One of my favorite orchestra pieces of all time is Symphonic Metamorphosis by Paul Hindemith. My question today is which of the four is your favorite movement, and why?

Here’s the piece if you haven’t heard it: https://youtu.be/RthuLePDo3A

My favorite movement is movement II: Scherzo. I absolutely love chaos in music, so I enjoy stuff like The Rite of Spring or Give Us This Day, and similar works. But I also love melody, and more precisely, repetition, which is something that a lot of β€œchaotic” classical pieces lack. In this movement, the same 22 bar phrase repeats over and over, yet never becomes less interesting, and slowly becomes more chaotic. One thing that composers tend to commonly use to get the rowdy and rambunctious feeling is loud brass melody, which this movement does. But to give it that extra push into shredding chaos is near constant fast triplets in the winds/strings. Then, when the melody finally shifts to trombone, then horn, and slowly growing to the whole brass section, it just sends shivers down my spine every time I hear it. Then it switches to winds and ooooohhhhh that fast bassoon stuff is what I live for. And it wraps all up by ending nicely in pianissimo, which isn’t what anyone was expecting. It’s just so satisfying to listen to, I think I’m addicted. Also, as a tuba player myself, I appreciate how much Hindemith uses the tuba compared to other composers, and in this movement, the tuba has a fast melody line below the rest of the brass all to itself during the B section. And I must say, it feels good to be important.

Now what do you guys think?

Highly underrated piece: Paul Hindemith's Quartet for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano (1938)

I just performed this piece for the first time yesterday, and I'm doing it again on the 12th on a recital with Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. You'd think the Hindemith Quartet would receive more recognition considering that it's one of only three known pieces, and easily the most memorable, to be written for this instrumentation prior to the Messiaen.

The first impression I had of Paul Hindemith was from my clarinet teacher in high school, who was coaxed into performing his Clarinet Concerto by a professor in college and apparently never recovered from the experience. Too often I've heard from her and from others that Hindemith is considered aurally inaccessible by performers and listeners alike who prefer more conventionally tonal music; in my opinion there is enough drama woven into the (decidedly tonal) Quartet to captivate even the toriest audience members. Before our ensemble settled on the program for our upcoming recital, we considered a half-dozen other pieces, some of which (Paul Moravec's Tempest Fantasy, Charles Wuorinen's Tashi) would quite possibly have pushed our collective ability too far to learn them in only a few rehearsals. Others (including Peter Schickele's Quartet) just didn't wear well on our ears after a couple of readings. The Hindemith was the single piece we read that was not only both wholly playable and eminently listenable, but such a rewarding experience that every time we rehearse it I feel like I find some other small thing (maybe a particular sonority or formal element) to enjoy about Hindemith's composition.

In case anybody would like to take a listen, here's a wonderful recording from Naxos (or if you prefer a concert video, here's one from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center). I would love to see this piece considered among the most enjoyable and admirable clarinet chamber works of the 20th century.
