[Thank You] Holiday flavored rambles and thanks

Guess who is rambling again? Yes, I am. Just like Thanksgiving, Christmas will be a regular day. I have not put out a single decoration, not even my annual shrine to Ricky Martin. That one hurts the most, since I purchased so much Ricky stuff over the summer. Unfortunately, I cannot take a photo for u/dwrfstr who started all of this by sending me a Ricky Martin birthday card. Anyway, much love to Ricky.

It is the end of the longest fucking year of my life. You feel that too, correct? During 2020, I have been using disposable face masks that the university bought for me. To do my part for the environment, I purchased some reusable masks. They were sewn with fabric of Depeche Mode album covers; I am not shitting you. Etsy, man. It has just about everything.

Speaking about the end of the year, I had to use the remainder of my Flexible Spending Account so that I did not lose 700 dollars. Working from home during the pandemic has brought down my medical costs to no more than 10

I am 28 years old, make $75,000 CAD, live in Ottawa, ON and work as a government analyst. (all dollar amounts in CAD)

Section One: Assets and Debt

Retirement: I work in government and have an employer-matched pension plan, so I just use my RRSP as a secondary long term saving option (I should look in to investing within it). My RRSP is currently sitting at about $3,000.

TFSA: $19,500 (my main long term/down payment savings account)

Savings account: $18,000 (putting away money for a down payment (someday, maybe))

Checking account: $3600 (I try to keep it around $4000, and transfer anything over that to my TFSA)

Credit card debt: none - I pay for almost everything on my credit cards but pay them off every month. I have three - one no-fee card that accumulates grocery points, one travel card, and one no-fee card that I use for shared expenses

Student loan debt: none - I was super lucky to pay for my undergrad through a combination of scholarships, an RESP my parents paid into that covered most of my first year, and working one well-paid summer job and 2-3 part time jobs during the academic

Section One: Assets and Debt

Retirement Balance: $35,000 in a SEP IRA through my employer. They match 2% if I contribute at least 4%. I currently contribute 8%.

$21,000 in my husband’s Roth IRA. He’s a PhD student and the university doesn’t let him contribute to a retirement account pre-tax, so we’ve been maxing a Roth for him each of the last few years. We haven’t yet put in the full amount for this year but have it set aside in our savings.

Savings account balance: About $42,000 spread across a couple of accounts.

Checking account balance: Around $4000.

Investments: About $15,000 in CDs which will be part of a down payment at some point.

About $20,000 in a mutual fund; my parents threw I think $1000 into this when I was very young and have just let it sit and grow since then. This will also probably go towards a down payment.

HSA: $1200. I was able to contribute to an HSA when I was on health insurance through my employer; I’m now on my husband’s health insura

BUDGET BREAKDOWN: ~$22k, 85 Person Beachside Rhode Island Wedding

It’s been almost 2 months since the wedding, and I decided I should probably give back to r/weddingplanning with a budget breakdown, since these posts were so helpful to me when I was planning!

Date: Saturday, September 7, 2019
Location: Narragansett, Rhode Island
Budget: $21,781 (if you don’t include our weeklong rental car and rental house, it’s only $18,931)
Contributions: MIL provided approx. $12k, my mom contributed approx. $1.5k, DH & I contributed approx. $8k
Guest list: Invited: 103 (Venue max was 90; we did a sort of rolling B list); RSVP’d yes: 84; actually showed up: 81 – all out of state, but close to half were within 3 hour driving distance

Professional photos here

THE GOOD: Almost everything, TBH. My grocery store cake was great, the rain from Hurricane Dorian cleared up like two hours before the wedding started, I loved my hair and makeup, we had the DJ play a lot of basic ass party/wedding music whi

Recap + budget breakdown: Chicagoland | 140 guests | ~40k

First things first, photos here! There aren’t a ton from the reception unfortunately; I tried to avoid posting photos with people’s faces other than ours.

Thanks to everyone here – I mostly lurked but read a lot of helpful advice so figured I would pass it forward. A pretty comprehensive (read: long) recap and budget breakdown follows below!

Budget: ~40k
We (29F/30M) were very fortunate that our parents covered most wedding-related expenses. The cost reflects (a) the number of guests, (b) that it was a fairly traditional ceremony + reception with a catered dinner, and (c) being in the Chicago area. I think we made pretty reasonable decisions and didn’t go too crazy – for what we got it could have been MUCH more expensive. See breakdown below!

Tradition / style: Catholic, white + Filipino, we were going for β€œelegant but not stuffy”, we like dancing, ice cream, and puzzles :)

Date and Location: Mid-July 2019, Evanston IL (just ou

I have received some weird conversations. What do I do?

So I got this weird conversation and my first thought was it was a scam, but my second thought was be polite in case it's not, so I sent a polite response. Now it's weird again and I'm not sure how to respond. Do I just block the person or should I report it to Etsy? Here are the emails:

Sender: Ahmid Date: 2 days ago 4:43am EDT Message: Sir .. How are you .. You can help me buy the premie 209 .. I'm outside the United States .. I have a mailbox that collected my shipments in Dillawy .. But ordering to change the cover to a different casing, to be sent to my country. How do you feel about printing in your store? I like design, printing's just stress, honestly.

Then, they give you a (Often times, people move their document margins outside of the print zone. You know who you are. Windows tells you. We Notice. And We Remember. )

LUDWAG Von Beethoven

My Secret Santa hit a homerun this year and this is the only way I possess to thank them for it. The packing slip contained no personal info or any clues to their reddit identity. On my likes, I wrote that I liked dogs, beethoven's 5th symphony, and that my favorite color was red. In addition, I hoped they wouldn't break their bank on my gift. That's exactly what I received!

I found in my mailbox one day none other than Ludwag Von Beethoven. A darling little print of a terrier interpretation of the great composer. I LOVE IT! I loved it so much that I bought more prints from the same artist.

My Secret Santa is awesome because they .....

  1. Found an clever way to cover so many of my "likes"
  2. Spent less than $20 like I hoped
  3. Supported local artisans (to me) by using Etsy
  4. Stimulated the economy (I loved Ludwag so much i went to the artist's etsy site and bought Monkzart and JS Bark).

Thank you secret santa, I hope that your life is good and that your attention to detail is a
