Your favourite transition words, synonyms, or phrases in academic writing?

Hey! What are your favourite transition words? I’m a second year undergrad and I’ve maintained an average of 93% in all writing assignments (since high school).

I feel like I’m constantly using the same transition words - the basic ones: albeit, however, nevertheless, additionally, furthermore, moreover, etc.

Most of the time, I follow the advice of one of my profs, “try to never use a word more than once.” Which clearly is impossible, except it has significantly improved my post-secondary writing.

Also, sorry, I know this isn’t explicitly a Poli Sci question!! I also felt super pressured while writing this... but hey, this isn’t for marks, right?😳😉

An Anki deck for Minna No Nihongo 1-1 and 1-2

Full disclosure: I am the author of the deck.

The deck is available at: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1847451780 .

I think that it might be useful for other beginners for studying through Minna No Nihongo 1-1 and 1-2.

From the description there: > Includes all nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs (and adverbial expressions) and phrases given in Minna No Nihongo 1-1 and 1-2. (Only words explained in the Translation and Grammar books).

> Two types of cards: Recognition and Recall. In Recognition, you are given the word (with furigana) and you have to identify the meaning and other information. In Recall, you are given the meaning and you have to identify the word.

> There are several different card types. The common fields are Expression (either a phrase or a word), Reading (same as expression but with furigana), Meaning, Chapter Number and Comment. The comment usually contains information about similar words, homophones and/or alternate meaning(s). The additional fields include:

> * Adjective: Usage, Synonym(s), Antonym(s)

  • Adverb: Word, Translation
  • Verb: Usage, Group (I, II or III), Transitivity,Synonym(s), Antonym(s)

> Remark 1: Since the JP plugin was used to create the deck, I think that using it/viewing it correctly will probably require it.

> Remark 2: In the Adverb cards, the semantics of the fields are a bit different. In all other cases, the "Expression" field means the word/phrase in question but in case of Adverbs, this is replaced by the "Word" field and "Expression" refers to an example sentence or phrase, i.e., an expression utilising the adverb.

> Remark 3: Some cards now also include references to words from lessons 25+ (MNN 2-1). This is because I have started working on the corresponding MNN 2-1 deck but I haven't finished it.

> If you find any errors or have any comments or suggestions for improvement, please send me an email: "theindigamer15 [at] gmail [dot] com".

The "transitional deal" that Philip Hammond called for is a synonym for EEA/EFTA membership

Hearing our politicians interminably giving us their thoughts on Brexit, Booker writes, recalls those lines in Hamlet where Horatio speaks of the time, just before "the mighty Julius fell", when the "unsheeted dead did squeak and gibber in the Roman streets".

In his column headed: "Only one safe way out of the EU labyrinth", he tells us that, as our MPs and peers squeak and gibber in the streets and halls of Westminster, they merely parade their near-complete ignorance of how the EU works, and of everything a sensible exit from it would involve.

It is generally agreed, for instance, that, once we leave the EU, we need to continue trading with it without massive disruption. But scarcely any of them seem to know the difference between the EU’s "single market"; its "customs union"; its system of "customs co-operation"; or its "common commercial policy".

Yet, says Booker, without being aware of the crucial distinctions between each of these policies, they are doomed to circle round in a fog of total incomprehension.

The latest buzzword, as it dawns on some that extricating ourselves from the EU will be incredibly complicated, is that we may need a "transitional" arrangement, before we establish our final new relationship with it. And here we did at least hear some vaguely sensible words from Philip Hammond and David Davis last week.

As Davis put it, when questioned by an uncomprehending Commons committee, you can't have a "transitional" arrangement unless you know what it is you are transitioning to. Before you build the bridge, he pointed out, you need to have some idea of what is at the other end of it.

In fact, there is only one conceivable way to achieve the "smooth" transition that ministers speak of, avoiding the wholly unworkable alternatives proposed by the "hard Brexiteers": a one-off "free-trade deal", which would take far too long to negotiate, or reliance just on those fabled "WTO rules", which would plunge our trade into chaos. That is by rejoining the Efta, which we ourselves set up in 1959, so that we remain in the wider EEA.

This alone could enable us (a) to leave the EU and its "customs union"; (b) to continue trading "within the single market", as Theresa May insists we must, with full "customs co-operation"; (c) to escape from its "common commercial policy", which prevents us from striking our own trade deals with the outside world; and (d), under the EEA agreement, to regain some control of immigration from within the EU.

[Review] Chanel 19- 30cm Xiao C Factory from nTS Ivy

I had to do a review on this one because once again, Xiao C just gets it right. Another mic drop? Yes! Definitely! They are on point with their 19 bags. I am so impressed with the leather and the details. This is the 30cm size or what Chanel calls the large size. This is Xiao C’s “classic” leather and now available also is their upgraded leather where it’s more glossy. I personally prefer the “classic” leather only because it’s exact to my authentic lambskin where it has a slight iridescent sheen to it. But the upgraded leather is gorgeous with that glossy shine also. Again, personal preference and can’t go wrong with either. Don’t ask me which one is more like the authentic. Both leathers are like the authentic.

Again, take my review rating scale with a grain of salt. I only have the authentic 26cm to compare to.

Constructive criticism or CCW welcomed!

Uh oh, time to talk about fascism

So there's been a lot of people throwing around the F word recently. And it's starting to look like a bit of a parody of what the right says about the left calling everything they disagree with fascist.

There's a phase a lot of baby leftists go through, when they start to understand how bad everything really is, to just kind of call everything Fascist. Because they've been taught that word means like "biggest bad," instead of anything more specific.

In reality, Liberal Democracies, Monarchies, Empires, etc, they all had ethnocentric campaigns of mass murder, extermination/concentration camps, genocide, etc etc. So those things alone aren't Fascism. Rather, what you're discovering if this is new to you, is that Liberalism is actually really really bad all on its own, and isn't nearly as far away from Fascism as it likes to pretend it is.

So I felt a clarification was needed to calm things down a bit, and to explain what we mean when we say the Imperium is Fascist.

Oh God, I'm sorry. This ended up being really long, I'll break it up with some fun memes, but here we go:

#Part 1, WTF is Fascism, even?

No don't run away, I know this topic is dead as hell. Just a quick run through.

So this is such a difficult task that some of the smartest people in academia haven't been able to do it, so obviously we can't here.

The difficulty stems from the fact that Fascism is both highly specific, and yet still completely incoherent. Further, being a reactionary movement, it will be different every single time it arises, even if it's in the same country.

Like trying to describe the exact shape of a lava lamp, the second you go to do it, it will be different again every time it's turned on. You can describe what a lava lamp is like, but how can you tell it's the same configuration? (Fun fact, lava lamps are so unpredictable, they're used to generate random numbers.)

All of this confusion is compounded by the fact that liberal hegemony won the culture war, and therefore shaped the dominant narrative about what Fascism is, making it lost in all the idealistic gobbledygook Liberalism always drags along with it. (Totalitarianism, muh 1984, etc.) And no, none of us are free from this. It's just the cultural water we swim in.

To this end, a lot of people try to use Umberto Eco's 14 Points. But he wasn't writing a checklist, he was trying to describe what Fascism felt like. Which is useful historically, but not ge

Kevin Shields on My Bloody Valentine’s Return: Time Is ‘More Precious’ (New York Times piece)

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/31/arts/music/my-bloody-valentine-shields.html

TL;DR: working on two new albums, one more melodic, one “warm and melodic,” one more experimental, both should be done by the end of the year.

Are we allowed to post articles from behind a paywall? If so, let me know and I can copy + paste for anyone who can't access this.

EDIT: just gonna post the piece in whole. Read below.

For nearly four decades, Kevin Shields, the leader of the very loud, very fuzzy rock band My Bloody Valentine, has been described using synonyms for “eccentric” and “reclusive.” But the truth is more … what’s another word for mundane? He cooks with his wife, Anna, and they have two dogs. He listens to music on Spotify, and loves Frank Ocean. He practices Wing Chun. He likes to go for walks on his sprawling property in Ireland, where he’s learned a few things about the local deer population.

“The more overconfident ones have this thing where they like to stand within 10 feet of the dogs, and make these kind of high-pitched noises like, ‘What are you going to do about it?’” he said in a recent interview.

Shields didn’t appear on camera, and the band hasn’t taken new photos since the 1990s, but he was having this conversation to make a conventional announcement: My Bloody Valentine is making the majority of its catalog available for streaming, and reissuing it on vinyl. The group has signed with the influential independent label Domino, and plans to release two new records.

“Our original plan was we would record both the albums back-to-back and then go tour on that,” he said. “And that would have been this year, you know, but everything really did slow down.”

The news, however, is still remarkable, because My Bloody Valentine has truly always done things its own way. Sometimes, that has meant calling up vinyl factories in different countries to see which manufactures the best and most specific sound. Other times, it has meant letting its label sue Shields rather than release music it didn’t like. (That happened in 2001, after My Bloody Valentine had been signed with Island Records for nearly a decade without turning out a new album.)

My Bloody Valentine is most famous for elevating “[shoegaze](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/14/arts/music/s

[Writing Tips] A Quick Guide For First-Year Students

Dear First-Year Students of all faculties (yes, even the ghouls),

Having completed my degree, I now see that high school teachers provided students with useful academic insight pertaining to their transition to university...but they also provided these students with horrible advice—especially in academic writing.

So, knowing that many of you will be taking ENGL requirements and/or writing-intensive courses in your first year, I figured I would provide you with writing tips so that you may at the very least slide by with a sufficient grade (it really comes down to the quality of your writing and content).

....................

Disclaimer: This guide is also directed towards PoliSci students however, because they are the superior creed, as well as the future prime ministers and presidents of humanity, they may choose whether or not they wish to read and abide by this guide. The rest of you plebeians ought to follow this without question.

....................

The Golden Rules

Hold two slices of bread against your ears and repeat after me:

  • “I will not use Wikipedia in either the research or writing process, lest I be turned into a snail by the writing fairies.”
  • ”If I end up using Wikipedia, I will neither blame my professor for the horrible grade I receive, nor will I suggest that the professor should have explicitly warned against the use of Wikipedia.”

Be Concise

  • Get to the point
    • But on the other hand however, it can be contrarily argued...
    • Conversely,...
  • Throw out your thesaurus and stop googling “synonyms for [insert word]”
    • The conventional societal norms are not being apprehended by the relatively pluralistic socially-constructed international political-industrial complex.
    • State actors are not following basic norms in the international system.

Don’t Overuse Quotations

Quotations should be used sparingly. Enough said.

General Structure

Unless otherwise stated, follow this general structure:

  • Title Page
    • Title
    • Sub-title
    • Institution
    • Name
    • Student ID
    • Professor
    • Course
    • Due date
  • Introduction
    • Tell us about the issue at hand
    • Tell us what you think and why (THIS IS YOUR THESIS)
    • Tell us what you will be doing in this paper, and how you will go about doing it (THIS IS YOUR PAPER OUTLINE)

Ways to say: to die

In English there are a ton of ways to say "to die" (perish, kick the bucket, croak, expire, be no more, give up the ghost, etc.) The same is true in French. Here are a few of the most popular ways.

Verbs

mourir: similar to "to die", the most direct neutral option, very common

  • Aucune femme ne devrait mourir en donnant la vie. → No woman should die giving life.

Note that "mourir" (and its opposite, naître, to be born) are among the 14 intransitive verbs of movement that use "être" for the passé composé form:

  • Mon mari est mort la veille de Noël. → My husband died on Christmas Eve.

crever: very common, informal/familiar register. Similar to "croak" but not as vulgar/rude.

  • J'ai pas envie de crever pauvre. → I don't want to die poor.

  • Plutôt crever que de te le dire. → I'd rather die than tell you.

Often "crever" is used in a figurative sense for emphasis, similar to English:

  • Je crève de soif/faim/chaud/froid/peur. → I'm dying of thirst. I'm starving. I'm burning up. I'm freezing to death. I'm scared to death.

  • Elle crève d'envie de te voir. → She's dying to see you.

  • J'aime ce mec à en crever. → I love that man to death.

As a transitive verb it can also mean "to kill":

  • Je peux pas crever le mec qui m'a sauvé la vie. → I can't kill the guy who saved my life.

Other meanings: The noun form "la crève" refers to a cold or flu. "crever" can also mean to "burst" or "puncture" (crever un ballon). And there's also "être crevé" which means "to be tired":

  • Je suis crevé et pas d'humeur à discuter. → I'm tired and not in the mood for a chat.

décéder: a more formal term mainly used in writing (the English equivalent is the obsolete verb "decease" which also means "die"; also similar to "pass away")

  • Cette année, onze millions de personnes vont décéder de maladies curables. → This year, eleven million people will die of preventable diseases.

périr: formal, same as English "perish"

  • Les nations doivent désarmer ou périr. → The nations must disarm or perish.

  • Si je péris, vous périssez avec moi ! → If I perish, you perish with me !

clamser: similar to crever but even more informal (registre populaire), like "croak" or "kick the bucket" (to help you remember here is a frog in a clam)

  • Dis, tu vas clamser d'une minute à l'autre ? → Hey, you're gonna croak any day now, right?

expirer: formal, same as English "expire" (in all

Squad Space and Homegrown Players - an analysis

I've seen a lot of misinformation flying around homegrown players as the Konate hype train picks up steam, so I wanted to make this post and clear things up as we go into the summer.

1. The rules

Our primary concern with squad space are UEFA's rules on homegrown talent. The Premier League has less restrictive rules, but we're still likely to have European football next season, so if a squad clears UEFA's rules, it will also clear the Prem.

First, people will say that you need to have 8 homegrown players in the squad. This is misleading. Of the 25 squad slots, eight are reserved for homegrown players, but they can be left empty. You can register a squad of 17 Brazilians and no-one else. With that in mind, and for our purposes, here are the definitions:

  • A player's formative years are the seasons between his ages of 15 and 21, rounded to the next completed season. A player enters his formative years on 1 July of the season during which he will turn 16, and leaves them on 30 June of the season during which he has turned 21.
  • A home-grown player is one that spent three of his six formative seasons with a club in the English FA.
  • A club-grown player is one that spent three of his six formative seasons with Liverpool FC.
  • A youth player is a player who will not turn 23 in the relevant calendar year, and has been with LFC for at least two years (this is to stop you raiding European clubs for teenagers)

And the rules, translated from legalese in articles 44 and 45:

  • At most 17 players can be non-home-grown
  • At most 21 players can be non-club-grown
  • Youth players don't count

With that in mind, let's look at our current squad. Players marked with (C) are club-grown, players marked with (H) are home-grown but not club-grown. Jones and Neco Williams are the only ones that count as youth players,

Alisson, Adrian, Kelleher (C), VvD, Gomez (C), Kabak, Tsimikas, Robertson, Davies (H), Matip, Phillips (H), TAA (C), Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Thiago, Milner (H), Keita, Henderson (H), Oxlade (H), Firmino, Mane, Salah, Jota, Shaqiri, Origi

This squad includes 17 foreign players and 22 non-clubgrown players, which means that someone had to have been unregistered. For the purposes of this, let's assume it's Matip. Whatever.

This is why Minamino had to go on loan - we were at capacity for foreign players, and the only way to bring Kabak in w

Migrations (2/n) : Somalie

On croit.

Christopher Nkunku – still on the rise?

When Christopher Nkunku left Paris Saint Germain in 2019 people had every reason to be skeptical.

The young midfielder was getting a more than fair number of minutes for the side in both Ligue 1 and the Coupe de France – it would have been easy for him to collect medals and a paycheck whilst playing a bit part role in the side, but that wasn’t going to be enough for his ambition.

Instead, he moved to RB Leipzig and joined a side full of stars who were yet to transform themselves into household names and looking to make a splash at European level.

So, has the bold move worked out for him? And what direction is his career currently heading in under the management of Julian Nagelsmann?

RB Leipzig’s style

Leipzig and Nagelsmann have become synonymous with a high-intensity, all-action, never-give-you-a-moments-peace style of football and look just as good whilst defending as they do when flowing forward.

The side have experimented with a range of formations this season and are flexible in their approach from both a game by game basis and within game. Often, they’ll operate in a 4-4-2, a 4-2-2-2, or a most-commonly a 3-4-2-1, with emphasis on dominating the centre regardless of XI.

Kevin Kampl (or one of the versatile Angelino or Konrad Laimer) and Marcel Sabitzer operate a double pivot and will look to build attacks from deeper positions, with the former tasked with protecting the defensive line whilst Sabitzer pushes forward.

Wide players are important though. Be it full backs streaming forward or genuine wide midfielders, they will make runs in behind and provide crosses to the centre forwards, whom this season have been either Alexander Sørloth or Yussuf Poulsen.

Just behind the forwards sit attacking midfielders, usually Dani Olmo, Emil Forsberg or the man himself, Christopher Nkunku. These are not traditional attacking midfielders though and play more like roaming shadow strikers who are expected to be in the box for finishing moves but have the option to drop deep if the play requires.

As a result of these extremely advanced attacking midfielders, the in-game formation could sometimes be looked at as a 4-2-4 or even a 3-3-4 so it is little surprise to see that Leipzig have scored in 90% of their matches in 20/21.

Pressing is key and to play in the side you must be selfless, putting the team before yourself and moving as an unrelenting unit. As the extremely high defensive line advances, so must the attackers (and vice-versa) to

The Chandrian: (Pt. III) Drossen Tor, The Ergin Empire, and Hubris

((TW))

Before I discuss the other foreshadowing I'm pretty confident I've found, I'd like to break a name down.

Drossen Tor.

Better folk than I have pointed out that drossen isn't a word, while Tor is a word for gate among other things. But Pat does more than just rip old words wholesale and use them for names; each of the more significant names he chooses can be broken down piece by piece. For instance, Ferrule's name is

Fe + rrule Ferr + ule Ferru + le etc.

And each of those pieces has a significant meaning for the character. It's not just the name itself, it's also the pieces of it. So, let's see how that philosophy affects the Blac of Drossen Tor.

The more astute among you would (and have) pointed out that the Black of Drossen Tor sounds phonetically a lot like the "black dress" that Lady Lackless wears. But the pieces?

Dross: Noun dross (usually uncountable, plural drosses)

  1. Waste or impure matter.
  2. Residue that forms on the surface of molten metal from oxidation.
  3. The impurities in metal.
  4. A waste product from working with metal. quotations ▼

Basically just slag or iron waste, as well as the byproduct of making wine.

  1. (informal, transitive) To beat, to rough up. Ze hebben mijn beste vriend gisteren gerost met ploertendoders. They beat up my best friend with blackjacks yesterday.

  2. (transitive, dated, of horses) to groom with a grooming comb. Synonym: roskammen

  3. (transitive, Suriname) to rape. Synonym: verkrachten

It's at this point that I started to notice a dark pattern emerging. Sexual assault is a strong theme throughout the books, and for good reason.

Kvothe is a greek tragedy, complete with dead parents and a fatal flaw: his folly. He himself confirms numerous times that this story is not a happy one. It's a tragedy, plain and simple.

When a greek hero exhibits folly, it's generally classified as hubris. Hubris has three definitions that we can adhere to.

  1. To incur the wrath of the gods

  2. Arrogance to the point of folly

  3. An archaic legal term for sexual assault.

Given all of the foreshadowing with his experiences with intoxication, I think it's likely that Kvothe is going to be drugged with something that makes him lose control of himself-- possibly the Cthaeh's ophalum, maybe something else. But either way, Kvothe is going to be left helpless, just like when he took the nahlrout in the library and ambrose outwitted

They had a lot to do. Somehow several months at sea hadn’t been enough to even start on all the last minute ‘oh my gods, we need to—’s that had cropped up around the ship. Darkos wasn’t a lot of help here and he didn’t really like that.

But he did get to comb through Geela’s letters-from-Barney to try and find the location of Adora Bella, and he did like that. Geela had carefully removed most of the ‘saucy details’ as she called them. This was a term his elderly neighbor might have used when gossiping about two teenagers who spent a night at the lake together, but he wasn’t going to tell Geela this. Instead, he’d just nodded, relieved that he wouldn’t have to read about Geela’s shortcomings, in the words of Barney.

He could trace the general phase in the twins' lives when they'd received contact from Adora but even then, it was a loose tie at best. No reason to believe that Adora had been waiting for any specific moment to reach out to her siblings. All Darkos really knew was that she’d lived in Bananaville but didn’t anymore. Obviously.

All of that took about twenty-three minutes to deduce. He spent the rest of the last few days at sea reading more about his damned siblings and having Jane push him around the boat, watching the sailors hoisting and heaving and prepping the ship for coastal raids or whatever Geela planned on doing.

In the evenings, he played cards with Sale and a rotating band of pirates. Sometimes the cooks, Ru and Mazy were there, and they’d bet over spare food or other snacks. There were other pirates Darkos was beginning to recognize. Althea Soft Paws, one of the pirates that had helped Geela interrogate the alchemis

“So… here is where most of us - ‘us’ being those interested in thaumaturgy, or the science behind the Hiek machine, or the mysteries of the psyche and ensouled things - start our journey.”

They no longer shared a shed; instead, what had been a giant cabinet of a room was cleaned out of crates and sleeves and sacks, and now contained the sleeping commodities for its two seated occupants. A ring sconce equally well suited to either torches or tapers sat cold against the interior wall. Starlight from early early morning scythed indoors through the window slats, lightly crocheting vegetative residents of plantpots and dirt-filled bowls with silver.

Ktsn saw with perfect clarity, though, thanks to a bright orb atop Eihks’s palm.

“Now,” he continued, poking at the light with his other hand.

His “lecturing mode” voice had commandeered the balcony of his throat, and he managed to perfectly divide his attention between his karkshesh pupil and his ball of light.

“The witchlight is part of the Troolitan genre of magic. Troolitan arts are curious for several reasons. They are usually quite efficient. They are easily enough accessed that even those with barely any thaumaturgical talent can often conjure them. And - barring some very odd universe compositions, like localities where magical stability shrinks as gravitational influence grows, or where glueballs automatically transition into simple hadrons and back - an adequately capable person can produce them effectively anywhere. No need for your skein to extend its field of effect; the magic just works.”

Eihks tossed the orb in a lazy battery of loop-the-loops. Its path bobbed and weaved with insect suddenness, falling up in occasional spurts before continuing on its way to his other hand. Ktsn couldn’t tear herself from the sight. The few tools that the previous proprietor left behind in the room had their shadows violently boxed about by the infant sun.

“It’s the sort of thing that a lot of parents do with their children in the extrafacetary climes,” Eihks told her. “Families sometimes see it like the moment they first manage to read a sentence aloud, or the first time the kid manages to get in touch with a practice eidolon. A bonding moment.”

Several years into transition, I feel like embracing a more Non-Binary identity, but a big part of it is due to the relentless transphobia I have experienced from cis women. Is this wrong or problematic of me?

Background info: 23 y/o Trans Women, Been on HRT for about 5 years.

I think back to when I was first questioning in my early teen years, or when I first started transitioning as a young adult, and I never wanted to be Trans. It was not a label I wanted to embrace or accept. I just wanted to be an ordinary woman, not a "trans woman". To be honest I was ashamed of being Trans and my deepest desire was to one day be able to pass and go stealth.

But as the years went by my perspective on that has changed rather dramatically, mostly due to the transphobia I've faced. I've been disowned by my entire family, lost jobs, faced extensive stints of unemployment, been homeless, have been asked to leave public spaces, relentlessly stalked and doxxed online, in addition to of course the lovely daily dose of slurs and verbal harassment most of us who are visibly trans experience on the regular.

Throughout my time as an out and visible trans person, the vast majority of this harassment and hostility has come from Cis Women. Not Cis Men. About the worst I get from men is laughter, the typical completely unprompted 'I dont date trannies' spiel, and the occasional chaser sending me creepy DMs. Now I'm mostly asexual due to a combination of extreme body dysphoria and HRT completely nuking my libido, but I am well aware of how fiercely protective cis men are over their sexualities and how that's where the bulk of their more extreme transphobia stems from, and I think that may be why I've had less terrible experiences with them than other Trans Women. But the transphobia from cis women has been on another level entirely. Its been so relentless and pervasive during basically my entire adult life that I don't know anything else. Even going back to my family, it was my mother and female relatives who said the nastiest and most vile things imaginable to me before kicking me out the door, my dad while not remotely accepting was far less hateful and demeaning about it, and to date he's still the only family member that I occasionally talk to (although he doesn't gender me correctly or use my name sadly). I don't trust cis women at all anymore, and quite frankly I'm rather afraid of them, because I know that arguably the biggest danger to my safety is them being upset or offended at me existing next to them in public and getting their partner or other male authority figure to violently attack me in retaliation. Its for this reason that I still us

40 powerful concepts for understanding the world.

MEGATHREAD TIME: In 40 tweets I will describe 40 powerful concepts for understanding the world. Some are complex so forgive me for oversimplifying, but the main purpose is to incite curiosity. Okay, here we go:

Causal Reductionism: Things rarely happen for just 1 reason. Usually, outcomes result from many causes conspiring together. But our minds cannot process such a complex arrangement, so we tend to ascribe outcomes to single causes, reducing the web of causality to a mere thread.

Ergodicity: A die rolled 100 times has equal probabilities to 100 dice rolled once; rolling a die is “ergodic”. But if the die gets chipped after 10 throws so it’s likelier to roll 4, then 1 die 100 times =/= 100 dice once (non-ergodic). Many treat non-ergodic systems as ergodic.

Dunning-Kruger Effect: Awareness of the limitations of cognition (thinking) requires a proficiency in metacognition (thinking about thinking). In other words, being stupid makes you too stupid to realize how stupid you are. graphic

Emergence: When many simple objects interact with each other, they can form a system that has qualities that the objects themselves don’t. Examples: neurons creating consciousness, traders creating the stock-market, simple mathematical rules creating “living” patterns.

Cultural Parasitism: An ideology parasitizes the mind, changing the host’s behavior so they spread it to other people. Therefore, a successful ideology (the only kind we hear about) is not configured to be true; it is configured only to be easily transmitted and easily believed.

Cumulative Error: Mistakes grow. Beliefs are built on beliefs, so one wrong thought can snowball into a delusional worldview. Likewise, as an inaccuracy is reposted on the web, more is added to it, creating fake news. In our networked age, cumulative errors are the norm.

Survivorship Bias: We overemphasize the examples that pass a visibility threshold e.g. our understanding of serial killers is based on the ones who got caught. Equally, news is only news if it’s an exception rather than the rule, but since it’s what we see we treat it as the rule

Simpson’s Paradox: A trend can appear in groups of data but disappear when these groups are combined. This effect can easily be exploited by limiting a dataset so that it shows exactly what one wants it to show. Thus: beware of

Anarchy is the state of a society being freely constituted without authorities or a governing body. It may also refer to a society or group of people that entirely rejects a set hierarchy.[1]

Anarchy was first used in 1539, meaning "an absence of government".[2] Pierre-Joseph Proudhon adopted anarchy and anarchist in his 1840 treatise What Is Property? to refer to anarchism,[3][4] a new political philosophy and social movement which advocates stateless societies based on free and voluntary associations. Anarchists seek a system based on the abolishment of all unjustified, coercitive hierarchy and the creation of system of direct democracy and worker cooperatives.[5][6] In practical terms, anarchy can refer to the curtailment or abolition of traditional forms of government and institutions. It can also designate a nation or any inhabited place that has no system of government or central rule. Anarchy is primarily advocated by individual anarchists who propose replacing government with voluntary institutions. These true institutions or associations generally are modeled on nature since they can represent concepts such as community and economic self-reliance, interdependence, or individualism. Although anarchy is often negatively used as a synonym of chaos or societal collapse, this is not the meaning that anarchists attribute to anarchy, a society without hierarchies.[1] Proudhon wrote that anarchy is "Not the Daughter But the Mother of Order".[7]

Anarchy comes from the Medieval Latin anarchia and from the Greek anarchos ("having no ruler"), with an-+ archos ("ruler") literally meaning "without ruler".[2] The circle-A anarchist symbol is a monogram that consists of the capital letter A surrounded by the capital letter O. The letter A is derived from the first letter of anarchy or anarchism in most European languages and is the same in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts. The O stands for order and together they stand for "society seeks order in anarchy" (French: la société cherche l'ordre dans l'anarchie),[3] a phrase written by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon in his 1840 book What Is Property?[4]

Although most known societies are characterized by the presence of hierarchy or the state, anthropologists have studied many egalitarian stateless societies, including most nomadic hunter-gatherer societies[8][9] and horticultural societies such as the Semai and the Piaroa. Many of these societies can be considered to be anarchic in the sense that they explicitly reject the idea of centralized political authority.[10] The egalitarianism typical of human hunter-gatherers is interesting when viewed in an evolutionary context. One of humanity's two closest primate r

Does anyone know a good translation for the word 'ovladiti'?

Edit: Meant to say ovladati, not ovladiti, whoops.

The pesky verb ovladati has always given me a great deal of trouble in the Croatian language. For one, it has (from an English speaker's perspective) very strange dopune since it tends to take the instrumental case, and so what would be transitive in English "I want to master the language" is sort of syntactically intransitive in Croatian (želim ovladati jezikom).

But the real difficulty I have is in translating it. Above, I translated it as 'to master', and in many cases that seems to work. In English, to master really means to perfectly acquire or learn something, to perfect it, to master it once and for all, to be a master of it, obviously.

But I very often see the word ovladati used in contexts that are a bit less about perfection, and more just about regular acquisition.

Take this excerpt from a paper on non-native Croatian speakers' "mastery" of indefinite pronouns:

> Predstavit će se rezultati kvantitativnoga anketnoga istraživanja ovladanosti mogućnošću izražavanja negativnoga stava upotrebom neodređenih zamjenica.

I would translate that like so:

The results of a quantitative survey will be presented exploring their mastery of the potential to express a negative attitude by the use of indefinite pronouns.

But this paper isn't exploring their 'mastery', per se, because it's exploring the degree to which they have, or have not, "mastered", or "internalized", or somehow "acquired" knowledge of the meaning of indefinite pronouns.

If it were exploring their 'mastery' of it, then they would be masters of it. So I can't use the word mastery here, because mastery wouldn't make sense. I've been having trouble finding a suitable synonym though. I could find an alternative way of saying it, like "The results of a quantitative survey will be presented exploring to what extent they have mastered the potential to express a negative attitude by the use of indefinite pronouns." But then that's sort of changing the content of what's written.

Has anyone else struggled with this verb? Does anyone have a suggestion for a good way to translate it? It's a tricky one.

Lonerism is my perfect album. (A review of Lonerism)

WARNING: THIS REVIEW IS SUPER LONG AND A LITTLE CONVOLUTED. READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION

Yo. What's up. It's time to review my favorite album of all time ever, Lonerism. This album is me, and I'm so glad that Kevin made this album and that I found when I did. Maybe a few years ago when I first heard it, I'd say something like, "Oh yeah I feel pretty lonely and stuff like that," but over the years I've formed a such a firm and emotional connection to this album and it is a surreal and dimensional experience. So let's do this.

Track I - Be Above It

This is about as perfect as an opener for an album of this nature can be, it gets the main idea of what the album is going to be about across, and it does it in a fun way. This is my second favorite of the openers for his albums, it's just so atmospheric and eye catching sonically and lyrically. Sonically, it's quite claustrophobic with the never changing drum pattern, with different effects and synths coming and going. Lyrically, it's also quite good, the constant, "Gotta be above it" in the background adds to the claustrophobic atmosphere. I love these few lyrics a lot:

"And I gotta bide my time as a face in the crowd, I know that I gotta be above it now! And I can't let them all just bring me down!"

Perfect start.

Track II - Endors Toi

Fun fact, Endors Toi is French for fall asleep. Sonically, this one is just so fun and adventurous! The drums change around the fills quite a bit, making the song feel fresh and not repetitive. The synths and guitars are also very fresh-sounding. Lyrically, I believe this is an underrated gem. The lyrics tell a tale of being in a lucid dream state, not wanting to return to real life because it's just not as captivating, which I can relate to. At least, that's what I get from the lyrics.

"Soothing repeat, I look down at my feet, It's a hypnotist's arm, And it works like a charm! But I won't be deprived, Real world, surreal life! Oh, I doubt there is time, Go to sleep, you'll be fine. In the morning you'll find, Real life was such a grind! Off I go, day is done, Where a new one's just begun!"

Track III - Apocalypse Dreams

*This will always be my favorite from the album, sonically it's a fucking adventure, and lyrically it hits you like a truck. The first half of it seems like it's unsure of itself, similar to how most feel about change and/or going through change. The all

Please follow guidelines to protect you from permanent vocal damage. Vocal damage is permanent and something to be avoided in the greatest sense.)

the purpose of this guide is to shed light on some of the topics rather obscure in L's voice guide aswell as aovf (art of voice feminization - zheanna erose)

This is meant to be read only after L's voice guide if it isnt helpful enough and after theoretical understanding of voice through the art of voice feminization playlist . This was written due to the overwhelming data explained in aovf aswell as L’s voice guide, which makes certain segments of data rather obscure. Here’s a list of subjects discussed in this post (link)

Exclamatory: This guide does not include the following topics. Please do share a clear guide on it in the comments so it can be edited into this (you will be credited.)

1 . Vocal fry elimination

2 . I CAN’T DO IT UNLESS IM SCREAMING

Despite this being capable of being broken down into several parts, voice feminization requires two things mainly:

i. Moving your voice to the front of your throat (resonance)

ii. Raising your larynx (see point 16)

2. What about other segments?

Resonance and larynx raise together work on giving you a thinner and breathier voice. Although voice can be broken down into many more segments, resonance and larynx raise will solve and do

The beauty of Del Piero is right here, that is, in the normality of being number 1, often torn by the search for a balance between talent and dedication to the cause.

Also because the bulletin board does not lie: with Del Piero Juventus reached very distant peaks today.

The truth is that Del Piero conveys less interest than certain characters eternally over the top.

Behind the mask of the football player is the man, and never as in the case of Del Piero can this be said without running the risk of appearing rhetorical.

How Time Flows in the Distributary

This post explains the nature of time in the Distributary.

So this post is in response to the post by u/callsignwraith92 called "Timeline in the Distributary: Billions of Years or Thousands of Years?“ I thought it was such a great question that the answer deserved a post. Also the post follows on quite nicely from my last one about Dark Phantom Energy.

In their post callsignwraith92 raised some confusion found in the Katabasis lore entry that suggested the Distributary was both 12.1 billion years old and also that only thousands of years had past since it's creation. The first lore mention is here:

>"You know yourselves," she says. "Let me tell you of your cosmos. We live in a spatially infinite, isotropic universe 12.1 billion years old*. Its metallicity is ideal for life and for the spread of technological civilizations. In time, the distance between all points in the universe will contract to zero, and the cosmos will collapse into a singularity, to be reborn in fire. There will be no end to eternity here."*

And the second one:

>"Our universe is a subset of another.
>
>We live within a singularity, a knot in space-time, that orbits a star in another world."Conventional relativity would suggest that time outside an event horizon passes quickly compared to a clock within, but our universe has a peculiar relationship with its mother.
>
>Thousands of years have passed for us on the Distributary. Outside? Centuries, at most. We are a swift eddy in a slow river."

So firstly we should point out that Mara is not talking about our universe. While our universe is generally considered isotropic (the same in all directions) our universe is 13.8 billion years old and expanding where as Mara's universe is 12.1 billions years old and contracting.

So what could govern such an impossible discrepancy?

Well the answer is that the Distributary is both 12.1 billion years old and only thousands of years have passed for the Awoken relative to the parent universe.

To understand why we have to

Homebrewed: An Introduction To Dungeon Synth

https://i.imgur.com/UCNvDsT.jpg

#Examples

For anyone wary of delving into a large primer on a metal adjacent genre, below are a two examples of both classic and modern dungeon synth. While albums are a more complete example, I have narrowed it down to two songs.

Dungeon synth is fascinating if not a little cryptic in its history and existence. If any of the above two examples are interesting or the concept of grim musicians making fantasy synth, then I urge you to travel further.

#Introduction

Dungeon Synth is a style of at-home made fantasy synth. Despite it being a modern incarnation, its history is rooted in the 1990’s black metal scene, when its members created ambient synth projects and circulated those releases through tapes. These black metal side projects laid the groundwork for dungeon synth’s atmosphere and ethos regarding aesthetics, production, and distribution. Dungeon synth is primarily a solo endeavor with one person writing, playing, producing, and distributing the music. Today, it has become a diverse genre and cottage industry with tape labels, forums, festivals, and an international fanbase devoted to its history and development. Branching out from its beginnings to include a spectrum of sound, dungeon synth has transitioned beyond its dark ambient beginnings to a sound that includes neoclassical, new age, medieval, and even chiptune music. The space between fans and creators, since its beginning, has been small, leading to an intimate scene that exists today almost entirely on the internet.

This aspect of a virtual community and scene has shown itself unintentionally resilient within current events. The process of creating music in isolation and sharing it with an international fanbase through virtual albums and mailed media is something that has been unaffected since the wake of a global pandemic. Livelihoods of the creators and parcel service interruptions aside, dungeon synth, along with other virtual genres, has the potential to be a blueprint for future musical scenes that exist without in person contact. This divorce from the physical aligns with dungeon synth’s escapist aesthetics, as its thematic storytelling offers an at home journey that is safe and s

Many topics are touched upon, and several themes can be derived from this section, such as, resurrection, ramifications of a wicked mortal life, the Second Coming, the signs of the second coming, Spiritual Death, the Millennium, Hell, and so on.

1- Voice of Jesus Christ

Throughout the D&C, the voice is God the Son, Jesus Christ, who is giving these revelations to the Prophet Joseph Smith.

1- The Great I Am

This is one of Christ's many titles and names. This is the title that was used when Christ revealed himself to Moses on Mount Sinai.

2- As a hen gathereth

When danger is present, a hen will call out to her chicks who come running to her for protection. In a similar fashion, Christ calls to us when imminent danger is upon us.

3- Your sins are forgiven you

All of those (not just freshly baptized individuals) who have come unto Christ by baptism in our church have been justified by faith in Jesus, who have been faithful in their covenants, have been forgiven of their sins. Not all of us are fortunate enough to receive a direct revelation to hear these reassuring words from Christ himself, but essentially, we can feel similar blessings if we are on the covenant path, magnifying our callings to the best of our abilities, and remaining active in the church.

3- Your advocate

An advocate is one who defends you. In a judicial courtroom, the advocate is the defense attorney. On the Final Judgment day, Jesus is our advocate who will defend his faithful saints, and he never loses a case.

5- His good will

Good Will = Grace (synonyms in this context).

7- The gathering of mine elect

Just like chicks, the Lord's voice will extend to all people throughout the world. His voice includes anyone who speaks with the spirit, the prophet, General Authorities, missionaries, members of the church. Any who hear the clarion call, who listen to the whisperings of the spirit and obey are the Lord's elect and chosen.

8- Gathered in unto one place

At the time that this vision was given, the saints did not know where this central location would be. Sometime before the tribulation and desolation of the Second Coming, the Lord will have his saints gather to Jackson County Missouri. A final gathering place

Trans terminology and abbreviations

Latest update: 2020-17-12

Hi all! It's the greenhorn Zoey again back with another question about all the confusing parts about being trans again!

Me being me, I haven't yet had the courage to step out and post in the bigger trans subs. So for now I'm sticking close to my little secret space surrounded by my wonderful sisters. ❤️ (I hope you all can bear with me a little longer while I'm still learning the ropes 🙏)

Aaaaanyyyways, reading throught posts and comments I've very often encountered several terms and abbreviations I'm unfamiliar with, although I'm doing my best to learn them as I go, there is a LOT of terminology used 😅

Thus far I've basically gathered most of the basics like MTF, FTM, NB, AMAB, AFAB, MAAB. However (the introvert I am), I'm also somewhat new to Reddit so when I encounter a new term or abbreviation I don't know if it's a "trans" thing like "amab" or a reddit thing like "rn".

But for example, what's the deal with the egg? Many talk about when their egg cracked or what not, and I'm here like "should I've had an egg?" o.O Then we have the other stuff to like what's a "chaser" and why are they bad?

So yeaah.. >.>

Any helpful sister wanna help their much more inexperienced sister out by going over some terminology or point me to a trans lexicon maybe? 😅

Thanks a bunch and love you all! ❤️

Quick update: A huuuuuuuuuge thanks to all and everyone that has helped with this list! Really! ❤️ You're all the most awesome gals I've met! And you're so awesome that you've quickly outpaced me in my ability to add stuff and properly cross-reference it against the rest of the list. x)

But don't worry it only means that I'm only going to be able to add stuff once a day in the evening, instead of continuously adding as it comes. And once again, WOW! Really! Everything in this list we have today was created yesterday in only one day! And we got over a hundred comments, and sooo many good and insightful additions! I'm really proud to be part of this community, to have you as my sisters and to be able to call myself your sister ❤️❤️

Zoe out 😎

---------------------------------------------------!

Attention! BIG list incoming!! X) !

---------------------------------------------------!

The most basic of basic that I managed to gather myself.

  • MTF - male to female

  • FTM - female to male

  • AMAB - assigned male at birth

  • AFAB - assigned female at birth

  • MAAB - Male assigned at birth(?)

  • NB - non-binary

Worldbuilding Wednesday — The Underworld: Part Two, Paradise

Got questions about worldbuilding and story ideas? Post them here.

If you have questions about the specifics of the project you're working on that don't constitute prose critique then this is the place for them. We would ask that users do their best to engage with each other's work rather than merely solicit feedback and give nothing in return.

Last week we explored the Underworld, focusing on its entrance and neutral destinations. In the last section, we briefly touched on Purgatory as being distinct from Limbo, prefacing our move in this feature toward a discussion of Heavens or Paradises by comparing three historical examples, thus continuing our exploration of themes surrounding death. Over the next month, this feature will continue with explorations of Hell, before moving on to Chthonic deities and other denizens of the underworld such as psychopomps.

As mentioned last week, cosmological models of death and its results are impossible broad—any significant exploration requiring more of a book than an individual article—so I've decided to use the underworld of Greek mythology as a jumping-off point to explore associated tropes and hopefully give people starting areas of interest for their own research.

We begin again with the Ancient Greek underworld, Hades, and a location that has maintained an inconsistent location throughout its history. Initially reserved only for the heroic offspring of the gods themselves, its utility in accompanying culture changed as the needs of that culture changed too.

The Greek analogue to the later Christian Paradise: Elysium.

Elysium

As with much of Greek Mythology, the precise nature and framing of Elysium have remained inconsistent, not just from incomplete records and over a millennium of changing beliefs, but through the state of the polytheistic religion itself—without a central Church or a unified top-down governmental regime, mere acknowledgement of Elysium was restricted to certain Greek religious and philosophical sects and cults; far from the dominant views of later cosmological models.

Initially separate from Hades (the Greek underworld) itself, its location was given by the presumed works of Homer as "located on the western edge of the Earth by the

New Hot Take:

okay so here me out here:

the word "gender" is useless and should be abolished. i think the concept that gender describes is better called sex roles/norms and that "gender identity" should be called neurological sex. the word gender was originally just a synonym of sex. i honestly think the word gender itself is to blame for a lot of the confusion surrounding trans people and dysphoria and such. in my ideal world things would be redefined so that:

biological sex: someones physical sex makeup and comprises of sex characteristics, sex hormones, neurological sex, and chromosomes

neurological sex: the sex of one's brain, we currently call this "gender identity" but since being trans would be because of anatomical brain differences, neurological sex is a better term

sex roles and norms: societal rules and expectations that are imposed on either sex, examples would be males wear blue, females wear pink. to clarify though, some sex roles/norms can be imposed my society but some are somewhat based on biology

sex dysphoria: when bodily sex and neurological sex don't match

transsexual: someone who has sex dysphoria and has transitioned to resolve it or has the intention to transition in the future

honestly gender vs. sex is a debate about semantics that has just confused people. defining things by sex simply makes more sense, and that's what people did before. notice its always been "homosexual" and not "homogender" and its "sexism" and not "genderism"

The language of the cow

A few things about cows you probably did not know.

There is evidence cows were first domesticated about 10,000 years ago in two or three locations, generally somewhere between modern day Turkey and India.  As domesticated animals go, cattle are among the earliest, perhaps because of the multitude of useful products they provide humans: food products such as milk, blood, fat, and meat; and secondary products such as clothing and tools manufactured from hair, hides, horns, hooves and bones. There are people in the world today who still use cow dung as their primary fuel. Cattle are still used as load-bearers and for pulling plows and wagons. Culturally, cattle were so useful they became a symbol of, and synonymous with wealth.  Is that man rich? Yes, he has many cattle.

There is a widely held theory that the success of man as earth’s dominant creature is largely tied to diet. Those cultures that found a way to improve diets with higher calories and more protein grew larger, stronger bodies and could win wars more easily.  But there was an even larger, unseen benefit, calories and protein also build smarter brains. With a dairy cow meeting most of the basic caloric needs of a family, the family had time to do other things besides hunt for food. The cultures that domesticated the cow were the cultures that dominated their rivals, grew into powerful countries, created architecture, and advanced technologically.

I can communicate with people I have never met across the internet, because, at least in part, the domesticated cow supported the growth of tribes, into villages, into nations, and created a need for a unified and lasting language.

The root language for much of the world is called Proto-Indo-European (PIE). Not much is known of this language except that it is the basis of five major language groups, Greek, Latin, Slavic (Russian, Polish), Germanic (Norwegian, Dutch), and Sanskrit. With only a few exceptions, like Hungarian, Finnish, and Basque, the  languages of Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and India share the PIE ancestor. Sanskrit is at least 4000 years old and a dead language much like Latin. Sanskrit is the basis of Hebrew, Arabic, and Persian, as well as the many languages of India and Pakistan.

In ancient India and elsewhere, cattle became a central component of the economy. Even where beef was not eaten, dairy was a daily source of calories and protein. If a family had a milk cow, the family would survive. If the family had many c

If a person from 200 years ago who never left their remote village saw a diverse group of humans from around the world for the first time, the first thing they would immediately think would be: "Why do these people all look the same?"

People who travel to regions in Central Asia, Russia, and China often remark that everyone looks different from one another.

Visitors remark that some people look European, and others look like they are from Beijing.

Even siblings with the same birth parents in these regions may be described as having a stark contrast in appearance from one another, sometimes even from both parents.

Upon bringing this up with the locals, visitors are surprised to discover that the locals were, for the most part, completely unaware of this. Some who visitors would describe as very different, locally, they are perceived to look similar.

This same type of situation is often seen in other, typically obscure areas of the world. Such as parts of North Africa, where foreigners may describe a group as consisting of people who look European, further south African, or sometimes Indian. In some parts of northeastern India and Nepal, people are often thought to look like they are from Mumbai or Shanghai.

What people are describing is very clear and distinct patterns reemerging within these populations.

What is occurring here is pareidolia; the perception of a recognizable image or meaningful pattern in random data, where none exists.

https://preview.redd.it/iulc301kwfq61.jpg?width=200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=288dc86efd398b3d24ca15d4af9a0df707365027

An example of pareidolia in rock formations on Mars, the rocks form an image of a face.

When viewing two people from opposing sides of the world side by side, people would typically describe an identifiable difference between them, in a way which differs from what you would typically describe when viewing two people from the same culture side by side.

However, this observation could not occur without the use of a visual reference, which is perception that depends on a persons past experience.

The traits being observed are the same type of traits that a single group of people are genetically capable of expressing within themselves. There are some people within the same families who have brown hair and blond hair. Similarly, there are some people within the same families who have dark skin and light skin. There is no difference.

The process of passing on genetic alleles is completely randomized, and not intended to fall in specific patterns. There are people who have red hair, dark skin,
