BRING ME TERRIBLE SPELLS AND I WILL TRY TO DEFEND THEM!

Let’s get the big fishes out of the room! I will comment on the 4 big and famous “trash tier spells”! After that, please bring me more, and I will try to answer and defend it!

While I don’t think I can defend one of them as a PC spell (a lot should know which one I’m talking about), I can do it for the other 3 ones!

1- MORDEKAINEN’S SWORD: This is, of course, the one I can’t truly defend! A spell that is outshined by literally every other damage concentration spell in the entire game (upcast to this level)! Now that we accept this as a fact, THIS SPELL IS AWESOME to be used by ANYONE but a PC! A powerful NPC should use it! It’s good to be used as a scroll! It’s good to be used by a powerful enemy! It’s good to be used by the shopkeeper! Ultimately, it’s a tool made for the DM, so it HAS his place in the game!

2- WITCH BOLT: This is a spell that I never understood why so many people label as “the worst”... Since ya know, it’s probably the best level 1 spell to use between level 1 and 5! It’s effectively a spell that, after a hit, can’t miss and last for 10 rounds with a single spell slot! After level 5, it is indeed pathetically weak, but before it, it is probably one of the best things a Wizard could do after burning his few last spell slots! Being a beginners tool doesn’t make it bad by any means!

3-TRUE STRIKE: We now got to the one most people would label as the “officially worst action one could take in a battle”! And yeah, that’s normally pretty much true! But you CAN use this thing to great effect! First and foremost, this is basically the best spell to use BEFORE a battle starts! Normally, attacking a foe would start the initiative rolls! But True Strike ISN’T a harmful or even threatening spell to your enemies, it has a range of SELF! So by no logic or rules the initiative would start if you used it while talking to the BBEG or the guards! Normally, this strategy sucks since most self targeted spells have a length of 1 minute, and time OUT of battle passes much faster (basically like reality), so you could essentially lose a spell slot or at least half of the duration out of pure bad timing! But true strike last only for 6 second and IS A CANTRIP! So you can essentially keep casting it every 6 seconds until the battle starts! I would love to see someone using an actual rule to prove this strategy won’t work! Also, if you have Elven Accuracy, the enemy has high AC, and you want to surely land a single targeted attack spell, True Strike IS

Bard spell casting focuses are dumb

Now before we get this discussion on it's way, my message is not "Bards shouldn't have spell casting focuses," my message is give them more versatile focuses.

So a number of times in many books, bard will be explained as someone casting magic through their art, whether it be through a lute, a dance, a song, a war rally, a joke, these things inspire others and the inspiration that comes from others fuels the magic a bard cast. And here is where the problem is, the class is explained that it casts spells through some kind of art, but apparently, the only acceptable art for spellcasting is musical instruments. What happens when I want to play a college of art bard who paints to cast spells? I'll tell you what happens, it doesn't happen because your RAW DM won't let you cast spells. Guess what, the stupid doesn't stop there. Apparently you require proficiency in the instrument to cast spells, despite the fact that when you cast spells, you don't even need to play the instrument, you just got to hold it. So I'm being told that if I want to play a songstress who is skilled only in her voice and cast only support spells, I require to know how to play an instrument in order to cast so said spells, but the instrument never needs to be used properly, as in my proficiency means nothing?!

I'm just gonna admit it now before I get comment flooded on this. I am fully aware that you can go talk to your DM and ask them to homebrew some spellcasitng focuses. It's just upsetting me that the books say in the descriptions that I can do this and this, but in reality, I can only be one thing, a musician. Some examples of what I might homebrew is a necklace that reacts to the wearer's singing, or bangles that react to the wearer's dancing.

TL;DR WotC said that bards can be anything they want to be, but WotC secretly already got every bard pre-enlisted for musician college and every bard just had ditch there dreams and go with it. Comment what homebrew spell casting focuses you guys have made to be a less cliche bard.

(Note - I suppose there is an exemption for valor and swords bards)

Summoner spell *Revive* shows up once again after being removed back in 2015

Revive icon shows doing damage to me in an Aram game

So i was playing my daily game to get win of the day, when i check the damage chart after being oneshot and i see this icon that looked familiar. 'i thought it used to look a little different but anyhow.'
It made me chuckle a little seeing a summoner spell that was removed back in 2015 appear in the game again.

I'm sure this is just some passive of some sort on Quinn that has gotten the wrong image name in the code, but thought it was a little fun, so wanted to share.

Rather than fixing bad spells, consider handing them out more easily or as quest rewards

Sometimes I think too much about how a bad spell can be fixed and get carried away, and although I think the homebrewing process is fun in of itself, I usually never use them because I don't want players to have a large document of house rules they must reference.

However, something I do like is to make bad spells more accessible instead. Here are some examples:

  1. Everyone thinks witch bolt sucks, so rather than change the rules for the spell (like increased damage, which forces players to reference a house rule document) it can be turned into a cantrip.
  2. Elemental Weapon is typically regarded as a worse version of magic weapon, but since they are so similar and fill the same niche (and are upcast at different spell levels) a PC that picks up one of the spells also gets the other for free.
  3. Finally (and this is main reason for the post), consider handing out "bad" spells as quest rewards. A ranger or bard will almost never spend a precious spell-known on longstrider but getting that free spell as a quest reward from a mage becomes fun and unique.

I am sure some of you will disagree with my examples, and feel free to do so (we can discuss in the comments), but hopefully you see the point I am trying to make. That rather than changing the rules for how a bad spell works there are less game-changing alternatives to still keep them in the game.

Thanks for reading!

What spells should every DM know about?

You know the situation. You have a great scenario planned. The players are going to love it. You ask them how they plan to accomplish the job... And the caster casts one spell that bypasses the entire session.

What PC spells should the DM watch out for, and what spells should NPCs use to protect themselves against common tricks?

Spells you copy the hell out of in "copy spells" theme decks. Which are your favorites?

For all you who play [[Kalamax, the Stormsire]], [[Riku of Two Reflections]], [[Malek, Izzet Paragon]], etc. Which spells are your favorites to copy? What are your favorite win cons?

Not counting extra turns or more spells that copy other spells. This play style is foreign to me and I'd love to learn more about it. Looking forward to your responces!

Battles in Mesoamerica often used religious artifacts and in some cases "Owl Men" who would cast magic onto the battle field. The Owl Men were even sent against Cortes. What exactly would these mystics do to cast their spells and how did it tie into the religion?

I know Mesoamerica had a very complex belief system regarding magic and it often used shapeshifting, but no sources tell me what exactly they did.

Magic practices in Europe and elsewhere are well documented with specific rituals and arcane words with iconography of witches with bubbling couldrons, but Mesoamerica is barren.

What did magic in Mesoamerica look like and how was it practiced?
