Tamil film's new era oru discussion

These days even after we have directors like pa.ranjith, myskin, vetrimaran. Why are there still movies which are totally dumb and no where to be relatable and has the same old script (with tiny changes like vadivelu's macham) with a mass hero, duet song which they call "commercial movies" that cross 100 crores.

Most of them just brush of the question saying "audience's taste bro!" Could it be because such "commercial movies" somehow normalise the whole art of movie making and overshadow a good film.

I call it overshadow because the same audience which enjoy movies like drishyam, dia, parasite and etc. in other languages (only recently, before it was just the English movies) are somehow reluctant to watch the critically aclaimed movies in tamil.

It is actually very funny to see how words like "commercial movies", "art film", "mass movie", "soga padam", "promotion", "bankable stars" being used in any discussion regarding a movie.

Shouldn't movies be just seen as a movie irrespective of everything?

There are a very small number of Directors in tamil cinema who seem to be a ray of hope and show how a movie can still earn money just for it being true to the art of film making. But still we miss out the fact that we still don't have crowd funding movies which could be a cool thing especially for a society like ours as it could open a lot of discussions in a society be it politics or anything ,why is that we don't have the concept still?

Can we hope for better future in tamil cinema?

#DaBarattam review

PS: Reposting SVK's Review Had stored it my mobile. Discovered it today. HAPPY READING!!

I'm happy to watch this 5th film of our own Tamil MCU.
In case you don't know what Tamil MCU is, it is nothing but Muthaiah Cinematic Universe. Director Muthaiah is known for his mAsTeRpIeCeS like Marudhu, Komban, etc not to forget the film which started the Tamil MCU in the first which is Kutti Puli πŸ‘Œ
There are many angles I could analyze this film but first I would like to analyze this "film" as a film, at least that is what they claim this one is. The story is very simple, the villain kills Hero's father , hero kills his son and another associate of him(for a reason which we will be discussing down below) and for this the Villain kills Hero's akka and mama and for this the Hero cuts down the villains head keeps it his family fridge next to the dosa mavu and paal packet literally.
Let's talk about screenplay and characterization,
The hero is a lawyer who recently registered with the bar association, the female lead is another lawyer. So we were talking about a certain associate of the villain being killed along with villain's son right? So this is guy basically a pervert who targets girls without a dhupatta πŸ˜‚. He passes a lewd comment on a girl and her friend slaps him right away with a her footwear and somebody takes a video of it and makes it viral and in response this guy rapes her for 18 days and makes her a drug addict as well and makes her roam around in Madurai now a nympho 🀷(how he managed to do all these in a straight line sequentially is beyond me), the police are afraid to take the case further to avoid problems because this guy is the associate of the villain who is like invincible in Madurai. So Majima Mohan who apparently takes this case talks with the police but the police refuse to help so she takes this case to someone superior, so at this point what do you think she will be doing? She will be going to senior police officers? She will be asking the help of her senior lawyer councel? She will be going to some NGO? She will be seeking the help of the press? No!
She goes and asks the help of Goutham Karthik, A πŸ…±οΈundamavan who literally registered with the bar association a month ago or something πŸ‘Œ
Goutham Karthik's character is that of a idiot with nothing but pure wood in head. His biggest plan to tackle any complicated problem is beating up anything and everything. I'm not kidding at all. His characterization makes us feel that his

Cinema and religion: A look at 'Trance' and 'Halal Love Story'

Netflix series A Suitable Boy recently ran into trouble for showing a Muslim man and a Hindu woman kissing in a temple. Apart from the expected outrage on social media from right wing handles, an FIR was also filed against officials of the Over the Top (OTT) platform. The representation of religion on screen has periodically run into controversy with religious groups and the government, as in the case of films like Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Rahul Dholakia's Parzania, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, Rajkumar Hirani's PK or more recently Raju Murugan's Gypsy. In the current political climate, such outrage and censorship have become the norm, with a communal angle given to characters, scenes and subjects even if the film ostensibly does not deal with religion or communalism.

In such a scenario, it's interesting to take a look at three recent releases from the south which each critiqued a major religion β€” Trance (Malayalam), Halal Love Story (Malayalam) and Mookuthi Amman (Tamil). While the first was a theatrical release in February 2020, the other two films were released on OTT platforms due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It's also relevant to note that the criticism of the religion came from within the respective communities. Trance, which takes on Christian miracle workers, was written by Vincent Vadakkan; Halal Love Story, which is set in a community where a conservative Islamic organisation has great influence, was directed by Zakariya who co-wrote the film with Muhsin Parari; Mookuthi Amman, which exposes the corruption of Hindu godmen, was written by RJ Balaji who co-directed the film with NJ Saravanan.

The genre of each of these films is different. Trance is a psychological drama, Halal Love Story is a comedy with elements of satire and Mookuthi Amman falls under the 'saamy padam' category, perhaps unique to Indian cinema. Their approach, too, varies. Here's how:

Trance: Directed by Anwar Rasheed and written by Vincent Vadakkan, Trance opened to great expectations thanks to its stellar cast. The film had Fahadh Faasil, Nazriya, Soubin, Dileesh Pothan, Gautham Menon, Chemban Vinod, Vinayakan, Sreenath Bhasi and others. However, it was met with a mixed response from the audience. The film is based on the Marxist idea that religion, as a construct of society, is the opium of the people, and this is reiterated numerous times within the ambit of Christianity.

Fahadh plays Viju, a motivational speaker who is recruited to become a miracle working pastor calle

Movie of the Week - Samsaram adhu Minsaram

This will be recurrent feature every Saturday afternoon, when we will curate and post a dank Tamil movie for people to watch over the weekend. Suggestions for the next week's movies will asked in a separate thread, and posted subsequently.

Samsaram adhu Minsaram

Actual Review: This week, we present to you, of the most niche directors in Tamil cinema, Visu, known for making movies in his favourite domain of family dramas. This movie lays down the benchmark as far as family dramas go. It has got everything, right from an ensemble cast including Raghuvaran, Lakshmi, Manorama. Kamala Kamesh, apart from Visu of course. This movie is an accurate description of life in pre-liberalisation Tamil middle class households, with a joint family setting. It has got the usual plot points and tropes expected in such a setting, but the novel way in which it strives to resolve these issues. Its all about duty, honour and the occasional comedy thanks to Manorama. To see how the genre of middle class family drama actually was, before the incessant Radhika and her mega serials ruined it, please to watch this movie.

Kuttichevuru Review: Ithu konjam serious aana padam, talks about duty, Thamizh paangu figures, kudumba kuthuvilakku marumagal, etc etc. So thaniya paarunga, sarakku adichtu gang aa pasangaloda paarunga, illa amma appa voda kuda paarunga.

Unga aal oda paatheengana, athunaala vara vibareethangalukku naanga poruppu illa. Ithukku melayum unga aal aa convince pannittu patheenga na, palaana vishiyam onnum nadakkathu innnikki night. "Nam kai ye namakku udhavi" thaan apparam ungalukku.

TL;DR: 'Tha Visu padam da. Sootha moodittu paaru 'na.

Sollavendiyatha ellam sollitten. Innume un chamathu mavane.

Link for the movie.

Ippadikki, Cameraman Ee.Ve.Ra udan ungal Sun TV kkaga Encounter_Ekambaram.

P.S: Please to share your experiences about the movie in this thread.
