LPT: When a friend is upset, ask them one simple question before saying anything else: 'Do you want to talk about it or do you want to be distracted from it?'

This is honestly one of the best things you can do for an upset friend. I use it all the time and people respond very well to it. Sometimes people come to you because they need to vent. Comfort them first, then follow up with 'do you want advice or do you want me to just listen?'. But other times, they just need to let someone outside of the conflict know what happened, and then they want to talk about something else. Talk about your own day, show them the latest funny thing you saw, go do something fun together. This question sets boundaries and builds trust. It shows you can be there in any way they need.

edit: WOW! so many awards! thanks so much. im going about pming everyone to thank them. but heres a carrd link to BLM resources and a bunch of campaigns, charities, and black owned businesses you can donate to. it would mean so much to me as an ally of the BLM movement if you put a few dollars towards a campaign of your choice. sorry, im on mobile: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.c

LPT: From here on out, make "What was your company's COVID response?" a standard interview question.

I work in software. My whole company has been working from home for the past two months, and performing at 100%. Now management is forcing us all to come back into the office on June 1st, for no discernible reason.

I don't want to work for a company that cares so little about the health of employees and their families, ever again. I'll be looking for something new as soon as it's practical, and I will definitely be asking prospective employers this.

EDIT: Unsubscribing from replies now because I can't keep up with them. Thanks, all, a lot of good responses here! And a few weirdos who are somehow personally offended by the very idea of asking an interviewer about working conditions. Reddit is a strange place.

A genuine question regarding TLOU Part II NOT related to the story

I've been seeing a lot of comments about the gameplay of TLOU 2 as "average", "generic", or even "outdated", and here I am after beating the game thinking, "Boy, these guys sure must be playing some crazy good games". I straight up think the gameplay is fantastic by any standard, and I'm curious what are the reasons why people make those above comments.

The game fixes a lot of the flaws of the first game. Enemy variety is far better, you have more stealth and combat options, and shooting guns has really good effect and impact. The AI is some of the best and most reactive in any stealth game, and I have to commend the level design in the sequel. Some of the later levels are quite complex and have great verticality to them, making stealthing through them some of the best stealth experiences I've had since Hitman 2. It sure beats many of the cookie-cutter outposts in a lot of open world games these days. The only thing I think the game lacked regarding stealth was a move body option, bu

If they're civil, I'm civil.
If they're struggling, I'm helpful.
If they're rude, I have fun.

The reason I remember this one is because I've said all of these things separately before but this was the first time I got them all squeezed into one single interaction. It just went so perfectly. It will never happen again.

LPT: To get an email reply from individuals notorious for not replying, frame your question so that their lack of reply is a response.

This is something I learnt while in Grad School/academia but no doubt works in most professional settings. Note this is a very powerful technique, use it sparingly or you are likely to piss people off.

As an example, instead of asking "Are you ok for me to submit this manuscript" you would ask "I am going to submit this manuscript by the end of next week, let me know beforehand if there are any issues/amendments".

People dont reply, not because they haven't read your email, but because they read it and stuck it in their "reply later" pile. This bypasses that.

LPT: When interviewing for a job, when asked the salary question, turn that back around on the interviewer (nicely)!

This has worked for me on my last three jobs (one of them was a promotion) that I got. When the interviewer asks the question: what salary are you looking for?, instead of listing what you’re expecting ask them instead.

I always start with explaining that I have been researching salaries in my field but wanted to know what they felt is a competitive salary for someone with my experience? (If this your first job interview or you’re going for an entry level job that you don’t have experience in, you can always change the part about experience to β€œthis position”).

Oftentimes, they will give you the number that they are expecting to pay for that position; and every time I ask a potential employer it has been at least $5-$10k more then I was going to ever say.

This also helps you compare what they’re willing to pay vs whether that salary is worth the job. AND you don’t run the risk of under selling yourself! (If they’re expecting to pay $60k and you say $40k, they’re not going to corr

I am Andrew Juan, and I was the National Youth Director for the Yang2020 Presidential Campaign! I'm here to answer questions on youth engagement in politics and the 2020 election! Ask Me Anything!

Hey Reddit, what's up? My name is Andrew Juan, and I'm a high school rising senior who probably was the only high school student working full-time on the Yang2020 campaign, and likely any other campaign so far.

Here's some background about me and the Yang campaign. In April of 2019, I first learned about Yang, and I thought this dude was ridiculous. But then, I saw his CNN Town Hall and learned more about him. I wanted to get involved, so I join the Email Response Team, at the time, a very small group of people responding to emails sent in to the campaign.

I cranked out plenty of emails and was eventually hired as an intern, expanding my workload to various other tasks, particularly in Distributed Organizing and digital organizing. Then, around July/August, I realized, we needed a youth organizing branch. No other campaign had launched one yet, and I decided that we needed to be the first, so then, Youth for Yang was born, and I was hired as National Youth Director.

Our team grew a

My Catholic teacher calls for my suspension for asking the wrong questions, I decide to behave

This happened years ago at what would turn out to be my last year at a Catholic school, for reasons that will become obvious. I don't have anything against people of faith, but it was not my thing, very early on.

I was 12 years old and in 7th grade. I was becoming disenchanted with my Catholic upbringing. I had so many questions, and it might have saved my faith to have them answered reasonably. The adults didn't want to reason with a curious 12-year-old. They wanted to see a nice Catholic girl who didn't feel compelled make so much distasteful noise.

Sex ed was still a part of any Catholic curriculum, and as it turned out, my religion teacher, Mrs. M, was also my sex ed teacher. When she opened up our first sex ed class with, "Now, I'm just as embarrassed to be here as you are," I didn't see it as an expression of empathy. I saw it as a grown woman, humiliated to be teaching basic biology. It made me sad.

Junior High sex ed wasn't just biology, though. It was an effort to shape ou

TIFU by asking my dad a question.

So this is an old story, from when I was about 11, so somewhere in the early 2000's. I was working on my homework in my room, when suddenly an unrelated question came to mind. Considering my dad is pretty knowledgeable I decide to ask him for the answer. I walk into the living room where my parents are watching television. Since this is before you could simply pause your show, or at least before that technology was common, I decide to ask my dad if its okay to interrupt his show, thinking he would tell me to wait till a commercial or something. Me: "Dad, is it okay if I ask you a question?" My dad stiffens and slowly turns his head to look at me. He looks a bit pale and stricken, "W-what?" Me: "I was wondering, if you aren't busy, if I can ask you a question?" Dad: "Uh, yeah... just... go wait in my room." I happily go to my parents bedroom, the only other room with a TV, and turn it on as I wait.

This next part is my mom's perspective, which she shared with me years later. She was st

Trying to settle a debate.

ETA - before as in before you get undressed and ready to hop in.

ETA again: Thanks for all of the responses, although you have made me conclusively lose the debate. To clarify, I get undressed, step in the shower, turn the tap on for a few seconds, position the shower head away from me, switch from tap to shower head, stand at the opposite side of the shower to dodge the water for a few more seconds while it warms up, and then proceed with my shower. I truly thought this was what most people did. Eye-opening.

[Question] Does anyone else hate when friends/family ask you to play songs for them, but you can't sing so that would basically mean playing the same 4-5 chords over and over again for 4 minutes, and when you try to explain how boring that is, nobody understands?

I'm seriously so tired of this. It makes me feel super insecure, like I'm a bad player or something since it feels boring. They always ask why I don't play full songs. I try to explain that the reason I like just playing the first parts or bits of songs is because the guitar parts for the majority of songs are just literally the same few chords over and over, and without the lyrics on top of them, it gets old really fast.

Edit: this is getting a lot more attention that I had thought. First of all thanks for all the advice! I guess I’d like to clarify that I’ve been playing guitar for about 14 years now, and studied music theory in college, and I’ve been playing in a blues band and doing live shows for maybe 3 years. So I’m familiar with all the different styles of playing, pedals, looping, and all that stuff. It’s mainly just the fact that I’m way too self conscious to sing that makes playing solo seem so daunting.

AITA for getting annoyed after my girlfriend asked me a trap question?

My girlfriend and I live together. We are both pretty laid back people. Now, my girlfriend is normal weight, a little on the chubby side but still super attractive to me. Today, she tried out a smaller dress and asked if it made her look fat.

I said she looked amazing, she said I didn't answer the question. So, I said she looked great and she said I should answer tell her the "truth". I asked if she really wanted to know the answer and she said yes. I said the top was a little small, and not super flattering. She then got mad and said that was rude and started crying.

At this point I got annoyed, and said she shouldn’t ask trap questions if she’s going to cry about it afterwards. She claimed she wanted β€œsupport”. We’ve been fighting all day about it.

Aita?

AskScience AMA Series: We are the NASA New Horizons team, here to answer your questions about the New Horizons spacecraft, parallax imaging, deep space exploration and what we learned at Pluto. Ask us anything!

Join us at today at 1 p.m. ET (17 UT) to ask anything about NASA's New Horizons mission! In July 2015, New Horizons became the first spacecraft to explore Pluto and its moons. Recently, the spacecraft - which is more than four billion miles from home and speeding toward interstellar space - took images of the stars Proxima Centauri and Wolf 359 from its unique vantage point in deep space. Scientists combined these images with pictures of the same stars taken near the same time from Earth, creating stereo images that instantly demonstrate the parallax effect astronomers have long used to measure distances to stars. New Horizons is humankind's farthest photographer, imaging an alien sky. Why does New Horizons "see" these stars in a different place in the sky than on Earth? How are these images sent back from New Horizons? How long does it take the team on the ground to send commands to the spacecraft? Where is New Horizons headed next?

Not Getting Meteors? Want to know when the update is coming to Console/Mobile? Welcome to the (Frequently Asked) Questions Megathread! (1.4 FAQ | Journey's End)

#Hello fellow Terrarians! My name is James...

Oh wait, it's not.

Anyway, there's been some really common reposts of the same questions over and over in the subreddit lately. So, I decided to put the most common ones together in a FAQ megathread! Feel free to ask your questions down in the comments below, I'll add the answers to the post.

>When is the 1.4 update coming to console / mobile?

Terraria for consoles is developed by Pipeworks, porting the original code into the Unity engine. These updates usually take a while to port, so I'd say it might be a year or even more to get 1.4 onto consoles, although it could be shorter. 1.3.5 only came out on Xbox and PS4 in April, and the Switch version is still on version 1.3.1.1.

The mobile version is developed by DR Studios, and takes significant time to optimise the game for a mobile platform. Expect a longer timeframe, as terraria is still on 1.3.0.7 for mobile.

The last time I remember it being so dangerous to question the dogma of the day was the weeks and months after 9/11

I'm slightly older than most here having immigrated to the US shortly before 9/11 and I vividly remember how things were at the time. I imagine many are too young to remember it well.

There were two big things that occurred after 9/11 that I am now seeing as well:

  1. You're either with us or against us
  2. A reaction that is going to kill more people than the initial inciting event

You're either with us or against us

Bush said it shortly after 9/11 and it was pretty clear. Anyone who said we might be overreacting or that we should be measured in our approach was a coward who hated America. Nuance was out the window and people were searching for ways to be offended. Bill Maher was fired for what were pretty benign remarks. The outrage was less online because social media didn't exist but it was very clear you weren't to deviate from the norm or you were going to be ostracized.

The same is true now. A UCLA professor said he wouldn't provide special accommodations to black

[FAQ] Most common questions about CHAZ answered by a resident.

This post is is an aggregate of the CHAZ AMA that was done earlier. Will try to edit and add to this as needed. Thanks.

#CHAZ is a peaceful protest area in support of the Black Lives Matter movement in Seattle.

Is CHAZ a fully-autonomous, self-sustaining, sovereign state? No. It’s simply an area within Capitol Hill, Seattle where people are protesting for BLM.

Who is CHAZ? It’s not a β€œwho”. It’s just an area that people come to to protest.

Who organized CHAZ? Is there a leader? No one person or group organized CHAZ specifically. There is no formal β€œleader”. The best answer is CHAZ naturally came about after the Seattle Police Department (SPD) left the area after 10+ days of protesting for BLM occurred.

Who is Raz Simone? He's a local Seattle musician and community member who is an advocate for BLM. He regula
