I love the idea of newsstand comics, and comics being in grocery stores and gas stations. I would love to see them make a come back, but I donβt know how likely that is. However, since the publishers have started ditching Diamond, maybe there is hope?
Any thoughts, or insight would be appreciated!

Question for the community here. From the research I have done it seems that the newsstand variants prior to 1985 are more common than their direct market counterparts. Yet I still see comics listed with βNEWSSTANDβ from before 1985, as if it is more sought after.
My question is, if the collectibility of a book is that it is rare or there are fewer copies of it than other variations, wouldnβt direct copies of books pre 1985 be more rare? Or is it that newsstands are just plain more sought after no matter the time period? If this is so, why if they are more common do people not look for the direct copies?
missing 4 Year old Alfred Beilhartz
This case takes place a long time ago, back in 1938. The first issue of Action Comics featuring a new super hero named Superman hits newsstands. You could buy a brand new house for less than four thousand dollars, and a loaf of bread was only nine cents. The Nazi party was becoming more conspicuous in Germany, normalizing anti-Semitism while German troops invaded Austria. In other words, a completely different world from what weβre used to today!
He was a four-year-old boy who lived on 3225 Quebec Street in Denver, Colorado with his mother, father, and nine siblings. 3225 Quebec Street has since turned into commercial land, losing any trace of the house in which Alfred once lived, as do all things that fade with time. But on that summer day, they werenβt at home. The family was relaxing on July 3rd 1938 in the Rocky Mountain National Park. This national park encompasses 415 square miles of mountains, meadows, lakes and hiking trails; itβs a gorgeous location!
The Beilhartz family, as well as some family friends, set up camp roughly a quarter mile west of the Fall River Lodge. In 1938 the camping area looked a bit different than it does today, as you can imagine. The Fall River Lodge used to be located just south of the west exit of the current Lawn Lake Trailhead parking lot. The camping party was located near where the Roaring and Fall Rivers met, just below Horseshoe Falls.
The family woke bright and early the morning of July third. William Beilhartz, Alfredβs father, decided to walk to the nearby stream to wash up. Alfred, binging the sweet little boy that he was, accompanied his daddy to the stream to do the same. Oran Bronson and Walter Hansen, friends of the Beilhartz family, had also set out to freshen up roughly 500 feet upstream from Alfred and William. William and Alfred finished their wash before Oran and Walter, and William headed back to camp. Alfred walked upstream to follow Oran and Walter once they were finished!
Once Oran and Walter returned to camp, the group noticed Alfred was not with them. He had gone missing between the time William headed back to camp and when Oran and Walter returned. I am unable to ascertain if the pair knew Alfred was planning on following them back to camp or not, and had gotten lost while still in the stream!

Collected as kid, had that collection stolen and now decades later rediscovered my passion for reading and collecting. While I just collect and read what I like and donβt buy graded books, I do like to speculate on value of older books and was just wondering peoples opinions on what their thought process is when on the hunt?
I used to live in Warren and would frequent Newsbreak in Swansea MA. Iβve been living in Warwick for about five years now, and have yet to find a place that has a large of a selection of magazines.
Occasionally Iβll go to Barnes & Noble, but their selection pales in comparison to a good newsstand.
Can anyone recommend some places in RI with a great selection of magazines?
I have a copy of Daredevil #10 (2nd appearance of Echo) Newsstand Edition in what I think is vf/nm, and since the price has jumped so much the past few days for some reason, I've thought about trying to sell it. However, there is very little sale history on Newsstand copies of this book; eBay says a VG sold for $60, but that's all since the price has spiked.
Does anyone know what the price of this book is in higher grades?
Hello all,
I have recently begun with collecting comic books. 20-25 years ago, growing up I was really into it, but I collected them printed in a local language version.
I want to collect the ones I had with their βrealβ original version. I see comics have a direct version and newsstand version.
I was looking at buying this one for example:
Is the direct version, with the Captain Amerika logo consider the definite version, or is the newstand version considered the same?
Is this something YOU consider when collection?
Thanks in advance
(Hope this was not a stupid question.)
Newsstand variants have been a chase for many collectors for several years and often command a premium. I completely understand that collectors want the rarest form of a book and newsstand issues often have a lower print run. I also understand that newsstands have less high grade copies as collectors who would have taken care of their books were most likely to buy from comic shops instead of the local 7/11 in the 90s. My earliest comics were newsstands as my mom would pick me up an occasional Spider-Man or X-Men book at the local Albertsons when I was a kiddo and I read those to shreds!!
I was recently looking up some 80s X-men and I'm seeing people actively advertising "NEWSSTAND" variants and getting a significant difference in final sales price over direct editions.
A newsstand X-Men 141 CGC 9.8 from 1981 recently sold on eBay for about $1,300. The average value on that book according to Gocollect sales data is around $625 (most recent sales are in the $600-700 range for direct editions).
Here's the thing, newsstands in the 90s and 2000s maybe rarer, but this is not the case at all for 80s books. Prior to the mid 80s, it's the direct editions which are rarer as comic book shops and the direct market were just starting to pop up more.
Anyway, I guess this long-winded post is part PSA and part questionaire... As a collector, do you actively chase after newsstands? Do you go for all newsstands or just the rare ones? Would you pay effectively double for an already expensive book to get that little barcode on it?
I am genuinely interested to know.
