Jesse "Rules" Blake with emphasis on the quotation marks

NHL 2020 rules.

24.2 "The spin-o-rama type move where the player completes a 360Β° turn as he approaches the goal, shall not be permitted. Should a player perform such a move during the penalty shot, the shot shall be stopped by the Referee and no goal will be the result."

I thought Jesse was slightly wrong, and it had to do with the puck momentum, but NHL has the term spin-o-rama in their rulebook!

Punctuation inside the quotation marks makes absolutely no sense as a grammatical rule.

Why is this considered correct? For all my life I've assumed that all punctuation not belonging to the quote itself should be placed after the ending quotation mark. For example, like this, when I quote the word "cue". See? That makes sense right? It looks weird to place the period of the host sentence inside the quote like this, "cue." Then the next sentence starts very abruptly. This is outrageous to me.

Creating a rule that automatically applies \textbf to text in quotation marks (i.e. dialogue in a book)

We have a fiction book full of dialogues that we need bolded.

Currently going through \textbf 'ing every single sentence in the book is tedious. Is there any way to automate this process in preamble?

Do punctuation rules differ depending on the reason for the quotation marks?

There are various reasons to place quotation marks around a word or phrase:

  • You can use them around an actual statement that a person made: Frank said, "The owls are not what they seem."
  • You can use them around a new term you are introducing (either one you made up or one that the reader would be unfamiliar with): We refer to this as a "humblebrag."
  • You can use them around a sequence of character that needs be typed or written: The password "$%3XjN!" is needed to access the nuclear football.
  • You can use them around a word or phrase that you are talking about, rather than the concept described by the word or phrase: The word "bicycle" has 7 letters.
  • You can use them as scare quotes around words, to indicate that others use the term, but you find its use inappropriate: And you expect me to pay you for this "art"?

My question is this: does the purpose of the quotation marks affect the rules about where to place periods, commas, question marks etc. near the quotes?

Especially in case #3, placing a period or comma within the quotation marks (which is clearly mandatory in case #1) can cause problems:

> When you enter the password "kumquat," the system will log you in.

> Make sure to copy the following text exactly as written: "genuflect$ knickerbocker# defunct! frenetic."

In the first example, it takes a punctuation nerd to realize that the comma is, in fact, not part of the password. In the second example, it's impossible to tell if the period is only there because of punctuation rules, or if it is in fact also part of the text you are supposed to copy.

I'm starting to doubt myself. Is there ever an instance where you would quote an exclamation point and then end the sentence, after the end quotation, with another punctuation mark?

This is American English, by the way.

I'm having an argument with a friend about why you can't do this, and now I don't even know. I found this page, and it gives this example:

Place a question mark or exclamation point within closing quotation marks if the punctuation applies to the quotation itself. Place the punctuation outside the closing quotation marks if the punctuation applies to the whole sentence.

Phillip asked, "Do you need this book?"

Does Dr. Lim always say to her students, "You must work harder"?

His argument is about the final sentence. He says, what if it needs to be expressed, in punctuation, that you must work harder is yelled? Would it ever be correct to say Does Dr. Lim always say to her students, "You must work harder!"?

This started because he wanted to know about directly quoting something that was written. He asked why you wouldn't include someone's period in their quotation, and then have to end the sentence with your own period. My only answer to that is it's not the way we do it in America.

Now I'm starting to doubt myself...

Three Dark Crowns meets Pretty Little Liars in this sensational and striking new fantasy from debut author Ellen Goodlett.

Three girls. Three deadly secrets. Only one can wear the crown.

Zofi has spent her entire life traveling across the Reaches. Just when her dom matters most, the king's men arrive and drag her away from her fellow Travelers to bring her to the capital--Kolonya.

Ren grew up in Kolonya, serving as a ladies' maid at court. She dreams of being a noble herself one day, but being ominously summoned to the king's courtroom after a misdeed isn't exactly what she had in mind.

Akeylah was raised by an abusive father in the Eastern Reach, surrounded by breg insurrection. She'd do anything to escape her family, even accept the invitation of a king who has every reason to despise her.

Each girl hides a dangerous secret--the kind that could get her killed for treason. But when the girls are brought before King Andros expecting an execution, instead they learn the truth: the king is dying and they are his only living heirs. Now the three of them must live at court and compete for the chance to rule. But someone in Kolonya knows the girls' secrets, and they'll stop at nothing to keep them from the throne.

A question to my fellow English-lovers that is quite literally keeping me awake:

When using a quote within my own question, does the punctuation within quotation marks rule still apply? For example: Did Abraham Lincoln really say, "You can't trust everything you find on the Internet?" vs. "...on the Internet"?

I have seen this done both ways; is it more of a stylistic choice?

Thanks in advance for putting my mind at ease.

English Grammar Rules (And YOU Can Help!)

Hi, everyone!

Welcome to the post where you're in charge and where you can help out everyone else!

Use this post as a resource for you and everyone else. Here, you can post any and every grammar rule you know about the English language and discuss them with others. Not only will you be helping and teaching others, but you'll also be helping and teaching yourself (we learn 90% of what we teach)!

So here's what you can do in this post:

  • Write one comment per rule. If you want to share several rules (awesome!), leave them each in separate comments
  • You have to explain the rules that you post so you and everyone else understand what you're talking about.
  • Discussions about the rule you posted should be posted as a comment of that comment. Do not post a discussion directly under this post, but under the comment you want to talk about
  • Before posting, make sure that your rule hasn't already been posted
  • If you ever have trouble with anything, even after discussing, don't hesitate to leave a comment that says you need help, and if any of our correctors/proofreaders is around, they can help.

Feel free to write rules that our correctors have taught you, or ones that you have learned yourself!

(Shout out to r/WriteStreak for coming up with this amazing idea first)

I'm a manger for an archipelago resort and we have a disturbing list of rules to follow [Part 2]

Part 1

Apologizes that I stopped writing so abruptly, but the thing is something truly terrifying happened and everything just went crazy. I am currently writing this in a little bit of a hurry, since I don't know if we will make it. Anyways here is what happened since my last post.

Rule 4# During the night the manager must go on two tours to check the harbor. If you spot a glowing crimson red sailboat entering the harbor, you must spray the oil found in the barrels over the boat and set it ablaze, which you do with your sidearm before it can dock.

As I ran down to the harbor with my gun drawn ready to shoot anything that would come in my path, all I could think was if the others were safe. On my way there it felt like the surroundings wrapped around me, almost like reality itself shifted, but the feeling could also be because I’ve just witnessed hellish things. As I came closer to the harbor the humming sound become louder and louder and once, I saw it, I stopped dead in my tracks.

What I saw was a sailboat that was solely made of glowing crimson red human skulls and a long mast made from what I deduced was human bodies. The smell was horrible, and I thought I will not on my life let this hellish boat dock in this harbor. I located the barrels and found it had a hose with a nozzle. I grabbed the hose and pulled it to the bridge’s edge and sprayed brownish-white oil all over it and then fired the gun and set it ablaze. The moment it did, the boat emitted a out of this world horrible roar that forced me to cover my ears as I watched it in a mix of absolute horror and amazement as it turned to ashes that was swept away with the water.

I walked slowly back up to the main building, trying to make sense of what had happened, not caring about if something jumped me or attacked me. As I entered the building I was greeted by Chloe, Miranda and Joseph who all tackled me to the ground and hugged me while crying in relief. My heart felt a lot easier now that I knew they were safe.

β€œWhat happened to you and were where you? You have been gone for almost 5 hours, we thought you were dead.” Miranda said.

β€œI don’t even know where to begin, wait did you say I’ve been gone for 5 hours?” I said as they helped me up as I looked at the wristwatch which said 1am.

β€œYes, what happened to you?” Joseph asked

β€œWell I had a not so pleasant encounter with the demonic harbo

The Genevieve-sized elephant in the room

I am not going to name accounts because of the no doxxing rule, but it appears to me that either Genevieve The QuΓ©bΓ©cois Stalker or her very dedicated allies make regular appearances on this sub.

There are several accountsβ€”at least one seemingly based in Canada and all of which write in a somewhat erratic non-native Englishβ€”that obsessively push the weird claims that Hillary is some kind of mail-order bride; that the HB/AB marriage is a fake "business arrangement"; that they have never actually lived together; that HB wore a prosthetic belly to fake her pregnancies (where the babies then supposedly came from, who knows? At times these accounts have insinuated that the kids actually belong to other Baldwin brothers!); that it was all done to cover up the fact that Alec contracted HIV from Kim B, who contracted it from Prince (uhhhh...yeah), etc etc. Truly wackadoodle stuff.

These accounts are sometimes hyper-focused on finding some sort of legal or criminal liability for Hillary, like that she stole US tax dollars by defrauding the UN (umm UN is not a US institution but ok), or that by using the name "Hilaria" when she called 911 to report the stalker, HB committed perjury (a 911 call is not testimony under oath, ma cherie). They often pose as though speaking objectively about the stalker's claims, usually making sure to put "stalker" in quotation marks, effectively amplifying the wackadoodleness ad nauseam. They often use the HillyVanilly monicker (which, props, is great!) that Genevieve uses on her twitter, and the Reddit posts/comments often mirror what's on G's twitter feed.

It makes sense of course that a stalker sent to jail because Hillary reported her would relish in HB's downfall. Hey, who can blame her? Revenge shadenfreude is a helluva drug!

I'm just flagging this so my fellow cucumberitos are aware that there may be some accounts pursuing their own personal vendettas and possibly even unhealthy stalkery obsessions (like, real stalker, not casual Instagram stalkers like ahem some of us have become). Perhaps this is the "agenda" that the u/stillabunchoftrolls account we suspected to be Alec was referring to.

I'm not saying Genevieve shouldn't be able to express her...quirky...theories in this free Reddit marketplace of ideas. After all, she has done her time and is a free woman.

Just something to be aware o

122 Year-Old Yale Law School Yearbook Featured Racial Epithets and Secret Societies

I recently posted a thread about beautifully handwritten lecture notes about property law by Professor William C. Robinson from 1874 that I bought off eBay: https://www.reddit.com/r/LawSchool/comments/kj319t/found_a_handwritten_1874_yale_law_school/

I wanted to follow up with some photos of the 1898 "Yale Shingle", which was the Yale Law School official student yearbook that I also came across and bought.

A few interesting tidbits: Of course, all the law students were men/boys, but I though the the descriptions of the students were interesting, especially the openly racist ones, such as "One of the Japs" to describe one of the two Japanese students. However, I loved the ads for bicycles and all-night Turkish baths in New Haven. The funniest pages were dedicated to "Secret Societies" such as Book and Gavel, which openly listed all their members.

[Translation] Author's twitter comments on Season 2, Episode 18

Source: starting from https://twitter.com/nezumiironyanko/status/1356973173158236173

Nagatsuki-sensei's tweets for this week's episode. May contain minor spoilers.

Rough translation:

Yeah! Time for this week's Re: Zero! Last time was a happy story about the past. Setting aside that last minute, let's look forward to the continuation! Please join us!

The three Ryuzus (Alma - Bilma - Delma) are the Ryuzu-sans wearing black clothing. Due to having entered the grave in the past in order to bring Garfiel out, the Ryuzu wearing white clothing (Shima) has become a different being than the other three, and was taken out of the rotation.

Basically, Garfiel was the only one who was aware of Shima's existence and spent time with her regularly over the last ten years. Even though the other Ryuzu-sans knew of her existence, think of it as them being unable to meet with her.

Maybe it should be called the period where 'Sanctuary' was freshly created, or the step where it was still in the middle of being created. The one accompanying Echidna, who created it, is an impertinent Beatrice.

The original Ryuzu was Ryuzu Meyer, and just as was pointed out since the Ryuzu-sans started appearing, if we can have you pay close attention to their ears, you can tell from the common points of the people of 'Sanctuary' that her species is half-elf.

With nothing to do in 'Sanctuary', she was probably bored, wasn't she. It's the sort of feeling where she could kill a lot of free time in the little playground on the top of a department store.

The one who has appeared is Roswaal A. Mathers. You can tell it's a strong bloodline from that appearance.
