Despite some complaints about the massive number of reprints in 2020, I think this needs to become the new normal to meet demand for EDH

MtG, and EDH in particular, grow in popularity every year, and have been thriving in the past few years in particular. With that newfound popularity comes new fans, and with new fans comes unprecedented demand, and with unprecedented demand (and for now an economic bubble due to Covid) you get skyrocketing prices.

WotC is absolutely incentivized to reprint cards across the board, and do so in such a way that is palatable to their fanbase, new and old.

If reprints are too inaccessible then little is accomplished, the prices don't budge and players that don't already own copies of the cards aren't really aided. This can be seen in products like Jumpstart (a great product that never met demand), and Commander Collection Green, products that barely did anything to get their included reprints into players hands. Jumpstart was always in such hot demand that it was never easy to find, and pulling quality reprints was a longshot in the first place. Commander Collection Green included a great lineup of cards, but due to the lack of an MSRP and the market being what it is, as well as limited supply, you were basically spending the same on the singles or the entire sealed product either way. While major cards like Sylvan Library did dip in price (thanks to previously unprecedented high prices), they were still quite expensive even with the reprint, and the product was going for $60+ minimum (for 8 cards) which is not friendly to most of the playerbase.

There is grumbling from some if cards are reprinted too reckless and the value is hit too heavily, and it is true that MtG is a collectible product and it is in the games interest if cards retain at least some value, otherwise investing in it will feel like a waste to many. There is a happy medium. In the short term prices should take a hit due to an influx of supply, but long term if the demand if organic then prices will stabilize and creep back up. Sol Ring is a $3 despite nearly endless reprints. Mana Crypt was reprinted in 2 sets in the past 14 months but is still a $90+ card. Some cards are valuable due only to supply constraints, and a reprint will permanently diminish their value, but heavily played cards need regular reprints or they become inaccessible barriers of entry to playing EDH on a level playing field with pre-existing players. MtG cards are not purely collectible in nature, they are at least in equal respect game pieces integral to playing the game. If people cannot get the game pieces they need t

2021 Challenger decks focusing on Standard announced, Prediction: One of them includes a Great Henge reprint

5 2021 Challenger deck preorders were leaked on a Japanese retailing website (now taken down/disabled I believe), and considering these are 60 card Standard decks with 15 card sideboard, the odds of a Great Henge reprint is very likely. It's been the most played card in Standard (MTGGoldfish format % chart) for like, 6 months at this point, and it's a very in-demand Mythic.

Knowing Wizards, in their usual infinite wisdom, I'm willing to bet that they include a Great Henge reprint long overdue and relatively close to the end of its time in Standard, where it sees the most play besides EDH.

Rogues is a sure-fire bet for one of the decks, but if WotC decides to include one or both of Gruul Adventures and some Food variant deck, both run 3 Great Henge in typical lists and either one of the Challenger deck variants could contain 1 Great Henge.

However likely a reprint of The Great Henge may be, a reprint would absolutely crater this chase Mythic's value.

Keep an eye out for word on the Challenger 2021 decks. If these decks don't include a copy of the Great Henge, the card likely won't be reprinted for some time due to its power/plane-specific identity.

[OC] Complexity Creep - 1st in an article series with increasing measures of complexity. Accounting for hidden complexity & reprints, mono-blue has the most hidden complexity (2ed mono-white). Mono-white is the least complex color; this is a more recent trend & it occurs more than random chance.

A Basic Metric of Complexity Creep

TL;DR

  • Mono-white is…. the least complex color. Despite having the second most β€œhidden complexity” (excluded reminder text), even when added in mono-white is still the least complex.
  • Mono-white’s missing complexity is not made up with an increase in keywords.
  • Mono-white appears as the least complex mono color per set more than random chance, especially in recent sets.
  • The missing complexity missing from mono-white is greater than the total complexity mDFCs as a whole add to a set.

Nosh-Sized Nuance

  • This definition of complexity is painting in very broad strokes. Thus while its use is limited, if anything stands out as fishy at this resolution it might warrant further investigation. Indeed mono-white’s abysmal complexity is curious.
  • Complexity is not equal to power (by this definition and likely any other). A five word, one-mana instant with oracle text β€œTarget player wins the game.” is objectively powerful and not complex.
  • Mono-white’s missing complexity is more extreme recently (β‰ˆM19 forward) but also a historic issue (starting β‰ˆ ONS to ALA).
  • Complexity of a group of cards is based on an average. The number of mDFCs in a set is small comparatively (hence while the comparison is provocative, it is not necessarily informative).

What's to come?

  • This is the first in a series of articles exploring Complexity Creep. It starts with the metric used to hype up Theros Beyond Death (good enough to drum up sales, good enough to scrutinize). Here we add two adjustments

    1. counting mDFCs either "as one" (all faces count towards one card) or individually (measuring the complexity creep, per face).
    2. estimating the maximum reminder text. While "entrenched" players know what flying is, it is still complexity.
  • Future articles further explores two facets from this primary.

    1. Where (if anywhere) is white's missing complexity?
    2. Applying increasingly sophisticated measures of complexity.

[KHM] Reprints and Rarity Shifts

With the full spoiler released, it's time I do my normal Reprints and Rarity Shifts list. First, as always, a few definitions:

  • Reprint - A card is a reprint if it has the same name, game text, and rarity of the last time it was printed in a booster release.
  • Rarity Shift - A card is a rarity shift if it is a reprint but at a different rarity from the last time it was printed in a booster release.
  • Functional Reprint - A card is a functional reprint if it has the same game text, exact mana cost, and card type (and power/toughness if a creature) as another card, but with a different name. Do note that creature type does not matter for this, even if we are in an environment with Tribal bonuses.
  • Color Shift - A card is a color shift if it is a functional reprint but with all mana symbols changed to a different color.

MaRo's responses to community questions on Commander Legends: Including Hullbreacher colors, Characters selection, reprints and more.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/odds-ends-commander-legends-2020-11-30

Highlights:

Hullbreacher's color:

>The short answer is that Hullbreacher is a blue card because it's an effect in blue's slice of the pie. Blue steals other people's draws, sometimes turning them into other resources. White can tax the draws or turn a personal draw into a draw for you and that player (or possibly all players), but it doesn't do what Hullbreacher is doing. Any effect that is normally in one color would be more beneficial in a second color that normally doesn't do it. A counterspell, for instance, would be much more useful to red than blue as red doesn't do counterspells (barring a few earlyΒ MagicΒ cards). That doesn't mean we're supposed to move effects out of the color that they're in.

White Support:

>I think the main issue is a misunderstanding of what the problem is and how R&D is choosing to help solve it. Let's start with the problem. The Commander format was created as a fun, casualΒ MagicΒ variant. It wasn't designed to be the main way people played the game, so we made decisions that maximized letting it be what it wanted to be. Those decisions majorly changed the dynamics of how the game plays out. The life total is different. The number of players is different. The strengths of various abilities are different. How players interact is different. But it was all played with cards and a color pie not designed for the format. Imagine, for example, if there was a new format called Rush where every player started with 10 life. White would be pretty good in that format, whereas blue would really suffer. As Commander has become more popular, we've had to come to terms with how to adapt the color pie to help it in Commander. The good news is the color pie is constantly evolving. There are always opportunities to push it in the direction that the game is evolving. However, the key to doing this correctly is to find ways to change a color that play into its core philosophy. A good example is how we handled red in dealing with Commander. Red needed more card draw, so we created "impulsive draw" (exiling cards that you can cast from exile for the turn), a way for red to get cards that was in-flavor for red. Notice that we didn't just give red an ability from another color. We explored new space to solve the problem in an organically red way. That's what we're currently up to in white. I need to stress two things. First, we change thi

A new Marvel reprint another possible hint at a certain superteam appearing in the Loki show?

Today Marvel's solicits for April were released, and this caught my eye. A special reprint issue collecting the early appearances of the Squadron Supreme has been announced. Now, it could be nothing, but Marvel has a habit of doing stuff like this for lesser known characters and properties that are about to be making their debut in the MCU or on TV, for instance Black Knight, which was one of the things that prompted early speculation he'd be joining the MCU after Endgame.

Last year, there were rumors that Squadron Supreme would be appearing in Loki, but I don't believe we ever heard anything more about it. I'm wondering if this new collection is a further hint we'll be seeing them there.

PSA: Gnarkill/Gnarkey reprints from Jess on eBay

Just wanted to give a heads up to those who might care about this sort of thing, but if you're buying supposed NOS Gnarkill stuff from Jess on eBay, it's almost 100% confirmed that you're buying reprints. There was some rumbling in the subreddit about a year ago as to whether or not they were legit copies so I thought I'd weigh in after buying the Gnarkill/Gnarkey/Unkle Matt/Otimen 4-pack from Jess a couple weeks ago.

The Gnarkey is the most obvious - the new ones are black, not gold, and the "date modified" on all files is from January 2021. The tracks are also all in iTunes-converted MP3 192, not lossless WAV like the original. The new Gnarkey does not include the Skeletor vs. Beastman video in the B-SIDES folder.

The Gnarkill digipak has the same design, the proper ISRC on the back, but the disc is completely different. There is no DISCHOUNDS branding on the runout, and the matrix for mine is ZIEHA26A 1227080411 A32 which is not even close to the known legit copies of the album.

I'm sure most people don't mind and it's nice to support the band directly, but I'm posting this as a PSA just as a heads up to completely ignore anything that Jess says about these being "old copies found in the garage" or whatever he was saying the last time a batch of these went up for sale. He's reprinting a handful of them every so often.

fwiw though the Otimen Recording Hell that came in the same pack seems to be authentic, shrink wrap is legit, getting proper CRCs when ripping, no evidence to suggest it's a reprint. but the Gnarkill stuff is pretty blatant

Which reprints do you wish to see in Modern Horizons 2 that are already Modern legal?

Modern Horizons 2 will bring a lot of new cards to Modern and enemy fetchlands will see a reprint. When WOTC reprints fetches, there will propably be other reprints of cards already in the modern format.

I would like to know, which cards that are already in the Modern format do need a reprint the most and which cards would you like to see reprinted for the health of the format and the growth and happiness of the Modern community.

I would love to see [[Cavern of Souls]] and [[Aether Vial]] reprinted because, even though I am not a big fan of tribal decks myself, many people and especially kitchen table players are. Tribal decks are usually very cheap compared to most modern decks except those 2 cards and I think it would give some people more interest and better access to the format.
