Piano is a string instrument, not percussion.

While technically classified as a percussion instrument because a hammer β€œhits” the strings to create sound, the sounds themselves come from strings just like any other string instrument. Piano is also a mostly harmonic and melodic instrument, as opposed to rhythmic, which makes it more in line with the other string instruments than percussion instruments.

[TOMT] [Instrument/object] Used to make a specific percussion note. Have heard it in different movie/game BGM, but mostly associate it with 007 Goldeneye...

Ok so this is a bit of a weird one.

https://youtu.be/QbwkSJ4deN4 the single, low, hollow sounding strike at 00:02 seconds, occasionally repeats through the song (at 00:09, 00:17... and so on).

First heard this playing Goldeneye on my N64 back in the day, and in the movie. Am certain I’ve heard it in other franchises, for some reason I’m remembering it in other Cold War style movies.

Anyway, have wondered for a long time how this particular sound effect was created?

Always sounded like someone hitting one end of a long metal pipe and recording the echo of the strike from the other end.

Either that or a WW2/Cold War era submarine active sonar ping that’s been pitched down and echo added.

Any insight would be helpful!

[TOMT] [instrument] from Africa? Wooden melodic percussion, hit with a mallet, makes round bassy tone. Not a tongue drum, balafon, or xylophone

I barely remember this instrument from a world music store I was in a long time ago. I can’t remember exactly what it looked like, maybe it was large upright wooden blocks hit with these mallet/paddle things? I might be wrong.

I do remember the sound, it was a very round, woody bass tone, slightly nasally in the attack. I would write it as β€œBeewwmmmmm”. It did not have any kind of loose, rattly, or creaky sound that I usually associate with African instruments.

I’ve been trying to figure out what it was. It’s definitely not an mbira, a tongue drum, or a xylophone. It maybe might have been some weird balafon but it was all bass notes. It might not even have been African, in fact it may have just been some custom instrument.

Anyone know what it might have been?

[TOMT] [YT CHANNEL] the pure sounds of (obscure) percussion instruments

Hi everyone here on r/TipOfMyTongue :)

I'm looking for a YouTube channel that featured a musician playing various percussion instruments (one per video) you'd normally only hear blended in with the rest of the music. It was great for finding out how an instrument really sounds. The videos were probably about 20 seconds long. It was just the sound of the instrument and how it looks.

It was not "World Drum Club" although that channel is also worth checking out. The camera quality, or maybe the lighting, was mediocre, but the audio quality was excellent. It is probably more than 5 years old. I hope to find it back :)

Thanks for reading and possibly helping, and have a wonderful day!

Were slaves in North America really forbidden to make and play percussion instruments?

I don't know how to word this question very well, but I once read that "the main cause for the difference in the development of 'black music' in Brazil and North America was that NA slaves were forbidden to make any music with 'drum beats', while in South America there was no such rule". Was that really a difference? If so, what was was the reason behind banning percussion?

Thinking about buying a percussion instrument, what do you recommend?

Info: I'm an auxiliary and timpani percussionist, although I can also play mallets, those two are my favorites. The instrument needs to be able to fit in a college dorm room, weight doesn't matter though as I'm fairly certain I can lift most anything you give me (within the size constraint of college). I played Bass 5 and Tenors in Drumline before joining the Army for free college so I'm used to weights...

I'm looking at a Djembe or a Cojon, although I'm open to suggestions!

I love concert toms and aux, although I've recently gotten into handdrums in the past two years.

Imma make a poll later based on the suggestions I get!

Edit: I currently have:

  • 1 set of Dynasty Tenors (Quint)
  • A Heavy Hitter tenor Pad
  • A full size Xylophone
  • A Keyboard
  • And a shit ton of pads
