Following stay-at-home orders in California, sparrows in the Bay Area produced higher-quality songs compared with previous years. Anthropogenic noise levels dropped to those of the mid-1950s, spurring a rebound in song quality, which helps birds defend territory and attract mates. inverse.com/science/coron…

Southern California: Sparrow whose call is almost identical to that of a California Towhee (description in text).

I live in an apartment near a creek, with lots of old trees. Many species of birds come to my balcony, which has feeders and a couple of sources for water. At one point today, there was a single bird on my balcony: a small sparrow that looked a bit like a Song Sparrow, but paler than the ones I normally see here. It had streaking on its breast and a faint center spot, but no chestnut on its wings.

What really threw me was its call - it sounded like a California Towhee. There were no CALTs around, and the bird's call grew fainter as it flew away from my balcony, so I'm pretty sure it was the source of the call. (Unfortunately, I did not have a camera or binoculars within reach, and the bird took off quickly. I did hear the call several times, though.)

Any ideas on what it might have been? (If it comes back I'll try to get some photos.)
