41yo suboxone patient with lung cancer. I don't mean to keep pestering this sub, but I thought I'd drop in to say good-bye. The cancer is in my heart and central cardiovascular area. It's over.

Hello all. I hope this update doesn't break any rules, as I suppose I do not have any questions. Mods, let me know. I did not want to just disappear from reddit. I know a number of you have been thinking about me.

I said I would post an update before I passed away and, well, here I am. I know it is fast. But things have been happening fast. I don't mean to flood this sub with my misery. I'm on some heavy duty medications. I hope this doesn't come off as rambling.

This will be my final post. The Cancer is all through both sides of my chest and above my collarbone. It's over.

I was diagnosed with Extensive Stage small cell lung cancer and given four months to live on the 6th. Well, it seems "two weeks" was a more accurate approximation of my time. I am not long for this world.

As for what happened-- I wasn't slated to meet my hospice team till yesterday, Friday. I went to the ER on Thursday with chest pain. They took a lot of fluid out of my chest. The ER physician described my imaging as "grotesque" and immediately asked if I had considered palliation. I said I didn't see hospice till tomorrow. He said if I wanted any chance of dying at home, I needed to see them NOW, otherwise he'd have to admit me. He won't be getting any awards for bedside manner any time soon, but I greatly appreciated his candor. Several urgent phone calls later I had a palliative Nurse Practitioner in my room who went through the screening process and admitted me to their home hospice program. I went home Friday morning with a hospice kit. Met the palliative physician that evening, shortly after I posted my list of questions here.

I will not see Christmas, or Thanksgiving, or even next weekend. Every breath is work. Each one more work than the last. My team estimates that, at this rate, I will die Tuesday at the absolute latest. Probably sooner. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe tonight.

My oncologist called to personally apologize for misjudging my remaining time, but I hold him no ill will. Determining the time of death is not an exact science. I know that. I'm arranging to donate my body to science. I want them to do an autopsy and see how it got me so quickly, to help other cancer patients. The oncologist thinks the cancer may have gotten to my heart or the major central blood vessels. I didn't think small cell could move THIS fast but my oncologist says we caught it late.

My hospice team has been wonderful. I have crossed tapered from bupenorphine-- which I discontinued Wednesday--

Post COVID lung reality

Today I ran 2 miles in 28 minutes. To some this may look like an unsuccessful β€œrun”. However, to me this is my post COVID lung reality. To be really honest, I’m embarrassed to even post this. This is the best time I’ve had since getting sick 8 weeks ago. Weeks ago, I couldn’t even make it half a mile without almost passing out. So today, I am proud of my time bc this means I am getting better. I’m just so happy I’m starting to feel normal again and was able to lightly jog. So thankful!!

For comparison purposes, I am 23F, no prior health issues & typically a 25-30 miles a week, 8 minute pace girl. So this has definitely been a change of pace. (Ha!)

My cousin (24M) was having surgery to remove a lung due to cancer and now the doctors are saying he’s brain dead. Is there any hope for his recovery??

During the operation (as far as I understand) a piece of the tumor slipped into a passage and blocked the other lung. The doctor performing the operation had no idea and my cousin had no oxygen going to his brain for about 18 minutes. He then had massive amount of seizures and went into cardiac arrest at least once. The doctors had a meeting with us to explain what happened and now say he had too much brain damage and EEG machines say that he’s brain dead. The thing is his eyes are wide open at times and he yawns and twitches his lips like he really wants to say something but he can’t. He sometimes squeezes our hand when we’re holding it. But despite all of this the doctors say they aren’t voluntary and he does them even when we aren’t there. They’re just reflexes. Has there been a situation where someone has came back from this? Is there any hope at all?

They’re explaining how him smoking weed led to his condition worsening.

Dr Jenkins sighed. β€œApricot stones contain lethal amounts of cyanide. There is a certain plant in my back garden - if you sit under it for just ten minutes, you will die. Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe for you!”

The man seemed to accept that, and after he and the doctors parted ways, Dr Smith asked, β€œWhat is that plant that kills you if you sit under it?”

β€œA water lily.”

Lung's reputation, fanon vs canon

I recently ended up doing some reading regarding Lung's reputation, in part because of a piece of fanfic I read, and in part so that I could characterise him for a work I've been planning. I was aware that fanfic tends to exaggerate Lung's reputation (The phrase "Dragon of Kyushu" is entirely fanon - Your average person in Brockton Bay has no idea that Lung fought Leviathan), but I hadn't realised how bad it was.

My actual read, having done some skimming for Lung's appearances, and discussions about him, is that Lung is, if anything, massively underestimated by the population of Brockton Bay. I'm kind of just throwing this out there so that someone can shout out if I've gone too far the other way, because there's no easier way to get information than being wrong on the internet.

Taylor serves as our 'Joe Public' character for parahumans. She's pretty ignorant on the cape scene (She didn't really think about how Armsmaster was a Tinker until she was talking to him) and she needed Trigger events explained. As a general rule of thumb, it seems safe to take her as somewhat representative of the general public. And how does she rate Lung?

>How was this monster not an A-Lister?

Taylor definitely doesn't think much of Lung. When she first encounters him, she's explicit that she doesn't consider him an A-lister. But what's interesting is that she actually uses this terminology elsewhere. Uber and Leet get described as 'barely even' B-list. Grue and Bitch were 'marginally successful B-list villains'. That seems to be the tier that Lung gets sorted into. He's a villain she's heard about, and the leader of a big gang, but she doesn't seem to treat him as a big deal, personally. She's shocked by how powerful Lung is when Lung is only about 8 feet tall. That's nothing compared to his actual potential, and it's still more than she expected him to be capable of.

The PRT & Protectorate don't seem to view Lung that highly, either, despite numerous fanfics depicting Armsmaster or the Wards expressing shock that Taylor took him out. Officially, he's a Brute 4-9, which means that they think he can be defeated by a squad of troopers, so long as they do it at the start of a fight. He's officially not even worth sending parahumans up against if he's not already ramped up.

And the villain scene don't seem to respect him that much either. In the confrontation in Hive, we see Kaiser use his power to lock himself, Fenja and Menja into a building with Lung, with th
