I started bawling my eyes out in pigeon pose in gentle yoga after my HIIT workout

I’m 5’1 and morbidly obese for my height. Too embarrassed to say my weight. I’ve been getting back into working out and moving more during the day. I take my husky to the park twice a day and walk her a couple times for 30+ minutes after the park.

I’ve been getting back into an active lifestyle since this month and I’m embarrassed that I’ve let myself go so hard in the past year. The exercises and poses I was able to do easily or with no strain are painful or just rigid due to me not exercising. Today I did a total body HIIT workout and did some gentle yoga to recover.

I was already struggling with some poses and trying to do modified versions due to my fatness, but when it came to pigeon pose, I was sobbing. I was sobbing that I’m so fat and beating myself up, but while I was crying, I begrudgingly finished the yoga session.

I now feel better about myself because even though I wanted to give up on the session, I finished it.

Pigeon pose

Would anybody be able to share some tips on how to perfect the pigeon pose? I really struggle with getting my knee parallel to my mat, keep my foot up to meet my elbow and my my hip down. I find this one of the most difficult poses to get into correctly and not sure what I am doing wrong so any tips would be appreciated.

Pigeon 🐦 Pose

I've seen various instructions on pigeon and was wondering what you all thought..

Where should you be putting your weight? I've been trying to keep weight distribution even (between the "in" leg and the "out" leg) and not lean into one particular side. This gives a deeper stretch in the inner thigh of the "out" leg

It's a pose I enjoy but I do wonder whether I'm doing it right, particularly as I have naturally open hips and find it easy to fold forward in pigeon.

Pigeon Pose Difficulty.

I seem to have some issues “letting go” in Pigeon pose. I don’t have this issue with any other pose that I have tryed (I’m still relatively new to yoga) but pigeon seems to be so sticky to me. It doesn’t matter what leg is in front of me I can’t seem to sit and just breathe into it. If that makes any sense. It’s almost like I’m to stiff in my hips to even relax beyond the discomfort. It’s definitely not a bad pain, just intense.

I’m wondering if maybe I am alone in this difficulty, people around me seems to be having no issue with it in the slightest. But if someone is like me out there is/was there anything that helped you in particular?

Panic Attacks during Pigeon Pose?

Hi Yogies! I’ve been doing yoga for about 12 or 13 years. I have a loose relationship with it, probably practice 3-9 times a month. I’m not naturally flexible but it helps keep me more flexible and energetic than I would be otherwise and helps with my chronic back pain. I have a lot of physical and mental trauma. Any way this year I have noticed a strange trend, which is that I get panic attacks during pigeon pose and have to stop the practice abruptly. Get up and drink some water and it calms down. Any one else experience this or have insights? Am I doing something wrong?

Pigeon pose question

How is the front leg supposed to be ? I’ve heard conflicting things like the leg is supposed to parallel to the mat but then I read that it’s hard on your knees and trying that myself it feels unnatural and hurts but then I’ve read your leg is supposed to be pointed downward more and I’ve tried that and it feels much better. I was just wondering which way you’re supposed to do it. Thanks !

What specific muscles are being stretched with the front leg in pigeon pose?

I know with the back leg you are stretching the hip flexors, but I can’t figure out what muscles In the hip I’m feeling the stretch when I’m positioning the shin of my front leg parallel to the top edge of the mat. Thanks in advance.

Is pigeon pose good for APT?

I’m really confused about the pigeon pose. On the back leg you’re stretching the hip flexors which is tight when you have APT. However, on the front leg it seems you’re internally rotating the tight hence stretching the external rotators which sound counterproductive for fixing APT. Does anyone have insights?

Pinching in right hip while in child’s pose or pigeon pose.

Hi, recently I’ve been training my splits pretty hard and I’m so so close but in the last two days, I realize I have a pinching sensation in my right hip, right where it bends, when I’m in pigeon pose, child’s pose, at the bottom of a squat. I’m assuming I should rest it and not stretch as hard, although I haven’t yet, but does anyone know more about what’s wrong with my hip? Will it fix itself in a few days or am I stuck with a bad hip now? Is the hip flexor over stretched? Is it weak? Anything!

Crying in Pigeon Pose...

The title says it all, really. Pigeon Pose was in my practice last night and I suddenly found myself inexplicably tearing up during it, lmao. I’ve done some follow-up reading online and apparently crying is quite a common response with hip openers? There’s this theory that we store a lot of emotions in our hips, so working them can open the floodgates.

This isn’t scientifically proven, obviously, but it’s interesting. Another reason might be simply that it’s a quiet and introspective move, allowing for more mindfulness and ergo some tears.

Still, this response really surprised me — I wasn’t thinking about anything but my breathing and how my hip was a bit tight (no pain) and bam, suddenly I’m welling up.

This happen to anyone else? 😅

When doing pigeon pose I know we supposed to keep the leg brought under at 90 degrees, but I like folding it around degrees because it is easy to allow my stomach area to fully touch my legs. I see some youtubers do this. Nothing wrong right?

Also, do both hips have to touch the floor? I noticed the bent one my glutes are lifted. I mean when I go 90 degrees I feel discomfort as well. I like to meditate on pigeon pose and feel awesome with no pain so im just going to go ahead and do what the lady says and bend the legs. Thats okay right?

Questions on pigeon pose

I'm starting to like pigeon pose but I don't think I quite get it.

The foot from the leg bended in the front gets directly under my crotch. I tried to push it slightly further away, but it hurts my knee the following days. All videos I see show the front leg almost parallel with the front of the mat.

Is having the foot under my crotch going to prevent me from properly doing this pose or the next next marmaid pose?

Am I supposed to slowly get my foot further and further away? (Not being successful here so far).

And when I'm in the pose, are my hips and thighs supposed to be passive (just gravity stretch) or active to build up strength in that position?
