Added lyrics and some copium to the Mikasa, Aaron & Chad Eren fanimation

FYI, I looked up the lyrics to the song in the fanimation video of Mikasa, Aaron and Chad Eren and I see why it fits. Added my interpretative comments below for some fun copium.

Original post with video and lyrics in comments here https://www.reddit.com/r/yeagerbomb/comments/meaihn/masterpiece/

Song: "How You Like That"

Artist: BLACKPINK

I crumbled before your eyes << Eren to his friends

Hit rock bottom and sunk deeper << Eren's state of mind

To grab onto the last bit of hope << Mikasa to Eren

I've tried to reach out with both my hands << Eren to friends and vice versa; or Mikasa to Eren

Again, in this dark place, light up the sky << Mikasa's dream

While looking into your eyes, I'll kiss you goodbye << Mikasa's necro kiss on Eren's severed head

Laugh all you want while you still can << Jägerists & EH fans to Alliance cucks & EM fans

Because it's about to be your turn, one, two, three << Jägerists & EH fans to Alliance cucks & EM fans

Ha, how you like that? (Ah)

You gon' like that, that-that-that, that, that-that-that, that

How you like that? (Bada bing, bada boom, boom, boom) << What Jägerists & EH fans be singing when Kino ending happens

How you like that, that-that-that, that, that-that-that, that << What Jägerists & EH fans be singing when Kino ending happens

Now, look at you, now look at me (Uh) << Chad Eren to Mikasa, Armin and all his haters, lol

Look at you, now look at me (Uh)

Look at you, now look at me

How you like that << Chad Eren

Now, look at you, now look at me (Uh)

Look at you, now look at me (Uh)

Look at you, now look at me

How you like that?

Your girl needs it all and that's a hundred << Jägerists & EH fans to EM Fans...

10 out of 10, I want what's mine << EH fans want Kino

Karma come and get some << Jägerists to Alliance

I feel bad, but there's nothing I can do << Eren, and some readers, lol

What's up? I'm right back << Eren fighting back

Trigger the cock back ("Cock back the trigger" in English)

Plain Jane get hijacked, don't like me? << Mikasa getting cucked; loves Aaron not Eren

Then tell me, how you like that, like that? *<< Jäg

I love comedies & romcoms, but I feel like I've watched most of them - any recommendations? Anything like 13 Going 30, Can't Buy Me Love?

For the past two years I've been watching as many comedies and romcoms and other enjoyable genre films I can find. I've been really sick, my health is declining so movie watching has the only thing that has kept me sane. Comedies-Romcoms, or other heartful films really make me happy so I'm hoping I can hear more recommendations since I feel like I'm running out of what to watch. I don't mind how bad a comedy is either, as long as it's just not super, plain, unrecoverable bad.

Recommendations don't have to be comedies or romcoms either, any genre works as long as it's super interesting, or heartful. Like the other day I enjoyed watching Cars (Disney) even as an adult.

These are the films I have seen already (some that I really loved too) Press alt + f to search a movie title. Easier to see if it's been listed already.

I'm hoping to find recommendations that aren't these movies. For those who like recommendations, feel free to use the list.

  • Pretty Woman (1990) - All time favourite.

  • Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - I just discovered this film two days ago, I loved it. I'm hoping to find more films like this. I'm a sucker for the whole 80's movies with the transformations and the nerdy underdog becoming somebody. Patrick and Amanda were great, I just wish Amanda's character had more time and more of a focus. Hoping for more recommendations like this.

  • Big (1998) - Love Tom Hanks movies, love the concept since it reminded me of 13 Going 30.

  • 13 Going 30 (2004) - Still one of my all time favorites. Just love the overall concept/plot.

  • Housesitter (1992) starring Goldie Hawn & Steve Martin. The movie was dumb fun.

  • Bridesmaids (2011) - One of the best.

  • Bedazzled (2000) starring Elizabeth Hurley & Bredan Fraser. I've seen all the Bedazzled films, and I found this one hysterical. Elizabeth Hurley's performance as the devil was incredible, and Bredan Fraser was so good too. Loved it. The whole plot in general was dumb fun.

  • Kate and Leopold (2001) - Reminds me of Enchanted. Hugh and Meg were awesome in it. Interesting concept, like the whole back in time thing too.

  • Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) & sequels

  • Notting Hill (1999) - Concept of this whole thing was fun. I like plots like this.

  • The Heartbreak Kid (2007) - Stupid funny. I really love Ben Stiller.

  • Meet the Parents (2000) and sequels

  • Game Night (2018)

  • Killers (2010)

  • 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

  • Overboard (1987)

  • How to Lose a Guy in 10 D

Songs that would fit in the next MCU movies (and shows)

For a while now, I've been building a list of songs that would be a great fit in the future MCU soundtracks because a small percentage of what makes the MCU great is the fact that they add some pretty decent music to their movies.

So far, here's my list of some songs that I dream of hear in the MCU. Might add more later on.

For Doctor Strange Into The Multiverse Of Madness: Mambo Sun by T Rex (because Doctor Strange is namechecked in the song, would be a good fit for the opening title sequence. Seriously. This is a wasted opportunity for a fitting opening title song if they don't use this one)

Welcome To My Nightmare by Alice Cooper (if it is true that Nightmare is going to be the main villain, then this song would fit right in because the sound, lyricism, and theme of dreams would be a match made in heaven. Perhaps it could be used for a trailer.)

End Of The Night or Strange Days by The Doors (the organ alone gives a chilling effect and could work in a nightmare scene at some point)

Red Light by Siouxsie And The Banshees (it's eerie sound would probably make the movie a little more intense and thrilling)

Night Time, My Time by Sky Ferreira (same reason as Red Light, End Of The Night, and Strange Days)

Intruder by Peter Gabriel, Evening Of Light, and/or Saeta by Nico (same reason as Red Light)

If Only Tonight We Could Sleep by The Cure (if there is a scene involving The Ancient One guiding Doctor Strange to defeat Nightmare, this song should play in the background)

Cat People (Putting Out Fire) or Love Is Lost by David Bowie (could be used for some sort of scene preparing for the final battle)

The Light Pours Out Of Me by Magazine (great song for the final battle sequence. I can picture Wanda being pushed to her limit and her eyes just glow, fueled by anger, and she just comes back with vengence at full power as this song plays out)

Sanity Assassin by Bauhaus (same as Welcome to my Nightmare, and would be great for the end credits)

On a side hope: since Sam Raimi is directing this, I'd love to have Danny Elfman do the score for the film. = ^ )

For Guardians Of The Galaxy 3: Virginia Plain by Roxy Music (could be used for the opening sequence)

Cars by Gary Numan, I Can't Take It or No Matter What, and/or Baby Blue by Badfinger (seems like a perfect fit because they sound like tunes that Quill would appreciate.)

Vitamin C by Can (I picture Groot dancing to this funky psych-rocker being played in the background)

Third Stone From The Sun by

Thoughts on every James Bond film

So in April, I decided to watch every Bond film from "From Russia with Love" to "Spectre". I had already seen Dr. No for a english assignment last year and while I enjoyed the film didn't feel the need to rewatch it. So here are my thoughts:

Dr. No - A great start to the Bond franchise that is introduces a lot of the classic elements, including "Bond, James Bond", Girls and cold kills. The film is quite quaint by modern standards but is still fun to watch. I will say the second half of the opening is just plain odd though, why after the James Bidn theme am I hearing bongos?. I will say that I wish we saw more of Dr. No than we do in the actual film, as, but otherwise Jospeh Wiseman gives a great performance. Overall 7.5/10

From Russia with Love - Okay this one just got better as it went along. While the pre-title sequence isn't bad we don't actually get to bond for a bit of the film and it does drag a bit. I also love that in the second movie we're already trying to play with the fact that Bond loves to sleep with women. I also find it funny that Robert Shaw looks awfully similar to Daniel Craig. Even with that though Red Grant still delievrs a codl performance that leads to one of the best fight scenes in cinema Overall 8.5/10

Goldfinger - I love this one so much. From a great villain to the DB5 to the iconic imagery and the brilliant henchman in Oddjob. This film gets nearly everything right and I have very few problems with the film as a whole. My only qualm is the barn scene where it appears that Bond may have raped Pussy galore, but that really didn't hinder my enjoyment very much as all. Where my love for the films was truly cemented for the film was for this quote "Did you expect to me to Live?" "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die".Also my favourite character is introduced in this film: Q. The way Desmond Lleweyn plays this character is perfect and I really did not want anyone to replace him. Goldfinger is almsot flawless 9/10

Thunderball - This is where the franchise really went downhill for me. What really annoys me about this film is the first half hour is a complete waste of time that we didn't need. We could have easily started just at scene where Bond is meeting with leaders of the world and M and it still wouldn't affect your understanding of the film. Even after that, so much of the film just feels like wasted potential. The only good part of the film are probably about half the girls, Sean Connery and the one Q scene. The Underwater scene

Tori songs RANKED!!!

Hi fellow E’sWF!!! I ranked all of Tori’s songs because I love making lists! I’ve seen a few people make these lists on this page, so I thought I’d join in the fun. Curious what y’all think! Where is YOUR favorite song numbered at? Do you see anything that you vehemently disagree with? Please share!

And FYI, please know that songs near the bottom of the list are by no means considered to be "bad" songs. Actually, I don't believe Tori has ever written a downright bad song. So, the ones at the bottom are more the equivalent of a C+. No Ds or Fs! I just don't think she has ever put out something that is pure garbage when looking at her collection objectively.

I left out all songs from Midwinter Graces because it just felt right. I also left out all songs from Strange Little Girls since none of them were original Tori creations (even though 97 Bonnie and Clyde and Raining Blood would have ranked super high!) In addition, I left out everything from the 2012 release of Gold Dust except for Flavor. I felt like Flavor was really the only “new” song on that record because it was totally revamped. Lastly, I left out all studio-recorded covers such as Thank You, Angie and Smells Like Teen Spirit (even though they are lovely).

To make the list, I created different categories, such as qualities of the melodies and compositions, the overall sound of each song and to what extent it’s a unique listening (not necessarily radio-friendly or catchy) experience. I put a lot of focus on originality and creativity. That meant that some of my “least favorites” ranked sorta high in some places. I also considered the complexity and/or creativity in the lyrics. I scored each song in each category on a scale of 1-10 and added them up. This left me with five groupings of songs (highest scored, second highest and so on). THEN, I ranked each of the songs in each grouping which gave me the final list. Thank God for Excel!

I really tried to be as objective as possible in my ranking; to really try and be a critic rather than a biased fan. As fans, it's easy for us to always lean towards giving glowing reviews no matter what. That’s why I always appreciate it when fans are more critical, or when they share an opinion on a song/album that is unpopular. I’m thinking of posting my reviews of each of her albums. Let me know if y’all would be interested in reading something like that!

So yeah, staying objective was hard but I think I was successful for the most par

[The Extramundane Emancipation of Geela, Evil Sorceress at Large] --- Chapter 4: Of Hares, Hoods, and Hauntings

Synopsis: After hoodwinking Darkos, a holy priest, into escorting her back to her castle, Dark Enchantress Geela has one item left on her list: revenge on her ex-husband. With a confused Darkos in tow, she sets out. However, Geela isn't the only one with secrets. And Barney isn't the only old enemy who's about to get a visit.

They stayed in the clearing about two days before a pure white snowshoe hare hopped up to the tent one morning and began lightly thumping its foot. Geela’s eyes popped open and she sat up in her luxurious bedroll, stretching. Beside her, Darkos still slept in the meager rag he called a bed. Throughout most of their travels, she’d felt almost bad for the poor dear, lying restlessly every evening, tossing and turning as though the rocks underneath him were crawling all over his body.

But, when one day into their second journey, she’d offered to enchant his bedroll, he turned her down.

“It’s a sign of humility. We were trained at young ages to withstand punishment gladly. It doesn't keep me up.”

Not only had this last bit been a lie, but Geela had spent precious seconds of her time sympathizing only to learn he slept on pins and needles on purpose. Darkos had some nerve, taking on additional pain for the sake of a deity. This is why Geela swore off Patrons.

Ok, this was not at all why Geela had sworn off Patrons, but this kind of thing certainly contributed.

The thumping came again and Geela donned her robe before drawing open the door. The little lagomorph looked at her, its eyes glowing her signature green, indicating that it had brought her a message.

“Alright little one.” She crouched down next to it, propping her head on a hand. “What do you have for me?”

The critter looked up at her and opened its pink little mouth.

“Alright you cursed hag!” There was no mistaking Angelia’s shrill voice emitting from the adorable hare’s mouth. “What did you do to me? Of course you’d disappear after this, you second-rate magician. Fine, fine, I know

[Spoilers] The United States and Westward Expansion - Common Setting Discussions

A common trait Assassin’s Creed groups have is the constant theorizing about future settings, because historical tourism is one of the best parts of the series. This series of posts will act as a counter to my Mildly Obscure setting discussions, but rather than looking at a single point, I will be taking a broad setting that is popular and looking at several potential settings to explore within it. Today’s setting is the United States. I want to say that I personally am not a huge fan of the setting, and like WW2, worry about whether or not Ubisoft could actually tactfully do these settings, but due to the lore potential, I’m willing to discuss them. Most of these settings would suffer from issues that plagued Syndicate such as proximity to the modern-day causing fake events and characters to be made to avoid lawsuits, parkour issues from wide streets and small buildings, or painfully tall buildings, and poor weapon variety due to legal carrying restrictions.

Shays’ Rebellion

The American Revolution had a heavy toll on thousands of soldiers. Besides the loss of life and injuries, many men never received their full pay. In the early 1780s, this started to become a major issue, as men returning home from warlike Daniel Shay were being asked to pay large debts and taxes that they couldn’t afford because of the lack of pay. Many protests were held in Massachusetts from 1782 to 1785 against these taxes and to get the pay the veterans had earned. In August 1786, protestors organized to begin forcefully shutting down the courts. Government officials denounced the mob mentality but did nothing to stop it. Daniel Shays would start to organize more of these shutdowns and lead about 300 men to the Springfield Courts, which were then protected by William Shepard who held about 800 men at his command. After a day of demonstrations with no violence, Shepard led his men to the Springfield Armory due to rumors of the mob planning to attack it.
By October of 1786 more protests had successfully shut down courts in Taunton, Great Barrington, and Concord. State officials now feared the violence and the potential for civil war and Samuel Adams worked with the state officials to draft a riot act to suspend habeas corpus and imprison the rioters without a trial while advocating for the execution of anyone who tried to rebel against the republic. With the new legislation in place, several of the mov

Throwback Write-Up #8: MF DOOM - MM...FOOD

Artist: MF DOOM

Album: MM...FOOD

Introduction

MM...FOOD is Daniel Dumile’s 5th studio album, but only the 2nd album released under the MF DOOM name. The album title itself is an anagram for MF DOOM. At 15 tracks and 48 minutes long, MM...FOOD stands as one of DOOM’s most critically acclaimed releases, but is often overshadowed by its counterpart, Madvillainy. The album is themed around food, with the title, cover, song titles, lyrics, and samples all based around food or food metaphors. The project’s cover presents DOOM eating, with his son under the table also wearing a mask. DOOM’s son was known to actually wear his father’s masks, as revealed by tweets from MF GRIMM during a small dispute. The album was released on November 16th, 2004 under the Rhymesayers Entertainment label. For the sake of length and formatting, I will not be writing sections about DOOM’s origins, past, or career before 2004, and instead get right into the thick of things.

2004

2004 was DOOM’s creative peak, the only time where he would ever release 3 projects in the same year. This is not a new concept in hip-hop, as many artists have taken advantage of their peak, whether in popularity or creativity. DaBaby did this exact thing last year with Baby on Baby and KIRK. DMX did it in 1998 with Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood and It’s Dark and Hell is Hot. DOOM did it with Madvillainy in March 2004, followed up with Venomous Villain under the Viktor Vaughn alias, and finished with MM...FOOD in November. We witness DOOM in 3 completely different creative pockets here. Madvillainy was a triumph, a moment in hip-hop that showed everyone what a one rapper one producer album should sound like. On that album, DOOM is slow, cold and calculated. The production is vivid, menacing at times, but retains the balance of DOOM’s sharp-witted rhymes and supervillain inspired persona. MM...FOOD contrasts its legendary predecessor in many ways. Its much more lighthearted, more colorful, and loose. A more fair comparison would be MF DOOM’s first album, Operation: Doomsday. The album presents a much more “fun” tone, and makes an easier first listen. The album also sports plenty of silly skits, often using food-related banter or the usual Doctor Doom samples you can find on almost any DOOM albu

Virtual Drag Race All Stars 2: Episode 3- World Drag President

Auntie Pho and Sophie Violet are both hilarious on the lip sync; Aunty Pho hams it up by playing the role of someone who is far too tired to go crazy; she laughs and points to Sophie Violet multiple times, squatting, smiling and making the judges laugh their ass off. When she sits on the floor, the judges lose it. And then there's Sophie; she goes manic, jumping and twirling around pulling out all the tricks; hitting every single lyric.

Sophie Violet Cwumble... you're a winner baby!

Sophie Violet: "I... just... won a challenge! I can't believe this... it's all, everything has been worth it to get here."

Now who... gets the chop?

"I took a lot of things at the end of the day. Wike... who do I think desewves to be hewe... what is faiw.. and I decided... to make the wight choice. I am sowwy... but... I chose Pearlie."

As it is written, so it shall be done. Now Sashay... away.

"Thanks for nothing...." Pearlie shrugs and walks away.

Pearlie Gaytes: "It sucks! I had so much more to give and... Sophie made the wrong decision."

C-$alt appears Pearlie, dressed in black.

The Queens enter the werkroom.

"Goodbye Pearlie.." Tarantula sighs. "I'll miss her, but I guess she was the worst of the week..."

Annie Mae Sean: "That's a change of pace. She was all buddy buddy.. hmm.."

"It's not gweat fewwing, to be honest..." Sophie sighs. "It's hawd!"

"But at least you have won a challenge!" Lady Singh smiles. "It is.. checks and balances. Perspective."

"Exactly." Oda Nobuna responds. "Thank you for saving me Sophie. Now Aunty... give me the truth. I know you eliminated me."

"So she DOES HAVE JOKES!" Aunty laughs. "I... also chose to eliminate Pearlie. It was pretty clear from the get go.. I think it's the right attitude to have in this competition."

"I agree!" Gianna smiles.

"As do I.." Singh raises her hand.

"Me too.." Sophie smiles.

Xyla, Annie Mae, Tarantula and Oda Nobuna... remain silent.

Annie Mae Sean: "I can't say with any certainty what my decisions will be in the future... and I don't know if 'playing fair' is the correct choice.. always. But I do know one thing. It's time for Annie Mae to step things up."

"Well, it's time to de-drag!" Sophie smiles.

The Next Day,

Annie Mae Sean and Sophie Violet Cwumble are sitting together.

"I just... can't believe we are still here together." Sophie Violet grins. "I mean, you are my IDOL."

If you can't rap about popular topics without any creativity, you don't have bars, regardless of how good the beat is and how the lyrics follow the beat.

So many rappers songs today are about sex and getting money, etc, I'm sure you know this already. I don't have an issue with songs talking about these issues, but I want them to do it more creatively. Anyone can rap about having lots of sex or making lots of money, but it separates someone from the pack when they can consistently do it in new ways.

For example, two lines I can think of:

"I'll knock the shit out that bitch like an enema" -Megan Thee Stallion, Realer

Bitches must be eating ass because I swear they're bottom feeders." -Nicki Minaj, Plain Jane remix

Those lyrics just make me smile when I hear them because they were just so unexpected the first time I listened to these songs.

I want someone to tell me they made tons of money and rhyme it with Tiktaalik, or to talk about sex and compare it to the fall of Confucian ideals as Communism became more popular in China. I want lyrics that are out of pocket and that are funny.

POST HASTE or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Writing Reviews (ft. templates and some common wisdom)

Edit: Did not mean for this to be the thumbnail pic, but I don’t hate it.

Hey, dudes! A couple days ago in the DDT, u/Highclassbroque started a convo about how much time and effort it takes to produce a qualifying RL review. And our girl was not mistaken — they can be draining to write! I saw u/FDimple, u/lucyrcat, and u/ThePinkOnyx suggested some great methods to make the process a little less daunting, so I thought I’d put together a little post with some of the things you can do to make sure review-writing isn’t a chore. This is probably all old news to the RL lifers, but hopefully it’ll be of some help to our lovely newbies. If anyone has any other suggestions to make review-writing a breeze, I’d love to include them. I think we can all agree that reviews are among this sub’s greatest assets, and we would all love to see more of them!

##1. Use a template.

As I’m sure most of you know, the wiki has a link to a Google Docs Review template with all the proper Reddit formatting. You just have to fill in the blanks, then copy/paste to the body of your Reddit post. However, I’ve noticed in the comments of many reviews that, even when the formatting was aces from the get, the mods often have to ask for more detailed quality and accuracy assessments before approving the post. Below are the templates I made for myself to make sure I’m hitting all the relevant points of interest. They are a little plain Jane as is, but you can jazz ‘em up to your heart’s content with emojis, different headers, and a meme or two (I personally tend to get very freaky with it). And of course feel free to tweak the categories to suit the rep at hand. Maybe your Lady Dior needs an Accuracy section devoted to just the handles, or you want to add an extra bullet exclusively for the discussion of your Louboutin’s toe cleavage.

Bag Review Template

Shoe Review Template

##2. Start writing while your shit is still in China.

  • Fill in basic info like seller, factory, price, payment method, and shipping carrier as soon as you’ve placed your order.

  • Fill in the timeline as each step is completed.

  • Upload authentic references, factory phot

The April 2020 Criterion Channel Bundles

The April Bundles:

Wednesday, April 1
Toshiro Mifune Turns 100
Featuring a new introduction by critic Imogen Sara Smith and the 2015 documentary Mifune: The Last Samurai

Akira Kurosawa once said, “The ordinary Japanese actor might need ten feet of film to get across an impression. Toshiro Mifune needed only three feet.” However, the filmmaker certainly gave Mifune—born on April 1, 1920—a lot of space: over the course of sixteen indelible collaborations, the actor and the director created some of the most dynamic characters ever put on-screen, all marked by an explosive physicality, live-wire intensity, and surprising tenderness. Discovered by Kurosawa during an open audition at Toho Studios, Mifune would go on to inhabit a wide variety of roles—from gangsters to samurai to salarymen—in the director’s greatest films, masterpieces like Stray Dog, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, The Bad Sleep Well, and High and Low. Further cementing his status as an icon of Japanese cinema with his commanding turns in classics by Kenji Mizoguchi, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Hiroshi Inagaki, Mifune left behind a formidable legacy as one of the most electrifying performers of the twentieth century.

Album of the Year 2018 #7: Nicki Minaj - Queen

Re-posting this from /r/popheads so the format might be a little bit different from what you're used to seeing. Sorry about that!

Artist: Nicki Minaj

Album: Queen

Label: Young Money

Released: June 15th, 2018 August 10th, 2018

Listen:

Spotify

Apple Music

Google Play

Tidal

Background

Onika Tanya Maraj has quickly built a reputation as a strong force in both the pop and hip-hop communities. As the most well known and best selling female rapper ever, Nicki has broken boundaries in the rap scene and has opened the gate for more female rappers to do so and achieve mainstream success. Now, with the rise of a new female rapper, Nicki sets to defend her reputation as the Queen of Rap with the release of her 4th studio album Queen.

Intro

Interesting to note, this is Nicki's first album without the work pink in the title, along with the cover not having any pink on it either. I believe this to be because Nicki has always used the colour pink to display femininity and assert herself specifically as a female rapper. With the title Queen, there is no need to do so since the title is inherently feminine. Ugh her mind is so powerful.

For this write-up I thought it'd be interesting to take a bit of a different approach: Nicki has always had visuals play a huge part in her career, and so with enough stretching you can kind of see this album as a visual album. If Halsey can call hopeless fountain kingdom a visual album then I can do the same with Queen (ily Halsey).

Tracklist

Ganja Burn

We find ourselves at the ruins of where a kingdom once stood, the Queen is long gone and her name is long forgotten. But there are whispers of her return. The Queen, risen from her 3 year slumber and with an army like none other is prepared to take back the throne.

Ganja Burn is the opening track of the album Reflective, Nicki details her downfall, and most importantly how she plans to make her revival known and inescapable. Incorporating both singing and rapping, Nicki appears at her most vulnerable

I just now finished surprise-binging the whole anime in one sitting. Where chapter should I pick up in the manga?

This show was amazing. I just saw the r/anime post about 5ch's best anime of the decade, saw a cute magical girl as their #1 pick for 2019, and had to figure out what show it was. I love magical girl characters and the aesthetic, but I'm not actually into plain jane magical girl shows themselves, you know? I love Lyrical Nanoha and Madoka Magica for instance, but not really into Sailor Moon and what not.

Anyway, it was mentioned that this show was some sort of comedy slice of life. And this show definitely is not a slice of life in all but the most loose usage of the term. It's amazing! It's plot rich, SO MANY LITTLE CALLBACKS to prior scenes. It is absolutely masterfully written. It moves a mile a minute, I was only bored for maybe 5 minutes of the whole thing. I haven't found an anime with a such thoughtful plot and world building since Re:Zero first aired.

Is the manga as good as the show? I understand it's a 4 panel comic type thing, which makes me wonder then if the show just took a lot of liberties with the source material and happened to produce something with such clarity of prose. I think I'm going to be plotting writing a fanfic for this the rest of the week.

Oh and the title question, if I continue with reading the manga, what chapter should I start on to continue where the show left off? And is the manga/4-koma as good or better then the show? Has a 2nd season been announced already by chance? >!I really need to see Momo become a Vassal to Shadow Mistress Yuko (And the way they played up the romance of the moment, I not-so-secretly hope that such a deal is sealed with a kiss)!!<

[Spoilers] Review/discussion about: Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.

MAL Link: Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.

Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, School, Shounen

Legal Streaming: HiDive

Prologue: Just a dude looking to get better at reviewing/analyzing anime. I hope you enjoy the review and the discussion that follows! Critiques are welcome.

Whether direct or not, we all eventually learn of a biological truth: “the birds and the bees”.

And for the ladies of Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo., evolution chirps and buzzes.

STORY

In a normal town with a normal school, five young women are in their beloved literature club where they share their favorite passages. Yet Kazusa, Rika, Hitoha, Momoko, and Niina are keenly aware of the more risqué words they read at times. It follows, then, that their thoughts drift towards that act which has saved lives and crumbled empires: sex. Minds now “tainted”, Araburu kicks off this wild coming-of-age story.

And it does so with poise and with expertise. For instance, the anime understands that such a topic cannot escape from inherent awkwardness, so it embraces its sillier side. Sharp comedic timing, wordplay, metaphors, and jokes offset the subject with laughs without taking away from its more serious dramatic elements.

Especially because this other half matters just as much to Araburu. Yes, Rika providing newfound romantic wisdom, only for Momoko to reach the exact same conclusion in a few words of her own, strikes at comedy gold while simultaneously hinting at the simplified complexity these emotions carry. But that animalistic urge likewise becomes the very driving force for their individual troubles, any interpersonal conflicts, and the all-encompassing themes of the anime.

The drama most often revolves around their respective relationships. Be it Hitoha’s attempts at ill-fated trysts with Tomoaki or the difficult love triangle between Kazusa, Izumi, and Niina, the show creates scenarios ranging in tension and elation. Thus, where the comedy supplements those embarrassing parts, the drama reminds the audience of the realer, more grounded paths they take.

All the while, its themes on sex and maturity earn their writing chops, exploring as much as it can through definitive scenes and developmental milestones. Differences between sexual and emotional interest. Sexuality itself. What sex really is and means for those involv

Trivia items I often confuse - Feel free to add your own

Here are some things I often confuse. I'm hoping that writing them down will help them stick (though I doubt it).

Anyone want to share some things that often confuse them?

All information below is available at: http://www.trivialstudies.com/confused.php

🔆 Thomas Becket (1119-1170) - Archbishop of Canterbury under Henry II. There was a dispute because Henry wanted to extend his authority over the Church. Four of Henry's barons killed Becket in the Canterbury Cathedral.

🔆 Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) - Saint from Aquino, Italy. Influential philosopher and theologian. Embraced the ideas of Aristotle. Wrote "Summa Theologiae" (1485).

🔆 Thomas More (1478-1535) - Councillor to Henry VIII. Refused to annul Henry's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, convicted of treason, and executed. Wrote the satire "Utopia" describing a fictional island society in the south Atlantic Ocean (which also coined the "utopia").

🔳 "The Portrait of a Lady" - Henry James, 1881 - A spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer, who, in "confronting her destiny", finds it overwhelming.

🔳 "The Picture of Dorian Gray" - Oscar Wilde, 1890 - "Dorian Gray" expresses the desire to sell his soul to ensure that his portrait, rather than he, will age and fade.

🔳 "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" - James Joyce, 1916 - Young Stephen Dedalus, a fictional alter-ego of Joyce, rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe.

💠 Henry Fielding (1707-1754) - English dramatist known for humor and satire. Also important to law enforcement; as a magistrate founded what some have called London's first police force, the Bow Street Runners. "Tom Jones" (1749)

💠 Henry James (1843-1916) - Born in NY, settled in London. Wrote about interplay between Americans, English, continental Europeans. "The Portrait of a Lady" (1881), "The Wings of the Dove" (1902), and "The Ambassadors" (1903)

My (23/F) boyfriend (24/M) never tells me I'm attractive but always talks about how intelligent and thoughtful I am... am I asking too much?

Hello. let's get right into it. I met Richard on Tinder about 7 months ago and for all intents and purposes it's going well. Very well, actually. We've booked our first holiday and we do talk about the future whilst acknowledging it's still a while off... so yeah all good on that front! There is just one issue, and that's that I don't think he finds me attractive at all. And I've brought this up with him, but he doesn't really seem to care. I should add that I look exactly the same as I did when we first met, bar from getting a hair trim of about 3 inches.

A bit of background on me. I have a Master's in History and will be commencing a PhD on a fully funded scholarship in Political Science in October. In the meantime I work as an advertising manager. Richard knows this and always makes a point to tell me how intelligent, funny and thoughtful I am. When I first met his parents, they were asking about my PhD and it seems like he'd really waxed lyrical about me to them on my goals and aspirations as well as my current achievement. Great, right? One thing he never does though, is tell me I'm attractive.

This wouldn't be so much of a problem if he hadn't made a point of telling me that his ex girlfriend is a Miss England finalist, and that he mainly stayed with her because she was so beautiful. I can count on one hand the amount of times he's called me 'pretty', never once 'beautiful'. I'm a fairly conventionally attractive woman; 5'7, size UK 10/US 6 and athletic due to years of distance running and resistance training. On the whole I'm fairly happy with my appearance (this does mean that I do have my moments where I really don't), and I'm never short of compliments on my appearance from others. So I know I am attractive, but it's as if Richard doesn't see it.

I brought this up to him about a week after he mentioned his ex for the first time (about December?) and I won't lie that it did cause a huge dip in my self image... I think the words I said to him were along the lines of "if you've gone from Miss England to me, people must look at us and think... oh god what's he doing with someone as plain and average as her?!" and his response was "well, I don't care what people think". Since then he's never really said that he finds me attractive even when I've brought it up with him. We had a discussion (I think argument is a bit strong) one time when I'd mentioned I was about to head off to the gym and for whatever reason his response was "yeah go make that a

Systemic Models of Tanith

What’s the word for a gang of silly princes? Let’s call it a ‘prance’.

In Tanith Lee’s first novel, ‘The Dragon Hoard’, a prance of princes sit trapped at a magical feast. A mad wizard declares they must tell a story. When the story stops, they’ll plunge to their deaths. The hero rushes into an absurd Once-Upon-A-Time about a princess named Soppy… till he stutters. Writers block! What now? Cleverly, he passes the story to the next prince. Who adds an enchanted elephant, then hands the narrative to the next prince, who tangles the plot with twins, then the elephant comes rushing through, Princess Soppy on his back…

‘The Dragon Hoard’ was fairy-tale riffing to make kids giggle, grownups smile. The first of 90+ novels, hundreds of short-stories by Lee. Some for smiles; others for shivers. Some for dark dreams, others for bright amaze. Her dragon-hoard of tales spark every reaction words can send down the spine, across the cortex or below the belt. Masterfully composed pieces in every key of the fantasy voice. I say it plain: no other writer hits every note across the fantasy musical-scale from comic to epic, horror to erotic, lyrical to classical, and yet keeps the level of quality achieved only by the genre specialists.

Let’s use that mad feast of tales as model for Ms. Lee’s books. Pass on to the next prince! Lee’s second novel: “The Birthgrave”. Just the title evokes eerie recognition. A child-woman awakes in a tomb; flees as it collapses. She has no memory of who or what she is, only the heart-breaking conviction she is a lost thing, cursed in soul and face. Veiled, she wanders a world exactly like herself; cruel, mysterious, and haunted by the spirit of a vanished race, a forgotten face.

“Birthgrave” was inspired by dreams Lee had as a teen. We’ve all had those dreams; taunting us with ineffable meanings. And when we described them at the breakfast table, glazing all eyes, we learned the meaning of ‘ineffable’. Narrated, dreams are weird and dull. The ability to turn the dross of sleep into first-class fantasy is talent equal to spinning straw to gold. “Birthgrave” is Lee’s most discussed work. As with the worlds of Tolkien, Le Guin, and Norton, it gives the eerie shiver that we know this dream, have walked those ruins. We too have stood before a mirror hearing the whisper of a voice that hates us, daring us to give in to the dark power we hold back…

Fantasy is so often about seeking the power within. God-authors temper thei

Kylo Ren and the Revival of the Byronic Hero

[Very long tl;dnr warning.]

With the recent release of The Last Jedi, I've decided to do a few in-depth analyses of one of its most popular characters: Kylo Ren. More specifically, in this analyses, I wanted to discuss Kylo's character development and presentation in The Last Jedi, and how he represents a once-popular archetype known as "the Byronic Hero".

For those of you unfamiliar with literature, "the Byronic Hero" is a trope based on, and attributed largely to, the English Romantic-era poet Lord Byron (1788 - 1824). Byron himself was well-known, and well-respected, during his time as both an author and a poet, as well as one of the leading figures of the Romantic era of modern literature. Among his best-known works are the lengthy narrative poems Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, as well as the short lyric poem "She Walks in Beauty".

According to one source:

> Although Byron was always surrounded by people, he was seen as a lonely man who brooded over his past, indulged in self-criticism, and behaved in a reckless manner, which got him in all sorts of trouble.

> Some of his friends abandoned him, as public opinion was more important for them than friendship with an imprudent writer. Broken ties with people whom he had known for years resulted in the feeling of alienation, which Byron shared with his heroes.

> But Byron always had to take into consideration the public's taste and make the hero appealing to his admirers; this is why the Byronic hero changed over time. But Byron still pushed the limits with the public's acceptance of villainous, unsympathetic, and selfish characters.

> Although not identical, Byron and the Byronic hero display many similarities; the line between the creator and creation is very thin. (Source)

Some have classified "the Byronic hero" archetype as a "variant of the Romantic hero", while others have claimed the term to be "a variant of the anti-hero or even the villain, albeit portrayed as the hero of his own tale". Both are also applicable when it comes to Kylo Ren, which I shall discuss further as to why.

Firstly, I will present the "classical" view of "the Byronic hero", as presented by Byron himself.

> The Byronic hero first appears in Byron's semi-autobiographical epic narrative poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812–1

(Spoilers Extended) Blasphemous Song Of Long Night: Last Hero And the Death Of Daenerys Targaryen

....

> Night gathers, and now my watch begins.

>I am the sword in the darkness (Lightbringers are created).

>I am the watcher on the walls (Black Gate/Weirwood Central).

>I am the fire that burns against the cold (Massive sacrificial pyre is organized),

>the light that brings the dawn (Dawn/Sword Of The Morning is created),

>the horn that wakes the sleepers (Joramun's horn is created),

>the shield that guards the realms of men (The Wall is built).

The answers in this post and others in the series were partially inspired by a very basic question which I had while reading the books: If Long Night was such a catastrophe, if the Night's Watch was created specifically as a defense against the Others, against the Long Night, why does nobody remember anything about it? Let all of Westeros forget about the Long Night, but the Night's Watch should remember.

At least remember how to fight them!

What the Night's Watch should have done was to make every damn man of the Night's Watch memorise how to kill Others and how to prevent them from returning the moment they join the Night's Watch. They could forget their mother's name, they could forget their own name, but they should never ever have been allowed to forget how the Others can be killed.

I kept on thinking maybe it is memorised in songs such as "And the Night Ended". And the reason GRRM is not giving its lyrics away is because we will know the ending. And then it struck me. There is one song that every member of the Night's Watch does know, something even we know.

And apparently GRRM spent days getting its words right. Believe it or not, I got to know of the vow of Night's Watch being his favourite words 3 months after I came up with all below, thus confirming my hypothesis that the words of the Night's Watch vow do indeed hide the story of how the Long Night was ended:

> What is your favorite line you’ve ever written? I certainly like ‘Stick ’em with the pointy end.’ And it’s more than one line, but I like the ‘Oath of the Night’s Watch.’ I revised it a number of times, polished it to get it exactly how I wanted it and to this day, it still gives me goosebumps when I hear it

With this backdrop, let' get cracking to the ending of Long Night. Needless to say, if GRRM gets goosebumps from the words, the implications aren't all that pretty or heroic, no pun intended.

[DISCUSSION] My Top Twenty Five Favorite Albums of September 2017

September is pretty definitively in my eyes the best month of the year so far in terms of music releases. So much so, in fact, there have been a lot of big releases I passed over in order to get this list out at all. METZ, Wolf Alice, Motorpsycho, Phoebe Bridgers, Leyland Kirby’s ninety minute album under his own name, even Benjamin Clementine I unfortunately missed as a result of such a fantastic and varied month.

This entire list is here to convince you that I spent my time wisely. Let’s hope I succeed in doing so. If not, I’ll always have the end of the year to catch up.

Oh, and I decided to not include album covers for the sake of saving ten to twenty minutes of my time. If you really miss them, just let me know and I’ll bring them back for the next installment.

#WORTH YOUR TIME (BUT NOT ON THE LIST)

Death from Above - Outrage! Is Now (Indie Rock)

Of course even in not having the time for METZ, I did explore some of my own country’s more acclaimed releases, and this happened to be one of them. Nothing mind-blowing, both in and out of the context of the band’s previous work, but the energetic and punk leanings of the group bring with them some fun tracks worth trying.

Favorite Track: Statues

Sparks - Hippopotamus (Art Pop)

Legends in the history of art pop, Sparks’ new album can feel inconsistent and self-indulgent, but their most extravagant levels of experimentation show not only the influence the group has had over the years, but also the appeal that brought them their acclaim in the first place.

Favorite Track: What the Hell Is It This Time?

Kedr Livanskiy - Ariadna (Outsider House)

This Russian electronic artist doesn’t always have the depth and subversion of the artists that preceded her, but her grasp on house and pop music sometimes flow together quite comfortably and makes for some wonderful atmospheric tracks. I am really excited for what she does next, and maybe she’ll go down the route of Jane Weaver, or go fully into the abstract for later releases. But for now, Ariadna is a decent album with a tremendous amount of paths for her future.

Favorite Track: Your Name

Deerhoof - Mountain Moves (Indie Rock)

The prolific and well-liked Deerhoof collaborate with a number of artists on this newest album, including Juana Molina and Xenia Rubinos, for a weaker but daring album in their catalogue. Rare/Obscure Animal Collective Songs

Inspired by the discussion of Happy Singing Band, I'm going to share some of the more obscure Animal Collective related songs.

Although we've done these topics before, I've noticed a few new users who pop up frequently here so I'm going to share some rarely played and more unknown Animal Collective releases. Most of these were played live <5 times, some were played only once. The stuff that isn't live clips were played on rare compilation or overseas releases. This is roughly chronological as well. Not necessarily when they were written but when they were released.

I'm only including SOLO stuff or stuff where at least two members of Animal Collective are involved, so no Avey+Kria, no TT, no Jane, etc.

Also, some of these I have to guess whether or not Geo and Deakin were playing. Geo randomly played some shows in 2004, for example despite working on Capitol Hill at the time, so I don't know for a fact if he was ACTUALLY there. Some of the band members' presences are guesses, although Avey + Panda is present in every single recording except for Noah's Ark and the Deakin Avey Kria show and Seeing Twinkles.

Forest Children Risen 2001, Avey and Panda, From a Japanese Compilation album Parallel Universe of Exterior and Interior

In the City That Reads 2002, (Avey, Panda, Geo, Deakin), from the Arto Lindsay album Invoke

I Remember Learning How To Dive and 3 Untitled Songs February 2002, PANDA AND DEAKIN!!! performing as Noah's Ark, only performed these untitled songs once.

Ice Cream Factory March 2002, Avey, Panda, Geo, Deakin, played ~3 times on the second leg of the HCTI tour, released on Animal Crack Box

Don't Believe the Pilot 2003, Avey and Panda, played a few times on the European Sung Tongs tour in early to mid 2003

Guadaloops (also I had to upload this for you guys because no one felt it was worthwhile enough to put on Youtube) 2003, Avey and Panda, played once for Los Angeles radio show "Dublab"

Tuvin 2003, Avey and Panda, played a few times in late 2003 and a recording played on a radio show in 2004.

[Spoilers] Review/discussion about: Koufuku Graffiti

MAL link to Koufuku Graffiti

Prologue: Just a dude looking to get better at reviewing/analyzing anime. I hope you enjoy the review and the discussion that follows! Critiques are welcome.

A basic need for all humans is food. It gives us the calories to expend the energy required to move the muscles we have to do the activities that get us through our daily lives. And it doesn't matter what it is; be it a platter of chicken tenders or a cold bowl of ice cream, it's food that helps us to live. My own parents' specialty is a pork-infused hamburger cooked to perfection. Eating it not only tastes amazing but also reminds me of something important: that sharing a meal with the people we care about adds its own kind of flavor. This is the very message that Koufuku Graffiti provides – with some good looking but rather bland eats along the way.

STORY

Graffiti stars middle school girl Ryou, who currently lives by her lonesome after her grandmother recently passed away. One day, her second-cousin Kirin arrives to go to the same prep school as Ryou, leading to many wonderful moments.

What's interesting about Graffiti's premise is that it is all about the food. And initially, this seems to only be in relation to its looks and the way in which it is eaten. While this is certainly part of the appeal -- and aides in making one hungry while watching -- the food serves a greater purpose. And that is in both providing the various slice-of-life antics and in generating the themes that the show hones in on. Starting with the former, it practically comes naturally given the format. Eating meals or having stuff to eat is often done during special occasions and with people close to you. As such, the various happenings in the show follow this concept. From a tiny pizza party to a sandwich picnic, Ryou and Kirin find themselves not only enjoying nice little meals but also enjoying each other's company while partaking in these delights. The anime can dip dangerously into repetition, but in an attempt to break up the monotony, the show aims at introducing both comedy and different foods whenever it can. It's never dramatic, instead relying on the show's overall cuteness and light-hearted (and heavy stomached) approach to make the separate scenarios gain an aroma of pleasantness that is as nice as the food in which it showcases. And by focusing on different meals, it allows for Graffiti to tackle its themes in slightly s

Background/Description (courtesy of allmusic.com)

Ohio natives turned West Coast underground kings, Tha Alkaholiks have long been one of hip-hop's best-kept secrets: hilarious lyrical acrobats who have never received the critical or commercial support they deserve. Assembled by gangsta rapper King Tee, they offer a witty, anarchic, and party-friendly alternative to the stone-faced, largely humorless gangsta rap that ruled the West Coast throughout much of the early '90s. With the punch lines and comic timing of comedians and undeniable skills and killer delivery of topnotch MCs, rappers J-Ro and Tash have more than enough talent and energy to back up their endlessly clever boasting. Producer, DJ, and occasional MC, E-Swift is the group's secret weapon, an unjustly underrated beatsmith whose rubbery grooves and infectious production help make Tha Alkaholiks perhaps the greatest party group in hip-hop history. With titles like "Last Call," "Mary Jane," and "Only When I'm Drunk," Tha Alkaholiks will never be mistaken for members of some sort of latter-day temperance movement, but their music, rhymes, and beats are so irreverent, infectious, and just plain fun that their booze-loving shtick never gets old. Brief (only ten songs) and filler-free, 21 & Over is perhaps the quintessential West Coast party album, as well as one of the most promising debut albums of the '90s, reg

If I could say what I want to say to you -face to face- poetically:

Dear Plain Jane,

I’ve been thinking a lot about what women have been taught... Actually, I must- it’s just I have to clarify: “what I’ve been taught.” You see I’ve grown up in a weird environment and I didn’t really know it was weird until I was out of it, and I mean way out of it. My mother suffered from Manic Bipolar Disorder (back when that just meant crazy, extreme moods, and often thoughts of suicide and harm— so like 1998?) alcoholism and substance abuse. I would leave it there, as self explanatory, but her parents were cult-style religious... the weird kind. That protest about gay marriage and thou shall love thy neighbor in the same sentence, kind. Hand out song lyrics at Easter dinner, and long awkward prayers about plenty abound, and everyone is- you know- basically going to hell. So, I was sheltered, and put in awful situations, all at once; at the same time... Still don’t quite understand? Okay, let me explain:

I grew up on the right side of the town, but slept in the wrong neighborhood. I would be left Friday night at houses with people I didn’t know until Sunday morning, when my mother would roll up in her blue escort, stoned and hung over wearing a belly shirt with beads, and we’d take gravel to church. She would sit with her parents and I would sit with my dads mom, and get candy and listen to my fat uncle preach about burning bushes and god’s wrath. Then after church, my mom would pass out in front of the register vent, no matter the season. And she would sleep for hours. I remember this. Even when I wasn’t supposed to, and that was how my childhood was spent. I grew up very aware of everyone and everything. I picked up on subtle mannerisms that often go unnoticed, because I grew up as prey. As bait.

This is where it stops. I’ve started and stopped, and erased and thought. And I can’t ever. Ever. Get past this. That. I can’t describe it in words. What I went through. What I seen. What was done to me. Even anonymous... even alone. There are no words. Only pictures. Memories I can never share. This started out so promising! Invading every thought, spreading like a disease. You’re supposed to be dead! You’re dead. But, you’re not really dead, are you!? Nah. You’re there. Some where, in the in-between- the you and me, and the me.. and me. And when people ask me how you’re doing, I still respond with: She’s great.

It’s funny, I’ve always put you on a pedestal, labeled you as a saint.. I wasn’t using metaphors when I explained to you

Review/discussion about: Watamote

MAL link to Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui!

Prologue: Just a dude looking to get better at reviewing/analyzing anime. I hope you enjoy the review and the discussion that follows! Critiques are welcome.

Growing up as a kid entails many different aspects. How many friends do I have? What is the next event to go to? Does the girl from my math class have an interest in me? In short, many teenagers worry about their "popularity." Because being popular nets you more of everything that high school life has to offer. Watamote is such a story of obtaining this ever-wanted goal, but with a rather unorthodox spin.

STORY

Watamote features Tomoko, a young girl just starting her high school life. Not wanting to stick to the past, she decides she will take measures to eventually become as popular as she aims to be.

It becomes rather apparent rather quickly that such a feat for her is nigh impossible. Without a doubt, this is by far the most cringe-inducing show I have ever seen. Every episode is filled with moments that depict Tomoko attempting to increase her status in the social hierarchy, but with the result always ending in failure. This is not a joke. Every single time she is raised up, even slightly, she is immediately beaten back down past where she started. In this regard, the show actually does a surprisingly good job of varying up the many different situations that Tomoko finds herself in. And because of this, you are constantly feeling extremely awkward with what is going on, in a good way.

Now, something that the show aims to do is to showcase or at least demonstrate this type of person. There are people out there like this, who cannot express their feelings, talk with other people easily, or who are constantly trying to make their lives better. Are they all as far left as Tomoko is? Certainly not; she is the epitome of what it means to be a recluse. But this is a start. While you may not believe that everyday people are struggling with similar issues as her, Watamote wants you to realize that these people do exist, who do have incredible difficulty when it comes to making the "correct" choices in every day life.

One of the interesting things that the show brings to light is both the way in which it begins and the way in which it ends. That is, essentially what happens doesn't matter. You might be asking yourself, "Doesn't this co

Converge - A Beginner's Guide [PART 3]

This is PART 3 in a 4 part series. If you'd like to start from the beginning, click here.

This section will cover Converge's ALBUMS from 2004's You Fail Me up to 2017's The Dusk In Us. Please see the previous part for their earlier records.

You Fail Me – 2004

I definitely advise new listeners to listen to the ‘Redux’ version over the original - or at least at the same time as original, so you can understand why it’s better – as the Redux is clearer, has more low end and overall is just a better, more satisfying mix. While the original version isn’t bad, the band (specifically Kurt Ballou) have expressed that it could have come out even better than it already was. Kurt said that “Sonically, I wanted to make it fit more logically between Jane Doe and No Heroes” - which I think is achieved on the Redux version perfectly. It’s also got a more consistent tone throughout the track listing, and it added an extra song – Wolves At My Door. It’s a killer track, go check it out.
When I was getting into Converge, I was listening to albums randomly without guidance, and I always struggled to stick with You Fail Me for any dedicated amount of time - until the Redux was released in 2016, which then made it a much easier listen. It’s now become potentially one of my favourite releases from them.

This album was a massive moment for Converge – not only were they under pressure to follow up from the brilliance of Jane Doe, but they’d also signed with the semi-major label Epitaph Records. Kurt was also having to write an album for the first time in the knowledge that they’d only have one guitarist to perform parts live. Secondary guitarist Aaron Dalbec left the band just after the release of Jane Doe; his final show with the band being the album’s release show. He was largely absent from the production of Jane Doe, and the band contemplate replacing him, but successful shows as a four-piece convince the band they don't need to.

So Converge respond to all this pressure by delivering a stellar album with more developed variety, cleaner songwriting and a more polished sound overall, with the album itself addressing failure (woah, you’d never have guessed with that title right?).

Jacob Bannon focuses on this subject initially due to the lack of closure he feels from the Jane Doe-era, but soon expands to a wider scope: *“I started thinking about failure,

Let's Talk: An Artist's Creative Prime

This topic has been brushed on before but it's a topic that's been on my mind lately and I'd like to address it directly.

I'll start with some outside context to help frame the perspective.

In the world of sports there's the common concept of Athletic Prime. An athlete's prime is basically the perfect moment in which physical fitness, health and skill all intersect. Different sports have a different window of opportunity. In tennis one issue to athletes is that you'll never have reaction times better than your teens to early 20s. Therefore the elite in tennis is divided from the mundane based on whether or not their skills can carry them out of the moment when they were at their peak physical ability. From there skill and health ends up being what can keep a tennis player in their prime.

In the world of fighting there's a fairly well regarded truism that any fighter basically has a 7 year athletic prime. Anything else is considered an exception and in fighting the prime can start at any time. Whenever their prime ends you see skill define their success. The window of opportunity for a fighter can change based on how hard they train, the type of damage they allow themselves to take in a fight, how much they study the techniques and strategy personally over relying on their coaches. In boxing an easy example is George Foreman, as a young man he was physically imposing. He hit like a truck, he was agile and moved well and he was surprisingly clever, though he had a temper and when he got angry he started swinging to take your head off. A frightening prospect in itself. Has an old man in the sport, well past his athletic peak he re-entered the sport and used his sincere love of the strategy to outsmart his younger and faster competition. He changed his entire methodology to carry him through his new phase of life. Floyd Mayweather and Ali both did as well.

BACK TO MUSIC

I think an artists creative prime is similar but a little complicated. First I think the easiest thing to get out of the way is that their skills are critical. Now some technically poor technicians are actually still surprisingly good writers and I would consider writing a skill to carry you through.

I feel like most aritists have a limit on the amount of sincere emotional content they have to draw from. There's only so much fluent empathy they can put into their music. There's only so much raw emotion they can draw from. Some people live a crapsack life an

Review/discussion about: Girlfriend BETA

[MAL link to Girlfriend BETA](http://myanimelist.net/anime/24855/Girlfriend_(Kari))

Prologue: Just a dude looking to get better at reviewing/analyzing anime. I hope you enjoy the review and the discussion that follows! Critiques are welcome.

There's a certain allure to a simple life. Going about one's everyday things without a care in the world, merely strolling along at a leisurely pace, not having to worry about the tragedies that exist. Waking up, enjoying what occurs, going to sleep, and repeat. It's a cycle that only contains the more trivial issues in retrospect. While normal people are unable to obtain such ease, the girls of Girlfriend BETA have. And their lives are no more difficult than a literal walk in the park.

STORY

Girlfriend BETA stars nearly forty (yes, 40) different girls who attend a local high school. Many are given the spotlight, some are merely looked at, but they all have one thing in common: their lives are steady.

As a slice-of-life show, BETA fits the genre perfectly. Almost too perfectly. The anime does nothing more than follow one or two groups of girls in an episodic manner, showing the audience a small issue that needs to be dealt with. Kokomi worrying about her weight, the student council running the cafeteria, and the music club trying to create a new song are as passive of problems as they come. The show isn't attempting to elicit massive drama, it isn't looking to be extremely funny, nor is it evoking strong emotional responses. It's nothing more than teenage girls hanging out, having fun, and smiling along the way.

One of BETA's presumed strong points is actually a weakness: the size of the cast. At approximately forty unique girls, there almost literally is "someone for everyone." And while that is fine to an extent, other, smaller concerns arise. With such a large number of people, it becomes nearly impossible to properly keep track of: who is in what class, which friends know one another, who is older, the names, who does what, etc. So, when the anime shifts from being about the occult club to the literature club, a dissonance due to the sudden transition from one group to the next is created. This causes the anime to be "difficult" to follow. Switching up the perspective in a show is fine, but the way in which BETA handles it -- assuming the viewer understands and associates with everyone exactly -- only hurts itself by becoming more confusing and subsequently uninteresting to watch. This is merely becaus

[TOMT][Song]What weird-ass song does this weird-ass song remind me of?

So, the theme song of Rock Paper Scissors Champion https://youtu.be/pZyrpPtR4-s reminds me of an even trippier song. Here's what I remember:

  • It has similar multi-voice vocals, but it's even more monotone.
  • I can't remember what they lyrics were, but they were just as disjointed (if not more so). I think it was just lots and lots of exposition - again like the RPCC theme. There were no rhymes.
  • It's faster, with the tempo similar to this song. The rhythm of the singing is similar to Jane's Brain too - it has the same 'cramming-too-many-words-into-one-line' style. EDIT #2: If I remember correctly, there would be little breaks at the end of each verse and a guitar fill would come in to finish off the verse.
  • I can't remember what the context was. I think it must have been connected to some videogame or some Youtube video or something. EDIT: I seem to remember the song being accompanied by shitty animation, although that animation might have been part of a videogame.

EDIT #3: Now that I think about it, I think the song was all about the main character's epic quest, but the main character had a really plain, normal name like Bob or Phil. I might be wrong on that one though.

EDIT #4: More and more stuff is coming back to me. I'm pretty sure the lyrics (or at least a portion of them) were instructions on how to play the game (or at least the aim/goal of the game).

r/books, let's create a list of books which can help us deal with real life issues! What do you turn to when you need literature to comfort you?

So I'm going through an emotional time right now and the first thing that I turned to was a book. It made me think, why don't we create a book list to help us when we need them most? What book has helped you out in a really difficult time and would you suggest it to others? When you need advice on how to feel humility, what do you turn to? When you are feeling depressed from love, what do you crave when you read?

With the list, I'm more than happy to edit in suggestions if they are popular and to change my ideas if shown the way through discussion, that they were misguided! :)

So, I'll get the list started:

  • Redemption: Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. A lot of people are probably thinking right now, why not Crime and Punishment? The reason is that I really do not believe it to be a story of redemption. I don't believe that Raskolnikov attained redemption at the end of the book, more so that he saw the moral righteousness in accepting punishment. Redemption is more than that, it's an understanding and a true penance for what has been done. I believe that Jean Valjean attains this, although it fades and strengthens as the book progresses. Truly, the example of him stealing the money from the little boy and for years, searching for him, is the best example of this. His ability to still offer charity in his older age, despite being poverty stricken himself is also a sign that he truly feels guilt and a need to right those wrongs he has committed.

  • Vanity/Selfishness: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Vanity Fair by William Thackeray & The Portrait of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Reading The Great Gatsby is like emerging from an enchantment. The book lures us in with its lyrical prose describing parties, women and luxury, before wrenching us into reality with the ugliness of the characters and their selfishness. It casts us into its web by offering us the enigmatic portrait of Gatsby, tickling our senses so that we are curious, before condemning the lifestyle and showing a side to beauty that is ugly. To be quite honest, I couldn't finish Vanity Fair. The main character repulsed me, so with this one, I'll have to rely on you guys to tell me whether it is a good or bad choice. And Dorian Gray, of course, is the epitome of this lesson. Of why we should accept age and not conceal our natures until it destroys us. Of why a life without consideration for negative effects never allows us to mature or age.

  • Love: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Bridge

I was doing ok until I heard our favorite Christmas song on the radio

It just hit me like a ton of bricks. One minute, I'm driving on the interstate and listening to the radio, the next minute I'm in tears. It doesn't help that our favorite song is loaded with lyrics like "Merry Christmas Darling. We're apart that's true, but I can dream and in my dreams I'm Christmasing with you"

No, it couldn't be some giddy, stupid song like Jingle Bell Rock or some Frosty the Dumbshit Snowman. It HAD to that song that we loved so much. The song we sang karaoke together. The song we both teared up at, even before all the hurt and the pain. My eyes were blurry with tears, I almost had to pull over.

I was doing ok before that. I was angry, but I distracted myself and put the anger in the back of my mind, but always remembering it so I wouldn't feel sad about you. I thought I had a good system going here. I guess not, cause that night I unblocked you from IG and looked at your posts for a while. What a mistake that was. Pretty latina girls complimenting you left and right. You even have pictures with one particular woman who you seem to be smitten with. I looked at her profile. She's a doctor. You really have upgraded from me, especially in such a short time. It all makes sense now. Why did you bother with plain ole white bread fat Jane when you could have some smart doctor that looks like Penelope Cruz? Why did you even get with me? Why?

You always had some snarky joke about how I was "too white" for you. I don't know why you got with me if you don't like what race I am. I can't change that. You'd also make subtle jabs about other people's weight, fully knowing that I struggle with mine. Red flag. You only ever complimented me through text, and it was so rare I can count on my right hand the amount of compliments I got from you. Another red flag.

Love makes people so stupid. I hate that. I hate the way you'd turn me to mush just by seeing your stupid name pop up on my phone. Your inconsistency with the attention I'd get from you drove me mad. I already have anxiety, but it was like anxiety x100000 with you. Sometimes you couldn't wait to see me, other times, you didn't even bother. I think the longest you didn't bother talking with me was 3 weeks. i gave you the benefit of the doubt but deep down I knew something wasn't right about you. If a man is crazy about a woman, he'll go to any lengths to talk to her. But I kept telling myself that you were busy or tired or working.

I knew it was over when you ignored me on that trip we plan

What is your favorite song lyric that has no explanation?

It can be from any genre.

Please only with lyrics that have no explanations where even genius.com is unhelpful.

Like A$AP Ferg Plain Jane "I fuck your bitch for the irony!" There's no annotation or explanation for that.

Incorporating both singing and rapping, Nicki appears at her most vulnerable. This song is a definite highlight from the album and the perfect opener into what follows.

*Majesty (feat. Eminem & Labrinth)
