What's the deal with polyester?

I've only started paying closer attention to the types of fabrics (and their sources) used in clothing in the last few years, and I've noticed an overwhelming presence of polyester (often as a blend) in clothes that, in my uneducated opinion, really have no need for poly. I know poly in clothing is not a new phenomenon, but I'm puzzled as to why it's so popular.

From my understanding, polyester is cheaper than natural textiles, so I understand that particular benefit to manufacturers, and I know that it can lend some wrinkle-resistance to clothing and dries quicker. Other than that, what are the real benefits of polyester? I see it in cheap clothing and higher end clothing alike, nearly ubiquitous in athletic or athleisure clothing, in pants, shirts, shorts, underwear, socks, hats, etc. Am I missing something?

My main gripes:
- I find it far less breathable than pure cotton, and I hate the sticky feeling when I start the break a sweat. I don't see how this makes it the top c

Removing color run from polyester?

What’s up!

TIFU... I have a transparent 100% polyester jacket. I washed it on 30 degrees with a beige pair of cargo pants not realizing it could run. It did.

So now my clear jacket has a beige tint.

I immediately watched it again, added some vinegar... didn’t work.

Washed it again with some oxygen bleach using the pre-wash cycle... nothing.

Now it’s sitting in a bucket with oxygen bleach but it looks like it isn’t working.

I’m reading online that it’s supposed to be incredibly hard to dye polyester. You need special dye, it needs to be at near boiling temp etc. So what kind of incredibly bad luck did I have lol.

Is there anyone here that happens to have experience/expertise in this or did I just screw myself?

On the bright side... the discoloration is perfectly even. Looks like it was always supposed to be clear with a beige tint but I’m hoping it’s fixable.

Thanks in advance.

Cord Specs Comparison Table - Dyneema, Kevlar and Polyester

TLDR: Check out this table and tell me what you think of Dacron and 1.0mm UHMWPE braided cord!

In the quest for the most optimal guyline and bear line, I developed the table linked above. Here is a brief summary of the relevant criteria and "winners" in my mind.

Bear line

  • Apart from being light ad cheap, cord needs to be slick and strong (300+ lbs).
  • 1.2mm Zline Slick is sort of the de facto champ here, but overpriced.
  • Braided UHMWPE 1.0m (or smaller) seems to hit a sweet spot for hangs. Should be slick and just as strong as Z line, while weighing less and being half the price. Arguments against it would be that it could snag easily and cut into trees.

Guyline

  • Apart from being light and cheap, cord should be strong enough (~100lbs, per BPL), while being big enough to either work in linelocs (3's preferrable, but minis, micros, V's and ali knockoffs ideall

Can someone break down the differences between polyester and nylon?

Really curious to understand things on a slightly more technical level. What differentiates the fibers? What makes nylon more durable? Why is polyester the choice for lightweight hiking/running tops?

I know that both are synthetics and are PET derivatives. But I don’t fully understand how they are so different when it comes to performance and durability. Seeing how Arc uses these materials, I believe there must be some significant difference.

How long until Polyester allergy symptoms go away?

Hi

The title pretty much says it all. I was wearing a black dress made of polyester. I didn't know I had an allergy, so I wore it the entire day.

By the end of the day, my back started to feel super itchy. I was confused, but paid no mind.

Later in the evening it felt as if dozens of very small needles were pricking me on my back whenever I moved.

The only thing that in my opinion could've caused this reaction was the dress, so I changed after I took a long shower, and hoped it would be better the next day.

Long story short: It is not better. Especially when I start to feel warm, i feel the needles again. I tried showering again and again and it helped for a while but only temporary. What I'm wearing now, should be fine to wear, so I am not sure why it hasn't stopped so far.

how long could this last? It's really getting uncomfortable.

What should I do with my old polyester clothes?

I know polyester is bad for a bunch of reasons (it breaks down quickly, but then takes a long time to break down in landfills, it sheds microplastics, etc) and I'm trying to eliminate it from my clothing. However, I have a lot of old T-shirts and things that are pretty threadbare or have stains (my main reason for hating polyester is because it makes me sweat a LOT).

is there a sustainable way to get rid of it? Should I try and re-purpose some of it by making crop tops even though it sheds micro plastics when I wash it?

I used to be able to drop off my shit at Goodwill and not sweat about it and now that they're closed for COVID I am having to take actual accountability for my plastic wardrobe. Wah. /s

Worried about using Mama Koalas now that I've realized they are 100% polyester contacting baby's skin

Hi, I'm a soon-to-be FTM and I saw Mama Koalas recommended very often on here--so, I got a dozen. The rest of my stash (so far) is all prefolds/flats with covers. I feel really dumb for not checking before buying, but the Mama Koalas are all plastic/polyester, and I was hoping to minimize plastic fiber contact with my kiddo's skin. I'm just worried that all that plastic against my baby's skin will be more likely to cause reactions (I have sensitive skin and I'm prone to fungal infections). Is this a valid concern or am I making too big a deal out of it?

I was wondering if it's possible to use the Mama Koalas as prefold/flat covers (just leaving the microfiber insert out)? I already washed them so I doubt I could return them.

- pants

- sweaters

I see many products online listed as polyester or cotton blend and I don't know if they're "bad". Can I wash them together? Are they durable? Do they shrink?

What are your criteria when choosing fibers? Do they fit fundamentally different? Are the colors different depending on the fiber?

Best way to prevent cotton/cotton-polyester shrinkage?

This is probably frequently asked, but I tried googling this and found many different responses about how to properly wash cotton T-shirts. Some said hang them up after washing with cold water, some said putting them in the dryer is fine. All I know is that my clothes have shrunk a lot and I need new ones, and I don’t want them to shrink as quick as my current shirts.

I am mainly looking at getting cotton or cotton/polyester blend shirts. What’s the best way to go about washing them to minimize shrinkage? And does the composition of cotton/poly blends affect how to wash them (EX: I have a 33% cotton/ 67% polyester shirt and a 50/50 shirt. Should I wash them differently?)?

No cute, comfy cotton bras for the big boobs, just crap that'll shed micro plastics with every wash and wear and cause my skin to break out in rashes and pimples because my skin is highly reactive to polyester. Fabulous.

ETA: seriously, does any brand exist at all that doesn't use plastic in their materials? I feel like I've seen cotton bras up to a C cup, but maybe I'm wrong and this is an all-boob problem and not a big boob problem.

This article talks about the squeeze pressure with polyester and why it may be superior to epoxy. Not piezoelectricity, which is only a temporary effect.

"A quartz crystal will typically absorb these frequencies and re-emit them. However since the crystal has been physically stressed by the shrinking potting compound when it cured, it is no longer a linear transducer, but becomes non-linear. When a signal is introduced into a non-linear device, it will be transmuted to harmonics of the original frequency, and in the case of the quartz crystal emitted off the ends. The emitted frequencies will be 2, 3, 4 or even more times the frequency of the original energy, and thus it transmutes negative energies into positive ones."

Got my first fitted (Dodgers Polyester) and the logo is slightly off center, the crown is a bit lopsided, and the stitch that goes behind the logo is slightly to the right. Is this just how 59Fiftys are or should I try to get an exchange?

Would you recommend using polyester resin on a boardgame to protect it?

Having come from the video-game hobby, I used to make sure all of my video games stayed in pristine condition by setting them in polyester resin. Although this meant I was then unable to play the games, I didn't mind the compromise because it did mean the game would remain in tip-top condition for several thousand years.

Now I have started afresh with boardgames I have noticed that when I took the shrinkwrap off my copy of Patchwork that it then didn't look quite as new. I was like the shrinkwrap gave it a kinda 'new game' look, you know, and removing it aged the game and made it look pretty old and tarnished, almost immediately (and definitely within 15 seconds).

Obviously it would be lunacy to keep all of my games in shrinkwrap forever, so I thought a good compromise would be to take a leaf from my video-game days and set each game into poyester resin. I have moved my daughter out of her bedroom, set her up a new place to sleep in a little used kitchen drawer and have turned her ol

Anyone print on really thin polyester?

My windbreaker is made out of thin polyester and I'm really skeptical about it being able to withstand 200 degree celcius. It will atleast leave some kind of mark I'm almost sure.

How could I aproach this?/protect the material?

Dying dolls with ink or polyester dye?
