/r/anime Awards 2020 Anime of the Year Jury Discusses "Kaguya-sama Season 2"

Previous Discussions

#Introduction

This post was collaboratively written by the Anime of the Year Jury of the 2020 /r/anime Awards. It was also organized, edited and put together by their category host, /u/JoseiToAoiTori. Kaguya-sama Season 2 was chosen by vote for this discussion which isn't fully indicative of its position in the jury's final rankings as each juror's individual perspective is subject to change. Similar perspectives of individual jury members are grouped together for clarity.

Jury Members: /u/ArcaneGarbageman, /u/deafnesss, /u/FrenziedHero, /u/furno5000, /u/hauntmeagain, /u/--Ananas--, /u/MalacostracaFlame, /u/MisterJaguar, /u/Nickknight8, /u/Ok_Structure1319, /u/Patureau, /u/PerfectPublican, /u/rudygnuj, /u/Schinco, ShakespeareInLove (alias), /u/Theleux, /u/Thrasher439

##1. Do you think Kaguya-sama significantly reinvents the romcom formula? If not, does it manage to set itself apart from other romcoms?

###Familiar formula with brilliant execution

There is an interview with Aka Akasaka, the author of Kaguya-sama, where he stated that he was surprised that so many people were claiming that his work had such a unique concept. He was quite shocked that it hadn't been done before. Kaguya-sama doesn't reinvent the romcom formula in any significant way, nor does it need to. A romcom that wishes to set itself apart would attempt to subvert the viewer's expectations, but Kaguya-sama takes elements that romcom fans are familiar with and turns them up to eleven while being self-aware in doing so. So while Kaguya-sama isn't a particularly unique take on the genre, it's just a solid romcom with a thoughtful story and likable characters. Visually engaging skits allow the show to branch out from its formula and develop the supporting cast. Each character has defining personality traits leading to some well-timed jokes, great reactions and fun character dynamics. The dialogue is sharp, the mind games are entertaining, and the mix of mostly episodic vignettes with plenty of nods and callbacks to previous skits make for a cohesive and entertaining story of adolescent love. Season 2 in particular shifts further away from the unique hook that Sea

Isopoda

Isopoda Language Download PDF Watch Edit Isopoda is an order of crustaceans that includes woodlice and their relatives. Isopods live in the sea, in fresh water, or on land. All have rigid, segmented exoskeletons, two pairs of antennae, seven pairs of jointed limbs on the thorax, and five pairs of branching appendages on the abdomen that are used in respiration. Females brood their young in a pouch under their thorax.

Aquatic species mostly live on the seabed or bottom of freshwater bodies of water, but some taxa can swim for a short distance. Terrestrial forms move around by crawling and tend to be found in cool, moist places. Some species are able to roll themselves into a ball as a defense mechanism or to conserve moisture.

There are over 10,000 species of isopod worldwide, with around 4,500 species found in marine environments, mostly on the seabed, 500 species in fresh water, and another 5,000 species on land. The order is divided into eleven suborders. The fossil record of isopods dates back to the Carboniferous period (in the Pennsylvanian epoch), at least 300 million years ago, when isopods lived in shallow seas. The name Isopoda is derived from the Greek roots iso- (from ἴσος Γsos, meaning "equal") and -pod (from ποδ-, the stem of πούς poΓΊs, meaning "foot").[2][3]

[Anime Awards] 2018 /r/Anime Awards Nominations! Vote Here!

#LINK TO THE NOMINATION WEBSITE

awards wa mou shinderu

Welcome back, everyone, to the 3rd Annual /r/anime Awards! With the New Year only days away, it’s the perfect time to reflect back on what we’ve done over the past year. How much time have we spent watching seasonals, and which, if any, were actually worth watching? What better way to decide that than by picking your favorites of the year to be nominations for the prestigious /r/Anime Awards?

This year we have mercifully moved away from the previously used Contest Mode system that everyone seemed to despise and on to much, much better things with this lovely new website Santa left for us under the tree! Most of it is pretty slick and intuitive, but some stuff does require a bit of explaining.

As always, we take public feedback seriously, and you’ve made it quite clear that you want to decide where the shows you vote for are allocated. You can now do exactly that!

Simply tab through the genre categories and scroll or search for the shows you'd like to nominate in each. To emphasize: doing this means you are nominating the show for the given tab's genre category. Please don't assign things to genres if you're not voting for them.
Don't worry about splitting votes, vote for the shows you most like in the categories you think are most appropriate. The shows with the most total votes will go on to become nominees in whatever genre they were most selected. For instance, a show with 1500 votes across three different genres will beat out a show with 1000 votes in one genre. If all the top nominations for a given genre are taken, the show will compete in the next common genre allocation, up to a point. There will be a minimum threshold amount of votes that a show must get in a genre in order to be considered, so as to avoid less popular categories being filled with shows that don't really fit the genre but didn't make it elsewhere. (If that's confusing, don't worry about it. We're just preventing unlikely issues)

It works the same for the Character categories, where you vote on where you want certain characters to go (main/supporting, dramatic/comedic), with the exception of Antagonist, which can have overlap with other character categories. All other categories are very straightforward, just vote for whatever you think is most deserving of a nomination in a particular category. The top

[/r/Anime Awards] 2016 And the winners are...

#How to read the results

The results are ordered from best to worst by the jury of that award. You can then see the following metrics:

  • Votes - The % of votes gotten.
  • Interest - The % of voters who have declared they watched the anime partially or completely.
  • Finished - The % of voters that has finished the anime. The difference between "Interest" and "Finished" tells a lot about accessibility of the show.
  • Supporters - The % of voters who declared they finished the show and picked it as their best. Or rather, the ratio of "finished" declarations to votes it got. This has funny implications and you're going to find out why later.

Highest scores in each column are bolded.

An entry that has been present in the popular vote, but discarded by the jury is marked by italics and placed at the end.

#Action

Jury pick: Haikyuu!! S2+3

>We felt that Haikyuu!! succeeded the most as an action series in 2016 because it was able to elicit the strongest reactions from us. No other nominee in this category got us more hyped or excited while watching the action unfold. Haikyuu is able to create a strong connection between its sports setting and the audience by being exemplary in virtually every category that is important for the genre. This includes superb animation, skilled direction, complete clarity of action, and excellent character development right on the court. Both of the consistently high-quality seasons that aired in 2016 are worthy of the top spot.

Community Pick: Mob Psycho 100 with 42.9% votes

Verdict: Votes Interest Finished Supporters
Haikyuu!! S2+3 13.0% 45.9% 34.5% 37.8%
Mob Psycho 100 42.9% 84.8% 71.1% 60.3%
JoJo Part 4 DiU 18.3% 47.1% 39.0% 47.0%
Boku no Hero Academia 16.9% 83.2% 73.6% 23.0%
Keijo!!!!!!!! 8.8% 62.9% 38.8% 22.7%

It was a super tough choice between the top 3 nominees especially since they're all really excellent series. In the end though, the other choices got... served by Haikyuu.

#Adventure

Jury Pick: Flip Flappers

>Flip Flappers, for the majority of its run, consisted of episodic adventures with vibrant animation and dynamic fight sequences, that could be wondrous, horrific, tense, or exciting depending on the episode's theme. Should You Watch It? Summer 2018 Edition

Spring 2018 Edition’s Thread

The character limit has been reached, so, for those new to the thread, please read this comment for the starting and ending details!

Without further ado, let us start our "Should You Watch It?" Summer 2018 Edition!

##Asobi Asobase

####A Perspective, courtesy of /u/AnimeEngineerYoutube:

Watch It

β€œAsobi Asobase: Cute girls doing surreal things cranked up to 11.

Three middle school girls join forces to make a club. The only problem is all three have their own version of what the club is about. In spite of this, the three girls will stop at nothing to maintain their not-actually-a-club.

Armed with an arsenal of moderately coherent gags, this anime isn’t shying away from bold jokes and employs a liberal amount of visual comedy to really drive the points home, all while poking fun at established tropes of the genre and not taking itself too seriously.

Every gag seems to raise stakes and tension, in situations where there otherwise should be none, and our three protagonists lie and manipulate to keep the worst from happening.

The downside of this mix is that the cute moments are so heavily contrasted by both the visual comedy and the almost sinister outbursts from the characters, that those few cute moments may as well not be there. If you’re here for moe, you’re outta luck.

Up for some solidly written comedy with visual gags that pokes fun of the cute girls genre? Asobi Asobase may be the show for you.”

####Another Perspective, courtesy of /u/futuristic-arrival:

Consider It

β€œIf you consider abrupt shouting to be the peak of comedy then this is the show for you! Asobi Asobase follows three high school girls, Olivia (a devious foreign student), Hanako (a salty wannabe popular girl) and Kasumi (a quiet but intimidating girl), in their quest to... pass the time together at school.

A good deal of the jokes revolve around yelling over relatively mundane occurrences and presenting the characters off model for added absurdity. If you enjoy more thought out comedic sketches then this is probably not going to rank high for you this season. To its credit it has a very lovely, simple art style (when it’s being used) and the characters are refreshing, if a little generic.

/r/anime Awards 2018 Announcement and Juror Application Thread

LINK TO THE JUROR APPLICATION

EDIT: The deadline has been extended from the original October 31 to November 4 because I forgot about the Halloween Megathread and meta thread taking up sticky slots.

Welcome back, everyone, to the 3rd Annual /r/anime Awards, the sub's yearly event to celebrate all the time we've wasted on seasonals and to argue about which one was most worth watching! We have some big changes this year based on community feedback in our surveys and ambitious plans we're trying out for the first time to increase community involvement. Like every year, our goal is to improve over what we have done previously and we think these new changes will make the awards a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Here's a look at how things went last year: Announcement | Results | Infographic

And here's how things will work this year:

##About the Awards

The basic setup remains unchanged from previous years' but there have been some changes, mainly to nominations. As usual, the Awards will be split into Public and Jury portions. Both get to nominate shows and select separate winners, but do so through very different processes.

The Public is, well, everyone on /r/anime. This year you will select 4 nominations using a snazzy new website being developed by local tech guru /u/geo1088. It will allow you to simultaneously vote for your favorite show, movie, or character and what category you think they belong in. The nominations with the highest total votes go to the category where they received the most votes, depending on if they have enough to be nominated in that category. To give an example: If Show A got 200 votes in Comedy and 300 votes in Slice of Life it'd become a Public nomination in SoL with 500 total votes. However, if 500 is not enough to get into SoL but is enough to get in the Top 4 for Comedy, it goes there instead. The Public nominations are combined with the Jury's for a total of up to 8 which are shared between the two groups. You will then get to choose the winner in a series of voting threads that will be posted in January.

The Jury is a group of fellow users selected by the Awar

Character creation for newbs

Hey, Outsiders! Thought I'd make my first post by clearing up the aspect of the game that can scare away new players: character creation.

The Outside boasts some of the most impressive variety in the gaming world. To support this, it has an involved and complex character creation process. Most noobs (like me) found it almost impossible to navigate the seemingly-arbitrary organization they refer to as "taxonomy." I thought I'd share what I've learned to make it easier for other new Outsiders.

There are three main stages to creating a character:

1 - Taxonomy - Navigate the game's class organization to find the base template you want for your character. This will provide you with some base stats, traits, and skills. Note that it is cheapest to gain stats and attributes this way than to simply make your build from scratch.

2 - Stats - Depending on how far you went down the taxonomic tree, you may have some Evolution Points (EPs) left over. Feel free to spend these on improved stats, like intelligence, health, and stealth. You can also sacrifice some stats to gain more EPs (to a certain point). Your stats will determine what traits and skills you can use, so choose wisely!

3 - Attributes - Your character template will usually have some default abilities divided into traits (passive) and skills/abilities (active). For example, all players who chose the Aves class will have the [Flight] skill. You can gain and sacrifice these characteristics for a more personalized build. This is where your creativity really comes through, though you should know that traits and skills that are uncommon or unheard of for your class will cost more and more points.

The most difficult part of this process is sifting through the taxonomy stage. Here are the most common paths you will take as you create your character using the original version (called the Linnaean tree). I won't include some builds that are relatively uninteresting (e.g. centipedes) and I won't go into detail where TierZoo has already uploaded a video (e.g. cats). I'll put the defining attribute after each one, and any common end points will be in all caps.

Let me know if I got anything wrong or you want more detail on any of these. Enjoy!
