EDIT: Thank you so much for welcoming us here and for all the wonderful questions!! Our AMA is officially wrapped now, though we'll be looking through the questions we might have missed and will get to as many as we can in the hours and days to come. We hope you enjoy Hades!
Hey /r/NintendoSwitch! We just launched our rogue-like dungeon crawler Hades, and we're still reeling from the amazing response! Thank you so much for playing and for all the kind words. As our first-ever Early Access project, this was a really different development process for us that resulted in our most highly acclaimed, fastest selling game yet. We gave Hades everything we've got, and now that we're finally starting to catch our breath, we wanted to invite you to fire away with any questions!
A bit about Supergiant Games: We're a small independent studio based in San Francisco and best known for our four games, Bastion (2011), Transistor (2014), Pyre (2017), and now Hades. The same seven members of the team who created Bastion in the living room of a house are all still together, and we've since grown to about 20 people in all, six of whom are here to answer your questions:
- u/SG_Amir: cofounder / studio director / designer
- u/SG_Gavin: cofounder / development director / engineer
- u/SG_Darren: audio director / composer
- u/SG_Logan: voice actor
- u/SG_Joanne: environment artist
- u/SG_Greg: creative director / writer / designer
Now, we invite you to ASK US ANYTHING about Hades, our past games, our studio, or an infinite number of other topics! We'll be taking questions from 10am PT till about 1pm PT. So, what's up?
Please consider a Hades announcer pack with them?
There are several Gods you can include in the announcer and mega kill pack to communicate with eachother.
Please consider & make it happen :) Instabuy for me.
He's bigger than every other character other than perhaps Lernie.
Fair warning, this is a wall of text. TL;DR: Pyre is so substantially different from other Supergiant games that it appeals to an audience who wants a completely different gameplay experience than the general Supergiant fanbase.
Before trying Pyre, I had never enjoyed a Supergiant game. I’ve tried to play Bastion several times, but never got very far into it. While I found the narration compelling and I enjoyed seeing the world form itself as I walked through it, I hated the combat.
Let me be clear that I almost always dislike combat in games. I generally regard fights as things I have to get through to access the story. So Bastion is far from unique in that I didn’t enjoy the combat. However, while I am often willing to just grit my teeth and push through combat to get to the parts of a game I enjoy, Bastion is so combat heavy that it outweighed the atmosphere and storytelling.
The aspect of combat that bothered me the most was the way enemies would respawn. After the initial wave of enemies spawns in a room, you kill them all, but you can’t leave the room yet! You have to wait for another wave of enemies to spawn, and then kill those too. I constantly wind up feeling discouraged and frustrated because I can’t actually tell how much progress I’m making in a given encounter, and after I kill everything I can see I don’t get any sort of immediate feedback, but I have to just wait around for a few seconds for the next stage to begin. And sure, a few seconds isn’t a long time, but we’re talking about video games here. The medium is built on near-immediate feedback based on player actions.
A few months ago I tried Supergiant’s newest game, which I won’t discuss in any detail because it’s still too new for this subreddit. I hadn’t remembered the name Supergiant from years ago when I played Bastion, and didn’t realize they were created by the same studio until after I started playing and found the combat frustratingly familiar.
Out of the four games Supergiant has released, at this point the only one I’ve never tried is Transistor. To my understanding Transistor is similarly combat-heavy to Bastion. From everything I’ve read about Supergiant’s games from people who enjoy playing them, combat is what Supergiant is known for. Other people like these combat systems that drive me crazy, and that’s why other people like Supergiant’s games and I don’t.
Except for Pyre.
Pyre is the odd man out from Supergiant. It’s substantially different from the other thre... keep reading on reddit ➡
I decided for myself that I'm probably just not the right kind of person to enjoy games by SuperGiant. However, the overwhelming praise that Hades gets is too much for me to ignore. Would I enjoy it? Is it significantly different from other SG games?
I personally enjoy games that are faster paced and every action is deliberate and not button-mashy or grindy. For example, I love love LOVE Shovel Knight and Cybershadow, Zelda games, etc. I don't really love huge skill trees or games revolving around "stats" where gaining experience does little more than make your damage numbers better.
I couldn't get into Bastion because I just found it too boring to stick with. The combat wasn't super interesting to me and I didn't care enough for the story to stick with it for more than a few levels. I tried to go back to it a couple times but I just couldn't do it.
Transistor was certainly more interesting to me, and I definitely stayed with it longer, but again I eventually dropped out of it because the pace just seemed too slow to me, and I'm starting to think I just don't care much for the isometric view for some reason. Couldn't tell you exactly why.
So for these reasons, I looked at Hades and decided it probably isn't for me. But like I said, everyone raves about Hades, so I'm trying to decide if it's worth a look. But I'm worried that it would be another "Binding of Isaac" for me, where I'm the outlier and just can not enjoy the game that much.
Can anyone make a case for or against this game for me?
So, I think we all love Hades right? Okay hear me out. How many collectors/lovers would like to have a physical edition of the game and even better a cool Collectors Edition( House of Hades Edition?) It can have the following:
Any ideas? Suggestions? AM I ASKING TOO MUCH? Please Supergiant I love Hades so so much that I would pay for all of this 😭 Thank you for your time and keep playing Hades :)
Has anyone ordered Hades Vinyl from Supergiant Games Shop? I did order this one, along with Transistor, Pyre and Bastion last year. For now, I didn't receive any update as for shipping, guess I'll have to be patient. Yet, I didn't receive digital downloads for Pyre and Transistor, only for Hades and Bastion so it seems a bit strange. My email is still unanswered since november by the way... Anyone got news or already ordered from them directly? (I'm in Europe).
Like it says in the title, have Supergiant games made art of the hidden aspect characters like Beowolf, Guan Yu etc
