I feel movies like Robot, 2.0, I, Vishwaroop (Tamil movies released for Rest of India in Hindi) are giving a bad name to Tamil cinema.

You'll relate only if you are into movies: I fully acknowledge the amount of money and efforts spent behind these movies, but because of these films, there is a general perception in the north (above Karnataka and AP mostly) that Tamil movies have over-the-top scripts and larger than life characters, with nothing but action and masala as the entertaining factor.

IMO, movies like Vikram Vedha, 96, KO, Vaaranam Aayiram (and many others like these) are exactly what make Tamil cinema great, but none of them are released for Rest of India (although their dubbed version was directly aired in some Hindi channel, which isn't that great an advertisement).

I would like to hear what is your opinion on Tamil movies. I am not talking about South Indian movies in general, so if you can't distinguish between Tamil and Telugu movies, it's better not to comment.

Identity crisis in the Tamils - culture wars and the moral engineering project

Dravidian parties are not fans of free speech so there’s been little to no criticism of their policies within the state, and national parties rarely understand TN enough to dissect its politics.

Any kind of critical analysis of Dravidian identity is rare, even though it can be very insightful. This speaks to the awful state of journalism and social sciences in the nation. I am not a social scientist, this is based on personal observations.

The preoccupation with a unique Tamil identity begins in earnest half a century ago, after the rise of the Dravidian parties to power. This was initially pushed in the political rallies, but it was particularly pernicious in schools, where children were told the values of their parents are rubbish, the values of their grandparents are out of date.

This created a lot of confusion. Starting about 40-50 years ago they were not only told to reject the past, but they were not told what values to believe in for a wholesome life. Thirukkural was added as an afterthought to remedy the vacuum, yet Kamba Ramayanam was excluded despite being the best example of Tamil poetry, because it was Hindu. Even Thirukkural has now become problematic in a way for its Vedic links, which is the very thing Dravidianism set out to destroy.

Thirukkural cannot come to your aid when you wonder whether it is proper to go out on a date, and how far do you take it.

Pabulum such as self esteem / self respect, everyone should be praised and supported was, and even now is in vogue. It hasn't worked in 50 years of political enforcement.

The population is thus estranged from what has gone on beforehand, and has become obsessed with identity. Instead of allowing the population to find out for themselves, this vacuum of identity is politicized and profited by the politicians, Tamil experts, entertainers and movie makers.

Tamils used to live in a world where identity issues were in the margins of society, nobody would begin a political meeting or movie by emphasising their Tamil identity.

Matinee heroes and heroines could speak Tamil in thick Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam accents or even Brahminical accents and be accepted. People, even politicians could own their diverse heritage. Today this permission to be different is only for the imported Bombay heroines.

The politics of social justice, equality and Tamilness has created a fake and artificial society where everyone has to constantly prove their Tamilness and social justice credentials, even if th

Indian Streaming platforms are actively pushing a value system change

Amazon, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar commission original productions that are tailor made for the web platform. It is well known that especially Amazon and NF take full advantage of the lenient regulatory framework for web programming to push the envelope of acceptability when it comes to sexuality and violence.

What is less well known is that they have programming guidelines that are against traditional Indian values and seek to aggressively push a Western liberal agenda on the Indian audience.

This means there won't be any Ramayan / Mahabharat type of Indic programming generally, and even if one is made it will be heavily filtered through a western liberal lens.

I've learned from some movie maker friends in the past that these web companies have script approval rights and do often insist on story line changes to accommodate their pet agenda even if it is not germane to the subject.

Say there is an innocent romance between a boy and a girl, a program executive from these corporates will say, why don't you include a scene where they are making out after school, or where they buy a condom? Or show an unhappy marriage and imply the woman finds love in another man or woman. The modern woman should not be Sati Savitri, but instead be one who puts her short term needs selfishly ahead of the long term well being of the family and the marriage.

Their favorite topics are pre-marital sex, gay lifestyle, casual hookups, public intoxication, infidelity, a lifestyle that worships money, dark crimes etc.

These topics often sell because of the taboo factor. They are obviously doing it to stand out in the market, and sure, that is capitalism, but there's also a calculated long term angle. They want an India which is full of individualists who need to entertain themselves with Netflix whenever they are desperate and lonely, which they will become if they are raised on such values.

Old marketing research from the 60s found that divorced families consume twice as much as families that stay together - two refrigerators, two TVs, two sofas etc. Which is why modern ad films even in India never show large families, but a couple or a couple and one child and one dog.

You will not easily find programming that promotes sanskari values, or sanatani ideas of sacrifice for the greater good, unless the Director / Storyteller is very strong willed and pushes back against the programming directives. Since an offer to Direct from Amazon or NF can be a once in a lifetime opportun

Top 100 Indian Movies of All Time - Drishyam (2013)

"Sheep without a Shepherd” is a 2019 Chinese blockbuster which earned $192M globally and received tremendous critical acclaim for its story and performances. A sequel to this Chinese blockbuster and a Malaysian remake are currently in production. Not many know that this Chinese blockbuster is actually a remake of an Indian movie which had already been successfully remade in 4 Indian languages and in Srilanka. The original masterpiece which became an award winning and cash making machine across multiple countries and film industries was the highest grossing Malayalam movie of all time “Drishyam”.

Drishyam (2013)
Directed by Jeethu Joseph
Produced by Antony Perumbavoor
Starring - Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Asha Sarath and Siddique
Written by Jeethu Joseph
Music by Anil Johnson
Budget/Box Office - INR 3.5 Crore/INR 75 Crore
Awards - Filmfare South Award and International Film Festival of India for best Film
IMDB Rating - 8.3/10
RT Rating - 96%
My Rating - 10/10

Jeethu Joseph had already become a well renowned writer director of suspense thrillers with 4 hit Malayalam movies under his belt before he unleashed his finest mystery onto the world. The idea of Drishyam came to Joseph when he heard about a legal battle between two families in the 90s. He wrote a very tight script with Mammootty in mind to be shot and released in a period of 2 months. Mammootty declined and Mohanlal signed the movie but got chicken pox before the movie’s first day of shooting. The shooting started without the movie’s protagonist who joined after 10 days and actually completed shooting for the movie quicker than planned. The movie was released 2 months after the start of its principal photography and instantly became a blockbuster.

Drishyam is a very carefully crafted story which begins with an uneducated but smart man accused of murder sitting in a police station. In a flashback we see how Georgekutty played brilliantly by Mohanlal creates the perfect visual (Drishyam) for the world to see as he hides a crime to protect his family. Georgekutty is an uneducated cable TV provider who is extremely street smart and crime-literate due to his insatiable appetite of consuming crime movies and series. Georgekutty becomes the focus of an investigation when the Inspector General’s son goes missing in his locality. What ensues is a battle of wits between the cops and Georgekutty, whose meticulous a

Vidyasagar - the underrated gem

In Tamil cinema there have been some amazing composers - MSV, Illayaraja, ARR, Harris Jeyaraj, Yuvan etc. One name that we forget about is the legend that was Vidyasagar. Look at the list of movies he has composed for:

  • Karnaa
  • Dhill
  • Povellam Un Vasam
  • Alli thanda vaanam
  • Thaavasi
  • Run
  • Villain
  • Dhool
  • Anbe Sivam
  • Parthiban Kanavu
  • Thirumalai
  • Ghilli
  • Sullan
  • Madurey
  • Paramasivan
  • Ji
  • Majaa
  • Chandramukhi
  • Mozhi
  • Kuruvi

These movies atleast had 1-2 good (if not great) songs and great background score. How did he just fizzle out of all of a sudden? And why do you guys think he isn’t mentioned as often as Harris or Yuvan?

Trends in Bollywood that need to Stop !

An interesting article from 2010

Search all over internet and you will still find jokes about how bollywood is about couples running around trees. Bollywood does`nt deserve such remarks cause it has developed a lot compared to what it was in the 80`s(unless your film name is aarakshan, than yeah you definitely deserve those remarks). However that does`nt mean that Bollywood is great now. It still sucks and there are still a lot of irritating trends that goes on in bollywood like..

1)Shameless stars relaunching their careers:-

**Worst offenders:-**Uday ChopraEesha DeolJackie Bhagnani

Nepotism is highly prevalent in Bollywood. This has given some really untalented brats of rich celebrities an easy access into Bollywood . These star-sons have become huge failures rejected by the entire country. As if tormenting us with nightmares by releasing horrible films is`nt enough, these "Stars" re-launch themself in their own production house in order to give the audience another chance to realize what a great acting talent they are missing on.

These great acting talents:

2)Stereotype colleges:-

**Worst offenders:**kuch kuch hota hainaarakshanMohabbatein3 idiotsMunnabhaiand basically any bollywood film which involves a college.

Almost all of these bollywood films involve the hero falling in love with the principal`s daughter and probably in a huge clash with the principal-father in law too. Also most such films are about a college which is supposedly the best college of the country or city. Why do these filmmakers not care about ordinary colleges?

3)Award show formats

**Worst offenders:-**All commercial Bollywood award shows.

Its one thing that their results are completely flawed, lets forget about that fact for now. The biggest issue is how god damn irritating these award shows have become. These days award shows are basically about...

Homosexual references:

Michael McCleary: A Musician living in Mumbai, born in Chennai, worked in London, originally from New Zealand

(Published: February 2013)

Michael McCleary has brought to the table Khoya Khoya Chand, Hawa Hawai, Dhak Dhak, Fifi - Jata Kahan Hai Deewane, O Lal Meri making him quite a master at serving old wine in a new bottle.

McCleary is a rare face in Bollywood. Born in India but raised in New Zealand - his parents are from that country, and holding a British passport - McCleary made a full circle when five years ago, he shifted to Mumbai to work in the city's music industry.

He originally worked on television commercials, composing music, writing melodies. But that work brought another opportunity for him, to compose music for some of the Hindi cinema's leading indie filmmakers, names like Dibakar Banerjee and Bejoy Nambiar.

Along the way, McCleary produced and composed an album with 10 classic Hindi film songs - redone with today's voices and musical sensibilities. The Bartender, the album, was a critical and commercial success.

His initial film work - O Lal Meri song in David and Khoya Khoya Chand in Shaitan - is bringing him additional projects including some A-list projects.

McCleary, 43, spoke to Aseem Chhabra via Skype from his home in Mumbai.

Tell us about your work on Bejoy Nambiar's David. You did the background score as well as worked on a few songs.

It was two films in one. The Tamil version does not have the first story (the one starting Neil Nitin Mukesh). And the two stories that are common in the Hindi and Tamil versions are cut very differently. There are musical themes that I have used in both and a whole lot of extra music that I have added to the Hindi versions. Plus, I scored the films separately so it has been a lot of work.

I am really proud of the background score since there are some really cool things happening there.

I liked the score of your earlier film Shanghai. There was a certain quiet quality to the sound. Often, Hindi films have such a loud soundtrack, and all the characters have their own soundtracks going on.

What has it been like working with Bejoy and Dibakar Banerjee?

It is different working with every director. I am particularly connected with Dibakar (Banerjee, the director of Shanghai) musically speaking, and his sensibilities.

What you say is correct about a lot of films in Bollywood. The scores are there almost like prop cards for the audience. The filmmakers leave absolutely no doubt about how the audience should react. I try to avoid doing films, if that

Tabassum looks back on her career and talks about the stars she met along the way | 2014

If you were a Hindi film buff in the seventies and the eighties, there was one television show you would wait for every week... Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan, anchored by Tabassum, that aired on Doordarshan. It was a much awaited event in an era when the only form of televised entertainment was the Doordarshan channel.

You may have not known that she was a popular child actress in her time. You may have not known that, as a child, she was pampered by actors like Dilip Kumar, Meena Kumari, Nargis, Madhubala and Vyjayantimala.

But you would have definitely known that, every week, she would get a star - be it an actor, producer, director, music composer or singer - to sit across from her and share their secrets. Almost all the bigwigs of the Hindi film industry have shared an on-air tete-a-tete with her.

And she did it for 21 years, which is testament to how popular that show was. That's how you learnt of the generosity of Dara Singh. Of Manoj Kumar's passion for cooking. Of Amitabh Bachchan's selfless gesture.

In a long chat with Patcy N, the 70-year-old actress looks back on her career, and talks about the stars she met along the way.

[Bollywood] The Khanate of Bollywood: Why and how one of India's most prominent actors has escaped consequences for his crimes time and time again.

TW: Homicide, Abusive Relationships, Animal Death/Murder.

Thanks to /u/SharnaRanwan for the idea of the post.

Salman Khan is one of the premier actors in Bollywood, which in turn is one of the premier movie markets in the world. Anyone that has any sort of cursory knowledge of Bollywood will know of Khan, and for good reason - his movies are almost guaranteed to be smash hits at the box office, with him breaking opening week records time and time again. His movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan is the 3rd highest grossing Bollywood movie ever, and he also holds spot 8 and 11 on this list; basically, he's a big deal in Indian media. He's also one of its most controversial figures, as we'll soon discuss.

A STAR IS BORN

I think it's worth a look as to why Khan rose to such stardom, because it helps contextualize why he seems to be made of Teflon when it comes to either public or legal consequences ever sticking to him.

India is a much more socialist nation than many realize. One of the strongest allies of the Republic in it's earliest years was the USSR, and our first prime minister, PM Nehru, was a strong believer in socialism. Socialism's perceived necessity is easy to understand when you realize just how much of India languished in poverty after the colonial period and the social and economic strain of the partition. In these years, few entertainment luxuries were afforded to the poor of India, but chief among them was movies. Early theaters in the Indian republic were not repurposed opera houses or huge multi-theater cineplexes, but humble single-screen operations with cheap prices of entry, showing movies detailing the struggle of the everyman. However, India was not immune to the worldwide economic bust of the 70s, and it wasn't until the 90s, when India decided to take on a more capitalistic market, that things returned to the upswing. The theaters, and the topics of the movies themselves, became much more opulent, reflecting the newfound success of the Indian economy. But capitalism comes with capitalistic problems - namely, the widening of the wealth gap. Those same poor moviegoers remained poor when the urban rich thrived, and eventually became priced out of movie theaters that were screening movies they couldn't even relate to.

So how does Khan relate to this?

Salman Khan refused to go along wi

TIL: 1.Sridevi was engaged to Tennis Player Vijay Amritraj 2. She annulled her marriage with Mithun Chakraborty 3. She's rumoured to have had whopping 29 surgeries for her comeback in films.

All Bollywood fans mourned Sridevi’s tragic untimely demise this February. The highest earning Indian actress of her time, she was Bollywood’s first female Superstar carrying the movie on her own appeal without relying on a big name hero. Acting in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi language films, she had pan Indian appeal, and was a talented dancer as well as having great comedic timing. In a national poll, Sridevi was voted “India’s Greatest Actress in 100 Years.”

Her death as in her life drew in the crowds with hundreds of thousands of mourners lining Mumbai’s streets crying out “Sridevi Amar Rahe” (long live Sridevi) as her funeral cortege slowly traversed the six km. from Green Acres society where the family lived in an apartment in Lokhandwala Complex to the crematorium in Vile Parle. The funeral procession was headed by a tall, open truck covered in white flowers (her favourite colour) a massive portrait of Sridevi in the back. Her body draped in the national flag and encased Snow White like in a glass casket was done up with full make-up, wearing a ceremonial gold and maroon coloured Kanjeevaram sari with a large gold necklace and sindoor (vermilion) on her forehead to proclaim her suhaagan (married woman) status. The Kapoor men, Boney, Anil, Sanjay and Arjun travelled in the truck with the body. The Maharashtra government accorded full state honours for the funeral and there was a gun salute before the cremation. Her last rites were performed by her two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi, as Boney looked on with his head bent mournfully. Sridevi’s ashes are to be scattered at sea.

Let’s take a look back at her life, career and her relationship with her beloved Boney and her lovely girls.

Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in 1963 in Sivakasi, Madras State, to a Tamil lawyer, Ayyapan, and Rajeshwaramma, belonging to an upper caste Reddy family from Andhra Pradesh, Sridevi had a younger sister Srilatha. The family was strictly vegetarian and, till her marriage, Sridevi was always accompanied by her mother or by her sister on film sets. She started acting in Tamil films at only four years of age in 1967. In 1972, Sridevi made her first Bollywood movie as a child artist and, in 1975, she portrayed the heroine’s youngest sibling in the cult classic Julie.

Hitting puberty, Sridevi starred in her first leading role in a Tamil film at only 13 in 1976. In the following years, she followed it up with a number of films with South Indian Superstars, Ka

What is the scope for a foreigner looking to work in Indian cinema (any industry)?

Hello! I am a 22 yr old (female, non-Indian) from the US and I am wondering how realistic it would be for me to eventually try making some kind of career for myself in Indian films (in India and/or Indian projects abroad). I am an experienced video editor and practicing cinematographer. I have been interested in Indian cinema for 5 years now and my love for it keeps growing stronger (currently I'm really into Tamil and Malayalam films). I have been in contact with a couple prominent names from the south already but still haven't worked on an official project to really boost my portfolio yet. To practice video editing in my free time, I actually prefer to work with Indian content and have made some remixed compilations and movie trailers which have garnered a lot of views on YouTube. I am most familiar with Hindi, then Tamil. This is one of my passions that I cannot seem to shake, and I'm just wondering what my odds are, especially in a field that is highly comprised of men.

I am also just starting my career; I graduated from a 4-year video production and business program at university this year and I'm now on the search for corporate editing gigs to diversify my skills and start building up professional experience. I have other creative and professional aspirations here in the U.S. that I'm working towards as well. This is just me wondering what a long-term interest could develop into down the line, and how Indians feel about it.

I have been meaning to make a post about this but wasn't sure which subreddit (this or r/VideoEditing) would have the most knowledge to help me out. Any thoughts or insights would be much appreciated, especially from the female editors, filmmakers, content creators, etc. out there. :)

The idea of Satya came to RGV when he was sitting in Jhamu Sughand’s office and Sughand talked about receiving the call that his long time collaborator and partner Gulshan Kumar had been shot by the underworld. RGV wanted Vijay Tendulkar to bring the magic of his writing of “Ardh Satya” to the movie “Satya” but that was not to happen. He had committed to cast Manoj Bajpayee in a bigger role in his next movie after watching his talent in small roles in Bandit queen and Daud. Bajpayee had watched a short crime thriller called Auto Narayan written by Anurag Kashyap and recommended him to RGV to write the script of the movie. Anurag wanted to bring in Saurabh Shukla to help co-write the movie but Saurabh wanted to concentrate on acting and was not interested in writing. He went to RGV’s house to decline the offer but was surprised when RGV told him that he was looking at him for a role based on a bar owner he knew who was connected to the mob. He accepted both the iconic role of “Kallu Mama” and co-writer with Anurag Kashyap. That was how the core team of Satya came together.
Kashyap and Shukla wrote the story for the movie but a full script was never fully fleshed out till the movie was finally made and released. Most of the film was made as a result of improvisation by the actors based on Kashyap an

'I was given the dirty job of offering Amitabh Rs 5,000 for the entire film' - Tinnu Anand | 2013

Actor-director Tinnu Anand lives in Madh Island, far away from the madding crowd of Mumbai. The journey to his home is a long one but, once you get there, you fall in love with the place.

Rediff.com's Patcy N and photographer Nadisha Daniel were shown into his office which had pictures of Anand working with Satyajit Ray; obviously, these were deeply cherished memories. There were, however, no signs of any of the trophies he has won. 'I keep them out of the house to scare the crows,' he laughed, when asked about it.

Anand has acted in scores of movies. He has directed Amitabh Bachchan in films like Kaalia, Shahenshah, Main Azad Hoon and Major Saab.

Anand, in fact, is unwittingly responsible for have introduced the world to that superhouse of talent, Amitabh.

Before Anand started his directorial career, he closely assisted master filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Actor-filmmaker Tinnu Anand goes back in time to dig out lively facts from his life and career and reveal new secrets about the Hindi film industry...

Early years

My father, Inder Raj Anand, was a well-known writer in the film industry but he did not want me, or my younger brother Bittu, to enter this industry. He would say it was not the place for us.

One day, my younger brother who was studying in a school in Colaba (in South Mumbai) came home with the news that Nargis had married Sunil Dutt. This was pretty shocking news at that time. My father hated gossip and he thought this was just gossip. When he came to know it was true, he packed our bags and took us to Mayo College (a boys-only independent boarding school in Ajmer).

Later, when I told him I wanted to direct films, he was very upset. Ultimately, though, he saw that I didn't want to do anything else. So he sent me to the best school -- the Satyajit Ray school. Mr Ray and my father were friends, so my father asked him to take me under his wing.

In fact, my father gave me three choices. I also had the option of working with Raj Kapoor, who was very close to us. But he was too close; we're related and my father had written three scripts for him.

The third choice was Fellini (iconic Italian director Federico Fellini). I chose Fellini because I would get a chance to go to Italy. Fellini wrote to my father saying that I needed to learn Italian first.

I did not want to spend six long months learning Italian, so I chose Ray. He was starting a film in January, so I packed my bags and went to Kolkata.

#'Amitabh got the role of the

'I like being around people who do a lot of masti' - Tabu | 2015

Meera Deshmukh in Driysham. Ghazala Meer in Haider. Panna in Hu Tu Tu. Or even Nimmi in Maqbool. Tabassum Hashmi, or Tabu as we know her, is nothing like these characters.

In fact, Tabu's got an unexpected streak of humour that creeps up on you when you least expect it. She's not grim. Or serious.

She is, if one were to describe her in a movie-goer's term, the kind of person who'd like to sit in one of the front row seats of a movie theatre, chomping on popcorn and samosas, and whistling each time there was a dhamakedar moment on the screen, Tabu absolutely loves, loves, loves commercial cinema.

"I totally love it," she says yet again. "As a viewer, I will go and watch only commercial films. I think the films that I have done haven't been the drab, boring kind. Whether it was Chandni Bar or Astitva, I was very clear about choosing films that I knew had commercial elements in it."

When she picks up a script, she says, she wants to be "entertained. By this, I don't mean that I just want to laugh. Even when there is drama or suspense, or it is a musical film, it has to engage the audience."

Just like it did for Tabu when she was a child. "I grew up in the seventies and films for us were larger than life, masala entertainers," she laughs. "Films like Shaan, Sholay, Muqaddar Ka Sikander and so many others... they've been a part of my growing up years."

So, if she's signed on a film, you can be sure it's one she'd like to watch on the big screen.

"I work for myself," she says firmly. "I do a film because I would love to be a part of it but I also think from the audience's perspective. Our profession survives because of our audience. In the end, what matters is logon ko kaisa lagega (How did the audience like our work)?"

Was that why she agreed to be part of Drishyam?

Incidentally, it's not easy to get Tabu to sign on the dotted line, as the gaps in her career testify. Ask poor Vishal Bhardwaj.

"He chased me for six months for Haider," she says, a tad guiltily. And then giggles, "I agreed to do Drishyam instantly."

Was the lure of acting with her old friend, Ajay Devgn - or VD (short for his real name, Vishal Devgn; they've known each other since they were children) as she calls him -- after 18 years that convinced her? Or was it just the fact that it is the remake of a fantastic film, originally made by her "friends" in Malayalam (starring the incomparable Mohanlal) in 2013?

Not really, she says. "There is so much that my charact

Top 100 Indian Movies of All Time - Moondram Pirai

In the midst of the shock, controversy and fall out after his recently married young actress wife Shoba committed suicide, Balu Mahendra took inspiration to make one of his finest movies of all time “Moondram Pirai” (The Third Crescent) which he remade with most of the same stars in Hindi the very next year as “Sadma”.

Moondram Pirai (1982)
Directed by Balu Mahendra
Produced by T.G. Thyagarajan and G Saravanan
Starring - Kamal Hassan, Sridevi and Silk Smitha
Written by Balu Mahendra
Music by Ilaiyaraaja
Budget/Box Office - Not available
Awards - National Awards for Acting and Cinematography, Filmfare South Award for Direction and several Tamil Nadu State Awards
IMDB Rating - 8.6/10
My Rating - 9/10

It was a dark period for 41 year old Balu Mahendra when his newly married wife Shoba took her own life at the tender age of 17. Many in the media and film industry blamed him for her death. Balu wrote Moondram Pirai about a young girl with mental trauma who is cruelly snatched away from the movie’s hero based on his time and experience with Shoba. The movie received a lot of critical acclaim becoming a box office hit and cult classic which truly launched its actors Kamal Hassan and Sridevi into superstardom. The movie won national awards and Filmfare South Awards. Balu wanted to cast Sripriya for the movie but she declined due to personal reasons. That opened the doors for Sridevi who was transitioning from child artist into lead actress roles in the early 80s. Moondram Pirai and its Hindi remake Sadma gave her the required credibility during the year when she got launched in back to back Bollywood masala movies with Jeetendra. Even after her brilliant acting in Moondram Pirai, Balu didnt consider her as his first choice for his Hindi remake. He wanted to cast Dimple in Sadma but she wanted to focus on re-launching her career with Saagar which also featured Kamal Hassan. So Balu would return to Sridevi and rest is history.

The movie follows Bhagyalakshmi, a young woman played by Sridevi who gets retrograde amnesia after an accident. She regresses into the mental state of a child who calls herself Viji and gets kidnapped and sold to a brothel. There she meets Cheenu played by Kamal Hassan who is visiting Chennai and is brought to the brothel by his local friend. When Cheenu meets Bhagyalakshmi and gets to know about her situation, he decides to take her away from the brothel. He pays the madam

Long, shitty Thread Speculating Future DLC

I stole this conspiracy theory from /u/Acoasma

tl;dr: we're going to see more DLCs structured like Lords of the West: 2 new civs for existing architecture sets, a campaign for each, and a third campaign for a civ that doesn't have one, plus random maps, eye candy, and whatnot. The new civs will be the Lichthensteiners, Maltese Poodles, the Polonnaruwans, and your mom.

.

.

I know 1 DLC doesn't set a precedent but this is a really weird expansion. Consider the following...

1 - If Lords of the West is successful, they will make probably make more, similar DLCs

2 - They didn't introduce new architecture set; adding new civs and campaigns based on current sets is a cost effective way to create new content to sell.

3 - Sicilians and Burgundians are very specific civs and one can easily argue that they're already covered by existing civs (there are Burgundian Dukes in the Frank pool of AI names, and Sicily today is a part of Italy). Think about it like this: does this make sense as the last ever Expansion or the first of a new chain of expansions?

4 - Forgotten Empires Ltd has been following a sort of "road map" laid out by Ensemble Studios'.. FE loosely did an region based expansions on Africa and India, and The Forgotten expansion is almost like a Director's Cutof The Conquerors, but I guess not since a completely different Director took over? Anyway, oddly enough when choosing civs for The Conquerors, Sandy Peterson wanted to add civs to each existing architecture set. Maybe that's the next few miles in the "road map."

Anyway, I've been calling this shit since DE came out, I was calling it in spite of some of you fucks propagating the “devs said they won’t add any new civs” meme, and as a matter of fact I called it like the day before the DLC was announced. This thread is me calling the next few DLCs so I can win harder than I already was. I am 34 years old and live with my mother.

The list of civs in each architecture set is based on my opinion of likelihood.

What Shashi Kapoor’s Death Says about India’s Drinking Problem

It would be unfair to place the entire blame for alcoholism in India at Bollywood’s door. But there appears to be an undeniable complicity.

Veteran actor Shashi Kapoor was devastatingly handsome, charming, and urbane – a trailblazer who made a quantum leap from Bollywood to Western and parallel cinema, and whose crooked teeth bewitched millions with every imperfectly perfect smile.

He was also a raging alcoholic.

On 4 December 2017, he died at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai after initially being admitted for a “chest infection”.

The Shashi Kapoor who died was not that same strapping hero whom most remember in his films. For years, he endured a “long battle” with liver cirrhosis, as well as kidney failure.

Aseem Chhabra writes in the biography Shashi Kapoor: The Householder, The Star that Kapoor’s drinking problem began to spiral after the death of his wife Jennifer Kendal in 1984. The actor’s “domestic staff would bring refills as soon as his glass emptied out. He wouldn’t even have to ask… by the end of lunch, he would be quite sozzled.”

According to the biography, Kapoor drank up to a bottle of vodka per day.

Officially, Kapoor’s cause of death was cited as “liver cirrhosis” – a condition that leaves the organ incapable of purifying blood and more susceptible to subsequent illnesses.

I’m not sure what passes through most people’s minds when they hear the word “cirrhosis”. As a physician, I think immediately of the patients I have seen hospitalized with some of its worst consequences: liver cancer or life-threatening bleeding from engorged veins below the throat. When you’ve watched enough people vomit blood to their deaths, cirrhosis stops being an obscure medical term in gastroenterology and becomes a horrific cause of death.

Of course, none of this was mentioned in the numerous articles written in the wake of his passing, which focused more on his celebrated career than his sorry demise.

Alcohol abuse, plain and simple, is the most common cause of cirrhosis in India. The country adds 10 lakh new patients diagnosed with the disease every year, accounting for nearly one-fifth of the global death toll due to a largely preventable condition.

Yet Shashi Kapoor’s death wrought no battle cry to raise awareness of alcoholism. Deaths from suicide or lung cancer frequently spark national conversations about mental health or tobacco use respectively. Why is alcohol abuse so different?

Despite being no stranger to addiction behind the camera, Bollywo

Why is incel culture so normalized in India. Anywhere else they would be mocked. In India I didn't take it seriously because I thought it was just for memes they don't mean it, but I they are literally using rhetoric lines from incel memes as arguments against women.

It's from a popular tamil show Neeya Naana. It is also very common in movies. They potray as if women are there to woo them and rob them of their money and peace of mind. I respect if it is your personal preference not to indulge in love, but why go so far as to insult and generalize women; it tells me a lot about your judgemental abilities. Some men even go so far as to have quotes in their bedroom, back of their vehicles, whatsapp status. Dude I understand you had bad experiences with women, if it is a universal or a near universal experience, maybe the problem isn't with women, it is with you🤔.

Also don't you think it is embarrassing to talk anecdotally about women? Like that literally means you are dumb.

Let's talk about movies movies for a bit... They potray women as manipulative, mysterious, unachievable THINGS. Like whatt?!!! After a heartbreak the song goes like, "indha ponungaley...." ( these girls are like......) etcccccc. So many, i feel stupid to name them all.

Dude, I don't care what you think. But it is kind of annoying. Like this person reminds himself everyday not to get distracted by women. Ugh. Okay. But it really brings down are purpose to distract ya all. Whattt??? I completely respect if it is your personal preference not to indulge in love, stay focused on careers and goals...but insulting women is completely unnecessary.

Also what the fuck is wrong with female actresses?? I am not sure how the cinema industry works entirely, but obviously they have a choice over what movies they should act in?

Movies are the strongest form of media that reaches children easily. All these young little girls will look up to them as an inspiration. Which they clearly don't because of how badly they are portrayed. They will develop a sense of insecurity. The little girls just want to be adored and look pretty like these actresses. Which is so sad.

All these actresses are hypocrites. Talking about feminism off screen and accepting bad roles. I don't want to taint their image, but this issue must be brought to light. Actresses must give a deeper thought to what type of movies they should choose.

Master review

I know I'm bit late too the party but that doesn't mean I can't have fun. So let's begin.

In the beginning, they show flashback Bhavani. I don't know why but, he looked like Soori to me. The dubbing of flashback was done by real life/grown up VJS/Bhavani, which was cool to me. His acting was good, kudos to him. I just came to know that his real life name is mahendran. Great job, homie.

When it is revealed that Bhavani uses underaged juvenile criminals to do his dirty work and other crimes, it pretty much reminded me of VJ Antony's Thimiru pudichavan. I'm not saying he copied it, but it just reminded me about it.

When the movie timeline comes to present day, there's this scene where grownup Bhavani goes to confront the big shots of lorry sangam to whom he worked for these many days. The scene where he places bounty on them is the most chilling and cool scene. It was a thug life moment. His dialogue, "Ungalukku 2 minusham time tharen, mudinja yenna konnu pottu ungala kaapathikonga" was very epic. It will always be epic.

Then the story moves to Chennai and we get to see JD's life. Nothing much to say. Just typical cringey opening scene. Then nothing much to say, the movie went in a normal way. Not too special, not too bad.

JD is a depressed drunkard who is always drunk and drowsy. The portrayal of a person with depression is spot on. I mean, not all depressed people drink liquor like him but, one thing we get to notice is that he doesn't care much about his appearances. Untidy hair, beard, tucked out shirt, loose pant. This is how a depressed person like me would exist. Who doesn't give a shit about his appearances. Again, this might not fit to all depressed people but, it would fit to most depressed people like myself.

The scenes where JD adjusted his loose pant were cringey to me. I don't know about you all but, they were cringey. They deserve a special cringe mentioning.

After watching first 10 minutes of JD segment in first half, I thought to myself, "Maybe this movie would have been nice if Lokesh just kept the story around Bhavani alone. Instead of getting JD, the story would have been much better if it was let around Bhavani alone". But, I highly doubt that, then people would have called it Pudhupettai copy.

That doesn't mean the whole JD segment in first half was cringey. In fact, this movie is probably one of the movies with less cringe in VJ na's career. This had less cringe compared with Mersal, Bigil, Bairava, Theri. In fact, it wa

Bhoomi Review from Haashiraamaa Senju

#Bhoomi review 🔥💯

There are many fundamental flaws in this screenplay, the movie is filled with misinformation, wrong perception, unnecessary and unhealthy romaticizing of farming and this director actually believes in the illuminati 😂. So due to many requests, I'm going to write this one and go back to my cave where I'll continue to live off the grid. Let's have a detailed look at this film...

So the basic story is about a scientist who is also our protagonist who is trying to create life in Mars through ridiculous and trivial methods even for a fictional film, he is on a one month holiday before moving to Mars for the next 3 years, so he decides to go to his hometown which is a village in India , there due to various twists and turns , now the hero is the arch rival of the illuminati itself, so how does our hero fight the corporations, save farmers and make illuminati branch office head run away from India is the rest of the story, this wonderful motion picture written with a lot of love and inspiration from tAmIL 🅱️okkisham, MadAn gOwrI and jAgGi vAsUdeV oF iShA fOunDaTiOn.

There was only one question in my mind , did this director take some pills to induce Idiocracy in his and then wrote this script? Or was Jayam Ravi actually sleeping while he was listening to the script? This script is something someone would approve and appreciate , if farming turns them on, see that is actually a problem, I can visualize the director naked and having some fun sexy time with some organic fertilizer all over his body, he infact uses semi solid moist farming sand as lube for masturbation. Infact I think his fap material is the official government website for agriculture and farmers welfare, he actually has a difficult time choosing between different yojana schemes as fap material everyday. Because there is no way a sane person could have written something like this.

Y'all must have heard a lot about this movie by now but I have my own set of grievances with this film, starting from people who go to Mars taking a tablet to breathe carbon dioxide to survive for the time being to Jayam Ravi starting his own corporate company to fight the other corporate company 😂. Let's look at those now,

There was a sequence where Jayam Ravi finds out that, many left had driven car models are being manufactured in India and exported abroad, he is shocked to know that cars manufacturing is banned in Western countries (fake news), he is also taken aback knowing that mInImuM 5la

Indian Streaming platforms are pushing a value system change

Amazon, Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar commission original productions that are tailor made for the web platform. It is well known that they take full advantage of the lenient regulatory framework for web programming to push the envelope of acceptability when it comes to sexuality and violence.

Their favorite topics are pre-marital sex, gay lifestyle, casual hookups, public intoxication, infidelity, a lifestyle that worships money, dark crimes etc.

These topics often sell because of the taboo factor. They are obviously doing it to stand out in the market, and that is capitalism, but there's also a long term angle. They want an India which is full of individualists who need to entertain themselves with Netflix when they are desperate and lonely, which they will become if they are raised on such values.

Old marketing research from the 60s found that divorced families consume twice as much as families that stay together - two refrigerators, two TVs, two sofas etc.

You will not easily find programming that promotes sanskari values, or sanatani ideas of sacrifice for the greater good unless the Director / Storyteller is very strong willed and pushes back against the programming directives.

Look at the Russian federal law "for the Purpose of Protecting Children from Information Advocating for a Denial of Traditional Family Values". You can see Wikipedia calls it prominently the Gay Propaganda Law, including in the URL instead of by its official name.

> The Russian government's stated purpose for the law is to protect children from being exposed to homosexuality—content presenting homosexuality as being a norm in

Top 100 Indian Movies of All Time - Pariyerum Perumal

When lakhs of candidates sat for a government examination to become deputy collector and district superintendent of police in Tamil Nadu they were surprised to see a question related to the movie “Pariyerum Perumal”. Such was the impact of this movie on Tamil culture that its knowledge is considered essential in this fast changing world. Its creator Mari Selvaraj thanked his fans and the government and acknowledged that the aim of the movie was now fulfilled. When I watched the movie for the first time, I just couldn’t believe its level of brilliance, honesty, sheer brutality and golden heart. I had never seen anything like this movie before and probably will never see anything which will invoke similar visceral reactions again. Bimal Roy, Guru Dutt, Kubrick, Lynch, Cronenberg, Kurosawa, Bergman, Ray would have all been proud to share the universe with the maker of this masterpiece. It made be flinch, worry, cry, jump up with Joy and think about it for many weeks. Pariyerum Perumal’s scenes and imagery still haunt me.

Pariyerum Perumal (2018)
Directed by Mari Selvaraj
Produced by Pa Ranjith
Starring - Kathir, Anandhi and Yogi Babu
Written by Mari Selvaraj
Music by Santhosh Narayan
Budget/Box Office - INR 1.85 Crore/INR 5.5 Crore
Awards - Best Film at Filmfare South, Toulouse Film Festival and Norway Film Festival
IMDB Rating - 8.8/10
RT Rating - 87%
My Rating - 10/10

Mari Selvaraj grew up in a small village named Puliyankulam in Tamil Nadu which was afflicted with the same social issues and challenges like most villages of the state. This small kid from the village was now a writer director shooting his first feature in his village. The shooting would usually go on to late hours of the night with hundreds of villagers standing in as extras for the movie. No one knew what Mari was really making and almost everyone was in disbelief when they saw the hard hitting movie which emerged from this young kid. One of the most realistic and thought provoking movies ever made on casteism.

The movie begins with a loud slap to the face with a simple thought provoking quote "Caste and religion are against humanity” before it launches into a series of brutal moments which show the divide between humans due to caste. Pariyan AKA Pariyerum Perumal played perfectly by Kathir is a lower caste boy who is bathing his beloved hunting dog “Karuppi” in a small water hole with his friends and their dogs. When a

Top 100 Bollywood Movie Soundtracks Review - Umrao Jaan

One of India’s most famous actresses was born to an unwed mother and a father who would refuse to accept his paternity during her childhood. Both her parents were famous actors of the south, her mother was Telugu actress Pushpavalli and her father Tamil Actor Gemini Ganesan. She would grow up to become one of Bollywood's most independent actresses, dominate the late 70s with her leading man Amitabh and become the leading lady of several solo hits which she carried on her own. She would win a Padma Shri, a National award and 3 Filmfare awards for her contribution to cinema. Her name is Bhanurekha Ganesan or as she is popularly known as Rekha. The Jewel in her crown was a cult classic known as “Umrao Jaan”.

Writer-Producer-Director of this period musical drama Muzaffar Ali almost ran out of finances while making his magnum opus but still somehow managed to complete it. The movie is still remembered for Rekha’s epic performance, Asha Bhosle’s astonishing ghazals and Khayyam’s melodious music. The movie opened to a disappointing box office run but would manage to salvage itself after Rekha’s performance began winning accolades and applause across the nation. Rekha would perform brilliant dance routines for the movie despite not being a classically trained dancer. The heart of the movie is the poetic lyrics of Shahryar who was an acclaimed poet and head of the Urdu Department of Aligarh Muslim University. Umrao Jaan is his finest work. The soundtrack was originally planned to be composed by Jaidev with Lata Mangeshkar at the helm singing the ghazals but a dispute between them would force both to step away from the project. Khayyam and Asha Bhosle would enter and the rest is history. Asha who unlike her sister wasn't known for singing ghazals would win a national award for her amazing rendition of ghazals on this soundtrack.

The album begins with the Iconic “Dil Cheez Kya Hai Aap Meri Jaan Lijiye” which is one of Asha Bhosle best songs of all time. An amazing song about love and sacrifice brilliantly picturized on the Rekha’s courtesan character as she dances for her admirers. This song is the epitome of ghazals and allows Asha Bhosle to stand shoulder to shoulder with her elder sister Lata’s best Ghazals. She follows one amazing ghazal with another as “Justuju Jiski Thi” also wows audiences and ghazal aficionados as another majestic creation by Khayyam, Shahryar and Asha. These 2 songs are followed by traditional arrangement of “Kahi Ko Byahi Bides” by Jagjit
