Generic feel-good phrases such as "you matter" "you are loved" "you're beautiful" etc. are insulting and emotionally manipulative, and they make me feel much worse afterwards.

Seriously, there seems to be a trend among some parts of the internet and real life to just flash faux motivational feel-good phrases like these to get cheap emotional responses from people who are truly desperate enough to believe that somewhere on the internet or in their vague proximity there is a person who actually genuinely cares about them. Sorry to break it to you, but they probably can't. How can you care about someone you don't even know personally? They have no idea who you are and you have no idea who they are. You are therefore completely blind to any reasons why you are truly loved by anyone, which makes perceiving this feeling as genuine extremely difficult, and impossible for me.

The sort of people who would actually unironically find these phrases motivational are so devoid of any positive social interaction (which I am not saying NEVER happens but is such a desperate situation) that any string of words vaguely resembling a heartfelt compliment brightens their day. The trouble is that these phrases masquerade as heartfelt compliments but are such cheap emotional signalling that anyone utilising a sliver of their human observation and reasoning can see that they are being emotionally manipulated.

The other day at school, I saw a message scribbled on my desk that said "Whoever sits at this seat, know that you are loved #SpreadPositivity". The vagueness in the wording baffled me. If someone sits at this seat, by virtue of just being there, they are loved, and I, sitting in another spot, am no longer told that I'm loved? If I am truly loved by anyone in particular, then the message would have been a lot more personal, and due to the circumstances in which that message is being presented, it could not be. That message would have had some positive effect on me if that were the seat I was assigned to (which would make the message take on a new meaning, hence why here it was used so generically), but no, it was a classroom shared by 4 grades above and below mine and due to COVID we have free seating. The message is not personal; I don't think the writer even knows who I am, and even if they did, it was not targeted at me, so I cannot personally feel good about anything in the message. If anything, seeing that message made me upset, knowing that my feelings have been pandered to in an attempt to have a cheap emotional response elicited from me. I felt manipulated. It was insulting, too; I do not need anyone to remind me that I am loved, especiall

Are there any words or phrases from another language that you were taught in school, but discovered no one really says them in the language?

For example I remember being taught "comme ci comme รงa" in french class, but I've been told no-one really says that.

Or for example in English, I think the only time I have heard "how do you do" or "whom" was from non-native speakers. At least where I live, no-one says those. Well, whom has hung around in set phrases like "to whom it may concern", but even then you would write it, not say it.

'Here comes trouble', 'Who let you in?', 'Get that down you, son', are all commonly heard phases of a particular British stereotype. What other phrases might they say? (And what would you call that stereotype?)

To elaborate, you might have found yourself in a pub near a table of rowdy men. A friend of theirs walks through the door, possibly a bit late to their gathering. As the late attendee walks in, one of the group points out the new arrival to the rest of the group and says 'here comes trouble'. As the new arrival approaches the group someone says to that person 'Who let you in?'. At a later point when someone is handed a pint the words 'get that down you, son', will be said.

What other common phrases might you hear from this group?

Edit - ignore the question about the name of the stereotype, I'm more interested in the other possible phrases.

Wizards: Please add 'Sorry', 'Lag', 'disconnect' and 'glitch' to the existing phrases.

C'mon... it's unfair on people who think people are deliberately spinning the clock.

Edit 1: yes, you're all correct it would get abused and should be a connection symbol of some sort. Which came from The_Frostweaver first.

Edit 2: Pdabaker adds "oh so it works like that" would be probably better added too.

Edit 3: Forlornknight's flag idea in comments works too.

Edit 4: No one said it, but judging the room, really it would be more important to bring back STUFFY DOLL.

Edit 5: Vladislove3k is right "No add " two headed giant mode" first. And then "historical commander". Yeah not brawl i want to play real commander with 100 cards!"

Edit 6: Ymrilix is right - a "GTG" one would be good. Don't want people thinking they won on purpose.

Edit 7: Chakolatechip is also right Add "Manascrewed" and "flooded"

Edit 8: Little off topic but Polusmaximus wants "what i want to know is there a way to increase font size during a game?

Sometimes it's impossible to read a wall of text before timer runs out."

Edit 9: MrBabbs is right, "Good lord I'm dumb"

for when you drop the land before playing the land drop trigger you were waiting to play and all other DERP moments

Edit 10: Oh Dieth's is the best so far ADD this

"Would you like to be friends? With an option for the other side to accept.

Would you like a rematch? again same as above."

Edit 11: Tommy_Polia has refined it again even better, ,"This would be really good, knowing if your opponent is actually in the match would be great. It could be as simple as having their name color green if "connected" and red if not."

Edit 12: Snoweel also with "I'd like a "reveal your hand" option at the end. As in, look how terrible my draw was!"

Edit 13: No one said it but a sad trombone sound for Ulamog drops.

Edit 14: Starfyredragon also adds " I want, "GIVE OTHER PLAYER ADDITIONAL TIMER"

Sometimes, they're doing something cool, and I want to see it play out!

Also, more quests. So many people gear their decks towards the quests, which means 90% of decks I face are about spamming some quest requirement. SRSLY, if this mechanic has to stick around, please increase the number of quests. By like, a lot. Each time someone gets a quest, I want it to encourage them to build a new deck to meet it.

Things like, "Play all five colors in one match" or "counter your own spell" or "sacrifice 12 creatures", or "Activate planeswalker abilities 5 times.", or "prevent 30 damage.", or "Attack with 3 flying creatures.", o

"Frontend development isn't real programming" is such a popular phrase in the cs industry, it makes me stressed.

I've always been interested in frontend, but I've seen so many people say that it isnt "real programming"

If theres anything I hate, its being looked down upon, or being treated like I dont deserve my job/position, or that I'm somehow "not a real programmer". The fact that I'm a woman makes this worse, because then it just feels like I'm the stupid girl who got lucky and earns alot of money, but isnt even a "real programmer".

I've been looking to learn backend just to have more job oppurtities, but now I dont even know if thats the real reason. Sometimes, I think I just want to learn backend to prove that Im actually a programmer, not "just a frontend dev".

Does anyone else feel this way?

Edit: thanks for the comments everyone, made me feel much better about my profession :)

In Dawn of Fire: Gate of Bones when Torvann Lokk ascends to daemonhood he hears, "Iron within, iron without" presumably hearing his gene-father, Peter Turbo. It's cool, creepy, and a great moment IMO.

Why are republicans so obsessed with this phrase โ€œpeople need to get back to workโ€?

First of all, I think everybody understands people need to get back to work. Everybody knows the economy needs to stabilize itself.

But do they not realize that we are barely breaking out of a pandemic created recession? Only about 3 months ago we were having like 3000-3500 people dying each day (almost the same like India/Brazil now).

Plus, I think the left is making a decent argument about wages. If wages are so low that earning unemployment seems more lucrative, businesses should be reconsidering their hourly rates.

Itโ€™s starting to get annoying as to how republicans donโ€™t see this, and I keep seeing these comments on facebook and youtube...is this just bot activity or do these people not understand the reasons why?

Apes. RC and friends want us to get knee deep in info before the meeting. Hereโ€™s the statement:

BEFORE MAKING ANY VOTING DECISION, THE COMPANYโ€™S SHAREHOLDERS ARE URGED TO READ THE PROXY STATEMENT(S) IN THEIR ENTIRETY WHEN THEY BECOME AVAILABLE AND ANY OTHER DOCUMENTS TO BE FILED WITH THE SEC IN CONNECTION WITH THE COMPANYโ€™S 2021 ANNUAL MEETING OR INCORPORATED BY REFERENCE IN THE PROXY STATEMENTS BECAUSE THEY WILL CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMPANYโ€™S 2021 ANNUAL MEETING AND THE PARTIES RELATED THERETO.

Often when introducing ne wplauer to the game i have to explain to them how this world does not work on videogame rules, i think the phrase "this isn't skyrim" or "this isn't a videogame" are the ones i use most commonly during these sessions, a few comedic examples:

(From a game where only one player was available so his character had a small personal adventure): "Can i go into the jungle to grind xp?"

"Can i upgrade my sword?"

"why is the quest giver not on the street corner where we first met him anymore?"

And another plethora of murder hobo behavior, usually these are pretty funny and we always manage to clear up any misconceptions eventually

A thought on the phrase โ€œpre-everythingโ€.

I know when people say โ€œpre-everythingโ€ it typically means, โ€œI havenโ€™t started HRT or social transitionโ€ and perhaps few other things. But itโ€™s always struck me as strange.

Because even if you havenโ€™t started HRT, even if nobody in the world knows youโ€™re trans, by admitting to yourself that youโ€™re interested in transition, youโ€™ve taken a monumental step.

Youโ€™ve decided to stop lying to yourself.

Youโ€™ve decided to stop living in fear.

Youโ€™ve decided to honor your existence.

And that means, on transitionโ€™s long and winding path, youโ€™ve already covered a lot of ground. There may be additional milestones farther down the path, but doesnโ€™t negate the work youโ€™ve done to get here, where you are right now.

What an exciting time to be you.

This shit pisses me off so much! Well guess what, THAT'S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT!!! If you took better care of yourself, you and your partner wouldn't be in that situation. It's not their fault for losing attraction to you. "His hands were moving faster than I could see" is a phrase that utterly crushed me,

Season 3 episode 16: The Offspring.

I just watched it now completely randomly for the first time in many years. This is an incredible piece of Star Trek for a lot of reasons. It has an absurdly progressive theme for a television episode produced in 1990 (A single man decides to become a father, allows her to choose her own gender and identity and must fight the state for his right to raise his child). It has some of the most incredible Data quotes of the show, where he just keeps. being. right with every goshdang sentence he utters.

But the fact that this seemingly emotioneless android was fighting more than he ever did on screen to save the life of his child to no avail has just completely collapsed me emotionally.

I never cry over this kind of stuff but this has clearly triggered something in me because I'm a god damn waterfall right now.

Anyone else find dry humping scenes more memorable than actual sex scenes? Ugh, "dry humping" is such an unsexy turn of phrase. What do you call it, grinding? I digress...

There's something about the H coming in his pants like a teenager that makes me vigorously fan myself. I just finished {Her Forbidden Hero by Laura Kay} and the H/h have a mutually satisfying "grind sesh" in a lake that was chef's kiss. Equally memorable IMO are the scenes where H gets h off by putting a thigh between her legs. I think it must be that "I have to have a piece of you right this second or I'll die" energy. Really any scene with the kind of urgency that makes an adult man forget about the potential embarrassment that comes with an oddly placed crotch stain is alright in my book. Maybe they're extra steamy because they add to the sexual tension as opposed to breaking it. Thoughts? Please feel free to drop some good recs that have scenes like this!

Books I've read w/ "grind sesh":

  • {Her Forbidden Hero by Laura Kaye} CR M/F

  • {The Legend of Lyon Redmond by Julie Anne Long} HR M/F

Honorable Mention:

  • {Worth It by S.M. Shade} CR M/F (Not grinding, but H does come in pants in a remarkably funny scene involving vibrating underwear)

There are so many more I'm forgetting. Help!

Has there ever been an action movie in the history of the galaxy that did not include the phrase "We got company!"?

Our heros are holed up in some warehouse or safe house or farm house or what have you.

They are plotting their next move when...suddenly...vehicles approach in the distance! oh shit!

One character slyly moves the curtains away just an inch, views the approaching vehincles, turns to the other heros and says

"We got company!"

Its in EVERY FUCKING ACTION movie ever created under the sun. I swear.

Why there are so many โ€œwokeโ€ people on the left obsessed with using alienating phrases with contradictory โ€œhidden meaningsโ€ that are ultimately counter-productive to their intended goals?

Iโ€™m talking about shit like โ€œACABโ€, โ€œKill All Menโ€, โ€œDefund The Policeโ€, โ€œToxic Masculinityโ€. Phrases that seem to lack nuance on the surface but when pressed about the meaning its always some convoluted message that may actually be valid critiques but are only tangentially related to the phrase (or in direct opposition- a lot of people who say โ€œDefund the Policeโ€ want to increase itโ€™s funding). I wonโ€™t say the same for โ€œBlack Lives Matterโ€ since that one is different and more straightforward/justified, but even then one can make the argument using a phrase like โ€œOur Lives Matterโ€ would be much more personal to non-black people and prevent righties from using dumbass shit like โ€œAll Lives Matterโ€ to demonize the movement.

Anyways do some of these woketards really think Joe Bumfuck from Middle America is gonna turn on the TV, hear some of those phrases, and think โ€œHm, while on the surface such words may be an attack on my character, the deeper meaning represents a critique on the inherently unequal nature of our society that if reformed, would benefit us allโ€? Obviously he fucking wonโ€™t, its more along the lines of โ€œDem devil libtards tryna cut muh dick off, take muh guns, and get rid all da police!โ€ And whether you agree with all of Joe Bumfuckโ€™s views or not, youโ€™re gonna need the support of people like him to make any sort of meaningful change in this country.

Iโ€™m almost certain this linguistics issue is part of why literal fucking Neo-Nazis are getting elected to Congress while anyone more to the left then a SocDem (and even many of them) are relegated to being the caricature of a screeching dyed-haired SJW feminist. Notice how differently the right uses political phrasing- โ€œMake America Great Againโ€, โ€œLock Her Upโ€, โ€œBuild That Wallโ€. No hidden meanings you need a BS in Gender Studies to understand, no contradictory proposals behind them, no attacks lacking nuance on a wide group of people that illicit visceral emotional responses from people in said group. Itโ€™s all designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, something many leftists desperately need to learn if they ever hope to spread their ideology beyond their college campus. Yes the right uses dogwhistles with hidden meanings a lot but theyโ€™re designed to be subtle and enigmatic, so not only does it not risk alienating more moderate individuals, but it can also be turned against people who try to call them out for it via gaslighting.

Does anyone else feel like the phrase "Children are a Blessing" is a form of gaslighting?

I'm sure I'm not alone in having this phrase thrown in my face...it just feels so invalidating.
