I've heard that a common symptom of ADHD is that you often don't remember lyrics. A neurotypical person may have a few favourite songs and can sing along to them perfectly, even knowing the whole song without it playing.
For me I find that I am highly in tune with music, but much more with the structure, tonality and instrumentals than any of the lyrics. It's for this reason that I couldn't actually sing along to any of my favourite songs, but I know the tune off by heart.
Let me know if this sounds off or if you can empathise with this.
Definitely sounds like a few of you can remember lyrics easily and some reporting knowing 1000's by heart. A significant number of you however agree. Maybe this is more of a pattern among people who focus more of the music rather than the lyrics and the different relationships people have with music. I know personally if I wanted to memorise some lyrics I would have to study them. **
edit 2 This blew up 😲. Thanks for all the really varied and interesting responses. I think this goes to show the dichotomy amongst those with ADHD.
I've been listening to Wildest Dreams a lot since the BillBoard list of best bridges of the 21st Century.
"He's so tall and handsome as hell. He's so bad but he does it so well" is admittedly not Taylor Swift's finest work but her delivery has just enough post-coital delirium to make the dumb lyrics work.
What are some of other examples of you not caring about the lyrics because the singer has a great delivery
Just comment the first verse of your gave Taylor song and others can complete it with you!
Edit 1: Holy shit! 281 comments! 😰 Keep going y'all!! I hope you're having fun! ❤️
Edit 2: OMG THANKS FOR THE AWARD!! <3
Edit 3: TWO MORE?! OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GUYS!!
My wife and I listened to an Elton John tribute act whilst on Honeymoon and it sounded like he sang "Roast beef, light of my life". I've listened to a lot of Elton John since, trying to figure out what the lyrics actually are and what the song is, but no luck.
i thought this would be fun. what taylor lyrics have you misheard.
“lights are off, he’s taking off his clothes” style. i was like damn she’s getting to the point lol
“the interview.” style. y’all i just realised several days ago it’s fade into view
“there’s a lion on the couch” mine
“the first eight men, i didn’t kiss em’ and i should have” our song
Two examples that come to mind:
>Flow, flow tighter than a dick in the butt
-Nicki Minaj, Roger That
>Tell that bitch back back, breath smell like horse sex
-Cardi B, Up
What are some other outlandish lyrics that artists have said?
'Heart full of equity, you're an asset'
I swear when I first heard this song, I was like, "Woo! This is kinda brilliant'. Then I joined r/popheads and the rest is history. Now, I honestly don't know how I liked it so much in the first place. Maybe its cos I study accountancy and it was refreshing to hear the words 'equity' and 'asset' in the same line. However, seeing the constant slander of these lyrics and Changes as a whole(I dint like the album, but I liked this song) my perspective changed.
Likewise, what are some lyrics that you loved first then kinda trashed it? Vice versa too. Also, what was the reason for it? Was it self realisation or the collective echo of other people?
I just finished a Studio Ghibli's film When Marnie Was There, and at the ending credits there's this OST "Fine on the Outside". The first line really caught my attention - "I never had that many friends growing up". Continuously listening and searching the lyrics on the net, the song just summed up my life. It's my first time hearing this song and it hit me so hard I started to cry. And as I type this, I'm still crying. Never had a song that I really could relate into. It's like my thoughts are reflected and feelings are reflected in this song. And this is what I'm feeling right now. Fine on the outside. 🥺
Edit: didn't expect that this will blow up. Anyways, our redditor friend (thank you!), made a playlist on some of the songs that was commented early on. You can check this out:
sorry "native" (English) is missing in line three
These can be direct mentions of other song titles of hers or indirect allusions to other tracks and lyrics.
Off the top of my head, this line from This Love comes to mind:
"In silent screams and wildest dreams I never dreamed of this"
Please share the ones that you can think of!
I've watched the show twice now, and for me, nothing beats "Darryl is now played by a broom on a stand." Gets me every time.
My favourite complete songs are probably Fit Hot Guys Have Problems Too and Let's Have Intercourse - clearly I'm Team Nathaniel.
I've picked my hill to die on. Anyone want to fight me?
