I wish people were more respectful of supermarket workers.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been shoved out of the way when I’m trying to put something on the shelf or people rudely reaching over me instead of kindly asking me to step out of the way.

I’ve given up telling people to wear something on their face. They get incredibly confrontational. Policy is that I can’t serve them otherwise. We’ve been doing this for an entire year you’d think they would be more in tune with the times.

People throw their shopping down on the counter and then huff loudly ushering me to hurry up like I’m some personal butler.

Just the general lack of respect is huge. I’m a human being. Just because I’m behind a till it doesn’t make me anything less.

We need to have a serious discussion about the quality of jalapeΓ±os in American supermarkets.

JalapeΓ±os have become synonymous with "hot" when t comes to flavor descriptions in snack foods and restaurant items. But for some reason, buying fresh jalapeΓ±os in the supermarket is a complete crapshoot in terms of heat. I would estimate 75% of jalapeΓ±os I buy end up as mild as a bell pepper, and another 15% are only a little hot. Then there that 1 out of 10 peppers that's made out of napalm.

What has happened to jalapeΓ±os? Is there a trick to selecting the hot ones? Should we just abandon factory farmed jalapeΓ±os and go to homegrown? Or should we leave them to the dustbin of culinary history and focus more on the hundreds of other pepper varieties? Of course, that means in 59 years someone will complain about how weak the habaneros are.

What are your favourite supermarket "hidden gem" food items?

There are so many random products at the supermarket and you never know what's good or not - so let's start a discussion on some of our favourite hidden gems πŸ™‚

My ones are:

  • Pams spanakopita: actually made in Greece and really tasty! Found in the frozen food section
  • New Way sausage rolls with cheese: a kiwi classic with the lovely Alison Holst on the package (edit: I've been informed they have changed the packaging and removed Dame Holst's photo, very upsetting news)
  • Nature Valley salted caramel protein bars: kinda expensive but SO good
  • Tegel Louisiana style chicken tenders: I remember these were popular back in lockdown as a KFC substitute, super tasty
  • La Famiglia garlic bread: the absolute best garlic bread, drenched in butter
  • Graze crafty blends outback mix: tasty nut mix with mild bbq flavour, lasts for ages
  • Nongshim kimchi ramen: by far my favourite noodles, superior in every way to Maggi/indomie etc
  • Pams cheese fransky: best hot dogs ever but seem to have disappeared from supermarkets near me πŸ™„

Edit: just remembered another one, the Rana fresh pasta range! Especially the goat cheese and caramelised onion flavour 🀀 more expensive than the other ravioli/tortellini for sale but far superior, you can actually taste the filling 10/10

Edit 2: remembered another one, Much Moore salted caramel ice cream. SO good and comes in the big 2L tub

Do your supermarkets sell ready-to-eat sandwiches? What are some common fillings?

In the UK you can walk into any supermarket and pick up a mass-produced, pre-wrapped sandwich, with fillings like cheese and pickle/ prawn mayonnaise/ chicken and stuffing/ ham and cheese/ egg and cress/ chicken salad etc.

Is this a thing in the US too? What are your fillings like?
