Retails pharmacists and pharmacy techs.. lets strike.. 09/07/20 Labor Day

What are we waiting for, every post I see in any pharmacy group people are complaining, hours cut, benefit cut, salary down, no bonus, we all suffer from anxiety. At least half of us suffering from cardiovascular conditions due to toxic work environment. They are killing us slow death, let’s unit together and strike, Labor Day will be the best chance, so we have time to gather as many pharmacists and pharmacy worker, if you are too scared to do it, it will be too scary not to take an action now, before they cut more hours and close store early and get rid of most of us, and then it gonna be too late. We need to unit together and stand against corporate greed, we had enough.

Note: I see a lot a comments suggesting unionize, great idea, can someone lead us how to start!!

My Pharmacist won't refill my prescription any more because its too expensive.

This is in NC.

I went to pick up my prescription refill today and my pharmacist said that after this refill, they will no longer refill my prescription, even though I have multiple refills left on my script.

They told me that "your insurance sucks", and they're losing too much money on my prescription (a zero cost to me BC) and won't refill for me specifically any longer. They said they carry the same medication for other customers and will continue to do so. Given that this doesn't hit the 'conscious clause' birth control refusal normally does, is this a legal refusal?

Do you guys think our customers (particularly the okder ones, particularly the women) are more likely to scapegoat younger pharmacists?

So I’m a young pharmacist. Been working for 2.5 years now and I’ve always had this feeling that I’m being percieved differently by the older (particularly female) customers (not like it matters, really). I’ve been super reluctant to cry prejudice, but recently something happened that made me think it might actually be the case.

Long story short, one lady (well call her gertrude) complained to corporate about me for very ambigious things. Her complaint was centered around how every time she comes into the pharmacy and sees me she always thinks β€œwhat an idiot.” I literally had no idea who this person was and I don’t remember ever talking to her in my life, but whatever. She had a bad experience and its ultimately my fault.

Fast forward a few months to present day and another lady (karen) literally lost a prescription from back in feb. She blamed the pharmacy and me specifically because I was the one who checked it. When we showed her the signature that clearly said Karen, she said she

we have a customer who regularly comes in to pick up meds (once every week typically) and he tends to rant about the government and his doctors and whoever else being incompetent. today he came in and joked that he was going to kill our pharmacist, but he had decided to let her live a little longer.

after he left i asked my pharmacist why she tolerates that, and she said "yeah it makes me uncomfortable but i know he is just joking, that's just how he is." i pointed out that if he had spoken to a tech like that she wouldn't have liked it and would have been concerned.

for some reason he came in like an hour later solely to have me ring him up for a drink and he said he was going to wait to talk to our pharmacist. she finally has a moment to step over to speak with him and he says "actually i'm not going to kill you, i'm going to kill my doctor." and then goes on a rant about how he is smarter than his stupid doctor.

I didn’t know where else to post this, I also doubt Joe will ever see this but he was awesome today! Thank you Joe! He absolutely went above and beyond.

I called the pharmacy to speak with the pharmacist as per my doctors request ( had a tela health visit with the doc) to make sure the new medication he was going to prescribe wasn’t going to interfere with the already existing medications. Joe was the one to take the call, I explained why I was calling and after a quick check he gave the okay to the new med. We cracked a few jokes about the doc doing his tela health calls pool side and said our good byes. I thought that would be it. Nope!

Joe called me back, and I had missed the call. He left a message asking me to call him or letting me know he would speak to me when I came to get the med. I called Joe back, he wanted to let me know he double checked that there were no interactions. We got to chatting about why the med was being used and he even said to me if he could think of any

WIBTA for leaving a bad review for a pharmacist who gave my 18 month old daughter the wrong dosage of medication?

So backstory goes my 18 month old suffers from severe reflex and has since she was born. She has been on meds since 4 months. At first we had the meds compounded (made as a liquid so its easier to give to a baby). There are only a few compounding chemists near us, so we always went to the same one. They would keep her script there so we could call ahead and pick it up (takes an hour or so to make).

When she was around 10 months, she had a week long stay in hospital for an unrelated matter. It was a children's specific hospital and their pharmacy department advised she should be having tablets disolved in water not the compounding due to her weight/height etc. Much better for us as this is $30 a month cheaper and we can get the script filled across the road at a closer chemist. Being amazing, our little one took it without complaint for quite a while.

So here is where I may be TA:

At about 15 months bubs decides pills in water are gross (fair enough), so we go to the GP and get a

[UK] Why do most community pharmacists not bother to do clinical checks?

As a recent locum (floater for US folks), I've noticed that the majority of pharmacies that aren't Boots have pharmacists that don't bother to do a clinical check, never doing more than what would be expected of an Accuracy Checking Technician. I am actively prejudiced against for doing a clinical check, and called out for being slow for taking the extra couple of minutes to do so.

It just strikes me as odd that so many Pharmacists just don't want to do the job they trained for. This lack of effort and care will just result in pharmacists being phased out of pharmacies entirely just like the government are pushing for.

Can I go to the pharmacist for acne during the pandemic???

After many moons of trying to treat the acne myself with a good skincare routine, I think I'm ready to seek outside help. I don't know why I haven't yet considered this option but after googling acne treatments, the NHS website suggest first port of call should be the pharmacist. But is this a legitimate reason to just wander in and ask the question? It's just over the road and they have these huge glass screens in front of the counter so it seems safe enough?

Also, can someone please tell me why you apparently *have to* be on contraception if female and on an acne treatment? I tried to go through the online acne clinic with Superdrug and had to tick a box that said this. I'm not on contraception because the pill made my anxiety 1000x worse so I guess that option is out.

Cheers!

Advice from some pharmacists

I’m a psychiatric PA. One of my patients is an 8 year old male with ADHD and PTSD. He is currently on Zoloft 12.5 qHS, Strattera 25 mg qd and we had just trialed Vyvanse which we will not be continuing.

My issue is I just heard from his therapist that the pharmacists are calling the adoptive parents and stating they have serious concerns and an 8 year old should not be on these medications.

I work with many children and this is a fairly light dose of meds and I have spent a lot of time working with the family on Med anxiety. I’m frustrated to say the least that a lot of that work is being negated by someone who is likely well meaning but doing some serious damage.

My question for you all is how would you suggest I address this? I don’t want to come in tubs blazing but the pharmacists has the family considering seeking services elsewhere which would mean all new I take, therapist, psychiatric care. I want to ask them to please contact me if they have concerns but also want to poli

Drs and pharmacists treat me like a drug addict

LONG STORY:

I’ve had symptoms of narcolepsy for as long as I can remember (excessive sleepiness, hypnagogic hallucinations, etc.) but wasn’t diagnosed until my late twenties. I was being treated by a neurologist for arm pain when one day, at the beginning of an appointment, he asked how I was doing. Not knowing that it wasn’t normal, I told him how I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a cat at the end of my bed. It turned to where I saw a long, skinny, hairless tail and realized it was a huge rat. I jumped out of bed, turned on the light, and started to frantically search for this rat so it didn’t attack my son who was sleeping in my bed. After a couple of minutes, I guess I came back to reality and told myself it couldn’t possibly be real. The look on his face was all I needed to know that there was something wrong. Lol.

He referred me to a sleep Dr who asked me a few questions and made me fill out a questionnaire. He recommended a MSLT. I was on several SSRI’s at the time

Had my consult on 5/23. Card went active on like 5/26 with a start date of 5/30 and received it today as did someone else we know who did their consult on 5/26. Seems to have def gone out in a batch.

Just called Terravida and have my appointment with the pharmacist in 20 minutes and I'm so happy! Now to just find an ATM to take out more cash! 😬

Pharmacist budget cut to 78 hours, RXM staying at 42 and Staff at 40 where he has to float to hit his full hours, anyone experience this?

So basically like the title says. My pharmacy is being cut from an RPH budget of 82 a week to 78 with operating hours changing from 8 - 8 weekdays to 9 - 8. I stay scheduled at 42 per week and I've been informed my staff pharmacist will continue to get his full 40 as he is a RX80. They are stating that one of his shifts will be at an alt location since our pharmacy's budget cannot account for those hours. Anyone else have a pharmacy operate this way? How do the schedules look? How does the staff feel about having to float? Any insight would be appreciated.

[WeWantOut] 30F Pharmacist 30M Buildings Engineer USA -> Canada/Anywhere

With the recent pandemic as a major spark in the want to leave, our equity in the US is quickly draining. We have relatively secure jobs, but very localized to our areas. We're both college educated and have some savings but currently own a house in the US and our families etc, are all tied to the US.

I often think about how our grandparents knew when it was the right time to leave their mother countries to come to the US and when that "right time" was. I think I'm starting to serious doubt the commitment my country has to support us long term and I want to know my government at least has the skill to show from a marketing standpoint they still care about their middle class.

What would you recommend?

In 1995 a Pew report predicted a pharmacist surplus and recommended closing 20-25% of pharmacy schools...AACP and NACDS disagreed.

Saw this in the NABP Report of the Task Force on Manpower Shortage from 1999.

https://nabp.pharmacy/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/TF_Pharmacy_Manpower_Report_1999.pdf

The Pew Report assumed a growing dependence on paraprofessionals, a consolidation of chain pharmacies, and an increased reliance on automation.

However, in 1999, representatives from the Pharmacy Manpower Project, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) told members of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Task Force on Manpower Shortage that the Pew Report appeared to be out of touch.

Hospital pharmacists: does knowing the hospital's EMR system make you a more appealing candidate for hiring?

Currently work in a hospital using Meditech but wanting to find more work (in the future obviously..I know it would be hard right now). I am wondering if there is some easily accessible way that anyone has found to familiarize yourself with these systems to make yourself more marketable to other hospitals that use systems like Epic or Cerner.

Saw that Epic has an actual certification program but that requires you to be employed under an Epic system, go to an on-site training, etc. There is also some YouTube Epic training but it is geared toward physicians.

Would you think that knowing the system would make a candidate more appealing to a hiring hospital and does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

I despite the term "provider" so I won't use it. However, seeing this and this post made me think that there would be benefit in a private subreddit similar to r/AskPsychiatry where physicians, NPs, PA's, and pharmacists who are involved in psychiatric care can ask/answer questions for each other. Maybe something like r/AskPsychopharm or something like that. Obviously nothing takes the place of formal training but I can think of multiple times in residency where I've had "silly" questions or just random thoughts that I don't want to ask an attending about but would like someone to bounce ideas off of after doing my own lit review.

I think a private subreddit would be better than posting on r/Psychiatry or r/AskPsychiatry so people don't get others later going through their history criticiz

Why do pharmacists think their only job is to verify and that’s it?

We have a floater rph who’s in for one regular staff due to an injury and he makes us do everything but verify. He won’t even take a second to mix or give a consultation unless he HAS to. If we’re all tied up he will not help a single customer or answer a single phone. If it’s a doctor line he will let it go on hold until a tech can try to see if we can handle it. Keep in mind that we’re pretty much dead right now so there’s excuse of being too busy. Even if we were too busy your job as a pharmacist is to help patients that is the whole reason why you went to pharmacy school. Technicians are there to help and aid not do everything for you while you sit on a chair complain that’s we’re not moving fast enough. We are not your servants.

Question to pharmacists about what some might call "ridiculous prescriptions"

I'm from the UK so I'm not sure if this would be as bad over the pond, but I'm not a pharmacist but have an interest in medicine and pharmacology.

Do you sometimes think, especially for younger individuals, "what the hell is their doctor thinking" or "how is this person standing" when you get a script like e.g. a combination of a couple of sedating antidepressants, an antipsychotic, a gabapentinoid like pregabalin, a few different types of benzos, maybe some codeine or tramadol and z-drugs? And how often do you get these?

I called her pharmacy and physician to tell them what happened and now she’s pissed. She’s had a history of abusing Xanax and her cousin OD’d a couple of months back. TIFU- By going full Karen on a pharmacist (sorry, a bit long)

I spent 5 hours trying to get one prescription filled.

It should have been easy- I fill the same prescription every month on the same day, for at least 2 years now. It is HIGHLY controlled (not pain meds) & I'm in a national database that knows how much I'm supposed to get, the last time I got them & the next possible time I can get more. Because of a change in my insurance (it was incorrectly billed), I paid way more than usual and knew I'd have to take it up with the insurance company. Two weeks later, after hearing back from my insurance rep, I called my pharmacy & asked them if they would check to see if I was owed a refund.

In a nutshell: They accidentally ran the prescription through (when checking if I was entitled to a refund), as if it were being filled for real & it set it up in all the databases as filled, causing refusal from everyone.

I had moved and was forced to switch to a new pharmacy. I spent an hour in CVS, waiting for my prescription to be fi

Pharmacist might have screwed up my vial

I just picked up my Test vial from Walgreens and as I was there I bought some other stuff including an ice cold energy drink. When I got home I realized she put the energy drink in the same bag as the testosterone. I know if the temperature gets too low the testosterone will crystalize or fall out of solution. I took the testosterone out of the bag immediately when I noticed and didn’t see any noticeable crystals but is it now more susceptible to crystalizing?

My pharmacist and techs are great, but that's my problem

Hi everyone I hope this post is allowed, if I'm breaking any rule I apologize. I think it's allowable because it relates to the field and does include a tale of my experience but if mods feel otherwise I understand.

I have been using the same corner of happiness pharmacy for about 3 years now and I have consistently been blown away by the service. They're all so great and have gone above and beyond many times. I want to do something nice for them and I don't know what is appropriate and/or would be appreciated.

I was hoping I could get some suggestions from you? Is this appropriate? I was thinking along the lines of dropping off coffee and donuts, cookies, etc but I'm open to any ideas. I just want to do something they'll genuinely enjoy. I also thought about just going in and asking everyone what they'd like for lunch from a deli nearby or giving them each a gift card with enough to buy themselves lunch...? What would make you smile if a customer did it for you?

Thank y'all again

What the hell are pharmacists here for?

Hello guys! Hope you’re doing as well as can be during these times. Hope the title isn’t too click-batey.

The whole world is arguing about hydroxychloroquine and it made me think. Why the hell are we not consulting with the DRUG EXPERTS about proper drug therapy for COVID-19? Pharmacists study for years to obtain clinical knowledge of medications and drug therapy and the world doesn’t so much as think about us? What the hell is the point?

I urge all Pharmacists and Technicians to band together. Demand your stores be curbside or Drive-thru.

Once everyone in the US starts getting their stimulus checks we will see a dramatic rise in cases. Right now a lot of people don’t have money to burn so they are home. The first two weeks after the checks come in will probably be the worst.

Be proactive and start bringing this issue up to your managers.

We got to chatting about why the med was being used and he even said to
