The HBO saga runied it for him it seems. I read many interviews and he seems pissed at how HBO wrote their own stories and endings. I did a search on content relating to GOT and WOW resulting in posts from 2 years plus. Now my question to those who have invested the tens of hour reading "The song of since and fire".... Is the last book even relevant anymore? HBO screwed it up with the "Bran the Broken" for me.
Basically what the title says. Society exists because many of us can't make it on our own and we are better together. If you're having a hard time and need to take more than you give, society exists for you. Or at least that's how it is supposed to be. If everyone was at all times capable of supporting themselves without assistance, then we never would've evolved to be social animals and we'd still be off wandering the savannah alone.
Seriously it's so fucking annoying. They start stupid moral crusades about dumb culture war shit that affects almost nobody then progressives take the bait and we wind up spending all our time talking about pronouns, bathrooms, and marvel movies instead of the fact that people don't have healthcare, income inequality is wider than ever before, and our planet is literally fucking dying. All because some people are so obsessed with what their stupid fucking books have to say about morality that they'd rather talk about that than issues that actually matter. Wtf is wrong with people?
I like my little life. I like going for runs and working out at home. I like not commuting into work. I like having only my husband as my coworker. I like no meetings, no conferences, only phone calls. I like eating lunch at home. I like spending time in my immediate neighborhood. I like all the free time I have to do chores and practice piano. I like having weekends free to do all of that, plus read the newspaper. I like seeing friends outside in small groups occasionally.
I miss travel but I don’t want to go back to how things were, even though I barely see another soul anymore. Maybe something is wrong with me.
Quick clarifying edit: I didn’t say “I’m a hardcore feminist BUT”. I said “I’m a hardcore feminist AND”. All of what you are about to read IS feminism so don’t come at me in the comments saying I’m not a feminist or thanking me for not being like other feminists. This. Is. Feminism.
REEEEEEEEEE THESE THINGS FRUSTRATE ME
‼️‼️‼️VERY IMPORTANT EDIT‼️‼️‼️ I’m glad this blew up and that you guys are appreciating what I said and that it resonated with some of you. Please though, if you see a post about feminism that doesn’t mention men’s issues, give it the same attention and care. Feminism is for men too even if every post doesn’t talk about men’s issues. Give the same kind of support to women’s issues too when you see them ❤️
By saying psychedelic drugs - I mean 5HT2A receptor agonists: LSD and psilocybin.
These substances are orders of magnitude less harmful to the body than alcohol. In fact, in recreational doses they haven't ever been shown to possess have any poisonous qualities at all, meanwhile alcohol is found to be hepatotoxic and neurotoxic already at low recreational doses and is capable of destroying almost every single organ with chronic use.
Physical addiction of psychedelics is usually thought to be impossible, as use of these drugs result in immediate increased tolerance because of downregulation of serotonin receptors. It is impossible to binge these drugs longer than 3 days even when possessing ridiculous quantities of them. In the other hand - alcohol is known for particularly nasty physical addiction which makes withdrawals physically dangerous and can result in epileptic seizures, delirious states and even death.
Any real dependence of psychedelics is very rare. Even for an experienced user it always takes at least some courage to drop. Willingness to use drug is actually lower after consumption than before. Weekly use of psychedelics is said to be "heavy use", weekly use of alcohol among certain social groups is the norm and is not even seen as a cause of concern (even though it is). Alcohol often results in dependence, even in users who are vary of their alcohol consumption - up to 1/5 of all people who have tried alcohol become dependant on it one time or another.
Current scientific evidence show that use of psychedelics is less harmful psychologically than consumption of alcohol, as consumption of psychedelics does not seem to increase prevelance of any mental illness in studies which control for other factors. Alcohol equivalent of "bad-trip" causes just as bad outcomes, just because it doesn't seem as unpleasant to the user itself doesn't mean it is less bad.
Negative side-effects of psychedelics for the most part have equally negative side-effects in alcohol itself. Drug-induced psychosis has been found to also be induced by alcohol. For example - alcohol at high doses is capable on causing dangerous, violent and delirious states which in level of intoxication mimic or are even worse than comparable states induced by high doses of psychedelics. Violence under the influence of LSD is very rare but under the influence of alcohol it is relatively common.
My view did not get changed per se but still it made me look at the issue in a... keep reading on reddit ➡
This is probably the go to argument for anyone who can't justify some specific law and custom despite the harm it might bring but also wants to keep it for some reason.
The argument seems to ignore that the world can improve and in fact did, mainly because of people who didn't accept the status quo. That notion seems to be literal toxic defeatism and adds nothing to the discussion.
It was also used through history to justify various institutions (or support indifference to injustice), for instance back during the early 19th century many American politicians "considered slavery immoral but thought it couldn't be changed" leading them to accept (and sometimes even profit from) the institution just like someone who didn't think once about the morality of slavery.
The idea that we should strive towards perfection, even if the final goal is too idealistic, should be our guiding principle because that way we would be able to maximize human happiness and benefit others as much as we can.
EDIT: I noticed many people used counter-examples that discuss how those phrases can be useful in our daily life, I agree with that, that's why I said "are worthless IN discussions about changes in society and laws", doesn't mean they have no uses at all.
Pretty much what the title says; society acts like only white people can be racist. I’ve seen memes online that are directly racist towards white people. For example: the meme with the confused black man reading a newspaper, captioned “white people” under a description of a strange thing a white individual did/said.
I understand that this view sounds stuck up on the surface. But answer me this: do we solve racism with more racism? I don’t think so.
Racism should be solved by building up minorities’ rights and banding together so that everyone has equal opportunity, no matter their race. This won’t happen if there are casual jokes making fun of white people.
Imagine if the example I gave in the first paragraph had the roles switched. Imagine if it was a confused white man reading the newspaper and the meme was captioned “black people”. I have no doubts that this would not sit well at all with people.
Again, I ask you: Do we solve racism with more racism?
I am open to discussion and a change of view with solid reasoning and evidence.
Edit: Thanks for all of the different points of view. I think mine has changed, but it kind of got muddier instead of clearer. Please continue discussion; I love these conversations!
Edit 2: I am from America, sorry for not clarifying earlier.
