Some r/synthesizers stereotypes

Saw another thread where someone asked why there's so many synth / modular performance videos with plants in them. It got me thinking and there really are a lot of recurring phrases and cliches in this sub. So I thought we can collect the best / most overused ones and have a laugh. :)
I'll start:

- plant besides synths (obviously)

- 'my little piece of heaven / spaceship / vibing corner / happy place (see it daily on r/MusicBattlestations)

- picture of a synth (preferably a Minilogue or Volca) sitting on it's own box, brand new 'look what I just bought'

- 'finally pulled the trigger on hardware, I'm already in love'

- performance video that is obviously rehearsed and finetuned to death - 'just a quick jam I came up with'

- 'these two synths go so well together, they really compliment each other' (coincidentally the only two synths OP owns)

- (I'm guilty of this myself) Just got this synth, what a beast! / 'Check out this bad boy!' (see also synthscalledbeasts.tumblr.com)

- several thousands of dollars worth of gear, sound treated room, high end table - 'just my little corner, nothing special'

or the opposite

- 'it's not pretty / much, but it's mine'

- 'ran (random synth) through a delay / reverb pedal - the sounds you can get out of this!!1' - yeah no shit ^^

- synth pic with cat / dog (again, I'm guilty myself here)

- performance video where dude is touching the knobw like they are red hot

What am I missing? I'm sure there's lots more. Don't mean to shit on anyone here, just have a good time. :)

Concerning Happy Synthesizer and a rant about the community

With the Holofes ended, I feel it is necessary to make this post concerning the community. I know that Happy Synthesizer is a song that the community considered the unofficial image song of Aloe. However, the attitude and constant mentioning of her whenever other talents singing it is just plain rude and disrespectful to them.

Take Noel and Flare's duet today, for example. It is pretty obvious that Noel isn't that good with her singing, as she admitted herself. In order to perform that along with Flare, it is no doubt that she spent a lot of time practice and attend lessons and work extremely hard to do that. Imagine all that effort only to have the only thing being mentioned is another talent and a past incident, and somehow this turned into a sad event every time even though it is supposed to be a happy one? Same thing happened with Pochi-sensei and Iofi's cover two months ago. I honestly expect better from this community.

Aloe's graduation is a sad thing to many people here. However, there is a time and place for everything, even for the "mourning" of her, for a lack of better words. That time and place is definitely not when other talents performing it.

Downvote this, ignore, report, or do whatever you want with this post. This is something that needed to be addressed to the community.

Making A Synthesizer Using Python

Hey everyone, I created a series of posts on coding a synthesizer using python.

There are three posts in the series:

  1. Oscillators, in this I go over a few simple oscillators such as sine, square, etc.
  2. Modulators, this one introduces modulators such as ADSR envelopes, LFOs.
  3. Controllers, finally shows how to hook up the components coded in the previous two posts to make a playable synth using MIDI.

If you aren't familiar with the above terms, it's alright, I go over them in the posts.

Here's a short (audio) clip of me playing the synth (please excuse my garbage playing skills).

Here's the repo containing the code.

ETF Portfolio Synthesizer

Hi,

I’ve examined etfdb and etfrc β€” and I’m open to trying or paying for the right service.

Is there a tool that can ingest my brokerages positions and then cross reference the holdings from each of those ETFs I have in my portfolio β€” and then produce an aggregate list of stocks I am exposed to and the total % of exposure I have per stock based on the overlap of ETFs I have invested in.

Thanks.

Future of synthesizers

Hi everyone! I would like to ask you, how do you see the future of sound synthesis in general? In what direction is it developing? In what direction do different companies take, and In what direction do manufacturers develop devices? is there any direction or things or innovations that could be seen? , Okay, now, for example, there is fashion modular and something for everyone according to their needs, but what does the future hold? what is the synth, sound synthesis or production method of the future? What issues could possibly be inferred from the future of synthesizers and all equipment related to sound production? What exactly would you wish for in the future? How do quantum computers and artificial intelligence potentially affect these things? are there any new forms of sound synthesis that may not yet be invented, or things that are already under development that are still too expensive for the consumer market?

Personally, first of all, I would like various cheaper "all in one" - synth / workstation solutions to delve into a certain kind of idea / synthesis / use, ie there would be more specialized solutions. Not happy (lead) such monsters that compete only for having as many different synthesis forms and features as possible, but for example a machine with both FM and wavetable syntheses + samples in awm2 style + drum machine + keyboard + effects + etc needed compactly. DAWLESS device. the device should also be customizable in some way, for example, for a higher level of machine music with its own version with related effects, etc., without me having a lot of vanities of which 10 percent is for my needs. i don't know if i could explain at all what i mean and my thought was silly because it didn't answer my questions. I would love to hear your views.

Is an oscilloscope helpful for learning to use synthesizers?

I'm new to synthesizers and I'm wondering if picking up an oscilloscope would be helpful for learning to use synthesizers? The only thing in my rack currently is a Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms SV-1B. I bought it with the intents of using it to learn the basics, then expanding from there when I figure out what else I want to add to my rack.

It's a great synth that I'm enjoying playing with, but sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. Like I'm just randomly twisting knobs and plugging in patch cables and finding neat new sounds, but it kind of feels like I'm just flailing blindly until I stumble upon something that sounds cool. I'm getting better at having an idea of what knobs I need to twist in certain situations. But I can't help but think it might be pretty helpful to actually be able to see the sound waves when I'm doing this?

It seems like a lot of YouTube tutorials/demos have their modules plugged into an oscilloscope, and it seems to help provide a lot of context to what specific functions are doing. Am I overselling the usefulness of an oscilloscope, or is it a good tool for learning?

If yes, the other problem is that pretty much all of the module oscilloscopes I've looked for seem to sold out from every corner of the internet. Is there any reason I would expressly want/need a module based oscilloscope, or is a free standing unit like a Rigol every bit as useful? Is an analog oscilloscope preferable to a digital one?
