No ID needed: Carolina Sphinx moth caterpillar/tobacco hornworm (manduca sexta). Munching on cayennes, moved to a nearby willow. Always feel like they will whip out a hookah at any moment and give me confusing directions

Where nightmares begin! I was pruning the cherry tomatoes and my hand grazed this BEAST of a Tobacco Hornworm. It gave me a scare!!! Such hefty creatures. Kind of like a massive gummy worm....

Initially assumed the critter devouring our tomatoes is a tomato hornworm, but it looks like the tobacco hornworm by the descriptions I found online (we have WAY too many tomatoes this year so we are happy to let the little guy/gal indulge :+). SW PA.

PSA: Watch for Tomato/Tobacco Hornworms!
Posting this since it impacted me this morning. Found a tomato hornworm munching on my JalapeΓ±o plant. Luckily I was able to get them in time and the plant should be okay. This thing snacks on all things in the nightshade family which includes peppers! So if youβre growing tomatoes and see something munching keep an eye out before it gets to your peppers
Iβm spraying neem oil and thuricide to stop these bugs next time!

Pretty sure this is a tobacco hornworm. This ONE that I found has destroyed easily 1/4 of a plant already. I removed it and only found one more. Any tips for eradicating these things before they get out of hand? I am already having issues with cucumber beetles, I want to hit this head on.

Resolution: got this tobacco hornworm off my pepper plant. I was so afraid of hurting him, but he seemed to relax a little in the pumpkin leaf. He was so close to the biggest score of his career, too!

Found this tobacco/tomato hornworm on my tomatoes today! Hardly any damage done on the tomatoes and did not find any others or eggs on any of the other tomato plants. I wonder if this is the culprit behind my sunflower decimation π§

Do tobacco hornworms glow under a black light like tomato hornworms?
I have some of these suckers in my garden (also have the parasitic wasps!) but thought it would be fun to take my cousin out to look for them under a black light last night.
I guess our light wasn't strong enough because we didn't see anything, but then I remembered it was tomato hornworms that glow. Do tobacco worms do this also? They're so similar but I'm not too familiar with their glow abilities.

How to tell when a tobacco hornworm is close to pupating?
This is my first time caring for caterpillars, and since I ordered them from somewhere that sells them as feeders (it's cheaper), so they didn't specify age or instar.
Is there a way to tell before they actually start pupating? Should I take any precautions or extra steps if I notice they're close? I have some soil in their cage since I heard they pupate underground.
Edit- To clarify, by 'some soil' I mean a plastic container of at least 4in of soil

Trying to get a tobacco hornworm to pupate
I've got a tobacco hornworm that I've been keeping and feeding for the past several days, and as of yesterday it stopped eating and started wandering around its jar. I recognised this behaviour as it looking for a place to burrow to pupate.
At the moment I've got it in a large jar half full of sphagnum moss, which it has burrowed into, but it's continued wandering around the jar in and out of the moss, so I'm not sure if it's an appropriate medium. So what sort of substrate is appropriate or suitable for this species to pupate?

This absolute unit of a tobacco hornworm chowed through the top of one of my tomatoes. In a moment of mercy, I gave him a stern lecture and relocated him to a stray volunteer tomato in the compost. This is his only reprieve.
