Why are leftists mad over $600 when there are literally thousands of dollars per month in benefits.
This was a pipe dream a few months ago, and it now literally might be the most progressive agenda since the great society of the 60's.
Is this a marketing problem on behalf of the dems, and if so, how should they go about raising support for it in the future?
Me ( 21f) and bf(22m) live together. We are both in school full time. I work 30+ hours a week at a popular burrito joint and he does not work. His internship ended in August and he tried looking for a new job, but with everything going on and he is an engineering student he was really burnt out and I told him to just focus on school. He is so much happier and mentally sane now.
Bills are fine. We both get a refund from school and put a large chunk in the bills account. Then I put 300 and he puts 250 in the account a month. I pay more because my car note is included in our monthly bill total. He wanted it this way, so it’s a blessing cause basically he pays part of my note on a non-shared bill. I make $1k-1.2k a month after taxes.
The only bill I didn’t pay was car insurance. It’s $360 cause I had a wreck two years ago. My dad paid it but was recently laid off so now I pay it. Since then money has been way tighter and I am no longer saving. I was mentioning to my dad that I might apply for food stamps, cause due to the new Covid relief bill college students can qualify temporarily.
My mom heard and immediately started yelling at me for taking money from the government. She said I should be ashamed of my myself and to tell my bf to get a job if I needed help. She said it would bring shame to her if I did that and that my job gives a free meal per shift.
I snapped at her. I said I pay my taxes, it’s a shame I am broke! My bf pays his portion of the bills and really some of mine, so all I really got to cover is groceries. I told her to pay my bills or mind her fucking business.
She is acting like I stabbed her or something and keeps calling me an asshole who needs to respect her elders. My dad says he is sorry that I am struggling since now I have to pay my insurance, and I told him not to be. It’s my bills. He thinks I should apologize.
AITA for snapping at her? WIBTA if I applied for food stamps even though I can live without them? Sorry for mistakes. Typing on mobile and not the best at grammar.
Edit : my Bf was diagnosed with clinical depression in. August. His therapist agrees that If we can make it work he should not work at the moment.
Seeing so many people in here struggling. I want to make sure we all know about the new expanded access for SNAP.
Last month's relief bill expanded SNAP for 2021 in a couple of ways. First, there will be 15% higher max payments from January through June. Second and more important, the SNAP application process now does NOT count any federal unemployment income as part of an applicant's income.
This means they won't count the $300/wk stimulus, the one-time $600 payment, or the future amounts that end up being approved under Biden.
(They will count regular state unemployment income, but for many people that's still not enough income to prevent SNAP approval.)
The bill also newly opened up SNAP access for many college students (those who are eligible for work study and/or have a $0 family contribution on their FAFSA).
So please try again if you were denied last year – and don't be intimidated to apply for the first time! (I haven't applied recently but when I applied in the past, it was so much less intimidating than I expected, and such a relief to have a little help.) Don't be ashamed either – this money is here for you, it's just another program like unemployment, so please apply for it.
Get more info by searching for "snap benefits" and your state's name.
Please share this info with friends if they need it!
(Edited to add: here’s a CNBC story about this with links re. applying – https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/30/stimulus-bill-makes-food-stamps-more-generous-what-you-need-to-know.html )
i got denied for food stamps again because my income is just barely over the government requirements. if you ask me, it's bullsh*t. if i could afford food i wouldn't be applying for food stamps to begin with. i've been eating pb&j's for every meal for a week now. is anyone else in the same boat? aside from food pantrys where could I get something other than ramen until i can figure out if i can appeal this???????
