I finally did it. I made a post on my Facebook about pit bulls. I've been so nervous to share what I've learned here with my friends, but I've been wanting to because pit bulls scare the ever living bejeezus out of me and I don't think enough people really know just how dangerous they can be. So I bit the bullet and talked about it today.
And it went well! Not everyone agreed with me 100% but we had a discussion and it was good. No name calling, threats, claims of racism, etc. But ya know...I just have to focus on the one negative lol. One person was what I would call willfully ignorant. They would just. not. listen. to anything I said and refused to accept that a pit bull has a potential to be dangerous.
That's right, I didn't say I think all pit bulls need to be shot or banned outright, or that every last one is a vicious killer. I said what I honestly believe: only responsible owners who understands what the breed is capable of, and will ensure their dog never harms anyone, should keep them. That would severely reduce the number of people who have them, and I personally am okay with that compromise.
I am a reptile fan, I liken this to keepers of venomous snakes. I can safely say anyone who owns a deadly snake will never tell you that they make good pets or that the average keeper should have them. And those that DO meet the qualifications absolutely should be allowed to have their snakes. I've seen some great educational work done by them, and I've learned so much about their behavior and have come to appreciate what wonders of nature they are. And of course, just how scary that venom is (which is the most important part!) So I can be okay with the idea of someone with that mindset owning a pit bull, because you know they'd never give that dog the opportunity to take another life. That's what I want more than anything: no more victims of pit bull attacks.
Anyway, my Facebook post today was (I thought) eloquent and well sourced. I even included links to videos of how these dogs behave when in kill mode so there was no denying. I did not talk about how I think the number of people who own them needs to go way down- that would have been too many topics for one post. Just focused more on "if you're going to own a pitbull you need to be aware of this killing thing they do" But this one person y'all... she just wasn't having it. And like, WHY. Why only pit bulls? Why can you point out that literally ANY other dangerous animal is indeed dangerous without... keep reading on reddit ➡

I love reptiles and insects and I always have. I get the idea behind why someone would be scared of them. But realistically, if you took the time to think about whether these things are worth being so terrified over, you’d realize that it’s completely irrational (in most cases).
I have a friend who freaks out at the THOUGHT of snakes. I have two corn snakes and even if they were to bite you, it does less damage and it’s less painful than if a dog or cat bit you.
Edit: I understand the reasoning behind why. I don’t think these people are stupid. And I’m referring to when people are so scared they scream and cry and run away, not just lightly scared.
