Quotation Mark

Almost all of the quotation marks that surrounds a certain phrase are not being detected by AutoMod, despite myself explicitly including them in a rule.

All of the quotation marks and their Unicode equivalents were taken from the table that's within this Wikipedia page:

I'm a non-native English writer, and a beginner at that too. In my language we mark conversations with dashes, like this:

-Hi - said Mark - I like you.

Not quotation marks:

"Hi" said Mark "I like you"

I was writing with dashes automatically. One of my readers pointed out this mistake today, and I had to look up English novels to check if this really a thing. I have over 12 fics, and now I had to go back and correct all of the dashes to quotation marks, It was a real pain in the ass with my multiple chapter fics. I can't believe no one told me this before!

I recently reset my Ipad and noticed that my quotation marks changed. I live in Germany, so i always use the correct german ones, which are „these“, but now it always writes the english ones, which are "these". Lf course i can click and hold the key and then switch to the right ones, but that is a lot more work and not really practicable for writing a lot. And i know that before the reset, it had it the right way.

My keyboard is set to german, so that cant be the problem. Can i change which ones are on the keyboard, like the default ones?

Do you find that you use parentheses or quotation marks often when writing? I just realized this about myself while journaling for the first time in a years. I find I do it to express conflicting thoughts and opinions (because I can't keep a straight line of thinking and often have conflicting thoughts and opinions so it makes it challenging to form a coherent sentence.) While journaling I find myself always adding some sort of sassy (¿) comment that doesn't feel mine. Disclaimer: Not diagnosed with OSDD, haven't spoken to a professional about it yet

Dead Or Alive's ability is the fact that the user is, in fact, dead AND alive. They don't need to breathe, eat, drink or sleep, and they don't really bleed or feel pain. They also can't be killed, because that's already happened. The reason this is situational is because these abilities only work when the user cannot be seen. It's the shrodinger's cat stand. The stand can be seen without effect, but it has no abilities except punching and the above benefits.

In English, quotation marks are used around sentences to convey that they are being spoken. However I'm convinced there must be a better way to visually achieve this. How do other languages deal with this challenge?

I'm pretty sure this has been ask several times before, but I couldn't find it for some reason. I try to do following:

a.) » /This is slanted/ «

b.) »/This isn’t slanted at all!/«

Reason is that the Quotation-marks are wrapping the slash without a space. If ill use option a.) I get ugly formatting like this: »_this is a slanted text_« if I export it to LaTeX

I marked the extra spaces with an underscore.

Any suggestions, is this a Bug?

I keep seeing learners use <<this>> as quotation marks so I assume there's some kind of a textbook that encourages this. Guys (and gals), don't ;) Here's how quotation marks really work in Russian:

"These" are called "programmer quotes" or "typewriter quotes". These are the lazy option. Use them in the Internet, it's totally fine and everyone understands them. Shift+2 on the Russian keyboard, or the usual key left of Enter on an English keyboard. If you need something more "officially accepted", see below.

«These» (Alt+0171, Alt+0187) are the conventional quotation marks (some text editors even replace "these" with them). So it's highly recommended to use them in print or web design, but if you're just chatting - don't sweat it. And no, <<these>> are not a substitute - if your choice of keys is limited, better resort to "these".

„These“ (Alt+0132, Alt+0147) are the proper form for handwriting, fancy fonts or to use for a quote within a quote. Once again, you're very cool if you use them in design, but if you're chatting - resort to "these".

Finally, 'these' aren't Russian at all, but they probably can be used nowadays as the last resort (informally, once again - in chats).

Like what the question says, when do you use "Bonjour" and when do you use <<Bonjour>> when writing in French? I've seen both ways but I'm unsure when to use them / what context they're used for.

After reading through the comments on a post about fic turn offs, I'm really surprised by the amount of Americans that will stop reading a fic because the author uses single quotation marks instead of double.

Here in the UK we're taught to use single quotation marks for speech, and I know the same is true for other countries. Are there any people out there from countries where single quotation marks are the norm that will stop reading due to double quotation marks being used?

I'm horrified by the amount of potential readers I could be putting off by using ' instead of ". And I'm tempted to go through my published chapters and change all the speech marks, but don't want to put off current readers who are already invested if some people hate double quotation marks too.

For example; the sentence "if I woke up yesterday, and the first thing I heard was "good morning," I might be inclined to have a nice day".

Two instances of what I'm talking about happen in the above block of text and only one of them is correct.

For some reason, it's considered correct to use the structure "good morning," even though the comma isn't part of the object I'm building.

At the same time, putting the period outside of the quotes in "nice day." is actually wrong. But what if the sentence didn't originally end there? What if I want to end a sentence with a "quote from a friend?"

Why does the previous sentence have to actually officially end with a quotation mark there, instead of the question mark? The way the question mark is in with the quote makes it looks like it was originally a question, when it's just a necessity of the syntax. Why doesn't it go where I "expect it to be intuitively"?
