Today I saw an obviously sick pine siskin at my feeder. It had goopy eyes and was lethargic and let me approach it. I've noticed other lethargic siskins the last few days too. Just as I feared, a bad outbreak of salmonellosis is spreading in the Puget Sound region. It is extremely deadly and will wipe out countless birds. Anyone who has feeders should take them down until at least February. If you have a hummingbird feeder you should either take it down or clean and disinfect it daily.
Taking down the feeders will cause the birds to stop congregating and disperse. Yes, some birds will not make it through winter if their food source is taken away, but the lethality of letting the outbreak go unchecked will be much higher.
Please share this info with anyone you know in the Puget Sound region who feeds birds.
