OKAY. Buckle up. I have a ton of issues with Ronald after watching this episode. So much so that I am rewatching to break it down.
ยท Daniel begins by asking a very straightforward question: why canโt Ronald come to America? Ronald doesnโt answer, he gives a nonanswer that Daniel probably has gotten a hundred times. Ronald also blames Tiffany for keeping them apart.
ยท SO THEN Ronald makes it Danielโs responsibility to speak to his mother to convince her to take them to South Africa. Excuse me WHAT. This boy is nine! Iโm very glad Daniel has the emotional intelligence to be spoken to like this but at the same time theyโre parentifying him.
ยท Daniel says, very clearly, that he doesnโt want to move to South Africa because his family is in Maryland. Completely valid. Ronald replies that Daniel, Tiffany, and Carley are his family so OBVIOUSLY IF THE VISA IS DELINED THEY HAVE TO MOVE TO SOUTH AFTICA.
ยท Daniel obviously Daniel is petrified at this. He doesnโt believe it. As clearly as he can, he says no. Like eight times. He canโt move to South Africa, Daniel says, his family is here! Heโll miss his family!
ยท Daniel turns to really trying to figure out if heโs being lied to. He knows about the visa process. He asks, really they could only just visit for two or three months at a time?
ยท NO; Ronald says, YOU GUYS ARE MOVING HERE.
ยท โNo weโre not. Stop itโ God I love Daniel. Fuck, Iโll adopt him! Heโs clearly very upset and afraid. Heโs been to South Africa! Heโs seen his mother and Ronald together. Of course he doesnโt want to go back!
ยท Then we see Ronaldโs confessional. โAccording to meโ, Ronald says, โTiffany and the kids move to South Africaโ. ACCORDING TO ME: RONALD. NOT TO ANYONE ELSE? โI know Tiffany does not want to move hereโฆ but at the end of the dayโฆIโm not gonna keep doing this long distance relationship thing.โ Ronald, honey, as long as Tiffany is sending you money youโre doing to be doing this long distance relationship thing. Letโs not kid ourselves.
ยท โItโs not that bad, my boy.โ Barf. Take a shot every time you hear โmy boyโ and youโd regret it. Itโs so possessive, itโs not a pet name. Itโs addressing your property.
ยท โIโm not [joking]. Why do you think Iโm getting the place ready?โฆyou can ask [Mommy].โ
