Is this a correct use of a semicolon?

If I have a sentence such as:

The sky is the biggest thing in the universe; therefore, your pants are not bigger than the sky.

In school I was taught that semicolons were used between two independent clauses, but I am not sure how the word "therefore" impacts the independentness of the 2nd clause.

Hey guys, When should you use a semicolon instead of a colon?

I grew up in an English speaking country but the use of a semicolon and colon still baffles me.

For example, which would be right in this context.

E.g:

The requested documents attached are as follows(:/;)

  • Document 1
  • Document 2
  • Document 3

In this case is ; or : appropriate?

Suttree's Solitary Semicolon

Had a banal but sort of bizarre revelation. Was reading Suttree and found a semicolon in it. One semicolon. Check it out yourself (2010, Picador ed. Pg. 487 lower half):

"... membership among the dead; all souls that ever were..."

McCarthy himself has talked of the "idiocy" of semicolons. I'm being pedantic, I know, but nonetheless it's bizarre. Out of 500+ pages of dense text there is only ONE use of the semicolon, and it appears to be very deliberate, so I think you can rule out it being a typo. Anyone have an idea as to why it's there, why McCarthy would leave it in at a time when he clearly thought semicolons to be pointless?

Are the semicolons necessary?

I noticed that the manual doesn't specify a terminator aka semicolon for any command except the form "for name in word" and select.

But I've been browsing some code and I see them used all over, I even tested a bunch with and without the semicolon just on the command line and there were no surprises, everything worked. I've been using them in my code, so was a bit puzzled when I read that section over again for the 500th time

Is this just a compatibility thing that people use them?

Semicolon Magazine

Hi guys. I don’t know how to write this without sounding all self promo-ey and horrible. But I’m gonna try.

So basically I’ve started a magazine called Semicolon Magazine where the whole idea is telling stories that wouldn’t normally be told (apparently that’s the exact same idea TD bank has... oops) and writing about things because we find them interesting. The description I gave it was β€œlike a more sophisticated version of fact books for kids” The reason I’m writing this is because printing is mad expensive and I’m quite young so this is sorta a lot of money + a big risk so I just wanted to know if

A) you guys are interested B) you have some ideas of where I could try and sell it lol cuz I don’t wanna lose 450 bucks

Thanks and I know I didn’t give much info so if you have questions I’m more than happy to answer them in true comments.

Also is the flair β€œlocal news” wrong? I mean it’s not news in itself but it is a local magazine that shares the news so idk

Thanks

Would it be better to use a period instead of the semicolon to make it two sentences?

It has made me much more conscious of my grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc. I am a native English speaker but my school stopped teaching grammar after grade 7. Am I understanding the use of semicolons in parentheses for "for expressions"?

I found this example code on https://booksites.artima.com/programming_in_scala_4ed/examples/html/ch07.html

def fileLines(file: java.io.File) =

scala.io.Source.fromFile(file).getLines().toArray

def grep(pattern: String) =

for (

file <- filesHere

if file.getName.endsWith(".scala");

line <- fileLines(file)

if line.trim.matches(pattern)

) println(s"$file: ${line.trim}")

Not 100 percent confident if I understand this correctly, but if we use parentheses as our braces for this function here, we have to have a semicolon at the end of every one line statement? Are the if expressions/filters part of the previous line? If I wanted to I could have multiple filters for the first for expression, I would not need semicolon till the last filter for the first for expression because all of them collectively are one line?

Is there a way to search values inside cells and removing specific data within semicolons inside that cell?

I have an excel file filled with data than I need to sift through. This is what it looks like:

CITY 6 T J 122069 M W 5 10 160 123 MAINSTR 040220 0430 CITY TR-467 TRF/CITY - S ROADWAY;AC/COMM -SPF;PWS/FTMFR
ROAD 4 F R 082488 F W 5 6 160 123 MAIN 040220 0430 ROAD FTR-656 GH/FULL - STOP;TRF/ ESC;AC/COMM-SPF

Is there any possible formula or use of VBA where it can locate and remove the instances of "TRF" + any other characters that come after until the semi-colon? For example:

In the cell containing: (TRF/CITY - S ROADWAY;AC/COMM -SPF;PWS/FTMFR)

Remove the "TRF/CITY - S ROADWAY" but leave the rest so the only thing left in that cell would be "AC/COMM -SPF;PWS/FTMFR"

Why they don't add look-ahead to the automatic semicolon insertion?

The current semicolon insertion enforces same-line bracket style. This style gets confusing and less readable when functions have long parameter list. For example (this piece of code uses nakama game server):

func (m *Match) MatchLoop(
	ctx context.Context,
	logger runtime.Logger,
	db *sql.DB,
	nk runtime.NakamaModule,
	dispatcher runtime.MatchDispatcher,
	tick int64,
	state interface{},
	messages []runtime.MatchData) interface{} {
	game := state.(*Game)
	if game.Phase == EndTurn {
		game.ProcessEndTurn()

		if game.Phase == EndGame {
			game.ProcessEndGame()
		} else {
			game.ResetGame()
			game.Phase = Playing
		}
	}
}

As you can see it's quite hard to distinguish where the method starts.

Compare it to this:

func (m *Match) MatchLoop(
	ctx context.Context,
	logger runtime.Logger,
	db *sql.DB,
	nk runtime.NakamaModule,
	dispatcher runtime.MatchDispatcher,

however, my program compiled and ran just fine when I followed the text and defined it as:

enum levels { LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH }

As an additional question that has to do with UML what does this mean " +Scrabble (s:String) " from my understanding this is what I have coded:

I believe in the book there was a story of people/fairies coming from a stream to the sea/a lake, with descriptions of the vegetation around them.

What was interesting was that just about every sentence contained a semicolon ";". I believe I looked up why this was, but I forgot if I ever found an answer.

A couple of years ago I downloaded an ebook reader on my android device, from F-Droid I think. And with the app there came this book as a file, perhaps to test the app. But since my memory of this is somewhat fuzzy, I may have also downloaded the book through the app, since it offered access to things like the Gutenberg project. However, I doubt this.

Now when I download this app (Cool Reader, I believe) there is another book of fairy tales attached. So it may have been another app, though I doubt that. Unfortunately I downloaded the app, and the book, 2 phones ago, so I don't have access to these files any longer.

Edit: The book was Irish Fairy Tales by James Stephens.
