Is anyone else experiencing serious bugs with the latest MacOS version of VLC? Sometimes if i scroll through the timeline or change the volume the audio will cut out entirely, video will glitch out, or the media will just freeze entirely causing the program to stop responding. I am still running MacOS High Sierra, but I don't plan on updating any time soon because we all know how that goes...
Hi all, I think most Mathematica users have access to it through their company or university, and individual hobbyist users must be in the minority. macOS Big Sur is about to be released and I just received an email saying mathematica will stop working after I install it. I purchased a perpetual license to Mathematica home edition in 2018, but a few months later it stopped working with the introduction of macOS Catalina. The “perpetual” license required a paid upgrade just to continue working. I begrudgingly upgraded even though I required none of the new features.
Now less than a year later once again I need to upgrade just to keep it working on macOS Big Sur.
None of my other programs require an upgrade for every OS update. With Catalina and the restriction on 32 bit apps I kind of understood that an update might be absolutely necessary, but I do not understand this with macOS Big Sur. There’s an update for the operating system every year, it’s guaranteed.
What’s the point of having a so-called perpetual license if I need to keep upgrading it every year anyways?
For someone who is only using the program once or twice a year as a hobbyist, it doesn’t make sense anymore. I was an annual subscriber for three years before I decided to buy a perpetual license to avoid having to pay an annual fee, but at this point there is no difference anymore. After spending close to €1000 on subscriptions and then another €500 on the perpetual licenses I’m finally thinking of moving away from Mathematica. If Wolfram and their pricing policies were a little bit saner they will see much more success because the system is absolutely fantastic. But I think I’m stuck with Jupyter now. What a shame.

I’ve downloaded and installed the Python 3.8 package from Python.org
Every time I go into terminal it still tells me I’m running Python 2.7.
Went into the library and deleted the older versions of Python. Nothing will work. Can somebody help me with this super easy task that I can’t get right for some reason?

I'm not sure if this is a Mac issue or an emacs issue, but on my Windows and Linux machines, the "HOME" and "END" keys take the cursor to the beginning and end of the line, respectively. However, on my Macbook, they take the cursor to the beginning and end of the document. This only happens on emacs. In other editors like nano or vim, the "HOME" and "END" keys behave as they should.
Any way to fix this?

I successfully built my first Hackintosh, because of the collective smarts and generosity of the folks on this forum (in particular u/samkalel3 - whose post https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/comments/esvn4q/m93p_tiny_osx_catalina_10152_working_like_a_breeze/ i used heavily (but I couldn't comment and thank them on their post since it's archived. but thank you so much!)
Anyway, I had trouble finding Catalina 10.15.5 (10.XX.YY) specifically (which I needed to be able to use the updated Ktexts that u/Samkalel3 was making available. As you know, you can download whichever is the latest version of MacOS for each .XX numbered version, but you don't get to choose which .XX.YY version you download.
I availed myself to torrents for this, but i never really love this.
Do you guys know of a website that archives full installers for YY versions for every macOS out there?
(I'm working on cleaning up my notes for the install and sharing this back here, for folks who are as new as I am and want to just buy the exact same hardware I got -- still conveniently available on Amazon).

Is there any official statement why not? Since the game is developed in Unity where linux/macOS support is basically one click away during the build process, I don't think its technically motivated.
I was using DVD Studio Pro ver 4.1.2.
Obviously its an app thats been around for a while. It refuses to even try and open on my new iMac I got this week.

If you work with ultra high resolution images, you may be interested to know that Apple’s macOS Application, Preview, version 11.0 (and several previous versions) has issues displaying images if at least one dimension (side) is greater than 34040 pixels. When you zoom into the image at around 7% or greater, the image begins to disappear in tiled sections until the image has fully disappeared leaving just the background on display. You can open a supported image format that is as large as 34040 × 34040 but if just one dimension is greater than that, for example, 1 × 34041 or 34041 × 1, you’ll exceeded Preview’s limit. Therefore, the issue is not about the area of the image in pixels but instead about the length or width of the image in pixels.
Where can I find I installations of prior MacOS to run non-64 bit software in Parallels? Specifically Aperture. None of my old USBs I created with older OSs allow me to install in Parallels? Created with DiskMaker years ago.
Is there a trick to this I cannot find? I am currently running Catalina on my 2019 16” Mac if that gives context.
To mimic this glitch, just open two tabs, go to the first tab and load a website and go to the second tab and try to close the first tab. It doesn’t let you and the only way to close it is to right click and click close tab.
I know this is a bug because I just updated to macOS Big Sur.
I went thru all the steps and it said my flash drive was burned successfully. When I restart my computer and click on the tails OS this is the message I get. It then says, “Use macOS utilities to reinstall macOS or select another startup disk.” What does this mean?
I want to set up my SD2SCSI with multiple drives/partitions so I can run multiple versions of MacOS to maximize the software I can run.
Officially the 8600 supports 7.5.5 - 9.1. What versions does it make sense to actually set up though?
This is my plan so far:
- 7.5.5 (official CD, last version to support 24bit apps)
- 7.6.1 (official CD, PPC optimizations)
- 8.1 (first to support HFS+)
- 9.1 (for better internet/hardware access, unless I can get 9.2.2 to work)
It's MacOS 8 that I'm the least familiar with. I picked 8.1 because I know it works, it's what I'm using now temporarily to test the hardware. Is it worth having 8.5.1 / 8.6 instead or in addition to 8.1 as well?
From what I've gathered, 8.0/9.0 are both worth skipping.
If you do, system software updates can no longer be installed on the previous versions of macOS. Also you get an error on boot stating incompatible disk.
On a totally unrelated note: Anyone found a fix for this yet? I can wipe everything and restore from a backup, but I’m hoping there’s a more elegant way. Does removing the new APFS volumes help?

I was wondering why they listed mac as a supported platform, then removed all mentions of it? I clearly remember macOS as a platform it'll be on before.
On my MBP 15” 2018, I had never felt that macOS was slow, until I installed Catalina. It literally feels sluggish and reminds me of Windows days. Is it that Catalina is slow or my MBP is getting old?

Hello, I've been using Mojave (installed using a dosdude1 patcher) on my unibody MacBook Pro from mid-2010 for a few months now, and the thing is it started running quite slow compared to older versions and is constantly running at about 75 celsius (I have cleaned the internals out and changed the thermal paste). I've upgraded RAM to 6GB (swapped one 2GB stick with 4GB one I had laying around) and swapped stock HDD with a 240GB SSD on day 1 I got the system. I use it mostly for heavy web browsing on both Safari and Chrome, Spotify, Discord, Photoshop and much more since my main computer broke down recently. The question is, what is the best OS X/macOS version for this MacBook Pro? I'm alright with using older versions, before Mojave, Mavericks was my main OS for quite some time.

I'm wanting to keep a personal library of installers for the different versions of OSX/macOS (Intel 10.4 thru 10.15) to help support some macs. I have the originals downloaded from Apple which are not always the latest build, but I also found legit downloads of the final builds of each version.
Are there some Macs that won't support the latest build, and would thus necessitate keeping the older builds from Apple, or could I be fine with keeping just the newest builds?
So, this January I got myself a MacBook Pro which comes with macOS Catalina and unfortunately it doesn't support 32-bit apps. It's got the final version of Indesign but at work we have to use Indesign CS4 and I can't use it with this computer, so I use my old computer to use CS4. I've talked to a tech and he said if I use the latest version I could open all the files of my colleagues, but they can't open my files.
Is there ANY way to download CS4 to a new Mac?

This is the sort of game that Mac users tend to love, and yet our only option currently is the web "Demo" version.
I would happily pay money for the game, but I don't have access to Windows or Linux.
