My Redbreast 21 story (memoirs of a pathetic drunkard)

A little light hearted story about my Fri eve just gone. a while back I treated myself to a bottle of redbreast 21. I loved the redbreast 12 and the 15 also. so I knew the 21 would be lovely. out of my usual price range but it was Xmas coming up so I thought I'd treat myself. over Xmas, New year and January I drank a little more than usual ending up finishing off all of my other bottles. ended up only having the RB 21 left. instead of buying more cheaper bottles it became my everyday dram. it dwindled down to being almost gone. But I saved 1 last drink out of it.last week I ordered another bottle of the 12 (my usual more financially appropriate everyday dram)

which brings me to Fri eve, did some nice bbq food for the family, we all sat round enjoying smoked pork ribs and minted lamb! me and the wife having a couple of drinks. the kids clear off to their rooms we have a few more drinks, her on the gin, me on my new bottle of 12. after a good few, I decide I'm going to enjoy my last dram I have saved from the 21 bottle.

pour it out, let it sit for a while, still chatting away while I finish my 12. wife asks me something or other, so I go to grab my phone to show her. (can't really rmbr what it was, as I was quite merry by then ) Instead of grabbing my phone, I knock the 21 dram I was saving right over!

shit shit shit shit I say, while she tries not to laugh. then I proceed to try and swoosh what was left of the spilled drink with a bankcard off of the table and into the glass like some sort of drunken, saddo, pathetic whiskey junkie!!

we both laugh about it. end up drinking more into the early hours. go to bed. wake up with a super hangover, feeling awful and groggy with an email from master of malt thanking me for my purchase of another bottle of RB 21.

I can't even remember ordering it, although il say one thing.

I only felt a tiny bit of guilt for 1 second πŸ₯ƒ

slainte to all πŸ₯ƒ

Green Spot er Redbreast 12?

Hello there. So, the title sums up my situation pretty well.

I am looking to buy a friendly whisk(e)y. I have found Green Spot and Redbreast 12, which I have heard quite nice things about. I am relatively new to whisk(e)y, but I do own a bottle of Jameson (standard budget version) and a bottle of Jameson Crested. I much prefer the Jameson Crested, but neither of them really stand out to me.

If you have any recommendations to freindly whisk(e)ys that don't break the bank (non-smokey), then I would love to hear them! I like Glenfiddich 15 Solera Reserve, but not the 18 or 12 if that helps. Fruity and sweet flavours are nice, not too much a fan of the "malt mustiness" or savory flavours. Thanks ;)

to the small robin redbreast that has flown into my window

I am truly sorry my window was an obstacle in the amazing journey you were having. My cat and I often watch you flying around in our garden but this morning was different. You probably noticed I have been at home very often because of the pandemic. At least that's what I think... Your specie is always curious and adventurious, right?

I was just about to send an email while sipping tea when I heard a dull sound in the other room. Sadly I knew exactly what that sound was. I rushed outside and started looking near the windows. You were sitting there with your little beak open and I can imagine you had a headache too. When I was a child, my father told me I had to pet your tiny head with my finger and turn off the 'lights' by holding my hand over your eyes, just like we, humans, do when we have migraine. Not sure if you like it; I wish you could warble me words. Your heart was beating so fast but I guess you started trusting me. I blew hot air to keep you warm because it was freezing. Fifteen minutes passed and I noticed you were moving a bit in my hand. Your precious black eyes were staring at me as if you were trying to thank me for my warm hands and the help. Were you ready to go? I opened my hands and held you up just like Rafiki did in the Lion King movie. You flew away, free as a bird.

You're the cutest bird in my garden and I am truly happy you survived.

Hot take: Redbreast isn't that great. There are countless other Irish whiskies that are better and most of them are cheaper.

Over Christmas my drinking has increased massively and I've tried as many different whiskies as I can, and I thought back to a few months ago when I finally decided to bite the bullet and spend €63 on a bottle of Redbreast 12. I had fully embraced all the hype surrounding it and expected it to be the best thing I will ever put in my mouth. So I poured some into a glencairn glass, gave it a smell and a taste and.... thought it tasted pretty much like an older and less grainy Jameson. Honestly quite dull and one note, it was nice because it was sweet, buttery and sherried, but other than that it was quite boring and tasted very watered down (40%abv doesn't help it in this regard). Sweet and sherried and that's pretty much it, and the finish was also pretty much non existent. But alas, I tried to convince myself that I really liked it and wasn't completely disappointed. If I'm being honest, a ~€30 bottle of Powers Gold Label brought me more joy than this ~€60 hype bottle.

I'm not saying it's a bad whiskey, because it's obviously not. I just think it's insanely overrated and overpriced, and there is way too much hype surrounding it. It runs for about ~€60 a bottle and for that price I think there's far better whiskey- Irish or otherwise.

Should I give Redbreast another try?

I tried Redbreast 12 (not cask strength) back in the Summer, and I honestly was quite disappointed with it. I found it rather underwhelming, to me it just tasted like a slightly better Jameson, with more sherry and less grain. That's fine, but for €63 I almost felt ripped off. I spent the next 10 days or so going through the bottle and trying to convince myself that I actually did like it and wasn't completely disappointed, but I just couldn't. I'm quite dissatisfied when I see just how much overwhelming praise is given to Redbreast, and I'm thinking if I'm missing something here. I recently watched Bill's review of it on The Whiskey Dictionary and was intrigued when he said that he was initially underwhelmed with it as well, but came to really like it after giving it some time in the bottle. I'm now starting to wonder if maybe I went through the bottle a bit too quickly (I finished it in around 10 days) and that's why I feel the way I do.

With that in mind, I'm quite tempted to buy another bottle of Redbreast 12 (NOT cask strength) just to see if I feel any different, but I just really don't want to spend €63 on a bottle that I have a good chance of not really enjoying. Anyone have any advice?

Redbreast 27 - any leads?

Reposted from the Denver sub.

My girlfriend is finishing her doctorate before much longer and is a massive Irish whiskey fan. I'm trying to find a bottle of Redbreast 27 anywhere near Denver (willing to drive an hour or so if necessary), but haven't had any luck after checking the usual suspects. Several shops I've called have said they're not even allowed to disclose over the phone whether or not they have it in stock, and that I would have to come down and look myself - I'm not necessarily against this but I'm not trying to spend a Saturday driving to a dozen different stores.

All that to say, if anyone has any leads on where I might be able to snag a bottle near Denver I would be very grateful!

Edit: managed to snag the last bottle at Daveco, thanks everyone for the suggestions!
