CHRISTMAS SPECIAL - LAST CHRISTMAS - 9/10
We had so many Christmas specials in concession for a while when they kept splitting up the episodes that it feels like it’s been ages since the last one. It’s Peter Capaldi’s first real Christmas special as the Doctor, Clara is still around and Santa Claus has landed on her roof. Nick Frost is brilliantly silly as Santa and it’s a funny contrast with the Doctor’s cynicism, like how he refused to believe Robin Hood was really real. Clara rejoins the Doctor for an adventure to the North Pole where a space station has been invaded by Face Huggers, monsters that put you into a dream whilst they eat your brain. They have a super creepy beetle-like design and feel kind of similar to the beetle from “Turn Left” with the clicky noise they make and the dreamworld they put you in.
Since the backdrop of the episode is the Doctor and Clara lying to each other about finding happiness whilst actually being alone and sad, it was inevitable that Clara would get put into a dreamworld by one of the Face Huggers. We get a final appearance of Danny though just as an idealised version of Clara's imagination. The bit with Clara and the chalk board was very creepy, the sound editing was really great with the faint sound of the Doctor saying the words as they appeared. The lighting in this episode was also really beautiful, from Clara’s Christmas decorated house to the cold clinical space station.
It’s a very Inception-based episode and I guessed quite early the space station was a dream itself. The sad moment of realisation when reading the textbooks being inter-cut with Santa Claus saying weird stuff like calling himself “sweet papa Crimbo” feels like something that shouldn’t work but just does and I can’t really explain why. Maybe just because Nick Frost feels like he was meant to play this part (I mean he is called Nick Frost!) Santa rides everyone around on his sleigh, and even the Doctor is smiling and laughing and having a go at riding it. It felt so weird to see him smiling I thought it was gonna be a whole other dream. The little tidbit of the Doctor waking up on a volcano planet not getting an explanation was funny, just one of the things he does when Clara’s not around.
The Doctor makes it back to save Clara but she’s been sleeping for 60 years and is now an old lady. It’s like the opposite of “The Girl Who Waited” in Clara’s acceptance. I think it’s interesting how Amy had a sort of blind love and admiration for the

###2017 Season Summary
2017 saw one of the largest upheavals in 49ers history, with the club finally parting ways long time general manager Trent Baalke, as well as first year head coach Chip Kelly. Coming in to replace the departures were a pair of first timers, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, respectively.
Shanahan had agreed to the hiring during the 2016 playoffs, where he lead the Atlanta Falcons offense to a historic year and a Super Bowl appearance. In the days and weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, Fox broadcaster and future Hall of Famer John Lynch phoned Shanahan and pitched himself as a potential General Manager candidate. Shortly after the Falcons’ Super Bowl loss the pair signed 6-year contracts to take over in San Francisco.
The rookie head coach and the rookie GM set out to turn around the 49ers and the first step was putting together the right staff to do so. Lynch, a man unafraid to admit what he doesn't know, immediately reached out to his long time friend John Elway and pried prized talent evaluator Adam Peters away from the Broncos. Lync

For the fourth time that day, Cassidy pulled open the mailbox door in front of her sprawling mansion home. You could tell by the way she bit her lip and smiled as she reached in to find a dark blue envelope that this time was different. As she tore opened the blue envelope she mumbled to herself:
“Dear Ms. Rey, we at Infinity Incorporated are pleased to--” Cassidy’s jaw dropped,
“Yes! Yes! Yes! I did it!”
She ran across the perfectly trimmed grass back inside.
“Mom! Mom!” She yelled through the house.
“What is it dear?” A singsong voice asked from the living room.
Cassidy rounded a staircase and sprinted into an adjacent room, trying her best not to knock anything over. Her mother was sitting on a silk sofa, dragging her finger across the smartphone in her hands.
“I got in! I got in to the Infinity scholarship program! I get to go to San Francisco to compete.”
“That’s nice, dear.” She neglected to look up.
“Can I call and tell Dad?”
“Cassidy, you know better than to call your father while he’s at work.” Cassidy’s face quickly fell.
“He always is.”
“I’m sure it can wait until he gets home tonight.”
Cassidy rolled her eyes, trudging out of the living room.
Meanwhile in deep water outside Galveston, Jaime Reyes heaved a large net drooping under the weight of shrimp out of the frothing waves. Then, for the billionth time that day, he emptied the net into the icebox and cast it out again. The sweltering heat forced Jaime to wipe a sheen of sweat from his forehead and flick it out into the water before gripping the line again and yanking the net back up.
The shrimp had run dry and he had to move the boat again. Jaime reached to grab a rusted key as a wave broadsided the boat, jerking Jaime off balance and sending the keys into the depths with a plunk.
“Mierda!”
Jaime took a breath and dived into the water, pushing himself deeper as he scanned the depths for the key. The sunlight made the key glimmer on the ocean floor. He dove further grabbing the old rusty key and then as he pushed off from the bottom he felt a seize in his chest and struggled not to gasp beneath the water. As he rocketed towards the surface he bumped against a mass of fiberglass making a muted thud. Frantically paddling forw

Excerpt Regarding the Boxset:
"Christmas is a drag. Year after year, winter upon winter, we find ourselves “going through the motions of merriment,” possessed by a fervent celestial fever, conquered, squandered, beaten, broken, reduced to that clammy, pre-pubescent spoiled brat kid of our childhood, throwing a fit on Santa’s lap, faced with the hard-candy facts of reality, knowing for certain we will never really get what want for Christmas.
Or in life, for that matter.
This is the true horror-show catharsis of Christmas: the existential emptiness that perseveres in the heart of modern man as he recklessly pursues his search for happiness and comes up empty handed.
And yet, against all odds, we continue to sing our songs of Christmas. If Christmas is the holiday of “worst case scenarios” then its carol has become its most corrupted currency, intoning rhapsody and romance with mistletoe and Marshmallow Fluff, placating the public with indelible melodies propagating a message of peace, love, and venture capitalism.
So what is it about Christmas music that continues to agitate our aging heartstrings? Is it the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen? Or the boundless Potential Energy inherent in this bastard holiday so fitfully exploited, adapted, and confounded with no regard for decency?
Maybe this: Christmas music does justice to a criminal world, marrying sacred and profane, bellowing obtuse prophecies of a Messiah in the very same blustery breath as a candy-coated TV-jingle advertising a string of lights and a slice of fruitcake. Gloria!
Who can save us from the infidels of Christmas commodity? Look no further, tired shopper, for your hero arrives as the diligent songwriter Sufjan Stevens: army of one, banjo in one hand, drum machine in the other, holed up in his room, surrounded by hymnals, oratorios, music charts, sacred harp books, photo-copied Readers Digest Christmas catalogs—all the weaponry of Yuletide incantations—singing his barbaric yawp above the snow-capped rooftops.
His song is love; his song is hope; h

After thinking it over, I realized that I never properly watched all of Peter Capaldi's run as the Doctor from start to finish. So, starting with Deep Breath, I have been working out to series 8 so far and thought I'd compile a personal review of the episodes and series as a whole here. This is a long post so I have a review for the series as a whole at the bottom.
