I only ever hear the answer "Counties were controlled by earls/counts and duchies were controlled by dukes." But why are they given different names? I get that nowadays most nobles don't have any direct control of the areas their titles imply and that there is a hierarchy of prestige to the titles, but before the modern age, why were some lords earls, some dukes, etc.?
Here's what I understand so far. Counties were the first to exist being the constituent regions of the Kingdom of England. The monarch couldn't directly administer the whole kingdom by themselves so they granted chunks of land (counties) to an earl for them to run. People in a county answered directly to the earl and the earls answered directly to the monarch. That's easy; it's like any business hierarchy.
But when the other titles of baron, viscount, marquess, and duke came around, why were some lords made barons but not earls, or marquess but duke? I know it's not just hierarchical. Duchies aren't made of marches which are made up of counties. So why was a piece of land considered a duchy and not a county? Was it just a matter of prestige? Like was the Duke of York created because the monarch wanted to give the prince a county to rule but since he was the prince it had to be more prestigious than other counties so it was made a duchy?
If the answer is only about prestige then I'll take it, but I just want to know if there were any geographical or political reasons a piece of land was given one name over another. One reason I do know is that marches were specifically counties on the borders of other countries. But are there other reasons? Was a county made a duchy because it had a popular city or a university that gave it prestige?
Lately I've been playing on a new character for the scoreboard's level up challenges, but I haven't bothered putting a lot of effort into this character's camp until today. I had a decent small house near the Overseer, but I wanted something more permanent, and for that I had to find a perfect plot of land. I like building reclaimed prewar houses, so I wanted something flat, next to a road, and the Savage Divide is my favorite region so I wanted something there. I spent a long time searching, until finally stumbling across this spot directly between Emmett Mountain and the Investigator's Cabin. Since I know spots with good flat land are few and far between, I figured I'd share it here for anyone else searching.
A few notes:
I know it's counter-intuitive to find a perfect CAMP location and then share it with others, but I don't really spend a ton of time on this character and, like I said, I know how hard it is to find locations like this. I don't know if it'll actually be helpful to anyone, but I can't remember ever seeing a camp here before. Now I just have to build a house to go with the garage; I spent two or three hours building that thing because the bushes were being so fucking picky about where my foundations were.
Greetings, all. My partner and I just purchased our first home in southern Indiana (hardiness zone 6a - for what that is worth) on 5 acres of forest. I am interested in creating a sustainable and productive homestead by working with nature.
My big question is: how do I begin? Are there must-read books for beginners? Websites I should check out? Guides for people in the midwest?
I'd like to establish a small garden around my home which is the only space without forest canopy over it. I'm also interested in working within the forest as much as possible (fruit trees, bushes, herbs, vegetables, mushrooms). There are some spaces that will have some direct sunlight part of the day through the canopy but most of it will be shaded by trees.
Thank you so much for helping me enter this world of sustainable living and permaculture. With love - Al
Hello,
one day I logged in on our Minecraft server and this dude made an ''extension'' of the hill our castle is built on. He never Built anything on the new land tho, so I am not sure whether to destroy it or just terraform it. As you can see, he built it over the river and made dirt stairs there which I already destroyed because it looked extremely terrible. I want to make it more natural and make it like a cliff but to do so I have to change the river flow. I never did any terraforming before, so I am asking how should I do it? I watched some videos about it but I need help with this particular river. Thanks in advance for your tips

Hi All,

Just running out of space to put all the structures acquired in the game - for a quite long time I did not open any new lands - I have those two remaining - please advise what are the requirements for those two to open.
My mother is listed as having istismar in a piece of land alongside my father (listed seperately). Me and my sister are the actual owners (Ω ΩΩ Ψ±ΩΨ¨Ψ©), owning all of the shares in the property (Ψ§Ψ³ΩΩ ).
My parents might get divorced because my father is a cheater, and he's probably going to leave her with nothing...
My question is whether my mother will retain her istismar after the divorce? I am asking this because the documentation of the land lists both of them but has the words 'and his wife'. So would a divorce mean that she is no longer entitled to that land.
Someone please help or ask someone who understands these things. I don't live in Lebanon and the consulates and the embassy near me are all useless and unhelpful.
I have the opportunity to purchase a small piece of river front land from an older retired friend of mine. However, logistically its a little complex.
The 1/4 section has been subdivided once already (years ago) where my friend sold 50 acres to a fellow that now lives there. So my friend still owns 110 acres. 107 of them are on his side of the river, which cuts through the 1/4 section, leaving a 3 acre pie shaped piece across the river. This 3 acre piece is what Iβd like to buy. However, the river is the county border so the 3 acre piece is in a different county from his home 1/4.
Also, the only road access to the 3 acre piece is a private oilfield lease road that comes within about 800 meters of the 3 acres and dead ends at a pump jack.
So my question is, how do I go about buying something like this? Iβm assuming the land will need to be surveyed. And subdivided from the current land owner? And how does one negotiate road access? Ideally Iβd like to have a dirt road access bordering the farmers field along the tree line as to not disturb his grain crop. Is it standard procedure to have a formal contract drawn up between myself and the farmer who owns the neighbouring quarter granting me road access for a one time fee of some sort? Like say I pay him $5K to be able to have irrefutable access to my 3 acre piece?
Hereβs a link of my talented drawings depicting the land situation and road access
Any advice or knowledge is appreciated.
Thanks
I love to get a debate going on this question.
Capitalists obviously believe in private property. I purchased this piece of land from the government or from someone else and so therefore it is mine.
Socialists from what Iβve seen believes that a piece of land belongs to everyone. Natural resources does not belong to any single individual.
So the question is why do you believe in either one of these?
