Notes is MacOS' most quietly useful feature.

I recently switched to MacOS after growing up with Windows, and the Notes app has quietly been my favourite feature. After storing notes in Evernote & Google Docs, Notes beats them all. Reasons being:

  1. It feels modern - compared to Windows' Notepad, which feels clunky, featureless and outdated, and Google Docs which feels like a cheap ripoff of Word.
  2. Its purposefully limited - It gives enough variations on font styling to be useful, but not so much to be overwhelming. Likewise, implementation of tables, dot points are very simple and work exactly as I'd imagine. Comparatively, Google Docs just has too much stuff - It feels like trying to pick a new Netflix show and being overwhelmed with the sheer choice.
  3. Drawing - Drawings just slot right in with text, with enough movability to organise them, but not so much that you need to spend a long time doing it.
  4. Syncing - Flawless.

Above all, Notes feels like Apple removed everything superfluous and perfected what was left. Everything it has works flawlessly and everything missing doesn't feel necessary. For me, it's the perfect workhorse.

Thoughts?

macOS 12 naming thoughts?

With only a week away from WWDC, we will soon get a new version of macOS that will possibly include a new location in CA as its name. Big Sur was a big upgrade, so I would guess it would be a "Tock" year with more minor updates with possibly a couple of bigger changes to keep up with the new version.

However what do we think the name/location might be? In the past the Tock years have been around locations based on the year before. Yosemite -> El Capitan, Sierra -> High Sierra, but what about this year?

Thoughts?

macOS is the best place to use Remote Play on a PS5.

If you use a DualSense wired on a Mac, you get all the features: haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, microphone, speaker, everything.

On Android, Windows, iOS, at best you get adaptive triggers. With Windows, you can emulate haptic feedback, but there is a difference.

The only thing that the macOS version is missing is HDR. If they add that, it should have the full feature set.

Can we not all do the "where's macOS on the iPad" after the keynote?

I know a lot of people here want Apple to release macOS for the iPad. I don't believe they'll do that. Extrapolating from earlier years and posts on this and other subreddits over the last few months, I expect a lot of people will be disappointed and flood Reddit (not only this subreddit, but also other) with disappointment, anger, and the other stages of grief.

Can we instead focus on the positive things, new features and things that do make it to iPadOS?

If Apple does release macOS for iPadOS in some form I'll shut up about it being a bad idea. Deal?

Enjoy dubdub!

HOWTO: Configure a Python script to run on boot in Windows and macOS

I'm working on a project that requires distributed data processing (no, not cryptomining... compiling public data from the federal government into some relational databases for personal use).

As part of this task, I have a few dedicated machines on which I'd like to run a Python agent-type script as a background process. Notably, I want to run it on system boot, not within the context of a specific login. Some of these tasks run for multiple days (e.g., the main database is over a terabyte), and I don't want my actions of logging into or out of the machine to terminate the process and interrupt or ruin a bunch of work.

I've blown about 15 hours figuring out how to configure a Windows machine and a macOS machine to run a Python script on boot. This task involved a lot of false starts and missteps, since much of the information on Stack is either outdated or just plain wrong. And, of course, I encountered a lot of unhelpful Wisdom of the Ancients along the way.

In order to save others the hassle, here is my short guide to configuring a Windows 10 machine and a macOS Big Sur machine to run a Python script on boot.

Caution - For the reasons noted above, these scripts run in system-space, not user-space, and therefore have a generous allocation of permissions. Security concerns therefore apply. You've been warned.

Once you've got your scripts running, if you'd like to allow them to communicate, one easy way to do so is MQTT. It's a very lightweight server-based pub/sub channel: you can run an MQTT server ("broker") on any machine, and configure your scripts to connect to them via paho-mqtt.

Good luck!

Windows:

(Note: If you search for "how to run a Python script on boot," you'll find a lot of guidance about using pywin32. Disregard it. I found pywin32 to be hopelessly broken. Google "pywin32 pywintypes wrong location" to find dozens of people running into just one serious error that has gone unpatched for 15 years.)

Ensure that your script runs without errors, including pip installing all dependencies.

Determine (or verify) the path of your Python interpreter:

python -c "import sys; print(sys.executable)"

Ensure that the path to your installed packages is in the PATH for the system-level environment variables. When you run Python as a user, the interpreter uses your user-specific path to locate installed modules; but when you run Python as system, the interpreter

Announcing Harry Plotter: An easy to use Graphical Plot Manager for muggles! (Windows, MacOS & Linux)

Hey everyone, I've been hard at work & learning a ton working on this project for the past few weeks, and I think its finally ready to show off. I just finished a pretty big refactor so it might be a little unstable/buggy.

You can check it out here: https://github.com/abueide/harry-plotter

And download it here: https://github.com/abueide/harry-plotter/releases

Its open source under GPLv3, it also does not require your private keys to be on your machine to run it.

Feel free to give it a try & leave some feedback!

I will be hard at work attempting to add new features including all time stats, auto harvester setup & monitoring/notifications, as well as pooling protocol support, but alas none of those are here yet.

Also feel free to vote on those features here:

https://github.com/abueide/harry-plotter/issues

I will work on them in order of crypto tips, then secondarily in order of thumbs up/difficulty of implementing

Edit: Last release was pretty broken, update to 1.1.3-Beta and it should fix a lot of problems you guys were seeing.

Please, stop asking for MacOS on the iPad. Just get a Mac if you need one.

This was originally going to be a reply to one of the comments to people begging for MacOS coming to the iPad.

I don’t know why you guys constantly want to turn the iPad into a PC. Sure, the hardware is capable of it, but the strength of the iPad is that it’s a new, modern platform. Just take a look at the state of the Windows store and the quality of touchscreen apps on the MS side. Windows 10 provided legacy support, so no one developed anything new for it that’s not web-based. UWP is basically dead and only used by Microsoft.

Apple’s strength is that they can make developers bend their way. They killed , the floppy disc, the headphone jack, the CD and so on; they made devs do things because they just said so. They’re big and popular enough for that. iPad’s future is not iPadOS getting MacOS apps, it’s forcing desktop developers to create powerful apps for this new platform. There’s so many iPad users that they won’t ignore such a huge market. Sure it takes time, but in the end what you get is a 100 times better user experience than serving old apps on a touchscreen.

Am I the only one who doesn't want iPad to run macOS?

Particularly after yesterdays announcement, where the iPad Pro now has an M1 chip in it, I see so many people saying they just want the iPad to run macOS. I feel like I'm the only one who does not want this to happen.

I love my iPad Pro. The software has not caught up to the hardware, that is true. But I'd rather they continue to expand iPadOS, and not just toss macOS on it. Make external display support better, multiple users, that is all feasible. The real thing I think Apple should focus on is pro apps. Getting the full Adobe suite, Xcode, Final Cut, a more fleshed out Microsoft Office, these would go much further to me than shoehorning macOS onto the device. If more pro apps come to iPad, and they can smooth out external monitor support, along with easier to use multitasking, and I think the device could really replace a laptop for more people. Anyone else agree, or am I on an island?

My poor MacBook 12" Early 2015 got left out in the cold. Came to me as a surprise. I've been using it since 2016 and it's still a beautiful machine. Even had the battery replaced for $300 because it runs great and still feels relevant. It's the perfect machine for my daily needs. Didn't think Apple would discontinue support for it. Genuinely hope they rethink their decision in the future with newer betas - is that even possible?
