otherwise.
However, I do have an on the side min. wage job, and funds will get better when winter break comes around.
Plounge, what should I do? Got any advice?
I have to admit expectations were mixed when I picked up Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV during the recent Steam summer sale. I had heard mostly good things in the past, but also a few significant complaints, so hopes weren't especially high as I started up the game. But I've had several days now to explore the streets of Liberty City, and on the whole I'm fairly happy to be here. While not perfect, GTA IV is a solid, if occasionally flawed entry into the dating sim genre.
The best thing about GTA IV is the fresh and creative approach it brings to the often stale world of dating games. For starters, the decision to couch the game's main mechanics in an open-world third-person action game is both clever and skillfully executed. The flavor these additional mechanics add goes a long way toward holding interest when the main game starts to get same-y or boring, and the side-systems and missions are so immersive that at times I almost found myself imagining they were the mai

Also a reminder:
I'm open to suggestions, if you have a topic you want for future episodes Today's story takes us back to Imperial China and their dealings with Imperial Britain...and it would still be more than 120 years before Imperial margarine.
The Brits love their tea. They're not shy or secretive about it... they love their tea, and they're going to get fighting mad at anyone who would impede their ability to get tea. Unfortunately for them, China during the Qing Dynasty were the only ones who had the capacity to meet Britain's needs.
