That time an amazing mother saved me from a fossil-hating EM. AKA: What do you can a Creationist in a dinosaur museum?

I meant call not can. Doh!

This happened many moons ago, when cell phones weren’t smart phones yet and Brad and Angelina had only 2 children together.

I worked one summer at a very popular local dinosaur museum. It was, and still is, one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. The people were amazing (all geeks!) and we were all from different walks of life so it was so neat to hear stories from all over my country.

Anways, on to the main part. The museum was awesome and built around the principles of evolution. You could (back then, it has changed a lot since then) walk through the different eras of our planet and see the corresponding fossils of the creatures that lived then. Lots of fossils and HUGE ones.

We had had some problems with Creationists β€œprotesting” outside our museum, saying that evolution wasn’t real and that were propagating the ideas of the Devil. They’d show up with signs denouncing our museum, trying to dissuade people from coming in, but honestly – it’s the middle of a literal desert, it’s a major tourist attraction and it’s air conditioned – no one was being turned off by them.

One day, I’m minding my own business at work, wandering through the various expositions to help anyone or talk about dinosaurs with children (best part of the job). I’m in one of the theropod display rooms and a woman comes up to me to ask about the main display feature: a complete fossilized skeleton of a giant ass T-Rex. She asks how fossils are formed, so I begin the tale of death and sediment when she interrupts me. Here’s how it goes:

Me: Mostly Enrobed

EM: Creationist crazy person

SM: Saviour Mother and her 5 kids that were incredibly well behaved

Me: So, once the dinosaur died, it got covered in sediment and other things-

EM: Where was the copper?

Me: Pardon?

EM: The copper. Our priest showed us how you can fossilize anything, even a teddy bear, by leaving it in a copper bowl filled with water, so where was the copper? smug face

Me: I’m sure there’s copper in the sediment, but that’s not how these were fossilized. It happened over many thousands of years.

EM: 6000 years to be precise, when our earth was created and the Devil put these horrible things in here to try and tempt us all away from Jesus!

at this point, her voice is raised and people start looking at us, including SM and her gaggle of children. I go into customer service mode.

Me: I understand that your faith has different beliefs that those presented here, however we present the

I saw a shrunken head in a museum... and I think I recognised it

I never knew my Mother. I was only eight months old when she died, well when she was murdered. I don’t know much else about it; in fact, I didn’t even know she was murdered until two years ago when I was fifteen. You see, my Dad doesn’t like to talk about her at all and so he never discussed why she was no longer with us. I have seen photos of her and so I know what she looks like, but I wasn’t told much about her. I always thought that she died of a sickness or maybe in a freak accident, so I was very surprised when I found out that she had been murdered.

I wish that my Father would talk about it more though, because I want to know how it happened. I have heard a few rumours at school about how she died. I overheard one kid say that she was kidnapped and held for ransom before being killed when my Dad didn’t pay. Another kid told me that she was decapitated, and her head was never found, so I really didn’t know what to believe and I couldn’t ask my Dad to fill in the details.

Ever since I found out about my Mother’s fate, however, I have become overly interested in true crime and I especially enjoy learning about unsolved mysteries. That’s how I found out about the strange museum that suddenly appeared in my town. My friend, Ellie, had first told me about it.

β€œHave you seen that museum that opened in the old library?”, she asked me one day at lunchtime.

I replied that I hadn’t seen it and that I didn’t know anything about it, so she went on to explain what it was.

β€œI heard that it is a museum that is all about famous murder cases and has a lot of exhibits that feature real crime scene photos and even a few items that were taken from murder sites” she explained β€œI’m going there on Saturday, did you want to come?”.

I thought about it for a moment, but then remembered that I had planned to spend the day with Dad, so I had to tell her that I couldn’t make it, which she seemed disappointed about. I thought about this museum for the rest of the school day, and I begun to wonder what crimes would have exhibits. Maybe they will have an exhibit for my Mum, I thought, maybe I could find out more about her murder. I thought long and hard about whether or not I should try and go to the museum and finally, I decided that I would go on Sunday. My Dad was going out of town that day for work, so it was the perfect time to go.

I spent the rest of the week leading up to Sunday both excited and nervous. I was excited because I knew that I would find the
