There's a lot for project backers to unpack in Chris' latest Letter From The Chairman: news about Sq42, new development Roadmaps, Star Citizen backer and player numbers, sales revenue growth, and a year in review.
For this post I'd just like to focus on the letter's Squadron 42 news, which was originally estimated for a 2014 release and has now missed numerous release/milestone dates since, including a Q3 2020 internal beta.
The Squadron 42 section from Chris' letter, with some sections bolded to highlight key points:
> #Squadron 42
> The new Roadmap is not meant to give people an early estimate on when Squadron 42 will be completed. We made a conscious decision to only show the Squadron 42 work concurrently with the Star Citizen work over the Roadmap’s four-quarter window. This is because it is too early to discuss release or finish dates on Squadron 42.
> As I said earlier this year, Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date, but instead only when all the technology and content is finished, the game is polished, and it plays great. I am not willing to compromise the development of a game I believe in with all my heart and soul, and I feel it would be a huge disservice to all the team members that have poured so much love and hard work into Squadron 42 if we rushed it out or cut corners to put it in the hands of everyone who is clamoring for it. Over the past few years, I’ve seen more than a few eagerly awaited titles release before they were bug free and fully polished. This holiday season is no exception. This is just another reminder to me of why I am so lucky to have such a supportive community, as well as a development model that is funded by people that care about the best game possible, and not about making their quarterly numbers or the big holiday shopping season.
> For most games it is typical to not even announce the project until about 12 months out and only start building awareness with marketing 6 months before launch. The issues with showing gameplay, locations or assets on a narratively driven game this early are twofold. First, a marketing campaign can only last so long and second, there is only so much of the gameplay that we can show before release as we want you to experience a really engrossing story. If we show the non-spoiler gameplay now, that’s prime footage and gamepla... keep reading on reddit ➡
There is indisputable political and historical propaganda in resources printed in the US, intended for non-native English speakers. This propaganda is clearly intended to support conservative ideology. Some of it is a direct pipeline to white supremacy.
Here are a few examples from just one TOEFL guide, Bruce Stirling's, "Speaking and Writing Strategies for the TOEFL IBT" (Los Angeles, CA: Nova Press, 2009).
The American Civil War
Here’s an excerpt from a reading passage about the American Civil War.
>The Civil War started when the South withdrew from the Union. The South accused the federal government of being a dictatorship intent on denying the southern states the right to set their own laws, particularly in regard to the right to own slaves.
Although this says the idea of the federal government being dictatorial over states’ rights was an accusation by the South, nothing in the entire reading passage ever contradicts or even qualifies this accusation, leaving the impression that the charge is justified. Additionally, although it mentions the issue of slavery, it places this right at the end of the sentence, as simply one example of states’ rights being contested.
This paragraph reinforces the false historical narrative of a war of Northern Aggression over the issue of states’ rights, a narrative which started during the Civil War period, and persists to this day. There is no mention in the entire reading passage, of the historical record of Southern spokesmen insisting the motivation for secession was the preservation of slavery.
Robert E. Lee
Here’s an excerpt from a reading passage about Robert E. Lee, who fought on the side of the South in the American Civil War.
>Of all the generals in the American Civil War, one stands above all the rest: Robert E. Lee. Lee defeated the Union army and established his reputation as a general equal to Napoleon. Time and again, Lee defeated the much larger Union Army. At war’s end, many in the North wanted Lee hung for treason. However, Lee never stood trial. Lincoln wanted reconciliation not revenge.
This is only an excerpt from several paragraphs describing Lee in an extremely positive light, praising his military skill and representing him as an honorable man fighting courageously for his state.
The last few sentences have obviously been written with the objective of clearing Lee of any hint of culpability for being on the wrong side of history (a... keep reading on reddit ➡
There is perhaps no more significant company that leverages YouTube as a media platform to disseminate politically biased propaganda to both children and adults then Prager U. Given that the company was funded by fracking billionaires the Wilkes Brothers and founded by conservative talk host Dennis Prager, it is unsurprising Prager U frames its historical videos as fighting “left-wing” historical revisionism by displaying the truth. The company has a financial interest to disseminate non-factual historical analyses that legitimizes the power and wealth of the people and organizations who support the company. Prager U has created many videos that glorify imperialism and Gilded Age capitalism in order to justify existing political and socioeconomic institutions and condemn attempts to transform or eliminate them.
“Who Was Robert E. Lee” is one of those videos.
In response to Confederate statues being targeted during the George Floyd and other police brutality protests, Prager U released this video attempting to justify preserving Robert E. Lee’s statue. This post will critique the specific “facts” presented by the company, the implications behind the statements in this video and contextualize this video within American pseudohistorical revisionism.
Note: Prager U has made the video private, likely after viewers reacted negatively to it. Here’s a link to one YouTuber who reviewed the entire video:
>Statues of great historical figures like Robert E. Lee are being torn down across America”. Here are some facts about Lee that remind us why his statue should remain.
Keep these two sentences in mind during the rest of the review; the “facts” being presented by Prager U are supposed to show why Lee’s statue should be preserved.
>Robert E. Lee was connected to George Washington through his father, “Light Horse Harry” Lee, Washington’s cavalry commander and his wife-Martha Washington’s great-granddaughter. Lee’s home at Arlington was just ten miles from Washington’s home at Mount Vernon. Today, it is the site of Arlington Memorial Cemetery.
The first assemblage of factoids justifying keeping Robert E. Lee’s statues admires Lee’s family connections with George Washington. Note that Prager U does not begin its “depiction” of Lee with any of his personal accomplishments, but rather his father’s military career and the fact Lee married into the family of a wealthy plantation owner.^2 The company... keep reading on reddit ➡
