Real world quotations as flavor text

Yesterday I was sorting through my collection, and I saw some cards with real world quotations from famous books or authors. I then got interested, and I found out that this specific type of flavor text was discontinued with M14. MaRo has stated that the majority of players prefer in-world flavor text over real quotes; moreover, he mentioned that the real world quotations felt to some like they were in school. I like the fact that even Core Sets have their own plane, story and focus, but as an avid reader there's something... special in reading a quote, becoming interested in it, buying and delving into a whole new world thanks to some words on a Magic card.

For a comparison, let's use [[Underworld Dreams]]. Recently reprinted in THB (and one of my favorite cards), the new flavor text reads: "*Dreams are just one more form of torm

Why do some people use apostrophes instead of quotation marks?

I have seen that some people when writing dialogue use apostrophes as if they were quotation marks. This is throughout the entire fic so it is consistent.

β€œHe said this,” is how I (American English speaking native) normally see it.

β€˜They do this,’ is how it is used.

Is it a similar situation to how Americans write three thousand as 3,000.00 and some European countries use a comma as the decimal marker?

Why does the greater than symbol need to be in quotations, and why do I need the & in this formula.

I'm trying to do a ranking on a range of data using COUNTIFS since there is no RANKIFS, example as followed;

=COUNTIFS(Customers,B2,Profit,">"&C2)

Where Customers is range B2:B100

Profit is range C2:C100

I got this formula on this website

It works for my needs perfectly, but I dont understand two things.

Why do I need to put the quotation marks for the greater than symbol, and why I need to put the & before C2.

If I try to do it as followed, it doesn't work.

=COUNTIFS(Customers,B2,Profit,>C2)

A serious young man found the conflicts of mid 20th Century America confusing. He went to many people seeking a way of resolving within himself the discords that troubled him, but he remained troubled.

I've learned to do a custom format to display units after a number, for example 0 "ton" and then whatever value I put in the cell will say ton after. I wanted the format to reference another cell but putting the cell in the quotations just returned A233 for example instead of the word in cell A233.

I'm doing this because I want to be able to reference a cell as a number value but still display a unit (kg) after it by referencing another cell that I can update the unit to display, all while using that cell as a numerical value.

what i REALLY want to do is to have the convert function reference the same cell for the first two arguments. For example: A1 says "500 kg" with no formatting. I'd like another cell to say =convert(A1,A1,"lbm") where the function recognizes A1 as both a numerical value and the kilogram unit for purposes of converting.

Used a quote, cited it in-text, added to references, but forgot to add quotations - is it plagiarism?

Hello. So for a financial math assignment in Uni, I used a definition of a term, did an in-text citation: for example, blah blah blah (author, 2018), added it to the references list, but after submitting I realised I forgot to add quotations. It was a direct quote, and I cited it in the paper and in the bibliography and it is the only quote I used. I didn't mean to plagiarize, but since we use turnitin, I know that line is going to turn up as highlighted. I'm anxious and wanted to ask, is it going to be considered plagiarized? Am I going to get a penalty? This is my first time ever having such an issue

The C G Jung quotation Alan said was very important to him.

"We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. I am the oppressor of the person I condemn, not his friend and fellow-sufferer…

Perhaps this sounds very simple, but simple things are always the most difficult. In actual life, it requires the greatest art to be simple. And so acceptance of oneself is the essence of the moral problem and the acid test of one’s whole outlook on life. That I feed the beggar, that I forgive an insult, that I love my enemy- all these are undoubtedly great virtues. But what if I should discover that the least amongst them all, the poorest of all beggars, the most impudent of all offenders, yea the very fiend himself - that these are within me, and that I myself am the enemy who must be loved - what then? Then, as a rule, the whole truth is reversed: there is then no more talk of love and long-suffering; we say to the brother within us β€œRaca,” and condemn and rage against ourselves. We hide from the world, we den

A quotation from β€œChildren of Dune” and some thoughts on the relevancy

β€œA large populace held in check by a small but powerful force is quite a common situation in our universe. And we know the major conditions wherein this large populace may turn upon its keepers β€” One: when they find a leader. This is the most volatile threat to the powerful; they must retain control of the leaders.

Two: When the populace recognizes its chains, keep the population blind and unquestioning.

Three: When the populace perceives a hope of escape from bondage. They must never believe escape is possible.”

Children of Dune by Frank Herbert Page 158, Ace Premium Edition

Many readers of this sub will instantly recognize these three themes heavily at play in our present World. But I believe this alludes more to ourselves as individuals, and our own escape from bondage.

Before one can do anything to truly help the World, self-mastery is a must. Each of us is a spark of the Divine source - whatever name you ascribe to it. This fact is undeniable once experienced on a perso

Hi all,

There are many sources of in-lore quotes online, but none were as easy to use as I would have liked.

Now this power is at your fingertips as well!

Hi everyone! I was wondering if you lovely knowledgeable people could confirm my suspicion that my jeweller is over quoting me. Sorry for the essay.

I asked a boutique jeweller in the U.K. to design a bespoke ring with a teal coloured, pear shaped moissanite and a halo, similar to the Kristin Coffin β€œCeleste” ring but with a few minor changes e.g. to the shape of the halo. The jeweller has only been able to source larger stones of around 3ct in size, rather than the ~1.8ct for the KC ring. The setting was 14k rose gold with a halo of lab diamonds (0.30ct total). I have no idea where the stone is from as they just refer to sourcing it from β€œsuppliers”; it certainly isn’t a brand name like C&C.

Anyway, the quote I received was Β£4100, which is about US$5100. This is significantly more than the KC β€œCeleste” ring, which is only $3500! I feel awful pulling the plug on this jeweller after they had gone to the effort of creating a mock-up for me but I can’t help feel like I’m being ri

Quotation Styles Poll: Pros and Cons of ending a quote with . or ,

I'm going to try and make this as high effort a post as I possibly can! Basically, I am at the editing stage and I have noticed that my editor has a VERY different typing style than I do!

"I would write a sentence this way," my character said, "but even if it was only a statement this is how it would end,"

"And my editor writes like this." his edit said. "Even if the sentence did not really end."

But I'm wondering if we're both wrong.

"Maybe," I guessed, "This is the way."

"Or," perhaps I pondered, "is this even better without capitalization?"

I thought the editor was supposed to be the expert here, but I keep finding incomplete sentences and he keeps telling me that's normal. Am I just not modern enough to know something he does? What's going on?

John Doe: It's my pleasure.

or

Interviewer: "Good morning, thank you for joining me."

John Doe: "It's my pleasure."

Are the quotations marks necessary, should they be left out because the [Name] followed by [:] intro supersedes them, or is including them optional? Is there a specific rule that speaks to this? I've seen both formats used.

Who is Holden talking about in this quotation?

In Tiamat's Wrath, Holden tells Teresa Duarte:

>"There was a woman I once knew. Long time. She used to say you can't judge anyone by what they say. You have to watch what they do."
>
>"She said that."
>
>"I recognize the irony. But I watched what she did too. How she made people like her. How she made them afraid. I'm not good at the second one, but I was pretty good at the first part."
>
>"Because of her?"
>
>"In part."

Do we know specifically who he's speaking about? Avasarala and Bobbie both come to mind, but Holden was already pretty good at making people like him before he met either of them. One of his moms? Is there a definitive answer, have we ever seen a woman who knew Holden for a long time say that specific piece of advice?

Thanks in advance for tolerating what is probably just bad memory or poor reading comprehension on my part.

How do you guys deal with situation like this - client meeting before quotation

So I received an online enquiry today from our website, a client would like to meet with us at their office (30mins commute each way) to discuss their project. I replied to them saying I'd love to meet but it would also be helpful if I can send you an estimate on how much such project would cost so that they know the cost aligns with their budget. Client replied my e-mail saying they want to see if we are the right partner first. And I have yet to reply them.

I've had previous experience where I would just go: 'sure let's meet I'll come to your office!', had the chat, got the scope of the project, send them a quotation only to find out that it was way over what they are willing to pay, and that's 2 hours wasted. Since then I've always do a quick 'budget qualification' before attending to a meeting, but this is the first time a client refuses to give me the information I need to do that.

Should I just go to the meeting?

What do you make of this Ayn Rand quotation?

Go to YouTube and type in "I love white guys" including quotation marks and view the results.

You will only see young black women, and a middle aged Japanese man singing and dancing. You won't ever see an Asian woman speaking.

Difference between quotation marks ( " ) and angle brackets <> while including files.

My project requires a few classes. I created them in separate .h files and included them all (where they were required) using angle brackets (<, >) They were not detected by the compiler. Then I switched to using quotation marks ( " ). This time they worked. Why is that? What difference does it make?

Bluebooking Question - Can you have quotation parenthetical and explanatory parenthetical in same citation?

So here is what I want to do:

Case name, XX f.3d XX, XX (X Cir, 2018)("yada yada yada")(affirming lower court's decision to deny motion)

Is this appropriate? I've done a bunch of Googling but have not seen this done explicitly. I know the logical thing would be to combine the two - ie (affirming lower court's decision to deny motion on the basis that "yada yada" and "yada yada.") But my quote is rather long and I want it in its entirety while also emphasizing that it is used to affirm lower court's decision.

Alternatively, in the footnote would it be appropriate to lead with the quote instead of including it in parenthetical? ie - "yada yada yada." Case name, XX f.3d XX, XX (X Cir, 2018)(affirming lower court's decision to deny motion)

Much appreciated!

Proposal: Compile a list of anti-racist, anti-sexist, and/or generally compassionate SSC quotations

What it says on the tin. I fear this will be a smear piece. I want to be prepared with evidence that Scott is a loving human being who wants people to be happy and healthy and who wants to see the end of racism and sexism (he'd just prefer to do it in a rational and efficient way).

I hope this isn't a culture war post--I apologize if it is. My goal is to try to make it as safe as possible for people to express nuanced and evidence-based views (regardless of where they stand politically or culturally) by defending Scott as needed.

EDIT: I spent a bit of time perusing the archives, and I'm no longer so sure I'd characterize Scott/SSC as "anti-sexist" or "anti-racist"; I'd been an occasional reader and wasn't aware of some of the more controversial posts on those topics. In short, I was previously surprised when I thought he was wrong or naive; now I see him as fallible. I think he's occasionally done a pretty poor job representing his beliefs on some of these topics, or has held

Seeking quotation explanation. What did claire mean?

It’s a thought of Claire’s in book 1. It’s after the big make up sex. What does Claire mean by β€œyou’re too quick by half, lad.” And more specifically, what does she mean frank never found that out?

β€œOh, aye, Sassenach,” he answered a bit ruefully. β€œI am your master … and you’re mine. Seems I canna possess your soul without losing my own.” He turned me on my side and curled his body around me. The room was cooling in the evening breeze from the window, and he reached to draw a quilt over us. You’re too quick by half, lad, I thought drowsily to myself. Frank never did find that out.

Ways how you get quotation from your competitors or similar service provider

Just wanna know how entrepreneurs here get quotations from their competitors to further study the market and improve competitive advantage.

Are there sneaky ways? Do you hire web scrapers or VA to do that? Use fake company email?

I am curious to know! Any industry is welcome. Just wanna know how you guys do this or if you care to do this.

Pasting text into Excel without losing quotation marks

I have a bunch of code numbers that are enclosed in quotation marks.

I want to paste these into Excel (one line each), and then use a simple concatenation to get a comma at the end of each line (they'll be used as a list of input values in a Python function). In this case there aren't that many lines, and I'll probably just add the commas manually, but in other cases there could be hundreds of lines.

If I copy the lines into my browser, notepad or any other program I've tried, the quotation marks remain. But when I copy the lines into Excel, they're removed (i.e. I'm only left with the string of numbers). Only if I paste into the formula bar are the quotation marks not lost, but then all lines will be pasted into one row.

Copying (in this case from a Jupyter notebook):

Curious about some questionable quotation from the Quran.

A friend of mine who used to be very right leaning and anti Muslim mentioned having read the Quran cover to cover and mentioned a few passages.

One of which had something to do with justification or finding beauty in a woman/wife's bruises.

The other had to do with the afterlife, men being too pure to be tempted by some sort of child/angelic creature (I believe specifically male but I'm not sure) despite it's beauty. They also constantly talk about the afterlife/heaven being overly sexual/erotic.

I was wondering if these were actually representative of anything in the Quran, I take their opinions with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to anything related to Islam, but with school and work I don't have much time to read through the Quran for a few vague passages...

Shakespeare Lexicon and Quotation Dictionary: still good

I tend to distrust any Shakespeare scholarship before about 1950. I think it wasn't until then that standards of evidence and peer review really reached high quality.

So as enticing as "Shakespeare Lexicon and Quotation Dictionary" is, I'm hesitant to use it as a primary source because it was published in 1902.

Any thoughts on using this impressive work as a primary source for scholarly work?

I have a question about the tenses used for indirect quotation

when you're indirectly quoting someone, I find a lot of people irl and internet not using the past tenses, how correct is that ?

John: You'll be doing the laundry today, James.

so when I want to quote John when reporting to someone else what he said, it should be like this: "John told me that I would be doing the laundry today"

So how correct is this ? "John told me that I will be doing the laundry today", because I swear to god I see a lot of people doing the same mistake (if it is)
